Bahrain is all set to host its first Indian

wedding as part of a move to position the Kingdom as a ‘Prime  wedding  destination.’ This was disclosed by Sheikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa, CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), while addressing the Bahrain-Indian Business Forum yesterday.

Revealing further, he said that almost 1000 people are expected to arrive for the event, which will highlight Bahrain’s new identity ‘Island wedding’.

“With our new project

‘Island Wedding’, we are focusing on two countries - India and Saudi Arabia,” Dr Ali Hassan Follad, Advisor, BTEA told DT News.

Meanwhile, sources close to DT News revealed that Four Seasons Hotel in Bahrain Bay will host the wedding that will happen in April, last week.

The sources also confirmed that the wedding will be of Diya Mehta, daughter of a business tycoon Russell Mehta, the CEO of Rosy Blue and Ayush Jatia, son of another business tycoon Amit Jatia, MD of Hardcastle Restaurants (McDonald’s India Franchise).

The couples got engaged in a low-key affair on December 19 last year. The wedding,

however, is expected to be a big affair. The three-day extravaganza held from 26  to 28  of the April will have over 800 guests from India, Belgium, UK, USA and several other countries.

“The family has booked the entire hotel from 24th  to 29th  of April, with chefs and musicians to be flown from India,” another source at the Four Season Hotel told DT News.

Our source also confirmed that most of the wedding activities will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel and the majority of the guests will be put up there.

“But we were also told that half of the Ritz Carlton Hotel is booked too, to accommodate the rest of their guests,” the source said. Meanwhile, one of our sources at Ritz Carlton Bahrain confirmed that the family has booked 70 per cent of the Hotel and the first

function of the  wedding  is to happen at the Ritz Carlton.

The project, according to Dr Ali Hassan Follad, Advisor, BTEA, was launched exactly one year ago.

He also claimed that the

project is a huge success considering the speed with which Bahrain was able to host one of the biggest Indian weddings in the history of the Kingdom.

In this regard, he also pointed out that the wedding industry is of utmost importance to the Kingdom’s economy as it combines a slew of other sectors including gold and jewellery, hospitality, rent-a-cars, aviation, and clothing.

“What is so special about this wedding is that it is no more a client and a customer relationship, rather it is more about building  relations and it’s about friendship and loyalty,” he added.

are focusing on two countries - India and Saudi Arabia,” Dr Ali Hassan Follad

The case is referred to the public prosecutor for further action.

The incident happened on March 28 when Fichadia was waiting at the door of his jewellery opposite Jawad House when the gang-of-four attacked him and snatched the gold.

“I would like to thank Ministry of Interior for working really hard on the case. I did get a call from the officials saying that an arrest have been made but they haven’t found the gold yet,” said Fichadia.

In a bid to promote Taiwanese agricultural

products, an exhibition of fruits, vegetables and flowers of that country were held at Al Jazira Supermarket in Zinj yesterday.

The fruits and greens arrived from Taiwan’s Pingtung County which is the production base for farming, forestry, fishery and animal husbandry in Taiwan.

The event was aimed at promoting the county’s top quality agricultural products and open up a broader export channel to establish the possibility of long-term cooperation between the Taiwanese and Middle Eastern food markets.

“Taiwan’s world-class greens have been exhibited in Bahrain for the past five years in this esteemed supermarket. This year, we have Taiwan’s Pingtung County’s produces for the exhibition as it has often led to inquiries within the Middle East,” said Michael T. Chen, Representative of the Trade Mission of Taiwan in Bahrain.

“The Middle East highly appreciates Pingtung fruits and flowers. In 2016, Pingtung County’s pineapples, guavas, lemons, organic roses and bergamot juice were brought to the GCC and right after the promotional event, some Dubai-based traders travelled

all the way to Pingtung to place purchase orders in bulk,” he added, emphasising on Pingtung’s soil’s great potential.

Bahrain’s 2017 exhibition, which was also attended by Abdulhussain Khalil Dawani, Chairman of Al Jazira Group

and Pan Men-an, Pingtung’s Magistrate, included a tasting session of the county’s fresh guavas, dragon fruits, lemons, golden diamond pineapples and two types of high quality orchids – Oncidium or ‘Dancing Lady Orchids’ and Vanda.

Experts at the event also spoke about the uniqueness and nutritional values of Taiwanese fruits and flowers.

“While most of these fruits are found in different Asian regions, the ones from Taiwan are sweeter, rich in nutrients and health-benefits. As opposed to being white, the pinkish- red dragon fruits from Taiwan are filled with iron and fibres, making them extremely beneficial for anaemic and cholesterol-prone individuals,” said an expert.

