UNITY... FAITH, EXCELLENCE, SERVICE
HOME BULLETIN February 4, 2020
1. UNITY CHRISTIAN AND THE INFUSION PROJECT PRESENT: TEENS AND SCREENS:
HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? The social, emotional, and educational impact of digital technology in
2020. Students today are digital natives. The ubiquitous presence of technology – the internet,
tablets, laptops, smart products, and cell phones – defines their generation and despite the
wishes of some, the high tech culture is here to stay.
The daily use of technology, especially phones, continues to increase. Current research shows
teens spend, on average, more than seven hours each day looking at screens (not including
time spent on homework). The average age at which a student receives their first smartphone
is ten. Additionally, parents face increasing challenges keeping pace with the rapidly evolving
world of social media to which students are exposed.
What are a school, parents, and a community to do? Join us: at Unity Christian High School on
Wednesday, February 26, for a presentation and conversation about digital technology. Using
reliable, recent, and relevant research, we will explore the impact technology – especially cell
phones – has on young minds and lives. Emphasis will be given on the developmental impact
social media has on students.
2. LATE START: There will be a late start on Wednesday, February 12. For all students riding a
bus, the bus schedule will remain the same and you will arrive to school at your normal
scheduled time. For students who drive or arrive other than a bus, school will begin at
8:25 a.m. (first bell rigs at 8:20 a.m.).
3. NEW STUDENT NIGHT: The final New Student Night is Wednesday, February 5, beginning
at 7:00 p.m. in Unity’s multipurpose gym. The night consists of a tour of the building with
brief descriptions of what students will experience and learn, a time where counselors explain
the curriculum and course selections, and at the end of the evening, students can pick up a
Unity Christian t-shirt. Please call the office (669-1820) or email [email protected] if
you have any questions or would like to sign up for this evening.

6. WINTERFEST: The two weeks of Winterfest creates community among students and staff.
These two weeks include crazy dress-up days and competitions between classes. Many staff
are involved in the dress-up days and competitions as well which creates another element of
community building. On Friday, February 14, the final day of Winterfest, each class
participates in the culminating event – the lip sync. For one hour, students and staff come
together celebrating the two weeks of fun and school spirit by cheering each other on during
the lip sync. All lip syncs are taped and posted to YouTube for parents to view. This day is
meant for the students and staff at Unity, but if parents want to attend, we ask that you arrive
at school by 1:15 p.m. to check in . At 1:25, all doors of school will be locked as all staff and
students attend the lip sync.
Winterfest festivities will be held in the evening when our varsity basketball teams play
NorthPointe Christian. The recognition of our Winterfest host and hostesses will take place at
