Emphasizing ADNEC’s Strategic Importance in the RegionBy Major Jamil Al Saadi

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) aspires to make UMEX as big as IDEX, says Humaid

Matar Al Dhaheri, the Acting Group CEO of ADNEC. He says UMEX acquires its importance from the accelerated development of the unmanned systems industry which has an extremely strategic value to all countries in civil and military areas. “The economic future of this industry is quite promising,” according to Al Dhaheri. ADNEC’s policy is designed to promote all events, including IDEX, NAVDEX, UMEX and Simulation and Training Conference (SMC), by taking part in the various international exhibitions and events, according to Al Dhaheri. “Last year, we participated in scores of conferences, exhibitions and events to promote our exhibitions, met with decision-makers and looked for fresh exhibitors. We also promoted UMEX as a leading event offering exhibitors a unique opportunity to meet with decision-makers and senior officials in the region and get them acquainted with the latest international techniques in this sector and tap opportunities for cooperation and deals. The unexpected turnout of the second session of UMEX validates our decision to separate UMEX.”ADNEC seeks to boost Abu Dhabi’s status as a hub for business tourism in the region by supporting existing events and attracting new ones.

Moreover, ADNEC has an all-out vision which has proved successful in attracting more visitors to ADNEC center in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Last year, ADNEC received more than 1.8 million visitors who attended 369 local and international events.ADNEC’s long-term vision of attracting new international conferences to the Middle East was highly successful in winning the chance to host the Global Energy Conference (GEC) and International Transport Forum (ITF) scheduled for 2019.

The secret behind the successAl Dhaheri says: “It is learning from the past and building on success stories, in addition to the ability to accommodate fast-changing changes in business tourism and deal with them efficiently and flexibly on the one hand, and comply with the requirements of our partners in the public and private sectors on the other.”

IDEX is particularly important to ADNEC“ADNEC’s strategy is meant to cement Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a destination of business tourism regionally and internationally by supporting and expanding the exhibition/conference industry and attracting fresh events according to the 12 sectors outlined in the Abu Dhabi Vision up to 2030. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc.’s (GA-ASI)

Predator® XP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) is designed specifically to overcome the threat of global terrorism previously handled by manned Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft, according to Tamer Aly, Regional Director, International Strategic Development, Middle East/North Africa, GA-ASI. “The manned ISR is a resource-intensive effort requiring multiple aircraft with heavy operating costs and vast teams of trained personnel to pilot, operate sensors, and perform maintenance. The result has been an incomplete solution coming at great expense to the countries that have made the required investment to address this critical problem,” Aly told the Nation Shield magazine in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the UMEX.He said that this is because the ISR mission presents two critical challenges for these nations. First, persistent surveillance over vast stretches of open terrain is required to spot the covert movement of personnel and goods. Manned aircraft do not

adequately provide the required level of persistence due to their limited endurance. Second, there are significant limitations to the number of qualified personnel available to recruit and train for manned ISR programs to ensure constant watch over these areas. “That is where the Predator® XP Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) comes in,” he said. “Equipped with GA-ASI’s state-of-the-art Lynx® Multi-mode Radar mated to an integrated high-definition Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) camera, Predator XP provides all-weather, day/night performance for a wide-area search capability.“Predator XP is approved and licensed by the U.S. Government and is now available to a broader customer base, including the Middle East and North African regions,” Aly pointed out.“Lynx’s Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) mode provides a quick and easy method for locating moving vehicles. The radar’s new Maritime Wide Area Search (MWAS) mode, coupled with an Automatic Identification System (AIS), provides the capability to complete a variety of maritime missions successfully,

including coastal surveillance, drug interdiction, long-range surveillance, small target detection, and search and rescue operations, he added. With an endurance of 35 hours and the ability to ascend up to 25,000 feet, the aircraft is designed with state-of-the-art technologies, including an automatic takeoff and landing capability, redundant flight control surfaces, enhanced avionics, and triple-redundant flight control computers. Predator XP is equipped with both Line-of-Sight (LOS) and Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) data link systems for over-the-horizon operations. These features make Predator XP the region’s ideal “go-to” remotely piloted ISR platform, Aly said.“Predator XP excels in both military and civil missions as its capabilities are uniquely qualified to support law enforcement, public safety, search and rescue, and emergency response operations. GA-ASI’s Predator-series RPAS are integrated with civil airspace integration measures and have been conducting these civil missions within American borders for over a decade, supporting both the U.S. Department of Homeland Security/Customs and Border Protection and NASA,” he said.