Taiwan is home to a multi-billion-dollar fruit and vegetable industry with immense technological prowess in seeding, cultivation and ripening and has held multiple agricultural expos around the globe in the past year.

“Such events are a brilliant way to promote Taiwan’s large varieties of fruits and flowers while also letting the farmers understand their customers’ needs more clearly. Hopefully, soon the produce from Pingtung can be distributed to GCC’s member countries on larger scales,” said Pan Men-an, Pingtung’s Magistrate.

Turkey planning new opsin Iraq

Istanbul

Turkey is planning in the next weeks to launch

a new cross border military incursion to oust the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) from the Sinjar region of northern Iraq, a report said yesterday.

The report in the pro-government Yeni Safak daily was not immediately confirmed by Turkish officials but President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has over the last days indicated an operation in northern Iraq could be in the offing.

Turkey last week announced

it had completed its half-year Euphrates Shield operation in northern Syria against jihadists and Kurdish militia, although it is keeping a presence to maintain security in towns now under control of pro-Ankara Syrian rebels.

But Erdogan this week said Euphrates Shield was only a “first stage” and new military operations were being planned, including for Sinjar.

Yeni Safak said the new operation would begin in late April or May, after Turkey’s crucial April 16 referendum on expanding Erdogan’s powers.

It will be called Tigris Shield after the other great river in Mesopotamia, it added, and involve thousands of tanks, vehicles and artillery pieces used in the Syria operation.

Yeni Safak claimed the PKK had built up nine camps in the Sinjar region after moving in from 2014 to oust Islamic State (IS) jihadists who have massacred the area’s Yazidi residents.

It said the aim of the operation would be to cut off any contact between Sinjar and the Qandil mountain area in Iraq to the further north, where the PKK has its main

rear bases.The incursion would also

prevent cooperation between the PKK in Iraq and Kurdish militia in Syria that Ankara accuses of being the Syrian wing of the PKK.

A key base would be Bashiqa, outside the city of Mosul, where Turkey has maintained a military presence much to the annoyance of the Baghdad government.

Such an operation would risk raising tensions with Baghdad and also the United States, which has kept a wary eye on Turkey’s unilateral incursion into northern Syria. (AFP)

Wide Angle

“Is Truth Dead?”, asks the cover of TIME magazine dated 3 April 2017.

The story inside, however, does not deal with the philosophy of truth. It only calls Donald Trump a fact-challenged president who is delivering deliberate and strategic lies.

I was disappointed with the article because it was too Trump-centric and not as Truth-centric as I thought the cover promised. It seemed like a click-bait I fell for.

“Is God Dead?”, asked an earlier cover of TIME magazine dated 8 April 1966.

That was fifty one years ago. And it had then unleashed a furious debate not just in USA but across the world. The discussions were apparently more on the provocative nature of the cover, than on the issue’s investigation into  the relevance of God to the secular world of swinging sixties.

In fact, a century earlier, in 1882, the publication of German philosopher Nietzsche’s work ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’, and the popularization of its key phrase “God is dead” had already brought philosophers, theologians and social commentators into a war of words on it.

Nietzsche, of course, did not say that God is really dead, but implied that God is no longer a source of meaning, or moral compass, in contemporary world.

Therein lies the connection. If Truth is defined as a much-needed moral-value, and if God is defined as a source of our moral compass, the demise of the God will, obviously, result in the demise of Truth.

The font and colour TIME used on both covers, I discovered, were the same. And, while digging around the cyber space, I also found that in 2008, the ‘Los Angeles Times’ had listed the “Is God Dead?” issue among “10 magazine covers that shook the world”.

This new issue of TIME, I know, cannot shake our world. But one thing is sure. We cannot ignore the gravity of the question it asks: Is Truth Dead?

In today’s world, where politicians call media persons liars and where media persons call politicians liars, the average man is put in a quandary. Whom should he believe?

Today’s video cams and mobile phones can capture ‘truth’, and today’s satellite television and Internet can spread the truth quickly. Why then is ‘scepticism’ rising?

Today’s Internet search engines give us access to enormous amounts of information, and Today’s knowledge-bases can help us verify many things online. Why then is ‘distrust’ rising?

Is it the photoshoping of pictures? Doctoring of tapes? Morphing of videos?

Why are falsehoods masquerading as facts?  Have writers become unconscientious?

Is there no integrity in journalism, anymore? Are we not ‘seekers of truth’, anymore?

Or are we merely craving for distorted information which supports our biases and prejudices?

If we cut our eye-glasses reducing their scope, and if we tint them into shades that only comfort us, we shall only see what we wish to see. Not what is. As is. Not the “whole truth”.

When we can beckon knowledge to our computer screens, can’t we exercise the faculty of our mind, to reason and to infer? When we can seek truth, can we not give truth? The whole truth?

