Six Sigma

A term used in statistics to represent standard

deviation an indicator of the degree of variation in a set of

a process. 

The word Six Sigma is a statistical term that

measures how far a given process deviates from

perfection.

The idea behind Six Sigma is that if you can

measure how many “defects”  you have in a process you

can systematically figure out how to eliminate them and

get as close to “zero defects” as possible.

Six Sigma stands for six standard deviation

from the mean. This provides techniques and

tools to improve capability and reduce defects in

any process i.e., it is a business improvement

approach that seeks to find and eliminate cause

of defects and errors in process by focusing onoutputs that are critical to customers.

“Six Sigma can be defined as a statistical measuring system togauge and attain perfection of product process and services” 

Business Definition

A break through strategy to significantly improve customer

satisfaction and shareholder value by reducing variability in

every aspect of business.

Technical Definition

A statistical term signifying 3.4 defects per million

opportunities.

Training and Cultural Change

• Improved performance does not and will not happenautomatically. High-caliber training is required.Disciplined implementation must follow, and people atall levels have to change the way they go about doingtheir jobs.

• In short, new ways of thinking, communicating, andoperating must pervade the entire organization. You

also need a methodology. DMAIC and DFSS provide astructured problem solving roadmap and tools towardsobtaining the results you expect.
