The Legend ofSANTA CLAUS

You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout.I’m telling you why: Santa Claus is coming to town!

Santa Claus is a figure with legendary, mythical,

historical and folkloric origins who, in many western cultures, is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24. The original St. Nicholas lived in south-western Turkey in the 4th century. As the bishop of Myra he was credited with doing a number of miracles involving sailors and children. After his death as a saint he was given his own “feast day” that was celebrated on December 6th. At

about the same time Nicholas lived, Pope Julius I decided to establish a date for the celebration of the birth of Jesus in December 25th. There had long been a pagan midwinter festival at this time of year and the Pope hoped to use the holiday to Christianize the celebrations. Eventually, Saint Nicholas’s feast day also became associated with December 25th and his connection with Christmas was established. The modern figure in the American society was derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, may

have part of its basis in tales concerning the historical figure of gift giver Saint Nicholas. Perhaps nothing has fixed the image of Santa Claus so firmly in the American mind as a poem entitled A Visit from St. Nicholas written by Clement Moore in 1822. Moore, a professor of biblical languages at New York’s Episcopal Theological Seminary, drew upon the early New Amsterdam traditions and added some elements from German legends. In the poem, Moore depicts the Saint as a tiny man with a sleigh drawn by eight miniature reindeer. They

because American artist Norman Rockwell had done a number of paintings with Saint Nick wearing red and white including A Drum for Tommy which appeared on the cover of The Country Gentleman in 1921. SANTA PHYSICS (CRITICISM) In January of 1990, an article appeared in Spy magazine under the name of Richard Waller that was skeptical of Santa’s capability to do what he supposedly does each Christmas Eve. Among other things Waller stated that Santa needs to visit approximately 92 million households or said differently 75.5 million miles. He calculated that Santa’s sleigh must move at a speed of 650 miles per second, 3000 times faster than the speed of sound, to complete its route. Waller sarcastically ends the article noting that if there ever was a Santa, taking in account his calculations, he must now be dead. High-Tech Santa -Fantasy Among numerous negations that have been written to the Spy magazine article was that of Roger Highfield. He wrote the book “Can Reindeer Fly? The Science of Christmas”. In this book he suggests that Santa might have

some high tech solutions to his problems. The impact in our society -What if he died? The effect of modern technology on the modern society has seen, in part at least, the demotion of fairy tales from family life and children growing rationally earlier. The sense that society is safe and fun can be promoted by introducing children to fantasy characters like Santa. It is hard to think a childhood without fantastic characters since our own imaginations were nurtured by them. It is for these reasons that parents should be aware of the benefits for their children of cherishing the magic of Santa Clause. He is a symbol of hope. Belief in him teaches children the values of role models, family bonding and pro-social behavior, including sharing, as well as promoting cognitive benefits like enhanced fantastical thinking, expansion of the internal world and purposeful play. If families allow Santa to fade into darkness, we may deny future generations of a fantasy that may be precious to their cognitive and social growth.

fly him from house to house and at each residence he comes down the chimney to fill stockings hung by the fireplace with gifts. Moore got the reindeer from the people of northern Scandinavia and Finland usage of reindeer to pull their sledges. The Coca-Cola Company has often been cited for cementing the image of Santa with the colors red and white through a series of popular advertisements in the 1940’s depicting Saint Nick enjoying their product. In fact, Santa was already well associated with these colors by that time