The writer of TIME’s article (of 3 April 2017)  ends with these ominous words: “.. I tried one more time to get Trump to answer a question about the risk to his reputation caused by false and ever changing utterances. Once again, he would not accept the premise. “Hey, look,” he said. “I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m President and you’re not.”

Sometimes we do not see the logical fallacy of circular arguments. But, if we want Truth to live, we must.

Turkey said yesterday the autopsies of three Syrians killed in an attack in rebel-held

northwestern Syria confirmed that chemical weapons had been used by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, state media reported.

“Autopsies were carried out on three of the bodies after they were brought from Idlib. The results of the autopsy confirms that chemical weapons were used,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said, quoted by state-run Anadolu news agency.

“This scientific investigation also confirms that Assad used chemical weapons,” Bozdag added, without giving further details.

Some 60 injured Syrians were brought to southern Turkey for medical treatment, Dogan news agency said on Thursday, but three of them died in hospital.

At least 86 people were killed early Tuesday in Khan Sheikhun and dozens more were being treated after they were found convulsing and foaming at the mouth.

Bozdag said autopsies were conducted with the “participation” of officials from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the southern province of Adana together with officials from Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

But WHO immediately countered Bozdag’s claims that it was involved in the postmortem, saying the organisation did not conduct autopsies, adding: “It is not our mandate.”

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said in Geneva that “a WHO person was there at the time of the autopsy but had no role in the autopsy or investigation”.

He also stressed that no samples or swabs had been taken by WHO despite claims by the Adana prosecutor that “examples” had been sent to the organisation and the OPCW.

In a statement, the prosecutor, quoted by Anadolu said: “For analysis, examples were taken and sent to (medical institutions). Separately, following requests from the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, examples were given (to them).”

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday slammed “unfounded accusations” over the “incident with chemical weapons” in Syria in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Kremlin said.

“There was an exchange of opinions over the incident with chemical weapons that took place in the Syrian province of Idlib on April 4,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

“Putin in particular underlined the unacceptability of making unfounded accusations against anyone before a thorough and impartial international investigation is carried out,” it said.

“That Russia is protecting this regime is utterly wrong. No-one can support a crime against humanity. If these attacks continue, then Astana will have lost all its sense. Can you have talks when chemical weapons” are being used?

Mevlut CavusogluTurkish Foreign Minister

I stress to you once again: the Syrian army has not, did not and will not use this kind of weapons -- not just against our own people, but even against the terrorists that attack our civilians with their mortar rounds. The first air raid conducted by the Syrian army was at 11:30 am (0830 GMT) on that day (Tuesday) and it attacked an arms depot belonging to Al-Nusra Front that contained chemical weapons,”

Walid MuallemSyria’s Foreign Minister

The factsWhat happened?Air strikes hit the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun on Tuesday morning, and residents reported finding entire families “dead in their beds”.Local medics said they had treated cases of suffoca-tion, convulsions, pinpoint pupils, and rapid pulses. The World Health Organisation and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said victims showed symptoms consistent with the possible use of a nerve agent, such as sarin.

US President Donald Trump warned that the “affront to humanity” would not go unanswered, as France pressed for a   UN Security Council resolution demand-ing an investigation. The draft resolution backs a probe by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and demands Syria provide infor-mation on its operations. Moscow, which has said a Syrian air strike hit a “terrorist warehouse” containing toxic materials, said that Western charges against Damascus over the “monstruous crime” were not based on “objec-tive materials or evidence”.

A Syrian child receives treatment at a small hospital in the town of Maaret al-Noman following a suspected toxic gas attack in Khan Sheikhun

Who was behind it?Syria’s opposition and jihadists have accused the government of carrying out the strike. But Syria’s army “categori-cally” denied the claims, saying it had never used chemical weapons “any time, anywhere, and will not do so in the future”.

What’s the secret of your success? What prompted the decision to go on your own?

I am a third generation hotelier from a family of entrepreneurs and therefore pursing a gap in the market was a natural step for me. I was keen to create a global hospitality brand with an Indian soul that resonated with the modern-day traveller. Aiana is about being authentic, intuitive and engaging, driven by an Indian service ethos. Aiana is my dream project, brought to life through my partnership with H.E. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani, who shared my passion for extending legendary Indian hospitality to the world.

How did you become fascinated by hospitality industry?

I have been blessed to have hoteliers as parents (both attended the Hotel School at Cornell University) and therefore hospitality has always been a strong feature in my life. My grandfather was the face of The Leela brand and created a niche in luxury hospitality. Being a member of the Nair family, promoters of the Leela, my legacy and heritage remain a continual source of inspiration.

What role has Captain Nair played shaping your career?

