Verdi G-SeriesLow-Noise, Green Pump Lasers

The Verdi G-Series is a revolutionary green pump laser that uses a semiconductor chip as the active medium in place of a conventional laser crystal. This chip has a thickness of only a few microns and is pumped by a diode laser, to generate an infrared beam at a wave-length determined by the chip properties. In all the Verdi G models, the oscillating wavelength is 1064 nm intra-cavity doubled to produce a 532 nm green output beam.

This so-called Optically-Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL) technology, patented and unique to Coherent, offers numerous benefits. The very short upper state lifetime eliminates the well known “green noise” problem encountered with other multi-frequency solid-state lasers; this results in a noise performance superior to all other green lasers and enabling the

most noise-sensitive applications like CEP stabilization. The absence of thermal lensing in the active medium allows adjusting the output power between 250 mW and the maximum value without changes in beam parameters. The inherently smaller and simpler design is coupled with the well-established advantages of the entire Verdi family – PermAlign technology and vertically integrated pump diode supply – to enable a new laser platform that is easily scalable in power and extremely reliable.

OPSL technology has been proven for over 10 years and in over 30,000 worldwide installations of various models operating at many different wavelengths and power levels. Verdi G and other OPSL models are also integrated in the Vitara ultrafast oscillator family.

EvolutionQ-Switched, Nd:YLF Green Pump Lasers

The Evolution family of frequency-doubled Nd:YLF diode-pumped lasers provides the mode quality, stability and range of power levels ideally suited for pumping Ti:Sapphire ultrafast amplifiers with repe-tition-rates in the range of 1 kHz to 10 kHz. Evolution is available in four versions: 15W, 30W, 45W and 75W of average power when rated at 5 kHz.

The lifetime of the Evolution’s pump diodes routinely exceeds 10,000 hours and the highly efficient pumping lowers the thermal load on the Nd:YLF rod. These two elements are key to the Evolution’s reliability, power stability, low noise and beam quality. Surprisingly compact, the Evolution laser head is built in a rugged, monolithic, thermally-stabilized enclosure for reliable, alignment-free operation. The laptop computer supplied with the system includes a comprehensive LabVIEW user interface that provides a wide range of control, diagnostics and performance-monitoring features.

Like our Verdi CW pump laser, the Evolution is the industry’s best-selling laser in its class and is used to pump more amplifiers than any other Q-switched pump laser in the world.

With pulse energies in excess of 45 mJ at 1 kHz, the Evolution-HE provides the optimum solution for pumping high power amplifiers, as well as the high pulse energy required in such emerging applications as semiconductor annealing, materials processing and flow visualization.

Mira-900Ultrafast Femtosecond/Picosecond Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

More Mira-900 oscillators are in use today than any other modelocked Ti:Sapphire laser system. The Mira-900 combines simplicity and reliability in an innovative design to produce the most powerful and versatile ultrafast laser system available.

The innovative design of the Mira-900 system makes switching between continuous-wave, picosecond and femtosecond operation simple, while passive Kerr lens modelocking provides greater ease-of-use and reliability.

Our built-in Optima control and diagnostics system enables easy adjustment of the output wavelength,

pulse width and power. Optima features a fast photodiode, relative power monitor, ß-lock, CW detector, humidity sensor and an automatic starter.

A wide range of accessories is available for the Mira-900. These allow operation at lower repetition-rate (Pulse Picker), higher pulse energy (Pulse Switch cavity dumper), shorter wavelengths (Harmonic Generator, Mira-OPO-VIS), longer wavelengths (Mira-OPO-IR), and the ability to deliver a transform-limited pulse at the sample (SPO-I, SPO-II, CPC-II).

VitesseCompact Turnkey Modelocked Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

The Vitesse family of one-box modelocked Ti:Sapphire oscillators features an integrated Verdi pump laser in a truly hands-off sealed laser head design. Ideally suited for seeding ultrafast amplifiers, or as the laser source in a wide range of industrial applications, all Vitesse versions use PermAlign solder-bonded optics for high reliability and intracavity chirped optics for dispersion compensation. Vitesse 800 This fixed-wavelength version operates at 800 nm and is available with Verdi 2W or Verdi 5W pump lasers. System control is via the front panel of the power supply or from an external computer. The Vitesse 800

is particularly suitable as a seed for ultrafast ampli-fiers, such as our Legend Elite systems and our RegA 9000/9050 regenerative amplifier.

