2008 Utah Outlook

Utah plans to spread it on thick this season with the return of several key players from the injured list. The spread offense, run so effectively by the 2003-05 Utes, gave way to a hybrid model, customized to available personnel, in the last two years. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, Utah’s playbook will again swell to the size it was in 2005, when Utah led the Mountain West Conference and finished 12th in the nation in total offense. With size, speed, experience and all-conference accolades at virtually every position, the outlook is bright for the 2008 Utes. Eight starters return, among them the quarterback, four linemen, two receivers and the running back. Only at center will there be a novice starter and it is also the only position that does not boast backups with significant playing experience.

Quarterback A strong, accurate arm, excellent running ability and intelligence make Brian Johnson the prototypical spread option quarterback. Here’s how important Johnson is to Utah’s fortunes: Upon his return to the starting lineup from a

shoulder injury suffered in the 2007 season-opener, Utah won eight of its last nine games and Johnson was named the Poinsettia Bowl Offensive MVP. Despite his success a year ago, Johnson did not amass the numbers he posted as a second-team all-conference pick in 2005, when he led the MWC and finished fourth in the nation in total offense. The dip can be attributed the elimination of his running plays (to protect his shoulder), which in turn, all but shelved the option. The situation should remedy itself following successful off-season arthroscopic surgery. Johnson, who missed the entire 2006 season while successfully rehabilitating from a knee injury, expects his arm to also be at full strength soon, although he’ll sit out some drills in the spring for precautionary purposes and to allow the young quarterbacks in the system to get repetitions. The coaches already know what one of their future QB candidates has to offer. Corbin Louks, a true freshman a year ago, dropped his redshirt plans and played in the final 10 games in pre-determined situations. He showed some dazzling running skills – averaging 4.9 yards per rush – and also threw two touchdown passes. The other scholarship quarterbacks in spring camp are sophomore Chad Manis, who redshirted last year, and incoming freshman DeVonte Christopher. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Manis was recruited from the junior college ranks in 2007 for his raw potential. Christopher, the 2007 Nevada Player of the Year, passed for over 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns as a high school senior.

Wide Receiver The return of senior Brent Casteel from the disabled list could have a similar impact to Johnson’s reappearance as the starting quarterback did last year. The versatile Casteel is a tough, sure-handed receiver and a talented runner. He led Utah in all-purpose yards as a second-team all-conference pick in 2006 – compiling 600 receiving and 262 rushing yards and ranking second on the team in both categories. Casteel suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second game of 2007, but is back to virtually full speed for spring ball. Senior Bradon Godfrey, Utah’s other returning starter, owns a reputation as a fearless receiver willing to repeatedly go over the middle for the ball. As a junior, his 50 catches for 524 yards ranked second on the team. Prepared to move into a starting role is senior Freddie Brown. Like Godfrey, Brown stands 6-foot-3 and he also runs some of the best routes on the team. Since Utah utilizes a three and even four-receiver set, depth is especially critical at this position. Jereme Brooks and Elijah Wesson are in the mold of Casteel, in that they are equally

adept at catching passes and running the ball. The diminutive Brooks (5-9, 170) rushed for three touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes as a true freshman. Wesson, a converted defensive back, averaged 6.4 yards per rush while lining up as a receiver. Wesson will miss spring ball after January ankle surgery, and his return, plus the arrival of heralded junior college transfers David Reed and Aiona Key, will make the competition heat up come August.

Running Back An injury to a key player took its toll initially last year, before eventually making Utah a deeper team at running back. The run game faltered when All-America junior college transfer Matt Asiata broke his leg in the first half of Utah’s first game. It took a couple of games for replacement Darrell Mack to find his groove after pulling out of a planned redshirt year, but then he was off and running. Mack finished as just the ninth 1,000-yard rusher in school history – racking up 1,204 yards on his way to second-team all-conference honors. Ray Stowers came into his own as well, rushing for 123 yards against Colorado State as Mack’s backup. With the powerful Asiata (6-0, 235) healed and ready to compete, Utah has three big, strong running backs vying for time. And that’s not all. Eddie Wide played as a true freshman and gives Utah a different look with his smaller frame (5-10, 190) and shifty moves. A freshman with the talent to force his

Senior receiver Bradon Godfrey was second on the team with 50 receptions last year.

