In 1972, Neil Diamond was on the verge of superstardom. Having just scored his first top 10 album with Moods, Diamond had successfully made the transition from tunesmith for others to pop music star. All that was missing to take that next leap to what would one day become an iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career was the defining moment, a signature accomplishment that would differentiate Diamond from the many other singer/songwriters out there. Hot August Night, recorded August 24, 1972, during Diamond’s sold-out ten-night stand at L.A.’s Greek Theatre, was that moment.

The album hit number five on the Billboard Top 200 and went double platinum. In Australia it became the most successful album of the 1970s, spending 29 weeks at No. 1 and still charting in the top 10 in 1976, a full four years after its release.

But the impact of Hot August Night was much greater than just sales. Called “the ultimate Diamond record” by All Music Guide’s Stephen Erlewine, it became a franchise, with two sequels, Hot August Night II in 1987 and Hot August Night/NYC in 2009.

Listening now to the package, 40 years later, it’s still easy to see why. Featuring so many of Diamond’s classics – “I Am…I Said,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Play Me,” “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “Song Sung Blue,” “Solitary Man” – it’s like a songbook of great American pop music from the sixties and seventies.

This 1967 recording provides a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most innovative ensembles in rock history. It features Syd Barrett-era Floyd performing its barnstorming signature tune, "Interstellar Overdrive," and what sounds like an embryo version of "Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun," from A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS, here called "Nick's Boogie." Both songs included here are epic-length improvisatory pieces that shift from spacey ambience to full-blown freakout and back again, using very basic tools. Synthesizers hadn't come on the scene yet, so Rick Wright relies strictly on his snake-charmer organ riffs to enhance the spooky, ethereal mood. Barrett utilizes pure, acid-drenched weirdness to make the most unearthly sounds possible with very little electronic enhancement. Legions of groups would take their cue from the advances made by Pink Floyd during this time, and LONDON makes it easy to see why.

December 2010 at Metropolis Studios, West London. 120 fans are squeezed into Studio A to witness at extremely close quarters a performance by a progressive rock legend. Leader John Lees (who is also interviewed on the DVD) introduces a set which includes a wealth of Barclay James Harvest classics and no one in the room was much more than ten feet from a band that is renowned for having played to hundreds of thousands on both sides of the Berlin Wall during the 1980s. It was during the 1970s that BJH made their mark with an impressive array of Mellotron-soaked mini-epics that owed more to Vaughan Williams than Chuck Berry. Today, of course, founder member Lees' version of the band have the full range of 21st century technology available to present what is a selection of the best of BJH - including the poignant Child Of The Universe, the symphonic Mockingbird and of course the concluding and timeless Hymn. It was in 2006 that principal songwriter and guitarist Lees toured the UK for the first time (with original drummer Woolly Wolstenhome, now sadly deceased) as John Lees' Barclay James Harvest. Sold out London shows, filmed for DVD release, testified to their appeal after a long absence from the stage and for the many fans not lucky enough to have attended the Metropolis show, this new live souvenir offers them an opportunity to once again be captivated by those much-loved BJH compositions.

This equation adds up to one electric performance for Canterbury’s finest – Caravan. Pye Hastings, Geoffrey Richardon, Jim Leverton, Jan Schelhaas and new drummer Mark Walker are joined by retired percussionist and founder member Richard Coughlan to deliver an accomplished set that includes many favourites from their 25 album, 40+ year career. This DVD captures the magic of that concert, together with band interviews and more. In the interviews following the concert, Richardson (a virtuoso on the garden shears, among many other instruments) compares the experience to playing the Marquee on Wardour Street. While lead singer, principal songwriter and guitarist Hastings, who debuts two excellent new compositions here, claims Caravan playing live is "pure happiness, it cures all aches and pains."

Johnny’s first introduction to the spotlight was through the Johnny Van Zant’s Band debut album, ‘No More Dirty Deals’, a rough and tumble southern rock blowout that helped to establish him - and his band - as serious contenders. Getting back into the ring, their second album, titled ‘Round Two’, was originally released in 1982 and produced by Skynyrd’s live soundman Kevin Elson. The sound and ma-terial takes its cue from the great southern rock records of the 70s, turbo-charged with a solid dose of contemporary melody, bringing to mind the best work of .38 Special.
