A root is the basic meaning part of a word. It carries the most important part of the word’s meaning. Roots of English words often come from other languages, especially Latin.

The root usually needs a prefix or suffix to make it into a word.

A prefix is a meaningful word part that can be added to the beginning of a root or a base word
