When I was a teenager and youth group leader, I always looked forward to weekend retreats held at area synagogues. Twice a year, a couple hundred high school students from across New England would descend on a congregation for a weekend of fun, social action, creative worship and learning. At each event, I spent time with old friends (who I didn’t see very often) and made new ones as well. Jewish youth group was a formative part of my high school years and helped shape my life and path.
My years in NFTY-Northeast (called NEFTY back then), and my wife Karen’s years in BBYO in the San Francisco Bay area, were among the most formative parts of our adolescence. There we learned how to become active and engaged Jewish teens committed to building a community for ourselves, and not just stepping into the communities in which our parents had raised us. We formed friendships and sacred community. We learned leadership skills which carried us through high school and college. Those important years also helped plant the seeds for what would become a lifetime of engagement and participation in Jewish community life.
When we came to Shir Ami, we had hoped to discover an active and vibrant youth group. We wanted our children to have the opportunity to experience the power of Jewish youth group just as we had when we were their age. The reality of what we found has exceeded our initial hopes and dreams.
We are proud to watch our son Erza continue to find his niche within SHAFTY and NFTY-PAR. It has taken him little time to become an active participant and leader, both locally and regionally. We look forward to Avi getting more involved as he gets older. He is planting the seeds by participating in Shir Ami’s J. Crew (for 7th and 8th graders) and some of the NFTY-PAR programs for middle school students.
Much of Jewish growth and engagement for teens takes place out of sight from parents. In our area, the teens are often spirited away to Camp Harlam for weekend retreats. But sometimes the retreats come to us, and this month we are proud and privileged to host NFTY-PAR’s WINSTY – a weekend retreat at a synagogue, similar to those I experienced as a teen, yet different enough to make it new and fresh.
During the Martin Luther King Jr. long holiday weekend, more
than 100 teens from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (and points in between) will descend upon Shir Ami for NFTY-PAR’s
signature Tikkun Olam/Justice event. They will spend most of the day filling the hallways, classrooms, and gathering spaces of the synagogue. They will spend the evening at the homes of our youth group members and other hosts willing and able to provide a place to
sleep and a couple of meals to a few boys or girls.
I am so grateful that, under the leadership of our incomparable youth director, Ferne Levy, and her dedicated SHAFTY Board led by president, Sophia Levy,
we are able to host WINSTY at Shir Ami this year. It is a great honor for our congregation. As one of the largest and strongest temple youth groups in the region, hosting WINSTY provides us with an opportunity to share Shir Ami and SHAFTY with the entire region.
Join us on Friday night, January 17, as leaders of SHAFTY and NFTY-PAR will help lead our Shabbat service. This will be a great opportunity to experience a taste of NFTY-PAR’s creative worship. Throughout the weekend, the teens will lead programs that they have created that address the tikkun olam/justice priorities of NFTY-PAR.
While WINSTY is for teens, we will also require some adult help throughout the weekend. We need volunteers to help with meals on Friday night, Saturday lunch and dinner. We also need donations of peanut-free snacks. Please contact Ferne Levy if you’d like to lend a helping hand. If you have a 9th-12th grader who is interested in participating, even if they aren’t active in SHAFTY, they are more than welcome to attend. You can contact Ferne at [email protected].
I am proud of our SHAFTY leadership for taking on the honor and responsibility of hosting and planning WINSTY. This experience will continue to shape and form their leadership today which will benefit us for generations to come.

