FIRST SERVE THE KENTUCKY MATCH ¢ Wednesday night’s match on ESPNU marks the 71st meeting in the storied Tennessee-Kentucky vol- leyball rivalry. Kentucky is the Lady Vols’ most-played opponent. ¢ The teams have faced off at least once every year since 1977. ¢ The Wildcats currently lead the series by a 41-29 margin in a series that has had its fair share of streaks. ¢ Kentucky won 31 of the first 40 meetings between the two programs, which included a 12-match win streak for the Wildcats. Tennessee followed by tak- ing 14 of the next 17 matchups, before UK rattled off five consecutive victories. Most recently, the Lady Vols have won six of the last seven meetings. ¢ In three of the last four seasons, a UT vs. UK match has had SEC title implications. In 2008, UT upset the Wildcats in five sets, dashing Big Blue Na- tion’s championship hopes at home. A year later, No. 10 Kentucky visited Knoxville with a chance to share the league title with LSU. UT went up 2-0, but UK fought back to force match point at 14-10 in the fifth set. The Lady Vols scored the next six points to shock the Wildcats, 16-14. ¢ After losing in five in Lexington in early October, the Orange & White captured its first outright SEC ti- tle on the last night of the regular season with a four- frame win over the Wildcats last season. ¢ This match marks the 29th meeting in Lexington, with UK currently leading the series 19-9 at home. ¢ There have been 10 five set matches played be- tween the two squads, including three of the last sev- en matchups. There has been 30 matches that needed four sets and 30 that ended in straight frames. ¢ With UT down 31-9 in the series, head coach Rob Patrick entered his first season at Rocky Top in 1997. Since, the 16-year leader of the Lady Vols has posted an impressive 20-10 mark against Kentucky. ¢ With this meeting marking the fourth straight year the teams have met on ESPNU, Tennessee cur- rently holds a 2-1 record against UK on the network. DEFENDING THE SEC TITLE ¢ Tennessee finished the 2011 campaign with a 19-1 record in the SEC, winning its first outright league title in program history and smashing its previous record of 16 league matches won in a season. With all start- ers returning, including the defending SEC Player and Freshman of the Year, the Lady Vols were voted by the league’s coaches to unanimously repeat as con- ference champions in 2012. ¢ The Lady Vols are seeking back-to-back SEC Championships, which they accomplished in 1981-82, and their seventh combined league title. In addition to 1981-82, and last season, UT won the 1984 and 2004 championship. The Orange & White also took home the 2004 SEC Tournament Title. ¢ Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last four seasons. Coach Patrick is 165-93 in his career in the SEC. In 13 of his 15 season, he’s led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the con- ference. 2012 RECORD 9-4, 2-2 SEC Current Rank: 25 Kills/Set: 14.3 Assists/Set: 13.5 Aces/Set: 1.0 Digs/Set: 14.8 Blocks/Set: 2.6 2012 RECORD 7-6, 1-2 SEC Current Rank: NR Kills/Set: 13.2 Assists/Set: 12.2 Aces/Set: 1.2 Digs/Set: 14.3 Blocks/Set: 2.6 THE MATCHUP #25 TENNESSEE KENTUCKY at THE BASICS STATISTICAL LEADERS INSIDE THE SERIES Overall: UK, 41-29 Knoxville: UT, 16-11 Lexington: UK, 19-9 Neutral: UK, 11-4 Streak: UT, W1 Last Meeting: UT, 3-1 (28- 30, 25-20, 30-28, 25-18) [Nov. 23, 2011] Previous: UK, 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, 13-15) [Oct. 12, 2011] KILLS #9 Kelsey Robinson (238 Ks, 4.86 K/Set) HITTING #11 Leslie Cikra (150 Ks-335 Att., .322) SETTING #15 Mary Pollmiller (555 Assts., 10.6 A/Set) SERVING #9 Kelsey Robinson (15 Aces, 0.31 SA/Set) DIGGING #10 Ellen Mullins (196 Digs, 3.77 D/Set) #9 Kelsey Robinson (190 Digs, 3.88 D/Set) BLOCKING #11 Leslie Cikra (34 Blks., 0.97 Blk/Set) KILLS #4 Ashley Frazier (159 Ks, 3.18 K/Set) HITTING #2 Alexandra Morgan (107 Ks-236 Att., .326) SETTING #32 Christine Hartmann (399 Assts., 10.50 A/Set) SERVING #1 Whitney Billings (17 Aces, 0.35 SA/Set) DIGGING #11 Stephanie Klefot (198 Digs, 3.96 D/Set) BLOCKING #2 Alexandra Morgan (55 Blks., 1.10 Blk/Set) #9 Sara Schwarzwalder (45 Blks., 0.94 Blk/Set) ON THE AIR TELEVISION ¢ ESPNU ¢ Adam Amin (Analyst) ¢ Maria Taylor (Analyst) ¢ Lya Vallat (Producer) ONLINE ¢ WatchESPN ¢ www.WatchESPN.COM LIVE STATS ¢ GameTracker ¢ UTSports.com FOLLOW US @LadyVol_VBall LIKE US Facebook.com/UTVolleyball SOCIAL MEDIA