Vitesse Duo This special Duo version serves as an integrated seed and green pump source for our RegA 9000/9050 regenerative amplifier. In this configuration a 10W Verdi CW laser internally pumps the Vitesse Ti:Sapphire oscillator while externally pumping the RegA. The combined two-box Vitesse Duo and RegA 9000/9050 system is a compact, economical, all-solid-state solution for high repetition-rate, ultrafast amplifica-tion.

Chameleon Ultra II Typical Power

Chameleon UltraIntegrated, Automated and Widely Tunable Ti:Sapphire Oscillator

More Chameleon Ultra systems are used for Multi-Photon Excitation (MPE) Microscopy and other non-linear imaging techniques than any other laser.

Pumped by the highest power green laser available on the market, Chameleon Ultra II delivers the high-est power, the widest tuning range, the fastest tun-ing speed and the lowest noise of all commercially available Ti:Sapphire lasers. Its beam quality and pulse duration are specified to perfectly match your micro-scope or any other femtosecond experiment. Because of these capabilities, it is possible to image more dyes and fluorescent proteins, and to obtain deeper images more quickly than with any other laser.

For example, the Chameleon Ultra II’s 680 nm to 1080 nm tuning range allows peak excitation of any marker – from short-wavelength dyes such as Indo or Fura, to new proteins like mCherry – as well as optimum native fluorescence excitation or SHG imaging. Every laser in the Chameleon Ultra family is compatible and has been tested with every inverted or upright MPE microscope on the market.

In addition to the industry record, the integrated 18W Verdi pump laser provides the lowest optical noise and longest lifetimes available.

Chameleon Vision and Vision-SIntegrated, Automated and Widely Tunable Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

The Chameleon Vision family has been designed to pre-compensate (pre-chirp) for the natural dispersion that occurs when femtosecond pulses pass through optical elements such as lenses.

In some imaging applications, it may be useful to ex-cite the sample with short pulses in order to maximize the efficiency of the non-linear process (two-photon excitation or harmonic generation). To satisfy this need, Chameleon Vision I and Vision II use the same ultrafast cavity design of the Chameleon Ultra family, with the addition of a built-in automated, pre-compensation unit. As a result, the pulse duration at the sample can always be optimized to match its time-bandwidth limited value (about 140 fs at 800 nm).

Chameleon Vision-S has been designed for those users who, in addition to pre-compensation, also want to excite the sample with even shorter pulses, but still retain the widest possible tuning range. Short pulses maximize the ratio between peak power and average power, an advantage for those samples where linear (average power-based) damage dominates over non-linear (peak power-based) damage. Chameleon Vision-S fully satisfies this requirement by providing 75 fs pulses at the sample.

Built-in pre-compensation supplies also an easy way to purposely change the pulse duration at the sample, to study of the interplay of peak power, average power and pulse duration on different samples. For example, by mismatching the pre-compensation, it is possible

Chameleon Vision and Vision-SIntegrated, Automated and Widely Tunable Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

Key Advantages

• Sealed construction for hands-free operation

• Choice of 140 fs and 75 fs pulses

• Automated pre-compensation with user-adjustable tables

• Highest average output power among pre-chirped lasers (Vision II)

• Highest peak power among pre-chirped lasers (Vision S)

• Widest tuning range available: 400 nm (Vision II)

• Widest range of dispersion pre-compensation (0 to 47,000 fs2)

• Simple menu-drive GUI or RS-232 operator interface for laser and pre-chirp management

• On board spectrometer with USB interface for wavelength and bandwidth monitoring

• PowerTrack active alignment and PermAlign manufacturing for long-term stability

to vary the pulse duration at the sample between the fully compensated value of 75 fs to chirped pulse dura-tions of several hundreds of femtoseconds.

All Chameleon Vision models incorporate our propri-etary prism-based design, able to compensate the broadest range of GVD (Group Velocity Dispersion) using the smallest system footprint commercially available. The provided GVD compensation range is wide enough to eliminate the pulse broadening associated with the most sophisticated microscopes, like ones including complex objective lenses, modula-tors and other optical elements. Chameleon Vision I and II deliver the highest average power, the broadest tuning range, the fastest tuning speed and the lowest noise available on the market among Ti:Sapphire lasers

with pre-compensation. Chameleon Vision S delivers the highest peak power at the sample, providing at the same time the broadest tuning range among auto-mated short pulse Ti:Sapphire lasers designed for non-linear imaging. This exceptional performance enables Chameleon Vision to easily manage pulse duration and excitation wavelength, providing brighter images and better sample viability.