My inspiration came from my grandfather Captain Krishnan Nair, founder of India’s Leela Group of hotels. He was a true risk taker who entered into the hotel business at the age of 65 despite several challenges. He encouraged all his grandchildren, irrespective of gender to join the family business and nurtured our interest in the hospitality industry by taking us to trade shows such as ITB Berlin and WTM London from a young age. I had the fortunate opportunity to work alongside him for five years and witness his energy and passion for creation. I believe I have inherited his appetite for risk as an entrepreneur and was inspired by his vision for India.

What are your plans for Bahrain expansion? We recently participated in a roundtable

session called ‘Uncovering Bahrain’ presented by the Economic Development Board, which highlighted the Kingdom’s thriving hospitality sector, infrastructure investment programmes and its economic value proposition. With increased demand from regional and international travellers, Bahrain’s tourism market is to grow at a rate of 4.8 per cent, reaching $1 billion by 2020.  Hotels and restaurants were the fastest-growing sector in the Kingdom for the past two years. Additionally, investment in supporting infrastructures such as airport expansion, ground transportation and retail gives us confidence that our goals will be met. Bahrain has always been perceived as an inclusive society with a rich trading history, creating its appeal as a tourism destination. Aiana, as an Indian-inspired hotel brand would add to the diversity of hotel offerings in Bahrain. We believe there is room for growth in the upper upscale, 4-star category for serviced apartments catering to the business traveller and resort offerings in the newly developed leisure destinations.

Entrepreneurship is about the ability to take risks. How far is this true in your own experience?

I have worked varied hospitality fields across the globe - New York, South East Asia, India and now Qatar – and starting up a company in the Middle East has been a rewarding learning experience. My greatest strength has always been to never let go of an opportunity and my success so far has been in identifying a gap in the lifestyle hotels space. By aiming for steady growth and

introducing the company incrementally we have been able to overcome the challenges of setting up a new brand. I believe that entrepreneurship is all about opportunity, timing, the ability to take risks and most importantly surrounding oneself with the right people.

How is Aiana going to stand out?‘Aiana’ means eternal blossom in Sanskrit. It

is also a place of refuge or retreat. Those two powerful images have been our inspiration and we have blended them to create a unique vision at Aiana Hotels and Resorts.  Our service culture, in tune with the needs of today’s  travellers, is underpinned by our intuitive and unobtrusive Indian service ethic. Aiana will cater to the upper-upscale category of hotels with fresh product designs complemented with experiential concepts. Our Indian service ethos is warm, welcoming and engaging. The USP of the Aiana brand lies in our authentic service, design, and operating philosophy which is geared to exceed the expectations of a new generation of savvy travellers and explorers.

How far have you succeeded in redefining hospitality?

Since 2015, Aiana has made great strides in building both our portfolio and our brand. We currently have eight management contracts and over 1,000 rooms under construction across the Middle East and India. Since the announcement of our flagship property, Aiana Residences and Suites in Doha, we are currently gearing up to open our very first property in Saudi Arabia – Aiana Makkah. The other major deal-signing announcements in India include a management agreement with Moonriver Resorts to operate Aiana Munnar and an agreement with Ferns Estates and Developers to manage and operate four resorts in Karnataka over the next five years. The first resort AIANA Hassan with 75 villas is currently under development on 45 acres of hilly coffee plantation land in the district of Sakleshpur. We also have an agreement to build a 150 room AIANA Agra within walking distance of the historic Taj Mahal in India.

How will you compete and get the return for your investment?

We call it ‘Hospitality 2.0’. Every aspect of the brand – from its intuitive service and locally inspired design to its engaging operating philosophy is geared to exceed expectations of today’s travellers. I was fortunate to meet a partner in H.E. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani who supported my dreams of creating an Indian brand with a global presence.  Our vision is to be a globally respected hospitality brand that embodies the best of Indian culture as a leading operator of properties in South Asia and the Middle East.

How do you exemplify women power?Developing a sense of purpose is a constructive

way in which women in leadership positions can address gender biases, seize the opportunity to enhance their careers and improve organisational performance. Being the CEO of Aiana has taught me to have self-belief, as if you are convinced, the universe will rally behind you to help you succeed.

Encouraging diversity in the workplace by inspiring women to take on leadership roles through formal development, training and mentoring programs is an important part of every CEO’s agenda, but in order to make that shift more meaningful and all-encompassing, it is the smaller, more gradual actions that truly make a difference.

