UNIVERSITY DESTINATIONS
In addition to focusing on exam preparation, students also develop further vital academic skills, such as research, thesis writing and presentations. These competencies are deemed by many universities as excellent preparation for the demands of
higher education, making IB students a popular choice for them.
HOLISTIC APPROACH
In keeping with the IB ethos, we provide a well-rounded, internationally-minded educational environment that fosters the development of students into active contributors to society who are:
• Inquirers• Knowledgeable• Thinkers• Communicators• Principled• Open-minded• Caring• Risk Takers• Balanced• Reflective
While the academic advancement of our students is certainly a focal point of our school, we understand that it is equally important to help students discover and develop their personal interests to grow into healthy, happy, intelligent young peop-le. Our extracurricular and pastoral programmes are of great value throughout the entire school, and help us ensure that our students’ needs are being wholly met.
LIVE LOCALLY, LEARN GLOBALLY
The International Secondary School is one branch of the Cologne International School - Internationale Friedens- schule Köln - campus, which is being shared with the bilingual primary school and German gymnasium (secondary school). This unique approach enables the blending of our inter- national and local communities to create a vibrant, global environment with a strong sense of belonging here in Cologne, Germany. In this context, our international students develop both English and German language skills rapidly, making them comfortable in the local community, while providing them with a high-quality educational programme that provides access to top universities around the world.
Our language of instruction is English, with German regarded as a core academic subject throughout the school. Our comprehensive English as an Additional Language programme caters for students who need in-class support or other assistance accessing the curriculum in English. Moreover, we offer Spanish and French as additional language courses with certification opportunities. In the International Baccalaure-ate Diploma Programme students can also choose to study literature in their native language under the guidance of an appointed advisor.
INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING
Through the use of continuous assessment, we aim to iden-tify the learning needs of each individual student in each subject. We then help pupils develop learning strategies, offering targeted support for those in need and providing challenging opportunities for our academically gifted students, enabling and guiding each young person to reach their full potential. Due to our wide range of course options and extracurricular activities, students are well equipped to focus on their areas of interest. Our intensive advisory and support system ensures that each pupil is meeting the necessary academic require-ments to successfully obtain their high school qualification.
QUALIFICATIONS THAT COUNT
We utilize the International Baccalaureate and Cambridge International academic programmes, designed to provide our students with optimal access to higher education and dynamic careers. After completing year 5 of the IB Primary Years Programme, and Cambridge Secondary 1 in gra-des 6-8, students move onto exam-based programmes and qualifications in the upper years. Grades 9-10 study for the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), which is followed by the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in grades 11-12, a prestigious, college-preparatory course recognized by universities in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