The broadly adjustable GVD compensation can be used to optimize image brightness even while pumping the OPO. The flexibility of the Vision family makes it ideal not only for microscopy but also for time-resolved spectroscopy and Terahertz studies.

Chameleon Compact OPO is a fully automated Optical Parametric Oscillator tunable between 1000 nm and 1600 nm. Chameleon Compact OPO-Vis, in addition to all the benefits of the Compact OPO, includes also Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) outputs of the Chameleon and the OPO signal wavelengths to provide additional seamless tuning between 340 and 800 nm.

Designed specifically to be pumped by the Chameleon Ultra and Vision families of ultrafast lasers, the Chame-leon Compact OPO family offers unique benefits. The non-linear medium is a fan-poled crystal that allows simple and broad tunability of the OPO output over a wide range of pump wavelengths. This feature enables truly independent tuning of Chameleon and Compact OPO output wavelengths over hundreds of nano-meters. Thanks to the low OPO threshold and high efficiency, 20% of the Chameleon pump beam can be split off and sent directly to the output port to provide simultaneous user access to both the Chameleon and the OPO output beams. This feature enables two-color

• Filtered and dry air recirculation unit to tune across water absorption bands

• Vis and Idler outputs available also as after-sale upgrades

non-linear microscopy studies with a flexibility that, until now, required at least two independent lasers. The OPO-Vis extends further this flexibility by adding tun-ability in the UV, visible and near IR wavelengths.

Both Chameleon and the Compact OPO families are fully computer-controlled and automatically tuned. Their combined output offers an overall tuning range in excess of 900 nm, from 680 nm to 1600 nm, acces-sible within seconds. This broad and independently accessible tuning range is useful for two-color MPE mi-croscopy, SHG and THG microscopy, and CARS micros-copy of lipids. Wavelengths above 1.1 micron optimally excite the new mFruit family of fluorescent proteins at their excitation peaks, in wavelength regions of minimum damage and deepest tissue penetration. The combination of the low pump threshold and the indus-try-record high power of Chameleon guarantee plenty of power at both the Chameleon and OPO outputs to compensate for losses in complex microscope systems and to enable deep multimodal imaging. The industry’s

smallest footprint of Chameleon Compact OPO makes it simple to add this laser to existing multiphoton set-ups and upgrade MPE facilities to fully multimodal operations ready for the most advanced spectral imag-ing and manipulation techniques.

Extension into UV and visible wavelengths enables the Chameleon Compact OPO-Vis to address ap-plications beyond multiphoton microscopy, such as spectroscopy and non-linear optics. The optional idler output enables a unique automated tuning range between 340 nm and 1600 nm and 1750 nm to 4000 nm, enabling also time-resolved vibrational spectros-copy. Multi-user facilities will greatly benefit from this unprecedented flexibility while individual investigators will appreciate how the many possible upgrades can follow their changing research objectives, even with limited initial budgets.

Mira-OPOSynchronously-Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator Accessory

The Mira-OPO is a family of synchronously-pumped optical parametric oscillators that extend the wave-length range of the Mira-900, Mira-HP and Vitara-T HP ultrafast oscillators. The Mira-OPO is available in four different OPO crystal formats; Periodically Poled KTP, Fan-Poled KTP, Bulk KTP and Bulk CTA. The choice of bulk or periodically-poled crystal technology lets users select the best solution – based on tuning, ease of use and performance – for their specific application. For maximum flexibility, any version of the Mira-OPO can be upgraded to any other version.

