Keeping the Legacy Alive Part II Letrsquos call it the Katrina Marathon and the fi nish line is so close it is palpable to all the senses hellip the sight of construction trucks on Claiborne the smell of dirt being turned and moved about the foundation of the 1935 gymnasium the steady sound of pilings being driven into the earth the feel of a hard hat as we venture into the construction site and fi nally the imagined taste of hot popcorn in the bleachers as we think about that fi rst game on a spring afternoon on our new softball fi eld at the corner of State Street and Claiborne Avenue We invite you to accompany us at the end of this race More specifi cally we need you to support us over this last hurdle

Keeping the Legacy Alive Part I saved and restored our campus after Katrina it provided resources to secure excellence in teaching and established one of the most innovative early childhood learning centers in the country But the monumental task of restoration has one last facet the old State Street gym which will be a weaving together of blessed memories and the newest thinking in womenrsquos holistic health

In 1935 at the dedication of the building Dottie McCloskey (Sister Marie) fl oated across the new stage as she danced to the tune of ldquoThe Blue Danuberdquo Bootsie Rivet (Sister Teresita) gave one of her famous speeches and Edna Prenger (Sister Mary Margaret) proudly represented her classmates as Freshman Class President A decade later PE teachers Clayre Ahern and Pat Taylor took a vision of their principal Mother Marie McCloskey and made it a reality by creating another Ursuline fi rst Rally Night

CAMPAIGN FOR WELLNESS

Today the State Street gym will be reinvented while the bones and the heritage remain intact Central air and heat a practice gym to accommodate the needs of elementary and high school teams and an indoor running track circling and overlooking the gym fl oor are just the beginning There are three more elements that elevate this project from ordinary to revolutionary

1 A state-of-the-art fi tness and wellness addition will feature a classroom coachesrsquo offi ces an athletic conference room a multi-purpose room for dance and yoga a large weight room a cardio room and a training room

2 A new signature courtyard will enhance this activity center at the north end of the campus where girls can do homework or just visit The courtyard with its series of covered walkways will also connect the two gyms to the Early Childhood Learning Center eff ectively cloistering the Ursuline community for periods of the day

3 A regulation softball fi eld on the State StreetClaiborne Avenue corner will give our girls that special ldquohome fi eld advantagerdquo for the spring season games

Make no mistake about it This fi nal step marks more than the sum of its parts In addition to the obvious benefi ts to fi tness and health the new complex will facilitate programs that foster the comprehensive well-being of our girls as they prepare for their future journey in life after Ursuline a journey replete with complexities confusion joy fear change and yes service