Quarterback Brian Johnson was named the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl Offensive MVP.

way into the lineup early in his career is highly touted Sausan Shakerin, the 2007 Utah class 5A MVP.

Offensive Line/tight End The possibility of vote-splitting may be the only way to keep tackle Zane Beadles and guards Robert Conley and Caleb Schlauderaff off the all-conference first team in 2008. Beadles and Conley, who have started their entire careers at Utah, are arguably the best at their position in the league. Schlauderaff, initially the backup left guard as a redshirt freshman, got his chance when injuries struck and was an overnight success. With his physical profile (6-5, 300) and intuitive play, he could become the best lineman in the league. Beadles, Conley and Schlauderaff are so good that they can cast a shadow over giant Dustin Hensel (6-7, 320), who did a solid job as the starting right tackle last year and has continued to improve. All eyes will be on the center, where sophomore Zane Taylor is projected to start after playing mostly on special teams last fall. His backup, junior Tyler Williams, is another with mostly special teams experience. That’s not the case at left guard, where senior Corey Seiuli started before an injury opened the door for Schlauderaff. Another lineman with playing experience is left tackle Walter Watts. Moving over from the defensive line to back up Conley is sophomore Neli A’asa. At tight end, Colt Sampson’s receiving

talents could lead to some balls thrown his way. His backup is sophomore Brad Clifford, but in August, watch for Dudley LaPorte, whose 30 receptions were the most in the nation last season by a junior college tight end.

Graduation took a big toll at linebacker and on the line, so the outlook for those positions is somewhat uncertain going into the 2008 season. That could be great news for Utah. A year ago, an almost completely renovated defensive secondary was pegged as an area of concern. The Utes went on to lead the nation in pass efficiency defense while finishing 11th in pass defense (first in the MWC). The situation has flip-flopped this year, as just two starting linemen (one who will move from tackle to end) and a single linebacker return. Meanwhile in the secondary, both first-string corners and a safety are back. Despite a dearth of returning starters in some areas, there are players with game-day experience at every defensive position. The only staff turnover from a year ago is at safety, where former Ute All-American Morgan Scalley takes over.

Defensive Backs Nine of Utah’s 10 contributing defensive backs from last fall are still in Ute uniform. Unfortunately, the only graduate was a heavy hitter. Steve Tate, a first-team all-conference safety, was Utah’s leading tackler in 2006 and 2007. There may be a Tate lying in wait, however. Poinsettia Bowl Defensive MVP Joe Dale delivered a career-high 12 tackles against Navy in the final game of the season, and his heroics included a game-clinching interception with under a minute remaining in Utah’s 35-32 win. His backup, senior RJ Rice, played in every game last season and started in four. At free safety, athletically gifted Robert Johnson will start for a second year. Last year, as a sophomore juco transfer, Johnson emerged as one of the nation’s most talented and exciting safeties. Look for him to improve on his honorable mention all-conference accolades after successful off-season surgery to repair the dislocated shoulder that impacted almost his entire 2007 season. In the game prior to his injury, Johnson was named the Bronco Nagurski National Defensive Player of Week for his role in Utah’s upset victory over No. 11 UCLA. At the corners Brice McCain and R.J. Stanford are well suited to Utah’s man coverage scheme. McCain was a second-team all-conference pick as a junior, when he led the Utes with 11 pass breakups. Capable of creating match-up problems is Sean Smith (6-3, 217). Smith starts in the nickel alignment and led Utah with four interceptions last fall.

Junior left tackle Zane Beadles (far right) will be one of the anchors of Utah’s offensive line.

Junior free safety Robert Johnson earned honor-able mention all-Mountain West Conference honors last season.

2008 Utah Outlook

Defensive Line Koa Misi and Paul Kruger simultaneously joined the starting lineup in the third game of 2007 when the coaches determined their ability outweighed their inexperience. The move paid off. Misi, a sophomore juco transfer, and Kruger, a redshirt freshman coming off a two-year church mission, finished as the top tacklers on the line, and Utah’s third and fourth leading tacklers overall. Before they had played a down for Utah, Whittingham identified both Kruger and Misi as future first-team all-conference players. The all-conference honors should come as early as this season. Kruger has a leg up after earning honorable mention all-MWC accolades and several freshman All-America awards a year ago. Even playing out of position, Misi put up impressive numbers as an undersized tackle, recording 67 stops and eight tackles for loss. His speed will play an even bigger factor now that he is manning the left end. Misi’s move was facilitated by the current candidates at tackle. Sophomore Isley Filiaga sat out last year due to transfer regulations and the coaches like him as the starter at nose tackle. Getting the first crack at Misi’s old position is Lei Talamaivao, who played in seven games as a true freshman last year. Utah deploys a rotating system on the line to keep players fresh, and two proven contributors are senior end Greg Newman and junior tackle Kenape Eliapo. Eliapo got starter-like minutes a year ago. Look for increased production from senior Aaron Tonga, one of three 300-pound tackles who will play (Filiaga and Eliapo are the others).

