The Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP), estab-lished in 2004, is the only private school of pharmacy in Texas. The FSOP is a state-of-the-art facility at the forefront of pharmacy education that offers students a highly sought after Spanish-language track. One of the school’s unique aspects is the patient assess-ment lab. In the lab, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations or OSCEs allow faculty to work with students to apply their classroom knowledge to patient simulations. Students assess mock patients and work to develop disease state management plans, providing faculty with the ability to better evaluate students. Undergraduate students interested in the science of vision, a biomedical graduate research career, or a career as a vision-science or ophthalmic-related specialist can enroll in UIW’s pre-optometry track or Vision Science Pro-gram. The BS in Vision Science will also provide students with an opportunity to earn a degree that will satisfy the requirements for entrance in the School of Optometry as well as other health-related professional programs, such as medicine and dentistry, offered through other colleges. The UIW School of Optometry has received pre-accredita-tion approval by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association and will also offer students an opportunity to pursue a Spanish certificate. The UIW School of Optometry is the only faith-based School of Optometry in the U.S..

The H-E-B School of Business & Administration is proud to provide students the ability to take their education and apply it to real-world issues while still in school. The highly successful Capstone programs allow students to work directly with business professionals throughout the world on projects that result in hands-on experiences. UIW was one of the first universities in the country to emphasize an experiential, client-project approach for undergradu-ates. In our Capstone classes faculty integrate knowledge gained throughout the degree program and work with students to apply it using a case study approach and then with a real life client. Students work in multi-disciplinary teams with members from the various concentrations (accounting, manage-ment, marketing, MIS, etc.) represented in the project team. Undergraduate students may pursue bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a choice of several concentrations, such as account-ing, Hispanic marketing, and international business, as well as an accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree in accounting. All business programs are nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The goal of the BBA degree program is for each student to develop a broad understanding of how the elements and processes of business organizations relate to one another and to the external environment. In the School of Math, Science and Engineering (MSE) students are encouraged to participate in a variety of research projects and ongoing programs providing hands-on experience to undergraduate students that is unprecedented. In addi-tion, MSE students are frequently invited to present their work at workshops and conferences throughout the country. This is yet another unique feature offered to MSE undergraduate students. Most MSE programs have student-run organizations including Chemistry Club, Biology Club, Math Club and Engineering Club. The goal of these undergraduate student organizations is to promote awareness, interest, diversity and involvement of the university campus and our local community in science and science-related disciplines. Students participate in community service projects that are related to science as well as projects that help our surrounding community and campus. The different undergraduate science clubs are unparalleled resources to their student members who benefit from a range of services and activities. The members are encouraging, energetic and supporting where community service and entertainment meet and create an atmosphere of friendship and partnership that only Incarnate Word can offer.

TUESDAY On Tuesday, UIW students continue their academic journey full of energy, as the week is just beginning. Future educators can be found at the Dreeben School of Education where they are prepared for work inside the classroom. The education faculty is a diverse group of educa-tors, all certified teachers, who frequently meet with area school districts to gauge their needs and ensure that UIW stays at the forefront of educational movements. With small classes of 8 to 20 students, the teacher education faculty is able to provide individual support and assistance to students as they progress through the program. Field work, for our students, begins as early as their first year in the Dreeben School of Education to provide future educators a sense of comfort in the classroom. Education students spend more than 400 hours in the field even before student teaching begins. Our goal is to have a UIW graduate teaching in every school in our area. UIW offers Texas certification in elementary, secondary, and all-level teaching fields. In addition, the university’s J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library is the primary research facility for children’s play and play environments and home to the largest research collection on this topic in the United States. Dr. Joe Frost, often called the contemporary father of play advo-cacy and known all over the world for over 30 years of work on early childhood and children’s play environments, donated the collection. Bachelor’s degrees are available in Biology, Chemis-try, Engineering Management, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Nutrition and Meteorology. These programs challenge students and prepare them for professional careers or graduate school. MSE graduates are prepared for careers in industry, government agencies, environ-mental studies, medical technology teaching, research and pre-professional programs like medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, nuclear medi-cine etc. UIW also offers the only broadcast meteorology program in Texas. The meteorology degree program gives students tools needed for the purpose of research into the dynamics of the Earth’s atmosphere, weather analysis and weather forecasting. UIW’s School of Nursing and Health Profes-sions provides an excellent student-centered education to promote leadership development in the respective health disciplines. Our faculty of skilled practitioners strives for new ways to foster students’ learning and is respected in the community for their teaching, research and service. The School of Nursing and Health Professions offers degree programs in Athletic Training, Nursing, Kinesiology, Pre-Physical Therapy and Nuclear Medicine Science. For nearly a century, Incarnate Word’s Nursing Program has been a regional leader for nurs-ing excellence and education. Choosing UIW’s School of Nursing provides students with smaller class sizes, unique clinical opportuni-ties, and one-on-one interactions with faculty. Our nursing program is approved by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas and fully accredited by the Commission on Col-legiate Nursing Education. The pass rate of our graduates on the licensure examination is consistently above the pass rate for the state. WEDNESDAY

