Simple Past
Subject + past tense verb
We use the simple past for a completed action in the past.
We drove home.We went home.I waited for you.Alberto read a book.
Past Continuous
Subject + Past (to be) + -ing verb
We use the past continuous for a a continuing action in the past.
We were driving home.We were going home.I was waiting for you.Alberto was reading a book.
When the Past Continuous and Simple past are used in the same sentence, the Past Continuous activity was in progress when the Simple Past action interrupted that activity.
I was working on my computer when my cell phone rang. (when = at the time)Or: My cell phone rang while I was working on my computer. (while = during that time)
I was working when my cellphone rang.I was sleeping when the alarm clock went off.We were talking when Sara interrupted to us.
When introduces the interruption.
1. George (fall) fell off the ladder while he was painting (paint) the ceiling.
2. While Tom (cook) the dinner, the phone (ring).
3. Ann (wait) for me at home when I (arrive) yesterday.
4. Tim (take) a photograph of me while I (not /look).
5. I (see) Carol at the party. She (wear) a really beautiful dress. 6. I (break) a plate last night. I (do) the washing up.
7. Last night I (read) in bed when suddenly I (hear) a scream.
8. We (not/go) out because it (rain).
9. We (do) our homework while our mum (cook) dinner.
10. I (see) Jim in the park. He (sit) on the grass and (read) a book.
Complete the sentences with the words in parentheses using the Simple Past or Past Continuous.
Underline the correct form of the verbs.
When I (arrived / was arriving) at the house, my mother (cooked / was cooking)
lunch. Five minutes later, the two of us (sat / were sitting) down to eat when the
telephone (rang / was ringing) . While I ( talked / was talking) on the phone,
