CELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS THROUGH SCRIPTURE, MUSIC, AND POETRY

En natus est Emanuel Michael Praetorius

En natus est Emanuel, Dominus, Quem praedixit Gabriel, Dominus, Dominus salvator noster est.

Hic jacet in praesepio, Dominus, Puer admirabilis, Dominus. Dominus salvator noster est.

Haec lux est orta hodie, Dominus, Ex Maria Virgine, Dominus. Dominus salvator noster est.

Lo! Emmanuel, the Lord, is born, whom Gabriel foretold, the Lord— the Lord is our savior.

Here he lies in a manger, the Lord— wondrous boy, the Lord— the Lord is our savior.

This light, the Lord, has dawned this day from the Virgin Mary. The Lord is our savior.

Philippians 2: 5-11

Right side/el derecho:

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.

Left side/la izquierda:

Therefore, God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Born to Die Glenn Burleigh Luke 1:26-38

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible

with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.

Un Dios que casi no conocemos / Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero The God We Hardly Knew

Reader: No one can celebrate a genuine Christmas without being truly poor.

All/todxs: The self-sufficient, the proud, those who, because they have everything, look down on others, those who have no need even of God - for them, there will be no Christmas. Reader: Only the poor, the hungry, those who need someone to come on their behalf, will have that someone.

All/todxs: That someone is God. Emmanuel. God-with-us. Without poverty of spirit there can be no abundance of God

Niño lindo Venezuelan Christmas Carol

Niño lindo, ante ti me rindo, Niño lindo, eres tú mi Dios.

Lovely child, to you I surrender, Lovely child, you are my God.

Luke 2:8-18

Pastores a Belén / Oh, Come to Bethlehem

Choir: Oh, come to Bethlehem; you shepherds, hurry to see the newborn child, the Christ, the son of Mary. Look here, look here! The child of hope is born. Now bring a gift so sweet to the child; in one so small our God has smiled.

Reader: The Word became Light, luz

The Word became History, historia The Word became Conflict, conflicto The Word, la palabra, became Indomitable Spirit, and sowed its seeds … and those-of-good-will, heard the angels sing, el canto de ángeles Tired knees were strengthened, trembling hands were stilled, and the people who wandered in darkness saw the light! Entonces, The Word, la palabra, became flesh in a nation-pregnant-with-freedom, The Spirit, el Espíritu, strengthened the arms which forged Hope, The Verb, y el Verbo, became flesh in the people who perceived a new day…

All/todxs: The Word, la palabra, became the seed-of-justice and we conceived peace. The Word, la palabra, made justice to rain and peace came forth from the furrows in the land. Grace and Truth celebrated together in the laughter of the children rescued by life. And the Word, la palabra, shall continue sowing futures in the furrows of Hope. And on the horizon the Word, la palabra, made light invited us to relive a thousand dawns toward the Kin-dom that comes…

Our God in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