By Wednesday, students in the School of Interactive Media and Design (SIMD) are com-pletely immersed in their project of choice. SIMD integrates five academic programs in a dynamic way to better serve the needs of our students and all our programs emphasize the use of the latest software and computer technology. Whatever the project, SIMD is abuzz with activity as students gain hands-on experience and prepare for life beyond UIW. Computer Information Systems (CIS) is among the many sought after degrees in SIMD. The CIS program was developed for students wanting a technical understanding of computer systems as well as knowledge about the business environ-ment in which they are often used. CIS classes often include applications in other subject areas, providing an opportunity for students to work together with the community. An interesting facet of CIS is the use of “Second Life,” a real-time 3-D multi-user virtual environment to enhance the learning experience in several classes. In “Sec-ond Life” UIW students are able to collaborate on projects not only with each other, but also with students around the world.

notes UIW’s Computer Graphic Arts is the only program of its kind in Texas, and offers demanding classes that allow students to explore new areas, broaden-ing their outlook and sharpening their skills. Our professors and instructors are continually taking the pulse of the dynamic market and investigating new options for our students. Graduates are prepared for careers in graphic arts, Web design, and 3-D anima-tion. Communication Arts offers a blend of theory-driven and experienced based classes. Classes are designed to provide students with skills necessary to enter the media industry in a variety of capacities from multimedia production, print or broadcast jour-nalism or public relations. Students can choose from one of five concentrations: Production, Journalism, Media Studies, Bilingual Communication or Speech. Stephanie Hall is a senior Communication Arts major. She is an honor student and serves as a student coordinator, peer mentor, summer orientation leader and as a student liaison with the Office of Admissions.

The KUIW Web cast originates from the Communication Arts Department. The internet radio station, run entirely by students enrolled in Radio Practicum and by UIW volunteers, addresses all aspects of running a radio station from management to production. KUIW is an open-format music station broadcasting not only to listeners in our local com-munity, but to listeners worldwide.

UIW’s Fashion Management program is a unique blend of two disciplines, fashion design and fashion merchandising. The fashion design program consists of a collection of courses aimed specifically at apparel de-sign and construction. The fashion merchandising pro-gram teaches concepts vital as students embark upon careers in fashion retail and wholesale. The program culminates in the Annual “Cutting Edge” Fiesta Fashion Show, a high level, New York-style runway presentation completely produced by the students.

THURSDAY As the week winds down, students not only attend class but can also participate in the activities, athlet-ics and organizations available on campus. Campus life is inclusive and supportive with a variety of student organizations. Campus Ministry provides students community service opportunities allowing students to truly live the Mission of the university. In addition, each Thursday evening students are encouraged to grow in their faith through fellowship, sharing, reflection, music and fun. Bible study, Catholic Liturgy and interdenominational worship services are also offered to students weekly.

UIW is known for the outstanding education provided to students in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS). HASS faculty will encourage you to cultivate a breadth of knowledge and develop skills required for a lifetime of opportuni-ties setting you on a path to success. Because of their broad based education, graduates are attractive to employers in business, the arts, education, the medi-cal and legal professions, and in social service oc-cupations. Students interested in medicine, dentistry, law, and other professional fields often major in liberal arts as an excellent foundation for entrance into pro-fessional schools. HASS students may participate in research and study abroad, international internships, and course based travel abroad. The college offers degree programs in Cultural Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Political Sci-ence, Psychology, Religious Studies, Spanish and Sociology. Majors are also available in Art, Music and Theatre. Minors are available in Art History, Justice and Peace, Modern Languages, Pre-Law and Speech Communication as well as in many major areas. It’s mid-afternoon as students sit near the grotto under towering oak trees working on various projects. Because the UIW campus is a fully-networked wireless campus, students can access the internet anytime, anywhere making research a snap. UIW is committed to integrating computer technology into the learning experience of all students. Students are required to have a laptop and have the option of purchasing a Dell laptop through the university for a one time fee. An integral part of faculty/student commu-nication is the campus portal system called Blackboard. UIW faculty use Blackboard as a way to incorporate Web based instruction with classroom discussion. This means students go online in class, access databases and information, and create projects using current software applications.