FROM OUR SHIR AMI PRESIDENT
Happy 2020 everyone and a continuing sweet and healthy 5780!
Shir Ami has seen pretty significant change over the past couple of years. We updated our constitution and streamlined our governance structure. Our team has benefitted from the addition of thoughtful, passionate, caring, and creative clergy and staff members. We’ve also updated our mission and values: The Hub of Reform Judaism in Bucks County, focused on Spiritual Growth, Learning, Community Impact, and Social Life. The Board, staff and I are now planning the structures that we will build on this foundation by taking a critical look at our short- and long-term goals.
Let me share a bit about the process.
Last April and May we launched our Culture of Philanthropy task force. This team has been evaluating Shir Ami’s demographics, revenue, and practices to recommend actions for growth and sustainability. We’ve been hard at work in daylong retreats, brainstorming sessions, and strategy development meetings to prioritize goals in areas surrounding Membership, Annual Giving, and creating an Endowment Campaign (one of my 3, now 4, “E’s”!) The team will make recommendations to the Board in February, and the congregation will hear more after that.
During November’s meeting, the Board started a strategic planning and goal setting plan for 2021 thru 2023. (We’re thinking about 2023 already!) We temporarily deconstructed our Mission and Values into 10 basic elements to envision what progress and success would look like by 2021 and 2023, and each Board member shared their hopes for Shir Ami’s future. In small groups, we had lively, thoughtful
discussions clarifying Shir Ami’s goals and refining their impact for Shir Ami. Each Board member brought a diverse perspective to the sessions, which strengthened the goal definition and drove the focus and prioritization. Three small subgroups of the Board met to work on several of the basic elements and each group will recommend their top 2 to 3 goals for consideration. In January’s (certainly by February’s) meeting, the Board will finalize and approve our strategic Mission and Values-aligned goals for 2021 and 2023.
Completing this work now aligns our goals with the budget and calendar to achieve our congregation’s priorities and goals. Often, our planning discussions lead us to the questions “Who’s going to do this?” or “How are we going to do this?” The answers come from my 4th “E,” Everyone. Our members’ energy, creativity, expertise and teamwork will enable us to achieve and surpass our targets. Some goals fit naturally into one of our current committees: Finance, Governance, Philanthropy, Engagement, Education, Tikkun Olam and others. Some will be so new we’ll need to launch a task force or committee to achieve the goal. So, when a goal aligns with something that you
feel passionate about, please reach out if we haven’t already asked for your help.
I am really excited about this process! Together, we’re setting ambitious, some say audacious, goals for Shir Ami’s future.
Before closing, let’s highlight improvements we’ve identified and implemented already. Our weekly and weekend emails are easier to read on your smartphone thanks to Melanie Cutler, Stacey Cohen, and Ali Kramer. They’ve helped us sharpen our email image. Debbie Stevens recommended adding a “Request Pastoral Care” button, so we learn quickly when one of us is in need. We did. Phil Nordlinger and the team moved our financial system to ShulCloud. Now, account status is securely available 24/7. You can even update your personal information. I fixed a phone number 10 years out of date. This system works together with our soon-to-be-launched, up-to-date website. Our events, committees, and information will be easy to navigate and much more current! ShirDigital is coming!
I hope to see you around the Shul and around town! And hope to hear your thoughts and ideas. L’hitraot!

JRA Food Drive Volunteers As Shir Ami’s representative to the Jewish Relief Agency (JRA). I want to thank all our volunteers, both first timers and our regulars, who have been graciously supporting JRA this past year. My fellow congregants often ask me about our goals. JRA is a local non-profit organization that serves over 6,000 diverse low-income individuals, regardless of religious affiliation, across Greater Philadelphia by relieving hunger, improving lives, and strengthening our community.
One Sunday a month, volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities meet at JRA’s Northeast Philly warehouse to pack and then deliver boxes of nutritious kosher food to these low-income individuals and families. Each month, volunteers will pack 3,200 boxes, including fresh produce and toiletries for families in need. This equates to about 32,000 lbs that we pack and distribute every month. Yes, there is that much food insecurity in our own backyard!
Our volunteers are united by a commitment to helping those in need and strengthening our shared community. JRA nourishes body and soul. Help us by volunteering for this worthwhile cause.

