SIGNIFICANCE oF THE ScHooL SYMBOL
This symbol of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing
has been used since September of 1913. The antique lamp
represents the metaphysical sciences; the telescope, the physical
sciences; the plow, the industrial arts; and the artist's palette
represents the fine arts. These are the four dimensions of a
Baccalaureate education. Above and below are the crosses of St.
George, which have stood for unselfish service for centuries. We
are proud of this heritage.
CLASS OF 1993 NURSING OATH
In the presence of family, faculty, and those assembled here, I
solemnly promise to uphold the profession of nursing honoring
those nurses who have practiced before me.
My profession is an honored one. The concept of holism is
highly valued and I will care for my clients in all aspects of life;
spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.
I will administer treatment and medication to the best of my
ability and knowledge; never with the intent to do harm.
I will act in partnership with physicians and other health
professionals to deliver the most complete care possible.
I will impart to my clients the knowledge that I have gained so
that they may be fully aware of their condition.
I will act on behalf of my clients, their families, and their
communities so that their needs and wishes may be heard.
I will act in accordance with the law and do what is ethical,
moral and just.
I will care for all clients regardless of race, color, creed, sex,
politics, social standing or affliction.
I take this oath solemnly and freely, and fully accept there
wards and responsibilities given to me as a nurse.