Role MODEL Forum...organized by the WORKAFROLICS

The first Role Model Forum organized by The Workafrolics

was held on December 8th, at UNYT 5B. Our first Role Model, as we call it, was Professor Dr. Juna Miluka. Personally I was very enthusiastic about having her as our guest speaker. Together with a friend, we decided to call this forum “How to be a successful woman”, since we all consider professor Miluka a very successful woman. At first we had some ‘’problems’’ on having guys participants. However I was very surprised when they showed up

and even stayed outside the room because of too many people who attended. On the other hand, another nice surprise was when Dr. Miluka herself started off her speech by talking about how to be a successful person. All of us were very inspired by her words and especially by her way of giving the message. As she put it, “The very good measure of success is to be true to yourself”. This is exactly what all of us are seeking in these forums, to try to find inspiration in the models that we have in our university. I cannot help but think about her words, “We want our future leaders to do it all and to try for excellence”. Since then, constantly I ask myself this question, however now I guess I am more optimistic about reaching my goals and achieving success because I know that if you really try and work hard everything is possible. I want to thank all of the Workafrolics for giving their help to make this forum happen. Now we are preparing the next forum which will be held hopefully before the finals so everyone is illuminated enough to succeed.

On December, we organized a forum, more like a meeting, with

Mrs. Juna, one of our Economics professors. During her discussions I was very impressed maybe because there were exactly the words that

The first forum of our group was opened with Dr. Juna Miluka, a great

person and a great professor not just for the lessons but also for the life. Dr. Miluka shared a lot of her experience with us and showed me a path which I should follow to be as successful as her. Being kind is one of the keys to success, as she said. In my opinion that is the key as well and we should use it to open our world in the future. Moreover, what I understood from her speech was that without passion the profession will be just something that you must do and it will be against your desire and what you really want. However, she mentioned that this passion should be in a certain amount and not going out of the boundaries of normality, meaning that forgetting everything else and focusing in one thing. Our horizon should be as wide as possible, to see everything and to chose the best of that. As I said, Dr. Miluka is a great person and a great teacher not just for lessons but also for life.

I wanted to hear from a long time. When I was listening to what she was saying about her time when she was just a young girl and how challenging was for her to be in this position that we see now, it was very interesting and during that hour I was going in another world but with a special sound of her inspiring words. I was thinking for my own future. Also I had something in common with our professor because in my opinion what a person should have is first of all strength to go straight in life and pass many difficulties and many disappointing aspects that life challenges us, because nothing is impossible. Moreover, she said that we have to learn a lot and we have to listen our heart. Maybe, for these last words I am not sure but as I saw her eyes which had a very strong passion to learn and to help the world, every doubt vanishes. Mrs.Juna is an individual who gives everyday lessons and advices in her classes. Even though I’m not her student, I am very happy for those students who love to do something good and that have a deep passion to achieve what they really like. This was the message which professor Miluka gave us that day of the forum - a real lecture of life!

What our group is focused on primarily is Passion, this great feeling which

makes your whole existence grow and gives it a real meaning. Waking up with the desire to start working and having fun on what you love the most, is the greatest blessing you could ever have. People do dedicate most of their time on working, so we believe it would be terribly sad not to do what you are seeking for. It is like the Steve Jobs said: ‘Keep looking! Don’t settle !It is exactly passion which will cheer you up over hard times and challenges ,it is passion which will never abandon you and will always be by your side reminding you to never let go ,no matter how hard it gets. That is why we chose as our first guest speaker Dr.Juna Miluka. It is her enthusiasm and dedication to what she does, which are both remarkable, and this explains perfectly why everyone wanted to join the discussion and some even stood outside the room so they could listen to what she had to say. We believe we chose this major for more than having a degree, high grades, or getting a comfortable job tomorrow. We believe we did it because of Passion, because it will be great to wake up everyday and work on it for the rest of our lives. We

believe that deepening our knowledge by surrounding ourselves with Workafrolics and joining this club,we are also expanding our social network. Not only focusing on the external side, such as our events with carefully chosen guests, we will also have the internal one, which would include having debates about current issues that affect economy world, law issues and public relations issues. We will also read periodically prestigious newspapers or magazines such as the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, or books that can help us in this field. The great challenge and a bit weird thing about all this is making it Fun. We believe it is about working hard and having fun. It is like Anthony Robbins said: ’ It is about the Science of achievement and the art of fulfillment’.

