Unit 2- Sheet Material Idea DescriptionSheet materials can be quickly manipulated
in order to form three dimensional objects. The aim of my project is to focus on the identity and independence of a single sheet material and the concept of visual illusion. The restrictions of my project are maintaining continuity of the surface and fixing using mechanical methods as far as is possible. I plan to achieve my objectives by using cutting and bending and in so doing exploiting a combination of geometry and procedural instructions.
Quote ‘Imitating other materials may be an
interesting technical stunt for some engineers but it robs the new material of its birthright, destroys its identity and natural beauty, thereby degrading it’ Donald Dohner designer at Westinghouse company

Durapalm Coconut Palm Plywood
Good weight to strength ratio
Can be cut and joined using conventional methods
Available in many different grains
Has a familiar look as also used in flooring
Sustainable. Uses trees past their fruit bearing years
Market High costs in production due to use of sheet material= higher end of market
