ISARM in Africa Four sub-regional ISARM components have been established in
Sub-Saharan Africa - in West, Central and Southern Africa, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) sub-region.
Milestones
2002 Tripoli Workshop produced the first inventory of African Transboundary Aquifers. For the majority of identified aquifers, only approximate location is known and no details on aquifer’s characteristics are available.
2005 IGRAC refined delineation of 20 transboundary aquifers in the SADC region and developed a web-based system for storage and display of relevant information. A course material on groundwater resources and transboundary aquifers in Southern Africa was developed

ISARM in Africa
2007 UNESCO-IHP, in close cooperation with national committees, the University of Western Cape and IGRAC, took initiative for establishing ISARM-SADC (launching meeting in Pretoria).
2008 Tripoli Conference Members of the ISARM core-group (UNESCO-IHP, IAH and IGRAC) supported the establishment of a Regional Centre for the Management of Shared Groundwater Resources in Libya

ISARM in Africa
2010 ISARM – IGAD Workshops held in Addis Ababa produced an update of the Transboundary Aquifer Map for the Horn of Africa. The second workshop was held in 2011 also in Addis Ababa.
2011 First ISARM Central Africa and Second ISARM West Africa Workshop in Douala, Cameroon. Both workshops were held simultaneously and organised within the framework of the regional ISARM initiatives implementation during the 7th phase of IHP (IHP-VII, 2008-2013).