17» Junior outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is 17 kills away from joining the 1,000-kill club. Cur-rently, 17 former Lady Vols have reached the mark.

7» With 45 assists against Ar-kansas on Friday, sophomore setter Mary Pollmiller became the seventh Lady Vol to surpass the 2,000-career assist plateau.

UT IN THE RANKINGS¢ For the third consecutive season, Tennessee

opened its campaign in the national rankings, as it came in at No. 15 in the AVCA Preseason Poll.¢ The preseason ranking was the ninth in program

history for the Lady Vols, who concluded 2011 rated as the 19th-best team in the nation.¢ On Aug. 27, the Lady Vols moved up one position

to No. 14 in the nation following wins over Cincinnati and then-No. 10 Iowa State. UT fell down two notches to No. 16 after posting a 2-1 mark at the Shocker Volleyball Classic.¢ The Big Orange went 3-0 at Maryland’s Spring-

Hill Suites Invitational with three sweeps, but dropped one spot to No. 17 in the AVCA Poll on Sept. 10.¢ After posting a 1-1 mark in week one of SEC play,

UT dropped four spots to No. 21 in the country and repeated the drop to No. 25 (9/24) following week two of conference action.¢ Dating back to last season, Tennessee has now

spent 16 consecutive polling periods in the AVCA’s national rankings¢ After entering the ranking at No. 24 on Nov. 30,

2009, the Lady Vols spent 19 consecutive polling pe-riods in the Top 25, until falling out for a four-week span last season.

» In program history, only four Lady Vols have reached both the 1,000-kill and 1,000-dig mark. Robinson needs 17 kills and 52 digs to become the fifth.

LADY VOL NOTESIN CASE YOU MISSED IT¢ The Lady Vols split their SEC matches for the sec-

ond consecutive week last week, losing to Arkansas and defeating South Carolina in four games.¢ On Friday against the Razorbacks, sophomore

Mary Pollmiller became the seventh Lady Vol to eclipse the 2,000-assist plateau with a 45-assist performance. As a rookie, she rewrote the UT record books and currently has 2,035-career helpers.¢ Tiffany Baker and Kelsey Robinson combined for

29 kills and Robinson recorded a double-double with 16 digs, but it wasn’t enough as the Hogs pulled off the win to snap a nine match losing streak to UT.¢ UT led the match in kills, assists and digs. UT has

had more kills and assists in every match this season.¢ On Sunday, the Big Orange rebounded to take

down the Gamecocks, who entered the match at 13-1, in four sets to extend its winning streak to eight matches against USC. Robinson tallied her third 20/20 match of the season with 21 kills and 22 digs. Pollmiller also notched a double-double in the win. ¢ Freshman setter Bianca Arellano added a career-

best 25 dimes in the match, while redshirt senior Kayla Jeter notched a season-best 12 kills and a .375 attacking clip.¢ UT outhit, outset, outdug and outblocked the

Gamecocks throughout the match.