Project Villages of Mirdita - Gojan i Vogel

UNYT Charity Club has accomplished two projects in

its first semester of establishment. The project started with the collection of clothes from UNYT students, faculty and staff for two weeks. After collecting the clothes, the club members were in charge of selecting and packing the clothes in baskets for each family in the list. Families in the list were selected in collaboration with NGO Partner for Children. These clothes were aimed to be distributed at one of the poorest villages of Mirdita - Gojan i Vogel. The organization Partner for Children provided us with a list of fifteen families of the Gojan i Vogel village. The List consisted number of families, number of members in each family, their age and their sex. Having gathered and packed the clothes of UNYT students, we organized to go with two vans at Gojan i Vogel village. On the weekend of 11th December, thirteen members of UNYT Charity Club went to this village and distributed home by home 60 baskets of clothes to fifteen families. Even though people were poor and they were living in houses without even necessary conditions, they still asked us if we could go inside and

drink coffee or tea. Some of them waited for us with sweets in their hands. There were no paved roads, therefore we had to walk, with the baskets on our hands, and even pass the river in order to distribute our clothes to families in need. You could easily see children’s happy faces when they got their boxes with clothes and even toys. We left Tirana at 05:45 before sunrise and came back at 18:00 after sunset. This project was accomplished successfully and on the way back home we brought different feelings, those of happiness because we did something and those of sadness because we found out different and terrible reality outside Tirana. Our energy, our time and our contribution do not stop here. This is only the beginning. We immediately started the third project and we are in the process of getting donations from Kosovo Chamber of Advocates. UNYT Charity Club encourages every student, who has the desire to help and contribute to their community, to be member of UNYT Charity Club.

After successfully accomplishing its first project, the team of UNYT Charity Club got down to work for the next goal, a hope-giving project which we prefer to name

as Operation Santa Claus. This second project had in focus sick children suffering from cancer and leukemia and its aim was to provide as much relief to these kids as we could. We went to Qendra Spitalore Universitare “Nene Tereza” Tirane where sick children were hospitalized first to see how their conditions were and second to try to understand how our contribution could help them. It was December and holidays were near, but most of those children would spend Christmas and New Year in the hospital and their

families also. They were in constant need of getting their medications. Their lives were confined within those tiny hospital rooms in the perpetual struggle between life and death. Operation Santa Claus had as a core aim providing hope and joy to the sick children exactly when every child needs it: Christmas Time. First, we invited one the doctor working there, Dr. Donjeta Bali in an open forum with the UNYT students.

Such forums are part of our “raising awareness” program since for us as Charity Club it is important not only to act, but also to inform and educate other people. Doctor Bali first provided a professional background on the causes and effects of diseases such as cancer, leukemia or other malign diseases to children aging from 2 to 12 years old. Actually, the doctor agreed that people are not fully informed, often even misinformed, on the statistics of children in Albania being sick, on the level their needs for medications and special treatments were covered by the hospital and also on the necessity to provide an holistic cure for such complex disease in such a young age.

Doctor Bali explained that the cost of the cure for those children is too high, reaching up to $60,000 per year per child suffering from a malign disease. Most of those medicines are subsidized by the State, but others are not and most of the times the family has to pay lots of money for

buying vital medicines to complete the cure. Many of the families were very poor and they probably could not afford to spend large amounts on money. The idea that many of those children might not be provided with their medicine because of money was quite shocking to all of us. Something had to be done. We decided to hold a creative fundraising strategy in order to buy those children some of the medicines they needed and in this way we could alleviate somehow the financial burden of their families. UNYT Charity Lottery resulted quite successful. Students bought the lottery tickets costing 200 leke as a way of expressing their solidarity in this noble and humane mission. With the raised funds, we bought most of the chemotherapy antibiotics needed (as prescribed by Dr. Bali). Approximately 50,000 leke was spent on medication. The funds were modest of course, but nevertheless the medicines that were bought probably would provide some financial release to the families, at least for few days, and would also contribute in improving those children’s health. However, the medicines were not the only things we bought. Operation Santa Claus had to include gifts, books, sweets, colored pencils, all wrapped within the Christmas socks. On the 22nd of December, UNYT Charity Club was ready to visit the kids. That day was special for all of us being present there. We would never forget the smiles on those pale faces when opening their gifts all wrapped in colors. Although linked to the serums and other injections, they were like all the other healthy children: curios, impatient to know what’s inside the package and joyous. Any disease is as much physical as psychological as well. Providing hope to those unfortunate children is the best medicine one can buy. Our initiative will not end there for sure. Other projects will be designed in order to help and support sick children in Albania. After we gave the medicines to Dr. Anila Godo, the general director of the oncologic hospital and after visiting all the children and distributing them all the gifts, we all left the hospital in silent, full of thoughts and concerns about the fate of those children. Definitely it is an experience you never forget.