PP-Automatic Version: Periodically-Poled OPO CrystalThis version of the Mira-OPO allows the output wavelength to be tuned without changing the pump wavelength. By taking advantage of the periodically-poled, quasi-phase-matched OPO crystal, a simple electronic adjustment of the OPO’s cavity length tunes the output wavelength. The PP crystal is designed for pumping at a wavelength close to the peak of the Ti:Sapphire gain spectrum, where the Mira output power is highest. This near fixed pump wavelength translates directly into a relatively flat power-tuning curve as a function of wavelength. Wavelength tuning and stabilization are achieved with a feedback loop based on a miniature spectrometer within the Mira-OPO head enclosure. Relative power and humidity

sensors are included with each unit and full electronic control of the output wavelength is accomplished via either the accompanying electronics unit or a computer with an RS-232 interface (LabVIEW program and RS-232 commands are supplied). FAN-PP-Automatic Version: Fan-Poled KTP OPO CrystalFurther extending the capabilities of our PP-Automatic OPO is a new, and truly unique, Fan-crystal option. Rather than having a single fixed poling period in the OPO gain crystal matched to one pump wavelength, the crystal is poled in a fan geometry across the width of the crystal providing a continuously variable quasi-phase-matching period. This allows fully independent tunability between pump and OPO output wavelengths enabling two-color applications such as simultaneous MPE of different dyes, uncaging, CARS/SRS and other two-color pump-probe experiments.

Bulk KTP and CTA Crystal VersionsUsing non-critically phase-matched crystals, the bulk crystal version of the Mira-OPO offers high conversion efficiency and broad tuning ranges. The OPO cavity length automatically stabilizes to maintain stability at the chosen operation point. An optional advanced control scheme offers additional stabilization with respect to pulse width, bandwidth or power.

Mira-OPOSynchronously-Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator Accessory

Key Advantages

• Unique Fan-Poled crystal technology for independent tunability of pump and OPO wavelengths

• IR and visible/IR versions

• Simple, fast wavelength tuning

• Low pump threshold: As low as 0.5W

• High power visible output using highly efficient intracavity doubling

• Access to idler wavelengths to ~4 μm using optional optics sets

• Active cavity length stabilization on all models

• Active pulse width or bandwidth stabilization (optional for Bulk Crystal version)

• Options available include: - Femtosecond and picosecond crystal options - Short pulse configurations (sub-100 fs and sub-50 fs) - Difference Frequency Generator (DFG) option extends wavelength coverage to 15 μm and beyond

Choice of Linear or Ring-Cavity DesignsPP-Automatic, Fan-Poled and Bulk Crystal configura-tions are available in a linear or ring-cavity design. The linear-cavity design is the best solution for maximum power at IR Signal and Idler wavelengths. The ring cavity Mira-OPO is the preferred choice for applications requiring high power in the visible range. The ring-cavity design with intracavity second har-monic generation (SHG) takes advantage of the high intracavity power to efficiently generate visible output

from 500 nm to 700 nm, which fills the gap between the fundamental output and the SHG output of a modelocked Ti:Sapphire oscillator. All versions of the ring-cavity configuration also include optics that cover infrared operation.

Overall, Mira-OPOs provide the industry’s most unique range of wavelength coverage in the infrared through visible spectrum. The Mira-OPO is available in femto-second, picosecond or long-picosecond configurations.

Pulse PickerAccessory for Selecting Pulses from Modelocked Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

The Pulse Picker, a standalone accessory for selecting pulses from femtosecond or picosecond Ti:Sapphire oscillator, features a rugged optomechanical head assembly and a versatile controller.

The acousto-optic Bragg cell in the head provides simple single-pass diffraction of the pulse train, while the controller lets the user select any repetition-rate by dividing the Ti:Sapphire oscillator frequency by any integer from 16 to 8192. By applying external control signals, rates down to even single-shot are possible.

Two Bragg cell options are available, SiO2 for applica-tions demanding the highest contrast ratio for input powers >2W, or the TeO2 cell which is recommended for input powers <2W and for higher diffraction efficiency.

Pulse Switch for Mira-900Cavity Dumper Accessory

The Pulse Switch for Mira-900 ultrafast oscillators is a compact, bolt-on accessory enabling cavity-dumped operation to produce higher pulse energy at lower repetition-rates.

Using intracavity acousto-optic modulation to switch pulses out of the Mira cavity provides a convenient way to both increase the output pulse energy and reduce the laser repetition-rate without using an amplifier system. Providing repetition-rates from 9 MHz down to single-shot, this configuration delivers up to 60 nJ of pulse energy.

The Pulse Switch accessory, compatible with both the femtosecond and picosecond cavities of the

Mira-900-F, Mira-900-P and 900-D, extends the Mira-900’s cavity length to include the Pulse Switch’s acousto-optic modulator. An optional integrated frequency-doubling module that provides conversion efficiencies up to 40% further extends the capabilities of the Pulse Switch.

