Shell Dynamics

The Site

The Tool

The Strategy

The following project is located in Tel Aviv Israel. The Project is broken up into 3 stages as shown on the following page. The Site component will be an introduction to the fundamentals of the project based on site conditions. The second phase of the project labeled tool is an architectural response to the site parameters. The conclusion, labeled the strategy will talk about how the tool is to be implemented on the chosen site and will contain renderings of the final proposition.

Shell Dynamics Tel Aviv, Israel

_project location

Tel Aviv. ..the White City Tel Aviv is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, comprises the world's largest concentration of the Modernist-style buildings. As degradation of these buildings over time has taken place, it is very expensive to regenerate these buildings, in an effort to regenerate these buildings, the government gives incentives by allowing extensive rezoning to surrounding buildings with the regeneration of a modern style building. The most noticeable location that is affected is the beach front which is being more and more isolated from the inner city by the high rise walls erupting along the coast.

Project Location

The Site

The site I have chosen is a waterfront site that has the possibility of linking the cities boardwalk and boulevard to the beach boardwalk.

The peroblem is that high rises are begining to chocke the site and if the oppertunity to develope this site into a community area is not taken, high rises will be implemented on the area.

The Structural Definition

The form of the tool is based on 3 main elements. 1. ) Dynamic structure to allow the collapse of the structure. 2..) Dynamic spacing to ouse te different activities listed on te previous page. 3.) wase of construction.

Ridgid Frame

_Below Grade

Figure one on the right shows a conceptual sketch of the preliminary idea of multiple conjoined shells. The idea was later developed to make the shells independant and self governing.

3. Ground Plane

2. Steel Structural Frame

4. Mechanical System

For ease of construction and maintenance, the shells are comprised of only 4 major elements which can be addressed separately incase of changes or repairs.

The tensional cover is used to separate the interior and exterior environments. Depending on what is inside the shell, the cover may be required to be perform certain activities with its material properties.

The structural frame provides the tensional cover with rigidity. The steel arcs are welded to a mechanical system which allows them to be lowered into the ground.

The structural frame that is to be lowered below grade is to be received by a below grade trench that stores the structure until it is to be erected once again.

The ground plane is the vessel that maintains the activity provided by the shell. As seen on the right, the ground floor is an auditorium space that can be filled with inhabitants based on the activities provided.

Small Activities Shell

Shell introduced on elevated structural members to provide dynamics to the typical one grade park setting.

Large shell to provide a lot of possible interior space for large scale functions such as expos, weddings ect. This type of shell can be customized by replacing the tensional member.

Basic small shell that can open and close to provide small scale spaces when required.

Experimentation Understanding the structural components now allows the generation of a multitude of infastructural shells that can house secluded enviroments from the rest of the park. The shells become unique in terms of the enviroment they house within and based on the options they can offer to the public.

Establishing the Architectural ToolConditions Based on Flexibility

The architectural tool is created through fulfilling the parameters setforth by the previously described design elements. Although the elements were derived from site specific conditions, the shells now have the possibility of being introduced to any location taken that a strategy of ordering them is well developed.
