• 1) 过去进行时表示过去正在进行的动作 ,

而一般过去时则表示一个完整的动作。如：•     They were writing letters to their friends

• when 与 while区分：•

• (1) “当…的时候” ,如后面连接的动词为进行时态 ,则用 while多于用 when。而 when通常与瞬间性动词或延续性不强的动词连用。

• (2) 如果 while前后的动词都是进行时态 ,while可译为“与此同时”

• (3) 当 while前后的句子描述的情况相对或相反 ,while可译为“而” ,while更强调并列的对比而非转折。

• e.g. I am out-going while my sister is quiet a

nd shy.

•    总之 ,when表示做某种动作的时间或瞬间 ,

由其引导的时间状语的时态如果是一般过去时 ,其主句通常要用过去进行时。 while表示略长的一段时间 ,由其引导的时间状语从句用过去进行时 ,而主句时态根据实际情况而定。