Mira-900, with the addition of the Pulse Switch or its optional frequency-doubler, is ideal for processes and experiments that benefit from lower duty cycle and/or higher pump intensity, such as time-correlated single-photon counting, non-linear optics, transient absorp-tion spectroscopy, and pump-probe spectroscopy.

Pulse CompressorsPulse Compression Accessories for Coherent Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

Pulse compressors are versatile accessories that temporally compress the broadband pulses from Mira, Vitara, Chameleon and Vitesse oscillators en-abling operation very close to the transform limit.

By adding Group Velocity Dispersion (GVD), pulse compressors also allow users to pre-compensate for the dispersion introduced when downstream optics are added in order to shorten the pulse width at the sample.

Two types of Coherent pulse compressor accessories are available: the Compact Pulse Compressor (CPC-II), based on chirped-mirror technology, and the prism-based SPO-I and SPO-II Compressors.

Synchrolock-APSynchronization Accessory for Mira and Vitara Ti:Sapphire Oscillators

The Synchrolock-AP is used to accurately synchronize two Mira or Vitara-T lasers together, or to synchronize a Mira or Vitara-T laser to an external RF source. Oper-ating in the femtosecond or picosecond (Mira only) regime, the Synchrolock-AP allows smooth wavelength tuning while keeping the lasers synchronized.

Three separate actuators operate at different locations inside the laser head to compensate low, medium

and high frequencies. The actuators are controlled by feedback electronics while a high-speed photodiode simultaneously monitors the laser repetition-rate.

The Synchrolock-AP uses the 9th harmonic content of the photodiode signal to provide a higher signal-to-noise ratio, which leads to tighter jitter lock. In this way Synchrolock-AP provides extremely low jitter while ensuring long-term stability.

CEP Stabilizer for VitaraCarrier to Envelope Phase (CEP) Stabilizer Accessory for Vitara

The Vitara CEP Stabilizer is a state-of-the art Carrier-to-Envelope Phase stabilizer accessory designed exclu-sively for Vitara-T.

Through the use of active feedback control, Vitara CEP locks the carrier envelope offset frequency (wo) to a fraction of the repetition-rate wr. This establishes a fixed phase relation between the carrier and the envelope. Maintenance of this phase relationship is of paramount importance in experiments such as Above-Threshold Ionization (ATI) or generation of isolated attosecond pulses.

Vitara CEP consists of CEP actuators incorporated in the Vitara-T, a quasi-collinear f-to-2f interferometer and a wide bandwidth electronics feedback loop. The interferometer uses a photonic crystal fiber to gener-ate an octave-scanning optical spectrum. The red end of this spectrum is frequency-doubled and combined with the green end of this same broad spectrum. A fast photodetector senses the resultant beat frequency and at wo, the carrier envelope offset frequency. Our feeback electronics control the fast and slow actuators inside the Vitara-T to stabilize wo to a fraction of the repetition-rate which is detected by a fast photodiode in the Vitara-T.

Legend Elite High-Performance, kHz Repetition-Rate, Ti:Sapphire Amplifiers

Legend Elite series amplifiers have become the top sell-ing kHz, repetition-rate Ti:Sapphire regenerative ampli-fiers on the market due to their leading combination of performance, stability and reliability.

They feature an integrated Evolution pump laser, a thermally stabilized regenerative amplifier and a stretcher/compressor in a single, compact enclosure.

The E-2 Engine, our regenerative amplifier module which is common to every Legend Elite amplifier, now includes our proprietary slab rod design to reliably provide high energy pulses with high efficiency – while delivering a guaranteed beam quality unsurpassed by alternative designs.

In the last few years, Coherent has developed some breakthrough passive and active technologies to become a leader in both very high power (up to 15W) and Carrier to Envelope Phase (CEP) stabilized ultrafast amplifiers for the most demanding advanced applica-tions such as attosecond science.

The new Legend Elite HE+ and Legend Elite Duo HE+ in-tegrate these new technologies, including all CEP-grade hardware, to ensure unmatched level of intrinsic stabil-ity with best-in-class energy and pointing performance (respectively specified at <0.5% rms and <10 µrad rms) so every ultrafast application can benefit from these cutting edge developments.