Linebackers There are more questions to answer here than at any other position, but the fact the Ute coaches didn’t recruit any linebackers in their latest signing class indicates the faith they have in the current personnel. This much is known: Stevenson Sylvester is primed for an all-conference junior year, coming off an 86-tackle season (second-best on the team) that included 10 tackles for loss. Even more impressive is that he did most of his work in the last seven games and was voted to the honorable mention all-

MWC team despite not starting until midseason. The jury is out on the rest of the linebacking crew. Mike Wright, a walk-on who was awarded a scholarship in January, played well in a prominent backup role last season and will start in the middle. Like Sylvester, Nai Fotu’s contribution increased dramatically when senior starter Kyle Brady was lost for the season to an injury. Fotu, a true freshman defensive end who had previously played mostly on special teams, found himself thrown into a new position with his own package of plays. He made such an impression that he’ll need command of the entire play book this year, since he’s slated to start at stud linebacker. Behind the starters, only former walk-on Kepa Gaison has seen any significant action at linebacker. Gaison, a one-time kicker, broke into the backup rotation at midseason.

Senior Louie Sakoda is the nation’s best combination punter and kicker, and arguably the best at both positions even when compared to individual specialists. A first-team All-America punter as a junior last year (Football Writers Association of America, CBSSports.com), Sakoda also made a number of All-America teams as a place kicker. The MWC Special Teams Player of the Year for the past two years, Sakoda has virtually no

weakness. He has distance, accuracy, hang time and placement skills. He is mentally tough and cool under pressure. He is so athletic that he presents a threat to run or throw the ball when lined up for punts or field goals. A leading candidate for both the Ray Guy and Lou Groza awards, Sakoda was the only dual punter-kicker to place in the top five in the nation in both punting average (44.3) and field goal percentage (.864). He ranked first in the MWC and 11th in the nation in yards per punt, despite sacrificing distance at times for strategic defensive position. Nearly 40 percent of Sakoda’s punts (28-of-73) were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, and he placed six punts inside the 5-yard line. As a place kicker, Sakoda was perfect inside 40 yards (9-of-9) and he ranked third in the nation in made field goals from beyond 40 yards (10-of-13). He made 19-of-22 total field goal attempts, with his only misses coming from 45, 48 and 51 yards. The rest of the kick team has Ben Vroman kicking off, Clint Mower snapping and Bradon Godfrey holding for the second year. Even losing the MWC’s best punt returner, Derrek Richards, the Ute return game should sizzle. Speedy Jereme Brooks looks like Utah’s top choice for both punt and kick returns. An exciting player with the ball in his hands, Brooks stepped into the kick return job relatively late last year and averaged 22.2 yards per return. Other top candidates include Brent Casteel at both positions, and Eddie Wide on kick returns.

Senior Louie Sakoda was an All-American as both a place kicker and punter last season.

Junior linebacker Stevenson Sylvester was second on the team with 86 tackles in 2007.

Head Coach Kyle Whittingham

tah football coach Kyle Whittingham puts some impressive streaks on the line

entering his fourth season at the helm, among them three straight winning seasons and a 3-0 bowl record. He is also overseeing the nation’s second-longest current postseason win streak: Utah is 7-0 in bowl games since 1999 – including five straight victories from 2003-2007 – and he has participated in every one of those as either a head or assistant coach.