Arunita Praharaj/[email protected] Amruda Nair, the Joint Managing Director and CEO of Aiana Hotels & Resorts visited Bahrain recently. Being a member of the promoters of India’s Leela Group, Amruda embraces an entrepreneurial spirit and business flair, inherited from her grandfather, the late Captain C P Krishnan Nair. Aiana is her dream project, brought to life through her partnership with H.E. Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani. During her stay in the Kingdom, DT News got a chance to catch up with her to chat about brand Aiana, her plans for Bahrain and more. Read on to find out what she had to say…

‘Twitter Lite’ is here!Washington

Twitter yesterday unveiled a low-data usage version of

the social network, which aims to bring in users in emerging markets and areas with slow or expensive mobile networks.

The California group unveiled Twitter Lite, “making Twitter more accessible to millions of people,” said product manager Patrick Traughber.

“Twitter Lite is a great way for many people in emerging markets across Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa to experience Twitter for the first time on their mobile devices.”

Traughber said the new mobile service can be accessed

via web browser, and offers quick loading on slower connections, while taking little space on mobile phones.

The move comes with Twitter struggling to boost user growth.

At the end of 2016, Twitter had some 319 million monthly active users, up just four percent from a year earlier.

Twitter made a push for users in India with the launch of the new service and a partnership with Vodafone at the start of the T20 cricket season.

“We are thrilled to partner with Vodafone in India to provide live cricket updates via a specially curated Twitter timeline to their smartphone

customers as the T20 cricket season kicks off,” said Twitter’s Arvinder Gujral in a blog post.

Actress Natalie Portman has been

spotted with her newborn baby for the first time since she gave birth in February. The ‘Jackie’ actress was pictured stepping out with her baby girl, Amalia, in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz area.

In some pictures, Natalie was seen keeping her new bundle of joy close to her chest with a black material carrier as she took her to popular walker spot Griffith Park. The 35-year-old Israeli-born actress left the stroller at home and carried the baby girl in the sling due to the park’s walking trails having a steep gradient.

Natalie gave birth to Amalia on February 22, just days before the Academy Awards. (TOI)

You may feel a tendency to do things the same old way today simply because it’s what feels most comfortable. Even though the familiar route may be tempting now, it’s actually better if you seek a different way to go. Things may feel chaotic, especially in the morning and early afternoon. Still, don’t automatically resist things that are new and different. An extra log has been thrown on your fire today, so don’t be surprised if you burn especially hot. Use your internal furnace to make some breakthroughs and bring matters to a higher level. Turn up the intensity on certain issues that require more life. You will bring a great deal of positive energy to just about everything you touch, so use it wisely.Don’t feel like you have to rationalize everything. Accept the fact that there are some things in life that occur without a specific logical explanation. More than likely these are the most interesting events and experiences that add the most spice to your routine existence. Embrace the unknown and encourage more spontaneity and playfulness in your world.

In order to reach your destination, you may have to take an unusual route today. Zigzag your way to the finish line. Don’t automatically assume that this is a bad thing. You may find that this is the preferred path. You’re likely to experience many side adventures and make some discoveries. Try to remember how you got there so you can find these spots again.

Get out of the doldrums and enjoy life. The situation is such that if you remain stagnant for a little while, you will soon sink into a spiral of depression and downward thinking. If you stay afloat and focused on your dreams, you will remain active in your pursuit of all your life’s goals. You will have the power of the Universe behind you, supporting you all the way.

This morning is your time to shine. You should be in a good mood, with a positive outlook that helps you attack the day’s tasks with vitality. Elements of the unexpected may pop up and remind you that things don’t always go according to plan. This should be fine, however. You will find that your easygoing approach to life will come in handy when the scheduled route doesn’t work.

You may get a bit frustrated in the morning because of a lack of commitment on the part of others. You may find it hard to pin down an answer when everything seems to be up in the air. The good news is that things should run much more smoothly by this evening and well into tonight. Note a major boost in emotional self-confidence now. After dark is definitely your time to shine.

The energy you put out today will most definitely fuel the fire, so make sure you have an extinguisher within reach. There’s a spark of excitement in the air indicating that something new and different is coming around the bend. You may feel anxiety building up. Be patient and you will find that good things naturally come your way.

You might find your energy comes in strong, erratic bursts today. Don’t be surprised if you’re high as a kite one moment and down in the dumps the next. Even if you’re driving everyone crazy with your yo-yo behaviour, don’t let this stop you from keeping on in this fashion. You’re probably able to keep very good track of the dozens of things going on around you.

You may feel indecisive today, especially in the morning. Other people’s actions may confuse you. Don’t worry. Concentrate on your projects and goals. Other people can take care of themselves. Don’t feel like you need to make sure everyone is attended to before you start your day. In fact, you may be the one who needs to be cared for by others.

Emotionally, you should be feeling quite good today. This is important since you may get thrown off balance by a strange, unexpected force. The more stable you are on the inside, the less disruption this foreign energy will cause. Keep in mind that unexpected things usually happen for a reason. There might be a key opportunity waiting for you now.