Furthermore both the Legend Elite HE+ and Duo HE+ are de facto CEP-ready, offering to the users the maxi-mum forward flexibility through up-gradability.

Legend Elite HE+: Highest power available from a re-generative amplifier.

The Legend Elite HE+ now offers the highest output power (up to >6W) available from a regen-only ultra-fast amplifier using thermo-electrical cooling of the rod. For lower power versions (up to 4W), the efficiency of our proprietary slab rod design allows for a simple and robust water cooled scheme.

external pump laser required for some models) to more than double the output of its regenerative stage while maintaining the same output stability and preserving an excellent mode quality.

Pulse Width Configurations:All Legend Elite HE+ and Duo HE+ are available in 4 different pulse width configurations: the F models have a pulse widths specified at <130 fs. The ultra-broadband input from the Vitara one-box oscillator, is the key to the performance of the USP (Ultra Short Pulse) versions which feature a proprietary, mixed grating, stretcher/compressor design for optimum pulse width stability. This design very comfortably supports the sub-35 fs specification for USP systems. For applications such as extreme ultra-violet or attosecond pulse generation, where the shortest pulses are essential, the Vitara T seeded Ultra Short Extreme (USX) versions provide sub-25 fs pulses. Our proprietary BandMax technology is the key to generating and sustaining the broad amplified bandwidth necessary to support reliable, sub-25 fs pulses. Picosecond models provide the short pulses and narrow bandwidth required for both time- resolved and spectrally-resolved experiments. Pico- second versions are typically seeded with a femto- second oscillator that is spectrally-masked prior to amplification.

CEP Stabilization:For applications requiring Carrier Envelope Phase stability, the sub-25 fs Legend Elite USX and sub-35 fs Legend Elite USP models are available with CEP stabi-lization, combining the benefits of regen design (un-matched mode quality, energy and pointing stability) with a world-class CEP performance (see page 70).

With pulse widths from <25 fs to the picosecond regime, pulse energies up to >12 mJ and output power up to >15W, there is always a Legend Elite model for your ultrafast amplifier application.

Legend Elite Cryo PA Cryogenically-Cooled, Ti:Sapphire Power Amplifier

The Legend Elite Cryo PA is a field-proven add-on power amplifier that can increase the pulse energy output of the Legend Elite amplifiers to more than 20 mJ. Cryogenic cooling helps to produce high pump conversion efficiency and enhanced beam quality for high-power operation in various configurations with pulse widths to <30 fs and repetition-rates to 10 kHz. Our integrated Evolution pump laser ensures the system’s stable and reliable operation.

Operation of the Cryo PA is based on directly imaging the output from the Legend Elite amplifier to the cryogenic amplifier without using spatial filters or saturable absorbers. The Cryo PA combines the basic high power amplification capabilities of cryogenically-cooled Ti:Sapphire technology with Coherent’s pro-

prietary vacuum cryogenic chamber, which manages the thermal conditions of the Ti:Sapphire crystal. This design approach minimizes beam distortion during amplification. Using a single power amplifier stage results in a superior beam quality, simpler operation and a more compact footprint compared to traditional multi-stage configurations.

The design of the pulse compressor, which is also integral to the amplifier, is based on our experience developing terawatt amplifiers with master gratings. This compressor design ensures high efficiency with minimal spatial distortion. The resultant compressed beam profile is highly symmetrical with typical M2 values <1.3.

The Hidra amplifies a nanojoule pulse from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire oscillator up to terawatt peak power at 10 Hz repetition-rate. It is a multi-stage, chirped pulse amplifier consisting of a grating-based pulse stretcher, regenerative amplifier for first-stage ampli-fication, one or more power amplifier stages, followed by a grating-based pulse compressor. With its flexible platform design and a selection of lamp-pumped and diode-pumped solid-state lasers for pumping, all Hidra configurations are upgradable to higher performance.

Two standard pumping configurations are available: 10 Hz-only or hybrid pumping. In 10 Hz-only pumping, the entire amplifier (regenerative plus multipass) is pumped by a single 10 Hz lamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser.

In hybrid pumping, the regenerative amplifier is pumped with an Evolution diode-pumped kHz Nd:YLF laser. The multipass stage(s) are pumped with a lamp-pumped 10 Hz Nd:YAG laser. The main advantage of hybrid pumping is improved stability.