As the holiday season comes to an end, it’s wonderful to reflect on all the fun the children had throughout the month of December. Every aspect of their learning was fun, productive and even yummy!
We started the month with a wonderful Shir Sprouts service and dinner. Our clergy did a great job acting out the story of Chanukah. The children honed their shopping skills as they shopped at our Preschool Committee secret shop for gifts for their families. They learned that it is a mitzvah to give to others and not just receive. Thank you so much to Sonia and Aimee for chairing this event, and to all our volunteers who helped set up, sell, and break down the secret shop.
As the month went on, everyone got very busy making their chanukiot. Wood, clay, beads, etc are just a few of the materials used. Our chanukiot teach us about the miracle of the oil and of the eight nights that we light it. Kol H’Kavod (great job) to our kindergarten children on their amazing productions of “Judah Who Always Said, No!” They are all naturals on the stage! Of course, it wouldn’t be a holiday without the yummy foods that we eat. Some classes made olive oil, others made edible chanukiot. The smell of latkes filled the hallways along with the beautiful voices of our children happily singing Chanukah tunes. Thank you to all our classroom parents for their hard work planning such wonderful Chanukah parties. Everyone seemed very content with all their special treats.
Our ELC Party was fantastic! We danced and ate the night away and had so much fun. The raffles were a big hit thanks to all those who donated items and the classroom parents who put them together.
Before the winter break, everyone enjoyed popcorn and watching a movie in pajamas. My favorite day of the year!
As we look ahead to January, our classes will focus on the winter season. I can’t wait to see what will pop up in the hallways. We will also be hosting our indergarten Open House and class visitations!
Keep an eye out for the ‘20-’21 school registration forms and reserve your spots early!

January Is a Time to Serve
As the weather gets colder, we often want to retreat inside our warm homes with a hot cup of coffee, tea or cocoa. But, the truth is there is no better time to get out and about than January, because it is during this month that we are ever more aware that there are those in need.
We are reminded of this truth as we remember the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King.
We are reminded of this truth when we think of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and countless other Jewish leaders who marched with Dr. King.
We are reminded of this when we see those sleeping on grates or spending time in coffee shops though they cannot afford a cup of coffee, trying to stay warm, even if for just a few minutes.
At Shir Ami Religious School, we are serving our community this January. Our teens will be spending time at Tree House Books in Philadelphia and Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. Our 3rd grade Family Program will allow families to engage in activities that make the world a better place. Our entire school will be engaging in a day of service on Sunday January 19th.
It may be cold outside, but we seek this month, and throughout the year, to bring warmth to our community and make the world the place we dream it to be. We hope you will join us, because, as Theodor Herzl said, ‘If you want it, it is not a dream.’

SHIR AMI | YOUTH GROUPS
Happy 2020! SHAFTY is excited that we can uphold the values of the mission statement... dedication, devotion and commitment to our Shir Ami family and beyond.
December was monumental as we celebrated our 20th Annual Chanukah Hop. The 3rd thru 6th grade dancing feet filled the room with laughter, fun and gifts. To commemorate such a milestone, all participants were given 2020 blinking glasses as a token of our appreciation. Once again, we donated dozens of toys to JAFCO (Jewish Adoption & Foster Care).
Our senior youth group continued the giving trend by partnering with local schools, neighborhoods and Shir Ami to donate arts and crafts to the children at CHOP. Later on this month for the MLK weekend, Shafty will host around 75 teens from all over the PA Region for our annual WINSTY community service weekend. Many projects benefitting our community will take place with the help of Men’s Club, WOSA, & our youth group families.
We are a compassionate society, and this has been a great school year to prove it!

Jewish Views of Reproductive Justice with Rabbi Eric Goldberg
Thursday, January 9 • 7:00-8:30pm
At the beginning of the Torah, one human being (Adam) was created. This idea has spawned many important teachings in Jewish tradition, not the least of which is that every human life is infinite value. But when does life begin? How do we determine the value of life should challenges arise during pregnancy? These questions, and many others, will be addressed and investigated through the use of sacred and rabbinic texts._________________________________________________

