From the President am writing this report two weeks before the newsletter is sent to you and seven weeks before the start of

this year’s Term 1. Seven weeks seems such a long time to wait before feasting on new knowledge.

For two months we have had no U3A classes or lectures to attend, so it's a long time between feasts. But fortunately we have already started on the hors d’oeuvres of summer school. We are so blessed to have such a wonderfully varied summer school program and on behalf of us all I congratulate and thank Rose Marwick for creating it.

Rose Marwick: summer school organiser

For me, U3A is a great source of knowledge and a constant reminder that everyone we meet knows something we don’t.

I look forward to the variety of subjects our classes and lectures provide and always wonder whether they will reinforce or explode any of my prejudices. My hope is that the more knowledge I gain the less ultracrepidarian I am likely to become. Ultracrepidarian is a newly learned word for me. It means a person with opinions on subjects beyond their knowledge.

Term 1 starts in the Philip Smith Centre on 10 March and I look forward to seeing you there.

John Green PRESIDENT

VALE JOAN LOUDON, 27/7/1926 -24/11/2019

Joan Loudon conducted a creative writing class at U3A for an amazing 27 years, retiring at the age of ninety-two, only about a year before she died. Joan was a school English teacher for many years in Hobart and is remembered by many of her students for her inspiration and guidance. Her U3A class encouraged many to try writing down thoughts and research in poetry or prose. As the students read their work to one another a strong sense of community developed, leading many to apply early each year so as to be included in their favourite activity for the week. It became a way of hearing one another’s life stories as well as learning to write more creatively and clearly. She was awarded an OAM for her service to teaching. At her request her funeral was conducted by one of her class, John McRae (a retired minister), while four other members of the class participated by reading poetry and tributes. Thanks for your wonderful contribution, Joan.

U3A Parking Area – off Aberdeen Street (opposite Corinda) Available 9.00am – 3.30pm Monday — Thursday

U3A members are especially asked to use this facility

U3A pays an annual fee to hire these premises from Domain Tennis. The area has spaces for up to 70 cars, which means that more spaces in the region are available for the benefit of Glebe residents and other street users while allowing us to have reliable and safe parking every term.

New Permit Vouchers are required for 2020. They will be issued in the Common Room during first week of Term I. Please note that you must display your voucher on the dashboard every time you park there.

It is important to leave the parking in Edward and Lower Aberdeen Streets free for those members who are less mobile.

Residents in Edward Street opposite the Philip Smith Centre have occasionally had their driveways blocked by parked cars – not necessarily by U3A members, of course. Please be aware of residents’ driveways when parking, dropping off or picking up your friends.

The Summer Picnic What a gift of a day we had for our summer picnic! Clear blue skies and sparkling sunshine, excellent coffee served to our table under the dappled shade of yellow gums at The Springs, and the convivial company of 25 U3A members.

Rob Armstrong from Hobart City Council, our fabulous guide from last year, took us around the newly reconstructed Exhibition Gardens path. Rob shared his great passion for our environment and his amazing breadth of knowledge with us as he pointed out features many of us had not ever noticed before. His Vegemite, cheese, and Salada biscuit analogy of the formation of the Organ Pipes will stay with me whenever I look up to our beloved mountain.

We finished our day enjoying our packed lunches while chatting and relaxing. A marvellous day.

PROGRAM CO-ORDINATOR’S NOTES — TERM 1

ur excellent popular tutors are with us again in 2020, and the program for first term looks very promising. I am happy to welcome two new tutors for Italian, Giulia Roncon and Gianna Staples. For the last two years Elizabeth Longo has

conducted the classes, and we thank her for her generous contribution. We also farewell Jack Lickiss as a tutor and thank him for his contribution to U3A

for more than 20 years. Following heart surgery last year he was no longer able to conduct the film sessions, and Diane Hill has kindly taken over that responsibility. She and Jack have selected films from his great collection for the coming term. I also take this opportunity to thank Estelle McCarthy, who was Jack’s class secretary for over a decade.

Please note an alteration to the Provisional Program: On Monday, 11.30-12.30, Professor Basil Sansom has replaced Dr Peter Duncan Jones, who will now give his course on Asia in second term.