Free your mind and consider alternative options. This is a time to throw away the old to make room for the new. There’s a distinct advance in original and forward thinking today. EU parliament backs visa-free travel for Ukrainians

There were 92 children among the 301 people killed in the giant mudslide that slammed the southern Colombian town of Mocoa last week.

Russian investigators raided acquaintances of the sus-pected Saint Petersburg metro bomber, as the jittery city laid to rest the first of the 13 victims killed in the attack.

The European Parliament approved visa-free travel for Ukrainians in the EU, meaning this will likely hap-pen from June.

Bangkok

Thailand’s king signed a new military-backed

constitution yesterday that strengthens the army’s hand in government and puts the country on the path to polls after three years of junta rule.

The military says the charter -- Thailand’s twentieth since 1932 -- will curb unrest in the politically-split kingdom and keep out corrupt lawmakers.

But opponents say the new document means any polls, whose date keeps slipping, will only offer Thais a form of neutered democracy with a fully appointed senate and tough controls

on elected politicians. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who ascended the throne following the October death of his revered father, signed the document in a televised ceremony in Bangkok on Thursday afternoon.

“This constitution aims to fully rid the country of corruption, abuses of power and prevent corrupt politicians from taking office,” the official read with junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha by his side.

Vajiralongkorn surprised many earlier this year by ordering rewrites to parts of the constitution that deal with his powers.

China’s Peking University is buying a 19th-century

manor house near Oxford in southeast England to use as a campus in a multi-million dollar deal, the estate agent handling the deal said yesterday.

Foxcombe Hall, which has a vaulted banqueting hall, Italian style gardens and a lake, is to become a branch of Peking University’s HSBC Business School.

“I can confirm we’ve exchanged contracts with completion due next month,” said Jon Silversides, partner at estate agency Carter Jonas.

The price of the transaction has not been released but the estate was reportedly originally listed for £7 million ($8.7 million, 8.1 million euros).

“I can confirm that we’re regarding around that figure,” Silversides said, adding: “Their proposal, I believe, which has also been in the press, is for a business school”.

Spread over 6.17 hectares (15.25 acres), the campus centre piece is the original house, built in the 1890s, which also includes a tower and an original carriage drive.

Police said yesterday they have arrested three

people for murder over the death of a Muslim man attacked while transporting cows in India, in the latest incidence of violence over the animal Hindus revere.

Pehlu Khan, a 55-year-old farmer, died in hospital on Monday after around 200 vigilantes attacked trucks carrying cattle on a highway in Alwar in the western state of Rajasthan. Cow

slaughter is illegal in many Indian states, and vigilante squads that roam highways checking livestock trucks for animals being transported across state borders have proliferated since the  Hindu nationalist Bharatiya  Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. Police are still trying to identify most of the 200-strong mob who attacked Khan and injured six others as they transported dozens of cows into a neighbouring state.

Manila

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said

yesterday he has ordered troops to deploy on unoccupied South China Sea islands, boosting the military presence on remote reefs claimed by Manila in a move that could provoke rival claimants including Beijing.

“It looks like everybody is making a grab for the islands there, so we better live on those that are still vacant,” he told reporters during a televised visit to a military camp on the western island of Palawan, near the disputed Spratly group.

China asserts sovereignty over almost all of the resource-rich South China Sea despite rival claims from Southeast Asian neighbours and has rapidly built reefs

into artificial islands capable of hosting military planes.

Duterte has previously sought to improve his nation’s relations with Beijing by adopting a non-confrontational approach over their competing claims in the strategically vital waters.

But the president appeared to alter his tone with his announcement Thursday, saying it was time to “erect structures there and raise the Philippine flag”.

“I have ordered the armed forces to occupy all,” Duterte said.

“At least, let us get what is ours now and make a strong point there that it is ours,” he said, adding Manila was claiming “nine or 10” Spratly islands, reefs and cays.

The defence department

later said that nine outcrops “are already in our possession” and occupied by marines, including Thitu island where the Philippine military maintains an airstrip.

Its statement suggested that Duterte’s plan was to beef up contingents on the reefs.

“The president wants facilities built such as barracks for the men, water (desalination) and sewage disposal systems, power generators, light houses, and shelters for fishermen,” the defence department said.

After China occupied Mischief Reef in the mid-1990s, the Philippines marooned a decrepit navy vessel atop nearby Second Thomas Shoal to assert Manila’s territorial claim and has kept the rusting boat manned ever since. (AFP)

Dax

A French bishop resigned yesterday at the behest of

the Vatican over “inappropriate behaviour” towards youths, just weeks after complaints came to the attention of his diocese.

