AUGUST 2019
FROM THE EDITOR--------------------------------------------------- JIM - K8UHF [email protected]
I want to send out a BIG THANK YOU to all the Net controls and Pre-net controls. Without your dedication the
U.P. Net would not be what it is...in my opinion the friendliest group on the air.
Volunteers Needed
With that said it has been mentioned that it would nice to have a few more people take on the roll of Net control
and/or Pre-net control to give the the regulars a break. If you have time and are interested, contact any of the
Net controls and find out what you can do to help out.

Update on Jim, K8UHF, and Dawn’s Pole Barn
This is a follow up on our new Pole Barn. The barn construction is finished, and we are working on the
landscaping. So far, we have laid five yards of Ohio Lime Stone Small as it is called, by hand shovel and small
trailer. About 2”-3” deep around the barn and the balance in the drive area. We still need a few more yards in
the driveway. We also hand spread six yards of top soil around the barn and surrounding area to fill in tire
tracks left by the heavy equipment. We still have shutters to install and then the outside will be complete. Here
are a couple pictures to show it off.

SILENT KEY
Lyle F. Green – KE8BWM – Muskegon , MI
Lyle Green passed away unexpectedly at age 70 on July 15, 2019. His obituary can be seen at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/muskegon-mi/lyle-green-8780727.
Brad Hulce, KR8P, wrote the following: Lyle was a new Ham who quickly made new friends and helped many. He earned his Technician license in 2015. He was always making new friends with the local Hams with his willingness to always respond to anyone who jumped on the local repeater to chat. He purchased many different radios and quickly learned how to operate them. He was always studying and learning. You would hear him often helping others who purchased the same radio. He was the "go to guy" when you needed your new radio configured. The impact he had on others was evident when you attended his celebration of life. The room was full of local Ham Radio operators who became friends of Lyle since becoming a Ham and many in the room benefited from his help. In 2017 he earned his General class license and soon after started checking into the U.P. Net and enjoying the HF frequencies. He will be missed by many
NOT ALL USB CABLES ARE MADE THE SAME
By Jim Hein – K8UHF
Recently I was working with my DMR Radio Hotspot connected to a USB power cable and found something
very interesting.
All of the USB cables I have on hand will work to charge my phone, tablet, or charge backup battery pack.
Some cables charged these devices faster than others. Certain USB cables would power my Hotspot and other
cables would not. So, I decided to do a search on the internet to see if I could find out what was going on. After
doing some research I found out “not all USB cables are made the same”. Some cables will not carry enough
current to actually power a device like my Hot Spot that requires an amp or more to operate. The gauge of the
5volt power wires and the length of the USB cable determine how fast your device will charge and if you can
use the cable for a device that requires higher current. I found some of the cables available come with good
information about their capabilities and others cables have no information. The USB cables capacity range from
.5amp to 2.5amp or more. So, select the correct cable for your application.
Here is a link I found to be very informative.

AN INTERESTING IDEA
We would like to add a “ladies’ section” to the U.P. Net Newsletter. Here’s the idea: submit a short story about what your lady is doing while you’re playing radio. Include her picture, hobbies, other interests or activities, pets, etc. Is she a licensed Ham? Not required, but if so, make sure to include her call sign. You ladies who check into the U.P. Net, we want to hear from you, too! Please send your story to Jim, K8UHF, at [email protected] or mail it to him at 4833 N. Gunnell Rd., Dimondale, MI 48821.