UNYTFund Raising

This end of the year like every Christmas the students of UNYT

continued now a tradition of donating

presents to the children who suffer

from Thalassemia and other blood

diseases located in one of the main

hospitals in Tirana. Personally I am very

happy that I had the support of the

students and the administration of the

university to make this fund raising

possible.

This event is my favorite

because it is the great magic of these

holidays to be able to share happiness

and joy with those who cannot

celebrate. It is such a wonderful feeling

to look at those cute little faces when

you hand their gift and they see you

as you are Santa Claus. I cannot help

but think about the moment when I

approached a kid, wished him Merry

Christmas and gave him a toy. He

looked at me while his eyes were wide

open and gave me the candy he was

about to eat. Although his face was

pale and he was almost unable to talk,

I could tell the glow that covered his

face. Then, we started playing together

with the small car-toy. In that moment I

forgot where I was, neither did he think

of his pain or his disease because it was

Christmas and he felt like the happiest

kid in the world.

Living in a world where peace and harmony “dominate”, makes me think about the limitations that our society have. So, since we are strict and limited where is this peace and harmony, promised by the leaders? Knowing that peace, freedom, liberty and harmony were promised because human beings have faced bloody wars before and they don’t want to face them again, makes me think that still something is missing. By looking around I don’t see that a big change happened; only the shape and color changed not the core. Are we blind that we cannot see actual things happening in the world, or we see them and we are not able to do anything. When someone is not able to do anything this means that his power and will are taken away and given to someone. Why we have to give our power to someone that do not cares about peace and liberty but only cares about money and development. Analyzing the history we can clearly see how and why the big revolutions started, how and why the new countries were discovered, how and why bloody wars happened. To answer this question it is not a need to be an intellectual or a well read person. The answer is simple “Money”. Maybe we are thinking wrong, and our leaders think right by trying to provide us peace and harmony

Are we considered

as modern slaves?

Page 14: UNYT Januar Newsletter

starting by developing the economy. If it is like this than it is not a big problem, but when the case is to develop the economy we know that in a market you have to exchange something. Here they do the greatest mistake by not being able to ask for material and give material, but they ask for material and give our liberty. How they can give our liberty in exchange with goods and services? Again the answer is simple, Money, because a foreign capitalist does not care about your liberty and harmony if you are manifesting something in his capital (factory, land, mines) and he can do anything he wants in it if you are part of it or not. So is capitalism bad? I think not, since it expresses the greatest freedom of an owner on his land and on his labor force. Where is the mistake than? I think the problem stands at us, because we are acting and behaving according to money and we aim the top directly not gradually. The bad management of money and laziness makes us to give our power to someone that knew how to manage the money and knew how to rich the top. Then are we considered as modern slaves? I think not, because we have somehow a support of syndicates and law, also we are able to collect capital and spend it as we want. Somehow in this case we become capitalists because we spend and do anything what we want with our capital. The right

question to be ask is “are capitalist considered as a modern feudal” than the answer is yes. Here the great contradiction happened and we don’t have slavery but we have feudalism. The situation is not that there is no “slavery”, but we can’t call slave a person who has judicial rights and freedom of speech. People try to grow stronger by accumulating capital and surpass their owner’s capital, which is very possible in a democratic society. So, they compete with each other to grow stronger, and when the competition occur in a society, people became blind and don’t act, because if they act they lose time and some other competitor surpasses them.sfdfdf