notes There are many ways to unwind near Incarnate Word’s 154-acre campus. Located just minutes from downtown San Antonio in Alamo Heights, the surrounding area is filled with a variety of tourist attrac-tions including the Witte Museum, the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and Brackenridge Park. Brackenridge Park is home to the San Antonio Zoo and the Japanese Tea Gardens, and is filled with trails and other scenic areas to run, walk, or just enjoy an afternoon picnic or barbecue. In addition to being located in one of the most picturesque parts of the city, UIW’s well-tended grounds, trees, blooming flowers, and classic architecture, provide a comfortable envi-ronment to study, think and just hang out with friends. Students can also relax and visit with new friends over a meal or with coffee at one of UIW’s four great on-campus dining locations. Marian Hall Café, Hortencia’s Café, Java on the Hill and Finnegan’s Coffee Shop feature a wide variety of hot meals, pizza, soups, sandwiches, desserts, and even Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks Coffee. Students can use cash, credit cards or their meal plan at any of the on-campus dining locations.

SATURDAY Student athletics are an important part of life on the UIW campus and weekends allow stu-dents to enjoy UIW athletics at their best. UIW is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division II, and a member of the Heartland Conference. In 2010, UIW will become a member of the Lone Star Confer-ence. With the addition of football, UIW’s athletic programs now boast 19 teams representing 12 different sports, more than any other NCAA Division II school in the state. The university offers intercollegiate sports programs in men’s and women’s swimming, cross-country, soccer, basketball, track and field, golf, and tennis. In ad-dition, the University sponsors the intercollegiate sports of volleyball, synchronized swimming, and softball for women and baseball for men. Cheer-leading is a sponsored program conducted under the Department of Athletics. The Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, a 3000-seat football facility will be home to Cardinal football, soccer and track.

The university also offers intercollegiate sports programs in men’s and women’s swimming, cross-country, soccer, basketball, track and field, golf and tennis. In addition, the university sponsors the intercollegiate sports of volley-ball, synchronized swimming, and softball for women and baseball for men. Cheerleading is a sponsored program conducted under the Department of Athletics. Incarnate Word coaches are professionals in their field and play an integral role in the lives of UIW student athletes. Our coaches include men’s baseball coach Danny Heep who played on two World Series Championship teams, the New York Mets in 1986 and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1988; 1996 Olympic swimmer Kim Wurzel LoPorto who coaches women’s synchronized swimming and was also a member of the 2000 United States Olympic synchro team; John Smith, Cardinals men’s soccer coach is a native of Wigan, England, where he played professional soccer; and Tina Patterson who has led the UIW women’s soccer program for over 12 years and is the most success-ful women’s soccer coach in UIW history. UIW offers state-of-the-art facilities not only for its aca-demic programs but for its athletic and leisure programs as well. The UIW Wellness Center features an aerobics room, treadmills, Stairmasters, lifecycles, steppers and ellipti-cal trainers. The Wellness Center is available to students seven days a week. The Ann Barshop Natatorium is home to UIW’s competitive and synchronized swim teams. National and international events are hosted at the facility showcasing UIW’s continued commitment to maintaining top quality facilities, used by professional athletes from across the nation.

Alex Yatsko, a junior originally from Minsk Belarus, is a Computer Information Systems major. Yatsko brought home UIW’s first NCAA II National Championship title in swimming, was named UIW’s 2008 Male Athlete of the year and also earned four All America distinctions this season.

Sunday provides students the opportunity to worship at one of two Catholic Masses offered at Our Lady’s Chapel located on the main campus. Students of other denominations are greeted enthu-siastically as welcomed guests at nearby churches in the surrounding Alamo Heights area. Sunday is also a time for students to enjoy their campus home. The residence halls and apartments are an excellent place to meet new friends, participate in activities, develop new interests and learn to live and grow in a community rich in diversity. UIW offers ten student dormitories featuring single, double and triple living accommodations. A professional staff of administra-tors, graduate hall advisors and resident assistants are available to students 24 hours a day. All campus residences are wired for the internet and provide basic cable and telephone service. Admissions Qualified applicants are admitted on a continual or rolling basis, throughout the year for fall, spring and summer se-mesters. However, it is recommended that the application process be completed in a timely fashion, allowing suffi-cient time to process financial aid awards. Office of Career Services The Office of Career Services is committed to provid-ing career counseling and education to students in all UIW programs and alumni. The services offered include individual career counseling, personality and career as-sessment, resume and cover letter development, career related workshops and software resources. A career resource library is also available. The center provides job search assistance to help students secure employment through mock interviews, on-campus interviews, listings of job vacancies, and train-ing in job-search skills. The center’s staff monitors the employment needs of the San Antonio community, school districts, business and social services agencies. Assis-tance is provided to students who are seeking work-study, student employment on campus, part-time and seasonal work off campus, internships and cooperative educational opportunities as well.
