In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products?

• The opening, the female heroine is on her own, this is a common feature of Romance film, as typically the romance genre tends to focus on the female character in order to attract a greater female audience. Often, with the use of Male gaze, it attracts a male audience. The lack on a male character present makes it clear to the audience that the main focus of the film would be focused on the female, but the presence of the male, with the texts, make it evident that the film would be based on their situation and the problems which they now face. I did this to further enhance the patriarchal society that came to a end after second wave feminism in late 1960's..

• It could be argued that the balance of male and female challenges the convention of a romance film; it the textual analysis, female characters are present in the opening scenes, this however is a small minority of all of the romance films produced.

• The song 'All I Want' by Kodaline helps to promote this opening and film, the lyrics within the song accompany what is happening on screen and this is a common feature of the romantic films; some romance films, like in 'Bridget Jone's Diary', decide to use classically romantic songs;this, however, highlights that this production is a modern romance and this forebodes the inevitable challenging the conventions of typical romance films. As previously mentioned, I used this song because of the promotion it would bring from the film 'The fault in our stars', this creates a pre-audience for people who like the band. The use of non-digetic sound is used to demonstrate the isolation of the female character.

• The title cards are used to present the sensitive aspect of the film, the soft blur between the frames on show; this does however juxtapose the themes within this opening. I did this with the intent of highlighting the indecision which would continue throughout the film. In the textual analysis', I recognised that all of the stars names appeared on the screen as showed. I wanted to subvert this convention to show the differences in theme and generation. I also wanted to help break up the video to show the stages of the relationship and the problems which the couple would come to face throughout the film.