Dogville is a drama

written and directed by Lars

Von Trier, a Danish film director

and screenwriter. Eventhough

it has been highly criticized for

the anti American message it

portrayed, Quentin Tarantino

named Dogville as one of his

top 20 films that have been

made since the time he started

his career. I decided to write

about Dogville, as it is the kind

of movie that cannot be easily

forgotten especially for the

unreasonable social behavior

of “pathetical” human beings.

Dogville represents the

manifestation of a distorted

reality, showing the mysterious

nature of characters that are

living in a vicious circle. Their

psychical dimension and the

limited area in which they live

are the basis of that mythical

universe. The imaginary

city of Dogville presents a

society style which cannot be

compared with current places.

It’s style might rely to cities

like Eternal Rome and on the

other hand It could also falsify

the nature of people living in a

close minded, restricted form

of society. The city is only a

soundstage which through

Von Trier’s mobile camera

reminds us of 30’s films and the

unhandy new technology that

made the work about location

difficult to be processed.

‘’Dogville’’ has been highly

criticized for its violence and

the anti-American attitude

it portrayed. Tarja Laine,

a very well known movie

writer claims that the main

character, Grace offers us the

largest sufferance a woman

could feel. The performance

of Nicole Kidman is absolutely

astonishing to the critics,

which is mostly noted for her

manner in adapting entirely

to the director’s view. Grace’s

suffering body portrays the

moral and social breakdown

of Dogville. Her entrance in

the first scene is associated

with lightning change, which

symbolizes a different level of

perception and knowledge.

The female myth in the

cinema is analyzed from the

sexual aspect by the kind of

sensation she provides to the

audience, mostly to the male

figure. After she accomplishes

this mission her role vanishes.

The message she gives is the

temptation, which turns her

into a lustful object. Regarding

to her function in relation with

herself, dreams wishes and the

ability to give you more than

just causing a visual pleasure,

she remains a passive figure

that only gives but doesn’t

give anything as an exchange.

Grace accepts to turn herself

into an experiment of this

society, being unable to

refuse or oppose because she

doesn’t want to relieve again

her previous life. Grace is seen

as a manipulated object being

used gradually. The treatment

of human being in the most

discriminating way comes

as a result of this uncivilized

society who is ready to judge

people. Grace in order to be

accepted in the society must

offer her help in exchange.

THE IMPACT OF

TECHNOLOGY IN OUR LIFE

Technology today is a vital component of the society, is like the food and water for the

economy and for our daily life. The earlier methods of communicating through letters are replaced by mobile phones and by electronic mails or chats. The main feature of technology is that it grows very fast but in a manner that doesn’t impress us very much in our daily life. “All of the books in the world contain no more information than is broadcast as video in a single large American city in a single year. Not all bits have equal value.” Carl Sagan

Internet has all the possible kind of information. The physical libraries are being replaced with the online libraries and the amount of culture and information that you can get is infinite, it depends only on your will to study and read. Also having an internet access is becoming affordable for all the people and this is giving a greater chance to poor people to grow up. Computers are becoming very powerful and the new era of quantic computers is coming closer. Robots are used everywhere in the industry and many workers are left without a job. This evolution causes the evolution of all areas of science. Medical technology makes possible new discoveries which saves many lives. The question is: Will this bring to an overpopulation of the planet and is this a kind of challenging towards nature?

Well, nobody is not that smart to answer this question. Even the smarter answer would be relative because of the different opinions.