POLLMILLER PASSES 2K¢ With her 36th assist of Friday night’s match,

Pollmiller became the seventh player in Tennessee history to cross the 2,000-assist mark for her career.¢ As a freshman, the Littleton, Colo., native set Ten-

nessee single season rally scoring records in total as-sists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94). Pollmiller led al NCAA freshmen in assists per set, while ranking fourth in the nation and first in the conference.¢ She was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year and an

AVCA Honorable Mention All-American. In addition, the rookie garnered AVCA All-South Region Fresh-man of the Year, SEC All-Freshman Team and AVCA All-South Region Team honors. ¢ The 5-foot-10 setter had a career-best 69 assists

at Ole Miss (Nov. 11) and tallied 64 assists in the SEC title clincher against Kentucky (Nov. 23) last season.¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 2,000-assist club:

20/20 VISION¢ On Sunday against South Carolina, Robinson re-

corded 21 kills and 22 digs, marking her third 20/20

match of the season and the fifth of her career. While it’s not an official stat, it’s certainly a rare feat in the UT record books.¢ Since 2001, six different players have reached the

20 mark in two statistical categories in a single match on just 14 occasions. In terms of just 20+ kills and digs, only three players, including Robinson, have done it. She’s the only player to have achieved that more than once. ¢ Below is a chart of UT’s 14 20/20 matches since 2001:

RECORD WATCH¢ Robinson recently eclipsed both the 900-kill and

900-dig marks for her career. She has 983 kills and 948 career digs entering the match and is eyeing some milestones. With 17 kills, she will become the 19th member of the Lady Vols 1,000-kill club and with

TENNESSEE ON THE TUBE¢ The Lady Vols will make a SEC high five TV ap-

pearances in the regular season in 2012. UT, which ap-peared on the network two weeks ago at Mizzou and again tonight vs. UK, will be on ESPNU a league-high three times. ¢ Tennessee also appearas on the Worldwide Lead-

er in Sport’s network at LSU (10/10). The Big Orange hosts Alabama (10/28) on Fox SportSouth and plays at Florida on Comcast/Cox on Nov. 4.¢ Since 2001, Tennessee has played nine matches

on ESPN networks and is 5-4 in those matches. Since 2009, UT is 12-4 in TV matches.¢ The Orange & White owns an overall record of 21-

19 in televised matches dating back to 2001.¢ ¢ With this meeting marking the fourth straight

year the teams have met on ESPNU, Tennessee cur-rently holds a 2-1 record against UK on the network.

11 STRAIGHT DOUBLE-DOUBLES¢ Robinson, the defending SEC Player of the Year,

currently leads the SEC with 11 double-doubles on the season. Robinson did not achieve the feat in the season opener against Florida State, but has reached double digits in two categories in her last 11 matches.¢ On Sunday, she posted 21 kills and 22 digs en

route to a four set win over South Carolina (9/23) to extend the double-double streak.¢ She tallied 14 kills and 16 digs against Arkansas

and 20 kills and 14 scoops at Alabama last week. She’s posted 20 or more kills and 14 or more digs in seven out of the last 10 matches for the Lady Vols¢ She now has 38 career double-doubles.

TENNESSEE vs. THE TOP 25¢ Through 13 matches, the Lady Vols have faced

three opponents ranked in the top 25 and two that were receiving votes in the poll. ¢ UT is 2-1 against teams in the top 25 this season

with wins over then-No. 10 Iowa State and then-No. 24 Colorado State. The Big Orange’s loss was against then-No. 12 Florida State in the season opener. The Lady Vols also lost to a BYU squad that is now ranked 11th in the weekly poll.¢ The Lady Vols’ two wins over ranked teams are

the only wins over non-conference opponents ranked in the top 25 for SEC teams.¢ Tennessee went 4-2 in matches against ranked

opponents in 2011, with a pair of wins over Florida (No. 6 & No. 13), a victory over No. 16 Kentucky and a win against No. 21 Dayton.¢ En route to its NCAA Regional Final appearance,

the Big Orange defeated a rally-scoring record six ranked teams in 2004. UT shared the SEC title and captured the SEC Tournament title that season.

