R – Results of Exploration

• Discovery of a new eastern passage to Asia by the Portuguese

• Discovery of a new world by the Spanish

• Death of Native American populations in Central America

• Beginning of European slave trade in Africa

• Mass migration to the Americas in search of wealth

E – English Colonies are formed

• In 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh established a colony at Roanoke Island (North Carolina)

• Within three years all the colonistsdisappeared

• In 1607the English established anothercolony called Jamestown, VA (named after King James I)

E – English Colonies are formed

• In 1620 the Pilgrims who wanted religious freedom came to North America on the Mayflower

• On board the ship they agreed to base their government on the rule of the majority of men settlers

• Historians call this the “Mayflower Compact” it was the beginning of democracy in America

• The Pilgrims named their colony Plymouth, MA

S – Settlements of the French

• The first French colony was Quebec in present-day Canada and also along the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River

• The French mostly trapped animals and traded their furs

• In the 1680’s the French claimed Louisiana in the lower Mississippi Valley (named after King Louis XIV)

• Like the Spanish the French named their territory “New France”

U – Unified English Territory

• France and England tried to outdo one another in North America

• Both countries wanted money and power

• After a number of wars, France lost its land in North America

• The French and Indian War was a nine-year war between France and England

• When it ended in 1763, the English dominated half of the North American continent

L – Lots of help from the Natives

• Spanish ships introduced the natives to food and animals from Europe

• These same ships carried corn and potatoes back to Europe

• Corn and potatoes were easy to grow which resulted in fewer Europeans died from starvation

• Native Americas grew other crops like tobacco which Europeans first used as medicine then it became an important cash crop as it’s use increased

T – The influence of Europe on the world

• Europeans explored North and Latin America for more than two centuries

• The Spanish, Dutch, English, and French set up colonies in North America

• By the late 1800’s European nations had gained political and economic control of India, parts of the Middle East, and most of Africa Asia
