Using Social Media for your Job Search
Presented by Jim BrochowskiColumbus Metropolitan Library
• Some wiser than others. • Some a little more familiar.
Many ways to find a job
When you decide you want to work for a company, you do some research
to learn more about them.
In 2010, companies do researchto learn more about you.
What happens when you Google your name? What are your results?
Create an active digital footprint.
• Digital Footprints are traces left by someone's activity in a digital environment, online for example. There are two main classifications for digital footprints, passive and active.
• A passive digital footprint is created when data is collected about an action without any client activation.
• Active digital footprints are created when personal data is
released deliberately by a user for the purpose of sharing information about oneself.
In the online world / community there is a buzz.
To help your career search,
you want that some of that buzz to be about you.
How do you accomplish this?
The Reality…Most positions are filled by referrals? Many times this happens before a position is even posted to a job board. How are YOU going to make yourself stand out?
Be Part of the Conversation
A lot under that umbrella.
Which paths do you choose?
Something traditional?
Seven years ago, this was my networking tool…
And this was my “public presence.”
Something was missing…
(Go ahead. Ask me about the goat.)
Engagement…
Relationships…
Show people who you are
Blog about yourself and your job search and search for others who are doing the same.
Build Relationships
Do keyword searches on Twitter to follow and be followed by…
Keep building your network…
Join LinkedIn groups for industry/geographic networking.
Recommend your colleagues.
They might reciprocate.
That’s Free Advertising!
Don’t forget to talk to your friends…
All of them…
How do you get a large number of friends?
Don’t be afraid to reach out…
Connect across multiple networks.
Engagement…
Relationships…
Remember…
Just one more - your Google profile
This is my current project.http://www.google.com/profiles/JimBrochowski
More? or Beyond the Big 3…
“Kind of” like LinkedIn
A mix of Facebook & LinkedIn?
Ask Yourself?
• How many places will you “log in?” • Me? 20 social media logins. • 46 functional logins.
Honestly, that’s too many…
Our digital footprint can definitely take us places, but remember this one thing…
You’re Always on!
Any Questions?
Thank you for your time.