52 digs she can become the 12th UT player to reach 1,000 career scoops.¢ When Robinson reaches both, she will join an

even more exclusive club, becoming one of just five Lady Vols in school history with both 1,000 career kills and 1,000 digs.¢ Mullins, the Lady Vols junior libero, currently sits

at 816 career digs, 184 shy of joining the 1,000-dig club. If Robinson reaches the club first, Mullins would be the 13th member. Last season, she finished with 471 digs. In 2012, she has scooped 196 balls through 13 matches. ¢ Below are charts mapping the current Lady Vol

TENNESSEE ON THE ROAD¢ After hosting its annual home tournament, the

Comcast Lady Vol Classic, from Aug. 24-25, the Lady Vols were road warriors. UT traveled to Wichita, Kan., and College Park, Md., for two regular season tour-naments and Columbia, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for week one of SEC play.¢ The Lady Vols returned home for the first time in

27 days last Friday when they hosted Arkansas.¢ Tennessee is 3-1 in true road matches this season,

with wins over Wichita State, Maryland and Alabama. UT also has three wins at a neutral location on the campaign.¢ In 2011, the Big Orange finished with a 14-3 re-

cord in matches away from Thompson-Boling Arena, including a 3-1 mark in a neutral location. ¢ Dating back through the 2008 campaign, the

Lady Vols are 41-16 in true road matches. UT is 68-39 in away matches dating back through the 2004 season.

KOLOSKY PUTS ON THE ROOF IN RETURN¢ After missing the Lady Vols first 10 matches due

to a hand injury, sophomore middle blocker Shealyn Kolosky returned to the lineup on Sunday, Sept. 16 at Alabama in a big way. ¢ The Wheaton, Ill., native rejected a match-high

eight ’Bama swings in the 3-1 win. She also added two kills and a career-high four digs. ¢ She posted 95 blocks as a rookie, including a

career-best 10 in the team’s NCAA Second Round matchup against Ohio State last season (12/2/11).

POLLMILLER TRIPLE-DOUBLE¢ With her 49-assist, 14-dig and 11-kill performance

against Wichita State (9/2), Pollmiller became just the second player in program history to record the rare triple-double.¢ Pollmiller and Ole Miss’ Amanda Philpot have the

league’s only triple-doubles this season. Philpot tal-lied 11 kills, 14 digs and 36 assists vs. Rice (9/7) and then added a 10-kill, 12-dig and 40-assist performance vs. rival Mississippi State (9/21) last week. ¢ Pollmiller is currently tied for fifth in the confer-

ence with four double-doubles.¢ Tennessee legend Nikki Fowler was the only other

UT player to achieve the triple-double for the Lady Vols. As a freshman, Fowler went for 19 kills, 19 assists and 18 digs at Ole Miss on Nov. 2, 2007. She finished her career (2007-10) with 1,649 kills, ranking fourth in the UT volleyball record books.

CIKRA NAMED PLAYER OF WEEK¢ Senior right side hitter Leslie Cikra earned her first

career weekly honor on Sept. 10, being tabbed the week’s SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The 6-foot-4 hitter was named the tournament MVP at Mary-land’s SpringHill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational.¢ Two days later, Cikra was one of three players

chosen nationally to the NCAA’s Players of the Week, marking UT’s first national weekly award since last season when Baker earned the College Volleyball Up-date honor on Nov. 1.¢ Playing in all nine sets, Cikra committed just two

errors on 56 attempts and tallied 42 kills for an amaz-ing .714 attacking percentage at the tournament. She averaged 5.11 points, 4.67 kills and 0.78 blocks.¢ She set a new career high with a .765 attacking

clip against George Washington (9/7), posting 13 kills on 17 attempts with no errors.¢ The Chagrin Falls, Ohio, native tallied 19 kills - just one

shy of her career best - on 26 attempts with only one er-rors for a .692 hitting percentage against Maryland.

RECORD BREAKING TOURNAMENT¢ After posting consecutive 2-1 weekends with no

sweeps to open the season at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Wichita State’s Shocker Classic, Tennessee put together a perfect 3-0 weekend with three shut-outs at the University of Maryland’s SpringHill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational.¢ The Orange & White opened the event with a

win over George Washington and returned to action against Boston College the next day. ¢ The Lady Vols played a historical match against

the Eagles, hitting .639 as a team to break a single-match record that stood for nearly 32 years. UT had 48 kills on 72 attacking attempts with only two errors - a rally scoring era best. Tennessee allowed just 38 points against, the second fewest in the rally scoring era.¢ The hitting percentage clip bested the previous

record of .607 that was set on Sept. 19, 1980 in a loss against Cal State Fullerton.¢ Tennessee didn’t slow down much in the tourna-

ment finale, defeating host Maryland in three frames to take home the tournament title. After beating the Terps 25-19 and 25-12 in the first two sets, respective-ly, UT fought off seven Maryland set points to prevail in an epic 36-34 third set.