In 114 years of Utah football, only Whittingham has made it to a bowl game in each of his first three seasons as the head coach. His teams played – and defeated – Georgia Tech in the 2005 Emerald Bowl, Tulsa in the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl and Navy in the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl. Including 11 years as an assistant coach (the final 10 as the defensive coordinator), Whittingham has participated in more wins than anyone in Utah football history. Since he joined the staff as the defensive line coach in 1994, the program has won 67-percent of its games – compiling a 110-55 record (24-14 as the head coach) – played in nine bowl games (winning eight), captured four conference titles and finished in the Top-10 twice. He was the defensive coordinator in 2004, when Utah became the first non-BCS affiliated team to play in a BCS bowl game, and finished with a 12-0 record and a No. 4 national ranking. Whittingham served as the co-head coach in that historic game – helping Utah beat Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. Many of the biggest stars from the undefeated 2004 team moved on to the NFL after the season. Five players were drafted – among them quarterback Alex Smith as the No. 1 NFL Draft pick. Their departures left Whittingham with an almost entirely new starting lineup in his first year as the head coach, yet by

season’s end, the 2005 Utes resembled their No. 4-ranked predecessor with victories over Brigham Young and No. 24 Georgia Tech. Utah led the Mountain West Conference (finishing 12th in the nation) in total offense and ranked second in the league in total defense. Also in his first year as the head coach, Whittingham recorded a couple of school ‘firsts.’ At the start of the 2005 season, Utah broke a 75-year-old school record for consecutive wins (17) with a win over Arizona. Utah ran the streak to 18 games before losing in overtime to eventual league champion TCU. Whittingham finished the season as the first novice head coach ever to take a Utah team to a bowl game. His 2006 squad posted some impressive results as well. The Utes

led the nation in net punting and the conference in kickoff returns in Whittingham’s second season in

charge. They ranked in the top-three in the league in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense, passing offense and rushing defense. Last year’s team won nine games and featured impressive non-conference victories over No. 11-ranked UCLA (44-6) and Louisville (44-35), and a seven-game win streak that stretched from Sept. 29 to Nov. 17. Utah finished strong, winning eight of its last nine games. Ten Utes earned first- or second-team all-conference honors – the most of any team in the Mountain West Conference. The 2007 Utes led the nation in pass efficiency defense and finished fifth nationally in scoring defense and opponent third down conversion. Utah led the league in those categories, as well as passing defense and turnover margin (No. 13 in the nation). On an individual level, Whittingham has coached four All-Americans, including first-team All-America defenders Luther Elliss (1994) and Eric Weddle (2006), and first-team All-America punter/kicker Louie Sakoda (2007). Whittingham also coached an Associated Press second-team All-American in Morgan Scalley (2004). Elliss and Weddle were both Consensus All-Americans and NFL draft picks. Sakoda was recognized as a first-team All-America punter by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and CBSSports.com, and a first-team All-America place-kicker by Rivals.com. He also made several All-America second teams as either a punter or kicker. Whittingham’s players regularly receive all-conference notoriety, and a Ute won MWC Defensive Player of the Year three years running (Scalley in 2004 and Weddle in 2005 and 2006). Whittingham has mentored 28 first-team all-conference players total as either a defensive coach or head coach at Utah. He has sent 20 players to the NFL – 12 as draft picks and eight as free agents who made the team. Whittingham protégés currently on NFL rosters include Andre Dyson, Jonathan Fanene, Steve Fifita, Quinton Ganther, Ma’ake Kemoeatu, John Madsen, Sione Pouha,

Head Coach Kyle Whittingham

Paul Soliai, Kelly Talavou and Weddle. Prior to his appointment as head Ute coach on Dec. 8, 2004, Whittingham served as the Mountain West Conference’s longest-tenured and most successful defensive coordinator. In 2002, he was recognized as the MWC Co-Defensive Coordinator of the Year by the Las Vegas Review Journal. As a first-year Ute assistant in 1994, he coached a defensive line anchored by Consensus All-American Elliss. That team led the league in every defensive category and ranked 18th in the nation in total defense. Utah beat Arizona in the Freedom Bowl and finished the 1994 season with a 10-2 mark and ranked in the top 10 in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls. In 1995, he stepped in as the coordinator – replacing his father Fred, who left for a job in the NFL – and the program didn’t miss a beat. Utah led the conference in total defense three times under his direction (2000, 2001 and 2002). In 2002, Utah ranked No. 1 in the MWC in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense – finishing No. 12 in the nation in the latter. The Ute defense recorded 14 top-20 statistical rankings from 1995-2004. Whittingham’s defenses were best known for keeping opponents off the scoreboard. Utah led the league in scoring defense four times from 1999-2005 (ranking No. 2 in 2003, 2004 and 2005) and finished No. 13, 18, 13, 29, 19 and 22 in the nation during that span. In his final year as Utah’s defensive coordinator, the 2004 Utes finished 12-0 and ranked No. 4 in the nation. On January 1, 2005, with Whittingham serving as co-head coach, Utah set a Fiesta Bowl record for quarterback sacks (9) and held Big East co-champion Pittsburgh to 17 rushing yards and seven points. Whittingham began his coaching career in 1985-86 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Brigham Young. He went from there to the College of Eastern Utah, where he held the