Internet is a very important and growing part of technology. Social networks that are networks in the internet have also changed lives and the way how humans see relationships. Day after day we hear about distance relationships or even about virtual relationships where the “partners” have never met each other. This has a positive aspect in the evolution of the “nerd” society which can hide themselves behind a computer and behave like anyone they want. On the other hand the “non nerd” society is deprived from the classical way of knowing the other

which brings to an increasing number of nerds. Military technology is also growing with the other branches of technology. New powerful weapons are invented. Atomic sophisticated bombs are built to protect different nations. This

is ironic because If only the Severstal Russian submarine would explode the entire population of the world would be extincted. As we see technology has many negative aspects together with its many positive ones and a balance is created between them. Every great thing has its negative parts. We hope that we are not going towards the robot

revolution as in Terminator :p.

The idea of exchange to what is being offered,

stays in the fact that we live in a materialistic society,

where the individual is being used and conditioned

to live his life by certain rules. Metz argues in the

“Imaginary signifier” that the doubly imaginary nature

of the cinematic signifier heightens the possibilities

of identification. In the same way, the images show

women that sacrifice everything to become part of

Dogville. She transmits a message that the narrative

is created in the basis of reality. Metz considers that

“the act of perception makes possible the existence

of identification”. The images in most of the cases are

shocking related to their signification, although visually

they show a state of immobility. Throughout the scenes

we observe Grace who accepts any kind of offense, and

represses her desires. Even in real life we are an object

of the society which represses our ideas continuously.

“Dogville is considered a masterpiece, as a

handheld camera is used to schematically show this

imaginary town”. A dreamer believes more than a

spectator who is watching a movie, as the movie is an

impression of reality and not an illusion like the one that

experiences a dreamer. Although there is a similarity

between a dream and the cinematic projection, as the

cinematic apparatus creates a hallucinatory view where

we experience the irregularity of images, based on

real issues of the society nowadays. In the same way,

at Dogville the narrative itself is the starting point of

our understanding about the problems and issues of

this society. The darkness and immobile images are

provided to make us enter in a typical dream, as those

that provides the Hollywood industry. This intensity

of the psychic processes shown at Dogville creates an

entire mechanism where people are shown as moving

and acting in a bizarre way. Even though many people

could conceptualize those images in various ways, they

always decode them as a sign of reality.

Entreprenuer 2Don’t hold back, when it comes to executing ideas the key is to get moving and keep on moving!

In this second part of a series of articles on entrepreneurship, the first part of the

“four part” formula will be discussed, the idea. It’s the first and foremost important part of this formula, because for most it’s the starting point and knowing where you’re starting from to where you want to be is like a roadmap dictating your path to the destination. Yet contrary to what most people would think, to have good ideas you don’t have to be either smart, talented or a genius. The importance of the environment and the points of view we develop come into play again, because it’s these two that guide us where to look. Many people saw objects fall from the sky but only one person questioned and researched the phenomena, Sir Isaac Newton. Think different, was Apple’s slogan and what it’s CEO believed in. Both these individuals inspired by a common fruit pursued paths which lead to ideas that changed the world. Yet changing the world is something that the entrepreneur doesn’t always aim to achieve, but coming up with new ideas, concepts and ways is something that truly excites the entrepreneurial mind Let’s suppose that we have an idea, a great one, one that was never thought of before. Then what? Like everything that is

great in size, an avalanche, a freight train, a giant wave, it needs momentum. Passing the initial eureka moment, the idea needs momentum and speed if it’s ever going to take flight. Momentum is important to an idea just as rhythm is to music, the moment a choir loses the rhythm everything falls through and you have to start from the beginning. When it comes to entrepreneurial work, momentum is very important, probably more important than the idea itself! Keeping our inner critic at bay and second guessing away is essential to keep building speed, because eventually as life itself has it, you are going to hit up hills and down hills. Thus its important to set clear cut goals, forget the success and fame, its only there to distract you, setting goals is what helps momentum unconsciously build up in your mind and spirit. Just like trying to learn a new musical instrument practicing every day makes perfect, the same concept applies to getting an idea from your mind, on paper and in the real world. Don’t hold back, when it comes to executing ideas the key is to get moving and keep on moving!