Under a five-year contract won in 2013, CAE instructors

provide classroom, simulator, and live flying instruction as well as courseware development in support of approximately 1,500 pilots and sensor operators who go through the training programme annually at four US Air Force bases. The primary schoolhouse is at Holloman Air Force Base (AFB), New Mexico, which is home to both the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper formal training units. Additional training is provided by CAE at Creech AFB, Nevada; March Air Reserve Base, California; and Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, New York.“A number of companies, including CAE, market and sell the hardware that can be used to train remotely piloted aircraft aircrews,” said CAE’s site manager at Holloman AFB, who asked not to be named due to security concerns. “What CAE brings is

experience on how to train pilots and sensor operators to use the aircraft to perform various mission sets.”The MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper training programme at the formal training units last four months and comprises academic training, simulator training, and live flying. About a quarter of the training time is spent in the classroom, with the remaining three-quarters divided between simulator and live flying training. Pilots and sensor operators train as a crew using flight simulators that are very much like the ground control stations (GCS) used operationally. For live flying training, the crew employs the aircraft from inside the GCS via a line-of-sight data link or a satellite data link for beyond line-of-sight operations.Whether in a simulator or the actual GCS, the pilot flies the aircraft with a joystick and throttle based primarily on data inputs from an array of displays,

including a moving map. The sensor operator controls the electro-optical, low-light and infrared cameras, other sensors, and the targeting system. Once they have learned the basics, the RPA crews conduct simulated missions including Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), combat search and rescue (CSAR), and air interdiction. On a typical day, trainee crews fly an average of 45 simulator sorties, while those practicing live flights conduct 40 sorties.CAE is also under contract with the Italian Directorate for Air Armaments and Airworthiness (DAAA) to develop and deliver a Predator Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Mission Trainer for the Italian Air Force. CAE is developing a high fidelity UAS Mission Trainer specifically representing the Italian Air Force’s General Atomics Predator A and Predator B.

CAE Delivers Training for Predator and Reaper AircraftCAE is training MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper pilots and sensor operators from the

United States and other nations in the skill sets needed to fly and manage the two remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) which have become featured assets in reconnaissance, coordination, and strike missions worldwide. Predator/Reaper aircrews receive training for initial qualification, refresher/recurrent training, and instructor qualification.

According to TEKEVER, the preliminary tests are being carried

out with success and AR3 NET Ray will be the smallest UAV in the market carrying a maritime radar. The AR3 NET RAY developed by TEKEVER group is a shipborne UAS designed to support multiple types of maritime and land-based missions, including ISTAR, pollution monitoring, and infrastructure surveillance and communications support operations. It is fully tested for launch from small vessels, providing an deployable extender for shipborne sensors.“Because of its endurance of more than 10 hours, it’s a perfect fit to support both maritime and medium range land missions”, said Ricardo Mendes, TEKEVER COO, “and, with an extra payload capacity, the goal is to make AR3 NET RAY the smallest UAV in the market carrying a maritime radar. The preliminary tests said that we are right”.

The TEKEVER Group is building up an unmanned aerial system programme to perform multiple types of near shore and maritime missions, including search and rescue, surveillance, illegal fisheries control, maritime patrol and pollution detection, among others. The programme is a result of the close cooperation between TEKEVER and the Portuguese Navy.TEKEVER’s knowledge in maritime scenarios is becoming recognised by multiple institutions. The European Space Agency and the European

Maritime Safety Agency have selected the TEKEVER AR5 Life Ray Evolution for a new European maritime surveillance system composed of drones. The RAPSODY Project, led by TEKEVER, will test this year the use of unmanned aerial systems in a maritime context through real-world demonstration of two scenarios: search and rescue missions; and pollution and oil spill monitoring. The systems will operate over the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. This is the first time unmanned aerial systems will be introduced into maritime surveillance missions in Europe.TEKEVER develops disruptive technologies for the Information Technologies, Aerospace, Defence and Security markets, providing innovative products and solutions in different areas such as Enterprise Systems, Unmanned Systems, C4I and SDR-based Communications.