The pulse compressor for the 10 mJ, 25 mJ and 50 mJ Hidra systems is contained within the Hidra enclosure. For the 100 mJ Hidra, the pulse compressor is a sepa-rate unit. This external compressor for the Hidra-100 is also available with vacuum-compatible mounts as an option. This version requires users to mount the entire compressor inside their own vacuum enclosure to sim-plify delivery of the terawatt pulses to the experiment.

With repetition-rate options to >500 kHz, the RegA 9000/9040/9050 provides a unique range of perfor-mance for Ti:Sapphire amplifiers. Its use of CW pump-ing by the market-leading Verdi DPSS laser creates a stable, near diffraction-limited output beam with energy to >6 µJ at 250 kHz. At high repetition-rates, data acquisition for scientific experiments is faster and throughput is higher in processing applications. The wavelength range of RegA can also be extended by adding a Coherent high repetition-rate optical parametric amplifier (OPA9400/9800 series).

The RegA is specifically designed to amplify seed pulses from a Coherent Vitara, Mira or Vitesse. For oscillator/amplifier split-pump beam configurations, the speci-fied pump laser for RegA is our Verdi G10, G12 or G18, The Vitesse Duo, which integrates the seed oscillator and amplifier pump laser into a single package, forms the most compact configuration.

Three versions of RegA are available: the sub-160 fs RegA 9000, the sub-60 fs RegA 9050, and the sub-40 fs RegA 9040. The basic RegA 9000 includes the stretch-ing, amplification and compression functions into a single box. The RegA 9050 and RegA 9040 both use one unit for the amplifier and a second unit containing a stretcher and compressor.

The electronic control box provides complete control of pulse timing, delivering a real-time LCD display of amplifier performance. The electronics have the ability to recall and reset any system parameter.

The low noise of the Verdi pump laser and high repeti-tion-rate of RegA amplifiers enable data collection with high signal-to-noise ratio in applications such as four-wave mixing or up-conversion. With hundreds of units installed, the RegA system is a well proven ultrafast tool for advanced ultrafast research.

approach for high-performance tunable ultrafast applications.

The OPerA Solo design incorporates well-proven TOPAS technology in the white-light seeded, pre-amplifier followed by a power amplifier. In the sum-frequency-mixing configuration the OPerA Solo uses a fraction of the 800 nm pump beam directly from the Legend Elite output beam for mixing with the OPA signals. This “fresh pump beam” feature enables superior spatial, spectral and temporal beam quality compared to designs that use the “residual” portion of the 800 nm pump beams.

TOPAS* is a computer-controlled optical parametric amplifier (OPA) used to extend the tuning range of the Legend Elite, Legend Elite Cryo PA, Hidra, and Libra ultrafast amplifiers. Femtosecond and picosecond models are available and high energy versions can accommodate pump energies of more than 10 mJ. The whitelight seeding technology in the TOPAS is featured on all Coherent femtosecond kHz models to ensure the lowest output noise performance. OPA picosecond systems use superfluorescence seeding for maximum efficiency at narrow bandwidths.

TOPAS employs a modular design with external beam-conditioning optics and wavelength extension options to extend the standard tuning range from 190 nm to 20 µm.

The combination of SHBC and TOPAS*-400 provides a unique accessory for generating narrow-band (<20 cm-1) , tunable radiation when pumped with the 800 nm output from a femtosecond Legend Elite or Libra amplifier. When used in conjunction with an additional standard femtosecond OPA, it offers the potential to provide both femtosecond and picosecond tunable beams simultaneously using a single femtosecond amplifier. The SHBC (Second Harmonic Bandwidth Compressor),

converts the wide bandwidth beam at 800 nm from the femtosecond ultrafast amplifier (purchased separately) to a narrow bandwidth beam at 400 nm. This 400 nm beam is then used to pump the TOPAS-400-ps-WL picoseond OPA model to generate tunable, narrow bandwidth beam from 480 nm to 2600 nm.