position of defensive coordinator in 1987. His first full-time NCAA coaching job was at Idaho State, where he spent six years (1988-93), his last two as the defensive coordinator. A linebacker for Brigham Young from 1978-81, Whittingham earned first-team all-WAC and WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1981. He played in the Hula and Japan Bowls after his senior year, then launched a professional career that included stints with the Denver Broncos (1982 training camp) and the Denver Gold and New Orleans Breakers in the U.S. Football League (USFL) from 1983-85. He played on the Los Angeles Rams’ replacement squad in 1987. Whittingham graduated from BYU in 1984 and received his master’s in 1987. Born Nov. 21, 1959, he was raised in Provo, Utah. He is married to the former Jamie Daniels. They have four children.

Assistant Coaches

Fourth-year defensive coordinator Gary Andersen is in his 11th year overall at Utah. He coached the Ute defensive line from 1997-2002 and in 2004. He kept the defensive line with his promotion to defensive coordinator/assistant head coach in 2005. Andersen was the head coach at Southern Utah in 2003.

Andy Ludwig is in his fourth year as Utah’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He served in the same capacity at Fresno State (1998-01) and Oregon (2002-04). OREGON StatE 24, Utah 7Corvallis, Ore.Reser Stadium [40,409]

CORVALLIS—Quarterback Brian Johnson and running back Matt Asiata both suffered first half injuries – Johnson to his throwing arm and Asiata to a broken leg – and Oregon State pulled away for a 24-7 victory. Utah scored first when Johnson found Brent Casteel for a 36-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Sophomore cornerback Sean Smith set up the score with an interception on the OSU 34-yard line. Smith, in his first career start, finished with two picks. Johnson completed 8-of-13 passes for 119 yards (1 TD) before leaving the field on Utah’s last offensive series of the half. Tommy Grady played the rest of the way – completing 9-of-24 passes for 59 yards. Without Asiata (4 rushes for 16 yards), Utah suffered a terrible night rushing – gaining just 18 yards. Kyle Brady’s eight tackles led a Ute defense that wore down in the second half after holding OSU to seven points and 126 total yards in the first half.

aIR FORCE 20, Utah 12Salt Lake CityRice-Eccles Stadium [43,454]

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah’s offense came to life late in the game before stalling inside the 1-yard line in a 20-12 loss to Air Force. Utah rolled up 151 yards in the fourth quarter – nearly matching its production from the previous three quarters combined (162 yards) – and first-time starting quarterback Tommy Grady lofted a 34-yard touchdown pass to Derrek Richards to narrow the gap to 17-12. The Utes unsuccessfully tried a two-point conversion and Air Force got some breathing room by scoring a field goal on its next series. Grady and the Utes responded with a 79-yard drive that ended six inches short of a chance to go for two and send the game into overtime. Two Ute receivers finished with career highs in receiving yards: Derrek Richards (109) and Bradon Godfrey (83). Louie Sakoda made field goal attempts of 43 and 40 yards in a game that was tied 3-3 at the half. Steve Tate and Kyle Brady led the Ute defense with 11 tackles each. Utah lost starting receiver Brent Casteel and starting tackle Gabe Long to knee injuries.

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah dominated every phase of the game, stunning No. 11 UCLA, 44-6. Tommy Grady passed for a career-high 246 yards and three touchdowns – two to first-time starting running back Darrell Mack. Mack had his best game ever – and the best game by a Ute back this year – rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown. In his first start, free safety Robert Johnson grabbed two interceptions, broke up a pass and forced a fumble into the end zone for a touchback. Johnson’s strip prevented the Bruins from closing to within three points and Utah’s offense took advantage by scoring on the change of possession to take a 24-6 lead. Yet another first-time starter, Koa Misi, led Utah with eight tackles and two of Utah’s five total sacks. Kicker Louie Sakoda scored 14 points, by making all three field goal attempts and all five PATs. Sakoda’s field goals were from 47, 45 and 44 yards out. Utah surprised the Bruins by playing true freshman Corbin Louks at quarterback in certain situations. Louks threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to true freshman tight end Dallin Rogers in the third quarter.