Herve Gaschignard, 57, bishop of the southwest diocese of Dax, tendered his resignation at the suggestion of the Vatican’s envoy to France, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, the French Catholic Church said in a statement.

A separate statement from the Dax diocese said the resignation was over the bishop’s behaviour with young people. “For several weeks in the Dax diocese, rumours persisted

over the bishop’s inappropriate pastoral behaviour,” the church statement said, adding that that they had been brought to the attention of church authorities.

Pope Francis accepted Gaschignard’s resignation, it

added. A spokesman for the diocese, Paul Perromat, said the resignation followed “possibly inappropriate comments and behaviour” by the bishop but that “it is in no case a question of sexual aggression or acts.”

Nairobi

Henry Eshiboko considers himself privileged. The

20-year-old lives with his wife and child in a single, windowless, nine square metre room.

The tin roof and walls are held firm by wooden beams so there are no leaks when it rains, there is a power socket and, a little way down the alley, a shared water tap.

“This is all thanks to football!” said the local club left winger and resident of Kibera, a huge slum in the heart of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

“With the 300 shillings ($2.9; 2.7 euros) I get for training, four times a week, I can feed my family and pay a part of the rent,” said Eshikobo.

Win bonuses are worth 10 times more. “With the match bonus, we can buy clothes, kitchen stuff and a few extra things. Right now, my wife is at the hairdresser!” he said, his face lighting up as it does whenever he speaks of football or family.

In Kibera, a labyrinth of uneven paths crisscrossed by rivers of sewage, Eshiboko’s life is akin to luxury: 80 percent of the population does not have access to electricity,

and many survive on less than a dollar a day.

Three back-to-back low league titles made the Black Stars -- Eshiboko’s team, not the Ghanaian national side of the same name -- into ghetto superstars and this year they play in Kenya’s national second division for the first time.

“Some of our matches are even on television,” said Eshiboko.

Winning games, winning supportBefore their rapid rise the team languished in lower divisions for years, but the club restructured and began to pay bonuses, said coach Godfrey Otieno, a former professional player who opted to remain in his native Kibera “to be able to give back to young people”.

“Before, it was common to have only six or seven players for training,” the 42-year-old said, pointing out that asking for four mornings a week as well as weekends without financial compensation “was difficult”.

“Now, everyone is here, and on time,” Otieno said.

For the players, football is a way to defy destiny.

“It’s not because we come

from Kibera that we can’t do anything, or that we cannot have ambitions,” said Eshiboko.

“When people talk about Kibera, they generally talk about crime, drugs, poverty. We have our issues, we’re not denying this, but with football, we prove that Kibera is more than that.”

For its fans, the team is a source of pride.

“We love the spirit of this team, it is people who come from Kibera who play and represent us,” said Bildad Ilondounga, an ardent Black Stars supporter.

“When we look at the field, we see our neighbours playing, and when the players look at the edge of the field, they see their neighbours.”

Adding to the club’s local popularity is the players’ willingness to donate food and clothes to families in need when they are able, while part of the Black Stars’ meagre budget goes to fund a slum kids’ team and buy them an after-training meal.

There are occasional perks for the players too.

“There are times when I take the bus, I don’t have to pay the fare because people say, ‘He is a Black Star!’,” laughed Eddy Odhiambo, a

21-year-old striker.

Smalltime, big dreamsBut success brings its own challenges.

Operating in the national second division the club now has to pay for long cross-country trips to away matches as well as renting a decent quality home pitch.

For years the club has been almost exclusively financed by a French teacher living in Nairobi who helped develop the Black Stars, but even with new sponsors there is not enough to cover this season’s budget, estimated at $70,000 (66,000 euros).

“The level is going up, and we would like to give contracts to players, like other National Super League teams do, but it’s not possible,” said Otieno, adding that the Black Stars was up against teams with far bigger budgets this year.

Under these difficult conditions adapting to the second division has been tough and despite their improvements the Black Stars have lost four of five matches so far this season.

“That means less money, it is hard,” said Eshiboko.

They are also struggling without their hardcore group

of about 4,000 fans who would gather when they played in the heart of Kibera in the past. The new, better quality pitch is a 1.80 euro bus ride away -- out of reach for most of Kibera’s football-loving residents.

Like smalltime players everywhere the teammates dream of the European leagues.

Eshiboko is learning French through a partnership with Nairobi’s branch of the Alliance Francaise, a French language and cultural institute, and has his eye on Ligue 1 team M o n a c o , w h i l e O d h i a m b o is less picky: he’d settle for “any club, in F r a n c e or in England”.