The HGS accessory provides extremely convenient second-, third- or fourth-harmonic output for kHz Legend Elite and Libra Ti:Sapphire amplifiers, and 10 Hz Hidra Ti:Sapphire amplifiers. Second- (HGS-D) and third- (HGS-T) harmonic outputs are accessible from a single compact unit. A second enclosure is added for fourth-harmonic (HGS-F) generation. The HGS employs collinear mixing in high-damage-threshold BBO crystals for high efficiency and ease of use. Crystal rotation and optical delay stages are manually adjustable, and all crystals, focussing op-tics, dichroic wavelength separation mirrors, etc., are included. The near-diffraction limited beam quality and demonstrated stability of both pulse width and beam pointing from Coherent amplifiers ensure optimum performance at the harmonic wavelengths.

Single-Shot Autocorrelator (SSA)Pulse Width Measurement Accessory for Ultrafast Amplifier Systems

The SSA accessory is designed for use over a broad range of energies and wavelengths. Available in config-urations to measure femtosecond or picosecond pulses, this is an accurate and versatile tool compatible with both commercial amplifier systems – Legend Elite, Libra and Hidra – and with home-built amplifier systems.

Two femtosecond models are available (SSA-F and Hi-Res SSA) depending on the pulse lengths to be mea-sured. The picosecond option (SSP) is available with the SSA-F model .

The SSA splits laser pulses into two beams that are then non-colinearly frequency-doubled in a non-linear crystal. In the femtosecond configuration the relative wavefront tilt produces a spatial time delay in the frequency-doubled signal, which results in an autocor-relation of the temporal intensity profile. In picosecond operation one mirror is replaced with a diffraction grat-ing for additional wavefront tilt. In both operations the autocorrelation signal is detected by a CCD array and is

Key Advantages

• Measures temporal width of amplified pulses

Key Advantages

• Variable repetition-rate

• Multiple synchronized output beams

• Whitelight continuum seed for ease of tuning

• Difference-frequency generation (DFG) options extend tuning to the mid-IR region

The OPA 9400/9450 and OPA 9800/9850 family of optical parametric amplifiers extends the wavelength coverage of the RegA 9000/RegA 9040 and RegA 9050 high repetition-rate (250 kHz) regenerative amplifiers into the visible and infrared spectral ranges.

These OPAs are highly efficient and easy-to-use passive devices. Pulses from the RegA amplifier are split into two beams. One beam produces whitelight continuum to seed the parametric amplification process while the other beam pumps the BBO non-linear crystal.

To allow access to both visible and near-infrared output the OPA 9400/9450 is pumped with the second harmonic (400 nm) from the RegA, while the OPA 9800/9850 is pumped with the RegA’s 800 nm beam.

Multiple outputs are available to provide signal and idler beams from the parametric process, as well as residual beams from the whitelight continuum and RegA pump beams.

The Legend Elite CEP Stabilizer is a state-of-the-art Carrier-to-Envelope Phase stabilizer accessory designed exclusively for the Legend Elite amplifiers. Applications such as High Harmonics Generation and Attosecond Science require CEP stabilized ultrafast pulses, generated by the Vitara oscillator, to be ampli-fied up to the millijoule level of energy by Legend Elite amplifiers while conserving the CEP stability. The Legend Elite CEP stabilizer includes an active feed-back control to lock the phase velocity of the oscillating light field to the group velocity of the phase envelope. Thus, for ultra-short pulses consisting of only a few optical cycles, the peak of the oscillat ing electrical field can be maximized under the phase envelope.

At the heart of the Legend Elite CEP is a separate phase detection module which includes an f-to-2f interferometer. An octave-spanning optical spectrum is generated by focusing a small part of the Legend Elite beam on a sapphire plate. The red end of this spectrum is frequency-doubled and colinearly combined with the blue end of this same broad spectrum. The resulting spectral interference fringes are measured, on every shot, by an analog detector which generates a signal to stabilize and control the Carrier- Envelope Phase by making adjustments in the Legend Elite amplifier. With the CEP stabilized Verdi pumped Vitara and Evolution pumped Legend Elite, Coherent is the first and only company to offer a complete CEP stabilized ultrafast amplifier system designed and built by a single manufacturer.

Below and on the following page are recommendations for selecting the power and energy measurement tools for your ultrafast setup. Our power sensors measure the output of all Coherent pump lasers, amplifiers and oscillators, while our pulse energy measurement systems are designed for pump sources or oscillators having repetition-rates less than 10 kHz. And our energy sensors give you immediate feedback when peaking the output of your ultrafast system. All Coherent power and energy measurement products offer superior performance for applica-tions requiring the precise pulse energy specifications.