LAS VEGAS—Utah failed to score for the first time in 14 years – falling to UNLV 27-0. Utah, which had not lost to the Rebels since 1979, trailed 13-0 after three quarters. UNLV scored twice in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Tommy Grady started the game but gave way to Brian Johnson in the second half. Johnson, making his first appearance since injuring his throwing shoulder in the first game of the season, moved the team to the 1-yard line on his first series but couldn’t score on fourth and goal. An incomplete pass on the next offensive drive stopped Utah on fourth and one at the UNLV 30-yard line. Darrell Mack was Utah’s lone offensive bright spot, rushing for 89 yards. Las Vegas native Stevenson Sylvester had a career-high 14 tackles (2.5 for a loss).

SALT LAKE CITY—Darrell Mack rushed for a career-high 132 yards, Derrek Richards returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, and Steve Tate totaled 13 tackles to lead Utah to a 34-18 victory over Utah State. The Aggies drew first blood – taking a 7-0 first-quarter lead – but Utah evened the score on the next possession when Brian Johnson found freshman Jereme Brooks in the end zone on a 22-yard pass play. Richards put the Utes ahead – a lead they never relinquished – with his career-long punt return. Utah State got within four (14-10) on a field goal before Utah reeled off 10 unanswered points to take control. Johnson threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Marquis Wilson, and Louie Sakoda finished off a 17-point second quarter with a 31-yard field goal. Mack put the Utes on the board in the third quarter on a 3-yard run and Sakoda booted a 39-yard field goal in the fourth. Utah State scored with 2:33 remaining, then recovered an onside kick and advanced to the Utah 13-yard line before Tate caught an Aggie receiver behind the line on fourth and five.

Utah 44, LOUISvILLE 35Louisville, Ky.Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium [40,894]

LOUISVILLE—Brian Johnson and Darrell Mack put on a dazzling offensive show to lead Utah to a 44-35 shootout win over Louisville in a nationally televised ESPN game. In his best outing since injuring his knee in November of 2005, Johnson completed 24-of-31 passes for 312 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown. Mack rushed for a career-high 163 yards – the most by a Ute since 2003 – and three touchdowns. Utah held Louisville’s high-octane offense to one touchdown in the first half and led 27-7 But the Cardinals quadrupled their yardage in the second half and closed to within six points (41-35) at the 3:33 mark. Louie Sakoda’s 46-yard field goal made it a two-possession game with a minute remaining and Louisville ran out of time on the Utah 30-yard line. Steve Tate had nine tackles and Gabe Long contributed two tackles for loss and two pass breakups to lead the defense, which lost starting linebacker Kyle Brady for the season to a torn Achilles.

San Diego State led briefly, 7-6, before Sakoda’s 27-yard boot with 0:05 left in the half put the Utes up for good. Darrell Mack rushed for 131 yards – including an 80-yard first quarter – and caught six balls for 45 yards and a touchdown. Brian Johnson completed 22-of-29 passes for 220 yards and Corbin Louks threw a touchdown pass on his only attempt. The defense pitched a shutout after SDSU’s lone score in the second quarter, with Sean Smith providing a key interception – his fourth of the year. Stevenson Sylvester led all tacklers with eight and Nai Fotu had a sack, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—Big plays by the defense lifted Utah to its fourth-straight victory, 27-20 over TCU last Thursday. Martail Burnett returned one of Utah’s four interceptions 55 yards for his first career touchdown to give the Utes a 24-14 lead late in the first half. Also intercepting passes were RJ Rice, Steve Tate and Robert Johnson. Tate finished with a team-high 12 tackles and a sack. Utah led 24-17 at the intermission, but neither team could generate much offense in the second half. A scoreless third quarter was followed by a 3-point fourth quarter for both teams. Running back Darrell Mack (100 yards) accounted for all but seven of Utah’s rushing yards in his fourth-straight 100-yard game. He also scored the game’s first touchdown. Receiver Marquis Wilson had a career day with 73 yards and a touchdown, and Louie Sakoda made both field goal attempts to lead the offense.