As always, I urge you to enrol early. Several classes fill in a couple of days. We have a new Membership and Enrolment Secretary, Larainne Robertson, who has volunteered to take on this role. She is a most experienced manager and will give you any assistance you require.

On behalf of members I thank all those people who contribute to the success of the U3A organisation: our excellent tutors, who entertain us every year; our AV experts Tim McDougall, John Adams, Sue Mulcahy, Ken Sutherland, and Mick Sheehan who are always there; Brian Haas, Adrian Jowett, and Astrid Wright, who set up the theatre every week; the co-ordinators and class secretaries who are kept very busy; and the wonderful members who have been on the morning tea roster for years.

We do need a couple more volunteers for that roster. If you can assist, please contact me on 6225 2230. U3A is an entirely volunteer organisation; it would not exist without the free gift of people’s time.

I hope you enjoy the term.

Vina Gee: appeal for a missing precious book

I accidentally left two books in the Common Room some months ago. Someone in the writing class found the English version and returned it to me, but I am still missing the original French book. Its title is:

MINAUX 1923-1986 Un peintre temoin de son temp

by Helene Minaux

The cover of the book is black and white, with a portrait of Andre Minaux on the front. About 220 pages including illustrations. This edition had been a bit damaged in the mail. The book was very precious to me; I met the artist Andre Minaux and his wife Helene during my ‘Au Pair’ year 1953-54, the book was sent to me by the Minaux family.

S Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Ian Duffy Th How I wonder what you are. The behaviour of the largest objects in our universe is determined by the nature of the smallest. Join me on this stellar adventure, and wonder no longer.

Finally we cool down, stretching arms, legs, neck, and shoulders.

A How Art Appreciation Enriches the 3rd Age (10/3-7/4) Jan Peacock Th Research says gallery-goers live longer — but those who know how to really LOOK and APPRECIATE have better mental and emotional health. Rousseau said that running a country was so difficult we need gods as legislators. We will look at examples of difficult choices in public life in contemporary and recent history. Brexit is a case in point. Such choices often have a complicated moral dimension as in the restitution of historical art thefts, or the price to be paid for some kinds of knowledge. The class will discuss these problems.

H Play Reading (1.00 – 2.00 pm) Marlene Lette LR We will read and discuss plays known and not so well known. Copies of the plays are usually provided. The emphasis is on sharing and enjoyment. No experience needed. Do join us.

L Introduction to Latin David Daintree LR ‘Latin … killed the ancient Romans, and now it’s killing me.’ Well, it didn’t really kill the Romans and it won’t do you any harm either. It may even do you some good. It was the lingua franca of Europe for nearly 2000 years and is the major contributor to the English dictionary. This course is for absolute beginners. It won’t be a doddle, but it will surprise and even delight you in a number of ways. At the very least you’ll discover things you didn’t know about your own language. Try it!

SS Factors controlling Tasmania's plant communities: Neil Davidson Th (5 Weeks: 22/4-20/5)

The patterns of plant communities in Tasmania are broadly controlled by geology, climate, and fire, but often within regions it is local extremes that limit plants: extremes of temperature (frost, heatwave), water availability (drought, flood), salinity (influx of toxins), light and nutrient deficiency. We will study these and how they are exacerbated by climate change.

A New Year and a new Membership and Enrolment Secretary

Last year’s call for help to support the work of membership and enrolment brought us three enthusiastic volunteers, Larainne Robertson, Polly Firth, and Ismail Ibrahim. Their help ensured the enrolments for Terms 2 & 3 of 2019 went smoothly and quickly. We now have five members who can support this important and time-consuming process. Furthermore, Larainne Robertson has volunteered to take on the role of Membership and Enrolment Secretary. Larainne comes with great organisational credentials, having previously provided administrative/secretarial and financial management support for local theatre companies and sporting clubs over the past 20 years.

We thank Ken Johnson for his work in managing our membership and enrolment process since mid-2017, when he took over from Kate Walpole, who was in the role for seven years. Ken, together with Alison Waters, was responsible for implementing our new online M&E system, UMAS. This now allows members to enrol directly in classes and to view and update their own membership records. Ken will continue to support the system technically and assist Larainne if required. With his newly gained leisure he plans to cruise the waters of southeast Tassie and may even have time to attend U3A classes again.
