to jump o anywhere and go onboard one o these cabin anywhere. The urbanites will pay the cabin op-erator as they see appropriate withtheir ‘stay’ in the cabin.

In the city, there are eets o cabinson wheels that roam the streets.Downhill, Uphill, Alun-Alun, they areeverywhere. These cabins seem to

TREASURE THREE

There is a constant oer o goodsand ood when walk along thestreets o the city. They push youon your nerves or make ease to ndsomething (depends). Ater a while, you might get annoyed and try to

avoid bumping into them.

They route you take will dier asyour path evolves into a much di-erent and longer route. This clearlyreects the hardship o lie o the

Bandung people which are simplystuck in an economical depression.

maneuver your car in and out o theparking spot. All drivers pay thesepeople a sum o money as a tokeno appreciation.

TREASURE TWO

There is always a pile or two un-wanted materials lying around the road in the city. Rubbish bins be-come an item o sustenance as thepoor search every bin in the city or

items that they can resell or reuse.

TREASURE ONE

Vehicular access in the city oBandung is very much dierent dueto the high density o trafc.

Due to this dense trafc network, all parking spaces within the citycome with the assistance o a tra-c coordinator. Weather you parkor reverse your vehicle, there will bea guy, either with a ormal jumpsuit

or just an everyday jack helping you

FINAL INCISION

THE CITY OFTWO CITIES

The deep block o urban grain inBandung is based upon a cluster

system o urban placement. A di-rect reection o social and eco-nomical hierarchy that can clearlybe seen in the scale and quality o

space.

The ormation o these clustersdate back to the Dutch planning

system that separates urban unc-tion. Commercial, Production, Ad-ministartion, etc.

The social and economical stratacomes hand in hand in the soci-

ety o Bandung. As the situation isheavily reected on the physicaldevelopment o the city. The citypossesses a clear demarcation otwo sub cities, that amalgamateinto one through a complex sym-biosis relationship. The city that

serves (villages) and the city that

is being served (city)

The ormation o the city o Band-ung dates back to the colonial ur-

ban planning. With reerence totheir own cities back home in Eu-rope, these cities are ormulated tomimic the working o the home cit-

ies o colonial power. Even thoughan urban plan was laid through, thecontinuation o the abric is heav-ily based upon local interpretation

and understanding o urban plan-ning. The continuation o the urbanabric is rather intuitive and spon-taneous inuenced by the pressureo living, local issues and economi-cal potentials.

Here in Bandung, the city is ratherragmented. It is not the naturalworking o the cities that somehowragmentized the city, but ratherthe ragmentation is designed insuch a way it is a means o control.Clustered.

Conclusion

When would the two cities nallyresolve its conicts? Or both citieswill continue to reside side by side

awkwardly?

What would happen to the evolu-tion o the villages in the uturewhen Bandung will become a majortourist attraction? With the city it-sel as a stage o its people, the at-

traction o Bandung will broaden,

not only limited to a discountedshopping experience and a volcan-ic mountain tour, but the city urbancondition will become worthy to be

experienced and be part o the ur-ban population. This new orm otourism product might be the cata-lyst that can bring Bandung or-ward and beyond graded trade.

During the colonial time, the villag-es has a Ducth master, now povertyreign the villages.

The villages lies in the belly o theeach city cluster . Thus compactionis unavoidable as population risesin the uture in the city. With therapid vertical development o thecity, the village is getting denser ata very ast rate. With an exceptional

population growth, both orms o

natural growth o oreign migration,Bandung has become very dense inmany parts o the cities, especiallyin the villages.

The uneven population distribu-tion in the city results in subpar liv-ing quality in the villages. With only9% open public space to serve theentire city, the population suersrom the lack o public interaction

and healthy social development.