FORT COLLINS, COLO.—Utah rushed for a season-high 322 yards and held Colorado State to a field goal in a 27-3 victory in Ft. Collins on Oct. 27. Utah built its case early, taking a 20-3 lead into the locker room. The Utes didn’t score again until the fourth quarter, but it didn’t matter, since Colorado State was rendered helpless by a vicious pass rush that resulted in seven sacks. The Rams converted on 2-of-13 third down attempts and mustered just 271 total yards of offense, including 101 in a scoreless second half. Steve Tate led the Utes with 12 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. On offense, Utah got 100-yard rushing games from both Darrell Mack (151) and Ray Stowers (123). Brian Johnson passed for two touchdowns, Stowers scored on a fourth-quarter run and Louie Sakoda booted two field goals.

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah returned off a bye week to demolish Wyoming, 50-0. Utah’s defense was phenomenal, forcing five turnovers and getting six sacks while holding the Cowboys to a paltry 122 yards of total offense. Gabe Long had three sacks and forced a fumble, while Steve Tate and Justin Jones both contributed interceptions. The offense took advantage of great field position all night, especially during a 40-point first half. Utah punched out 505 yards of total offense against a Wyoming team that entered the game ranked No. 6 in the nation in total defense. Darrell Mack rushed for 97 yards to lead a 278-yard rushing effort and Derrek Richards had 86 receiving yards. Brian Johnson completed 17-of-29 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown, with his only mistake a first-half interception when going for the end zone. Louie Sakoda made all three field goal attempts, averaged 49.8 yards on five punts and set up a touchdown by completing a 41-yard pass play on a fake punt.

SALT LAKE CITY— Utah won the battle of seven-win teams, 28-10 over New Mexico, on the strength of a defense that recorded three quarters of shutout ball. New Mexico scored all 10 of its points in the third quarter to cut the lead to 14-10 before the Utes slammed the end zone door again. A pair of defensive linemen even teamed up to score Utah’s final touchdown and put the game away. Paul Kruger sacked Lobo QB Donovan Porterie and forced a fumble, which Koa Misi scooped up and carried untouched for a 28-yard touchdown. Steve Tate led the defense with 10 tackles, and both Sean Smith and Brice McCain tied the school single game record for pass breakups with four apiece. Leading the offense were Darrell Mack (77 yards rushing, 1 TD) and Bradon Godfrey (77 yards receiving, 1 TD). Brian Johnson passed for 165 yards and a touchdown.

BRIGhaM YOUNG 17, Utah 10Provo, UtahLavell Edwards Stadium [64,749]

SALT LAKE CITY—For the second straight year, Utah took a late lead over arch rival Brigham Young only to see the Cougars snatch a last-second victory. Darrell Mack scored on a 1-yard run with 1:34 remaining to give Utah a 10-9 edge that looked like it would hold up when BYU backpedaled on the first three downs of its final possession. Everything changed on fourth down and 18, when Cougar receiver Austin Collie beat a Ute defender for a 49-yard reception. The No. 23 ranked Cougars would go on to score a touchdown and a two-point conversion for a 17-10 lead. The Utes got the ball back with 38 seconds left and advanced into BYU territory before running out of time. Robert Johnson’s career-high 12 tackles headlined a sterling Ute defensive effort. Braden Godfrey led the Ute offense with 73 receiving yards and Louie Sakoda made his only field goal try – a 35-yarder.

Utah 35, NavY 32San Diego, Calif.Qualcomm Stadium [39,129]

SAN DIEGO — Poinsettia Bowl offensive MVP Brian Johnson put on a second-half passing clinic, defensive MVP Joe Dale made a game-saving interception with less than a minute remaining, and Utah edged Navy 35-32 in the first bowl game of the season. Stymied on the ground in the first half, Utah turned to Johnson’s arm after the break. He connected on 20 of his final 22 pass attempts including 11 straight completions. Johnson also rushed for 69 yards and a touch-down. A 28-point second half rallied Utah to a 35-25 lead with 1:27 remaining in the game. But Navy struck back with a 58-yard pass play to narrow the gap to 35-32. The Midshipmen recovered their onside kick and advanced into Utah territory before Dale’s first career interception on the 31-yard line sealed a Ute victory. Dale finished with a career-high 12 tackles. Paul Kruger added 10 tack-les and a sack. Darrell Mack rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