with Rabbi Chuck Briskin
Tribes of Israel: A Shared Homeland for a Divided People The Tribes of Israel is a video lecture series and discussion, created by the Shalom Hartman Institute, (www.hartman.org.il). This course confronts the challenge of creating a Jewish and democratic public space in the modern State of Israel -- a shared common space for a people divided along “tribal” affiliations: religious, ideological, national, and geographic. The Tribes of Israel begins a conversation to restructure the relationship between the collective and the individual tribes that comprise Israel. _________________________________________________
There will be nine iEngage classes throughout the year. Cost is $36 for materials.
Theater ClubThe new Broadway season is just beginning for 2020. This includes: “The Music Man” in New York on Sunday, December 6, 2020. The show stars Hugh Jackman, Sutton Foster, and Jefferson Mays. We actually were lucky to get a small amount of extremely good orchestra seats for $296 each. I am sold-out and I am keeping a waiting list.
We have orchestra seats for “Company” on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at 3:00pm in New York. They are $139 each and the stars Tony winners Katrina Lenk and Patti Lupone. They were also very difficult to get. Please let me know right away if you are interested in “Company” on Broadway.
I am trying to book more shows in New York and possibly Philadelphia for the Spring and Summer. Please let me know if any of you are interested in the new “Mrs. Doubtfire” musical on Broadway for the spring.
Our Shir Ami Theater Club is open to all congregants and their families and friends. We do not provide transportation to New York or Philadelphia, as most people prefer to take the train or drive. Theaters and the ticket agency do not issue refunds or even exchange tickets, so once bought, the ticket belongs to you. If there is a waiting list, I will try and help. I am a volunteer and welcome suggestions for shows either here in Philly, or in New York.

SUPPORT SHIR AMI
The Circle of Giving Fund enables Shir Ami to provide robust educational experiences for learners of all ages and meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth. It helps us to create a lasting impact on our community through Social Justice initiatives, and allows us to connect with each other through dynamic social activities. You can help sustain and grow Shir Ami by including the Circle of Giving fund as one of your tzedakah recipients this year. If you haven’t yet given, we hope you will join the Shir Ami Circle of Giving for the first time this year. If you are a past donor, we hope that you will consider increasing your gift by a level.
PARTICIPATE IN CIRCLE OF GIVING AND HELP US STRENGTHEN OUR CONGREGATION.
Be a Part of Circle of Giving
With increased participation, we aspire to raise an additional $140,000 in 2019-2020. To date, 87 families, 16 of whom are first time Circle donors, have donated over $98,000 towards our goal, and the average gift has increased 24% over last year. INFORMATION ABOUT ISRAEL
16
The World Zionist Congress Elections are coming soon, and our congregation’s votes are critical to maintaining a large Reform presence. The election is our chance to have the Reform Movement’s voice and priorities heard in Israel. It’s a powerful way to combat the discrimination the Reform Movement faces from the Israeli government.
Voting will take place from January 21 – March 11, 2020, and we will need to engage every single Reform Jew to vote for the Reform slate. In order to help the cause, our congregation needs to rally together and make voting a definite priority.
Here are a few ways you can help our cause before the voting period begins:
1) Set a reminder to vote on January 21st. This is your chance to have your voice heard in Israel!
2) Volunteer for our congregation’s election initiatives. Please contact Alan Sheinberg at [email protected] to get involved
and have your questions answered.
3) Post on your social media about the election using the campaign hashtag #VoteReformWZC.
4) Donate to the Union for Reform Judaism.
5) Spread the word! Encourage your family and friends to vote for the Reform Movement during this election.
Only by growing the strength of the Reform Movement’s voice in the World Zionist Election can we ultimately make progress on the
issues we care about: religious freedom, equality, pluralism and more. By working together, we can achieve amazing things.
Remember, your vote counts!
YOUR VOTE REALLY MATTERS
WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTION
WHYVOTE?
Your vote is the only democratic opportunity you have toinfluence Israeli society as we continue our efforts
towards equality, pluralism and tolerance.
Learn more about why voting in this election matters on arza.org.
#VoteReformWZC
Vote January 21 through March 11, 2020.

Around Our Shir Ami Community
On the anniversary (yahrzeit) of the death of your loved one, it is customary to light a candle in memory of that person. The yahrzeit candle burns for twenty-four hours serving as a sacred and somber symbol of your mourning while framing this period of remembrance (yizkor). Before lighting the can-dle, you may choose, on your own or with family and friends, to recall the everlasting gifts that your loved one left behind for you to cherish and protect.
As you prepare to light the candle, you may choose to recite this benediction to help you focus your attention and to create an intention for this solemn moment:
“Ner Adonai nishmat adam; The light of God shines in our soul.” (Proverbs 20:27)
[I/we] give thanks for the blessing of life, for companionship, and for memory.
Our tradition teaches us that we never lose those we love, for love is stronger than death. So [I/we] kindle this light now,
and as it burns, so may the memory of __________________continue to be an inspiration.