T h e i r coach shares this seemingly impossible dream. “If one or two players in the team can go to Europe to play football, we have achieved our goal,” said Otieno. (AFP)

Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar is

making his name on a pitch of a different kind -- hitting all the right notes in his singing debut.

The cricketing icon has released his first single “Cricket Wali Beat” (The Cricket Beat), with fans celebrating the musical breakthrough from “the voice of God”.

The music video, which premiered on the finale of India’s version of “American Idol”, shows the 43-year-old

cricket superstar singing the upbeat Hindi number in a recording studio.

The track was recorded with Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who praised Tendulkar for his singing prowess.

“He is a very good singer. We did not use a pitch corrector on his voice, as he was singing in the right tone,” Nigam was quoted as saying in local media reports.

His gushing fans agreed, sending the tune viral with more than two million views on

his official YouTube channel.“It’s been a pleasure to

have a song in god’s own voice #cricketwalibeat,” wrote Twitter user Jitendra Sen.

Tendulkar thanked his supporters for backing the song, in which he reels off his favourite shots over footage of him smashing runs for India.

“Thanks for all the love guys! #CricketWaliBeat got 1 Million views in less than 24 hrs. Keep it coming,” he posted on Twitter.

He follows a long line of

retired cricketers trying their hand at music.

West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo timed the release of his hit single “Champion” with the 2016 World Twenty20 tournament, which exploded  up the charts when the Caribbean side went on to win the trophy.

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton said yesterday

he relished the prospect of going “wheel-to-wheel” with his Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel, who has seized the early lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings.

Vettel’s convincing win in the season’s first race in

Australia has set the stage for a duel this year of two drivers with seven world titles between them, and which had Hamilton recalling his go-cart racing days.

The three-time champion Briton called go-carts “the best form of racing because it’s wheel-to-wheel all the way form start to finish”.

“I yearn for those kinds of battles. I’m dying for that day to come again and I hope that happens with me and Sebastian,” he said in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Ferrari’s win in Melbourne has thrown down the gauntlet for defending champions Mercedes, prompting

speculation that its string of three straight constructors’ titles could end this year.

“It fuels the fire even more,” Hamilton said of the Australian loss.

“We want to be the ones at the front and we’ve got a real fight on our hands. It makes you want to focus on all the weak spots more.” (AFP)

Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic made a solo break and clung

on for a nail-biting win on stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country yesterday.

Late in the 174km run from San Sebastien to Bilbao Roglic made a series of bids on a hilly section to shake off his rivals and clinch victory by just a two-second margin.

Australia’s Michael Matthews was second on the day heading up the chasing pack, while Spain’s David de la Cruz held the overall leader’s yellow jersey by a single second on Roglic.

Defending champion Alberto Contador both fell and suffered a puncture before fighting back into the field on a teammates’ bike.

“It’s going to be a tough night but at least we’re still in the race,” Contador said coming in at 1min 28sec but benefiting from the final kilometre fall amnesty.

The Spaniard sits just three seconds off the lead in 31st place with two stages remaining that can turn the Tour on its head.

On Friday, the 139.8km run from Bilbao to Eibar has six category climbs culminating in a summit finish, before Saturday’s deciding time-trial.

Formula 1 action at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC)

this year will not end when the chequered flag comes down on the 2017 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix as the circuit in Sakhir has been awarded the privilege of hosting the first of two in-season tests this Formula 1 season.

Testing will take place on April 18 and 19 at BIC, right after holding the Bahrain Grand Prix spectacle from April 14 to 16. There is another in-season test this year, scheduled for August 1 and 2.

According to FIA regulations, from 10 days before the start of the season to the end of the calendar year, the teams are permitted to take

part in two team tests of no more than two consecutive days at circuits where an event has just taken place. These tests must commence no less than 36 hours after the end of said event.

Silverstone was initially lined up to host the second in-season group test, as in 2016, but this has now been switched to the Hungaroring, on August 1 and 2, the final action before the sport’s summer break.

All 10 teams are expected to be at the tests at BIC, but it is still unknown who will be behind the wheel for each on both days.

Formula 1 teams are permitted to run one car during in-season running, while two of the four days must be allocated to drivers who have started fewer than

two Grands Prix. This is also according to

FIA rules, which state that two days of each in-season test must be allocated to young driver training. A young driver is classified as someone who has competed two or fewer Grands Prix.

The in-season test in Bahrain will also help assist Formula 1 tyre suppliers Pirelli with warm weather tyre development.

Tickets to this year’s Grand Prix spectacle continue to be available ranging BD150 to BD60 for the five grandstands and are valid for all three days of the race weekend.

They can be purchased at the BIC stands in Bahrain City Centre and Seef Mall, online at www.bahraingp.com or by calling the BIC Hotline on +973-17-450000.