ROBINSON, POLLMILLER ALL-TOURNEY¢ Tennessee volleyball co-captains Kelsey Robin-

son and Mary Pollmiller were named to the Spring-Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational all-tournament team. ¢ Robinson averaged 6.0 kills and 3.83 digs to go

with 1.17 blocks per set at the tournament. She had 18 kills against both Boston College and Maryland, while hitting a career-high .586 and notching a career-best four solo blocks against the Eagles. She also had a career-high five blocks against the Terrapins.¢ Pollmiller tallied 50 assists and six digs against

the Terps en route to finishing the event with 121 dimes, for a 13.4 assists per set average.

ROBINSON: TSWA PLAYER OF THE WEEK¢ Five weeks into the campaign and Robinson has

garnered a pair of weekly honors, as the Tennessee Sportswriters Association (TSWA) named her the inaugural winner of its player of the week award on Sept. 5.¢ Robinson, who was named SEC Offensive Player

of the Week after week one, led the Shocker Volley-ball Classic with 69 kills and is sitting on 11-consecu-tive double-doubles.¢ She was named SEC Player of the Week a league-

high five times last season. In 2010, she garnered SEC Freshman of the Week honors on two occasions.

SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK¢ Robinson was named the season’s first SEC Of-

fensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27 for her perfor-mance at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. She finished the tournament with 55 kills, 34 digs, 10 assists and five aces in 12 sets.¢ Robinson, who was named to the all-tournament

team, earned her sixth career weekly honor after lead-ing the league last season with five player of the week awards. ¢ Mullins also landed on the Comcast Lady Vol Clas-

sic All-Tournament Team. She finished the event with a team-high 42 digs.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS¢ The five-time SEC Champion Wildcats enter

Wednesday’s match with a 7-6 overall record and a 1-2 mark in league play. UK opened the season 3-0, but with a tough schedule, lost matches against Louisville, then-No. 17 Oregon, Oklahoma, then-No. 1Nebraska and then-No. 13 Florida.¢ After being blanked by Florida at home in the

opening week of conference action, Kentucky lost to LSU in five on Friday and beat league newcomer Texas A&M in five games on Sunday. Both matches were on the road.¢ UK has three sweeps on the season and is 2-1 in

five set matches.¢ Undoubtedly, the strength of the team is its size

and the defensive presence it displays at the net. Ken-tucky is averaging 2.61 blocks per set, good for second in the SEC and 37th in the nation.¢ Anchoring that defense is junior middle blocker

Alexandra Morgan. The 6-foot-1 player has a team-high 55 blocks on the year and ranks seventh in the conference with her 1.10 rejections per set average.¢ Also in the mix is freshman Sara Schwarzwalder,

who averages 0.94 blocks per game – a mark that ranks 10th in the SEC. She has 45 blocks on the cam-paign. UK also has two outside hitters in Ashley Fra-zier and Whitney Billings who have over 30 blocks.¢ On the offensive side, it’s a balanced attack that

leads UK. The Wildcats have four players with over 100 kills. Leading the charge is Frazier, who has a team-best 159 kills and averages 3.18 per set. Billings has 138 spikes, while Morgan ads 107 and hits a team-high .326.¢ The Wildcats have senior setter Christine Hart-

mann to spread the ball around to multiple attackers. Hartmann leads the team with 399 assists, for a 10.50 dimes per set average, ranking her fifth in the league and 66th in the nation.¢ Billing and Frazier also lead the team in aces, tal-

lying 17 and 10, respectively. ¢ Senior libero Stephanie Klefot has a team-best

198 digs, ranking seventh in the SEC with a 3.96 scoop per set average, but UK also has two players in Jackie Napper and Billings with over 100 digs. ¢ UK was voted to finish second in the SEC East.¢ Kentucky volleyball head coach Craig Skinner is

in his eighth season at the helm of the Wildcats and has led the squad to seven consecutive NCAA Tourna-ment appearances. He was most recently named the 2011 AVCA South Region Coach of the Year after lead-ing UK to the Sweet 16 a season ago. He’s coached eight All-Americans at UK and holds a career head coaching record of 165-71. Skinner is 97-42 against the SEC at UK.
