Christchurchearthquake

Please note that Auckland and Unitec are not affected by the Christchurch earthquakes or the aftershocks.

A beautiful part of paradise in the South Pacific, New Zealand is a land of contrasts. We are surrounded by unspoilt land and ocean; we have national parks, mountains, modern and vibrant cities. In a nutshell, we have got the lot! This means you can enjoy what New Zealand has on offer – you can ski, take part in all sorts of outdoor adventures, enjoy an unhurried and relaxed lifestyle, or take part in cultural and national celebrations.

Did you know that New Zealand is 2nd on the list of the world’s most peaceful countries according to the Global Peace Index? We are a nation of just over 4 million people with indigenous Māori and European New Zealanders, and influences from various countries: Pacific Island, Asian, African and other European cultures. We welcome all people to our shores and we practise all forms of religion, political debate and the freedom to speak our minds. New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the vote and we are also nuclear free!

Welcome to New Zealand (Aotearoa)

Auckland is the city of many lovers, according to its Māori name, Tamaki Makau Rau. It's true – we love Auckland and we are sure you will too.

Auckland is NZ’s largest city with approximately a third of the population living in this multicultural, lively and welcoming city. In fact, we’re so encompassing, we are now called a Super City!

According to Mercer rankings, Auckland is ranked 4th equal as the world’s best quality of living destination.

Check out www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/OurAuckland/Events

Auckland is a happening city – there is always something on! Check out some of the regular events that happen during the year such as:

Pasifika Festival Held every March, this is a colourful showcase of food, art, tattoo design, music and tapestry drawn from all around the Pacific – including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Vanuatu, PNG and the Cook Islands, just to name a few.

Music in the Parks From January to April every year there is a series of over 40 free music concerts in parks around the city, showcasing rising stars, much-loved jazz veterans, pop icons, hip hop superstars and always a few surprises!

Diwali Festival of Lights Held every October in different areas of Auckland, this is an amazing chance to experience Indian culture in our own backyard. Events include dancing, food and the lighting of the oil lamps (diyas) and candles.

International Film Festival Auckland has many film festivals throughout the year, featuring French films, Italian films, Spanish films, not to mention the huge International Film Festival each July. Visit www.nzff.co.nz for more info.

The Lantern Festival As one of Auckland’s most popular summer events, the Auckland Lantern Festival brings Chinese New Year celebrations to a glowing finale with hundreds of beautiful lanterns, great food, fortune telling and performances.

Waiheke Jazz Festival World-renowned jazz musicians play in a weekend-long festival celebrating jazz in all its forms.

Round the Bays Fun Run Join 70,000 other Aucklanders for this 13km fun run or walk around the waterfront and enjoy a barbeque at the end!

Devonport, Waiheke Island and Kumeu Wine and Food Festivals Sample the best of Auckland’s (and New Zealand’s) superb food and wine.

From your study to employment opportunitiesRegardless of your work or study experience, Unitec offers flexible pathways towards your chosen career.

At Unitec, you can build the study programme that suits you. You could start your studies at the appropriate level and pathway as you need too. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have good connections with their industry or profession.

Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, which gives you a competitive advantage when you start to apply for jobs. Undertaking work experience as part of your study gives you the opportunity to prove yourself and can open the doors to your very first job.

Our graduates find jobs Many of our graduates find employment in Auckland or other parts of New Zealand because employers are always looking for the combination of theory and practical skills our students gain at Unitec. Others choose to settle in other countries, as the qualification you gain will be internationally recognised and the practical experience you will bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.

Variation to Work VisaIf you are eligible to work 20 hours per week while you are studying, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays (December to February). Check out www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant for more information.

Graduate Job Search Visa (GJS)Once you have completed your studies and if you are eligible, you can apply for the GJS visa. This allows you to stay in NZ for up to one more year to seek employment in the area that you have studied.

Inland Revenue DepartmentYou must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. You can visit the IRD at their website www.ird.govt.nz

Part-time jobs There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland throughout the year from working in the hospitality industry, to office work and shop assistants for example. Some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a day.

“I first heard about Unitec when I was back in Fiji. I chose to study here because Unitec is internationally recognised as not just a theoretical but a practical learning institution. Because the tuition fees were lower than other places I was looking at, it was an easy decision. A highlight of my stay in New Zealand would have to be Wellington with its famous Wellington 7’s rugby competition. The landscape we saw on the way to Wellington was breathtaking and unique! On my next road trip I will try to go to the South Island to hopefully see snow for the first time!”

“I’ve been in New Zealand for almost four and a half years. When I first came here in 2007 I didn’t speak any English and it was quite hard living in an English-speaking country. However, a friend looked after me and taught me English until I passed my IELTS test. I chose to study at Unitec because I liked Unitec’s education system and I heard that Unitec is the best place in New Zealand if you want to study construction management. Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits from study at Unitec or other Tertiary Institutions in NZ or Overseas – Instructions for Form SAF 005

Guidelines for Credit recognition / Cross-creditsPlease note:

The maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitec’s courses.

If you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to:

» Obtain detailed course descriptions (in English) from the previous institution you studied at

» Complete the Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits (online or in the International Prospectus)

» Please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take 2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). Credit applications received less than two months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance will not be assessed in time.

Note: If the previous qualification is from New Zealand – Please take these items to any Student Central office on campus. (If you are in your final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. Provisional assessment can be made on this basis; your final results will be required to confirm any credits provisionally granted.)

If the previous qualification is from a country other than New Zealand – Please apply through the International Office; email the credit application form and course outlines as pdf or Word documents if possible as this allows faster assessment than hard copies.

STEP 1: CHECKLIST

Please complete and sign the SAF005 form and attach the following documents**

1. Verified true copy of academic record stating grades achieved and/or NZQA record of learning (do not send original documents)

2. Prescription/course outline/full course descriptor for each course you wish to transfer credit from and where applicable:

3. Verified and translated to English a true copy of degree/diploma certificate for completed qualifications

4. Details of applicable work experience (eg for Nursing where regulations allow for credit on the basis of supervised practice following registration)

5. Verified true copy of related qualifications and details of any additional relevant courses completed

** Where a verified/attested/certified copy is referred to above, you must provide a copy of each document certified by a Justice of the Peace, Solicitor or authorised Unitec agent with the following statement “I have sighted the original of this document and confirm that this is a true copy”.

STEP 2: SUBMIT THIS FORM with the International Student Application Form (there is no payment required with the form)

Please post, deliver or courier

The completed SAF005 Cross-credit form and the other documents listed above, securely attached To: Unitec, International Office, 139 Carrington Road, Mt Albert, Auckland 1025, New Zealand or

by mail to Private Bag 92025, Victoria St West, Auckland 1142, New Zealand.

Further information

All cross-credits granted are provisional until approved by the Programme Committee. The student will be formally advised of the Programme Committee’s decision in

writing. Cross-credits are only applicable to the programme for which they are approved. They cannot be reassigned to another programme. The information on this form

and on any attachments will be covered by the NZ Privacy Act 1993 and by Unitec’s Privacy of Information policy. Go to www.unitec.ac.nz and search for Privacy Policy for

further details. Unitec reserves the right to seek confirmation of the authenticity and accuracy of any documentation provided by other tertiary institutions or referees. Definitions from Academic Statute:

“Assessment of Prior Learning (APL)” is a process in which evidence of achievement of outcomes is assessed by Unitec staff. “Cross-credit” means the award of credit in recognition of successful equivalent study, at the same or a higher level, in the context of another programme and in accordance with the institution’s policy on credit recognition.
