The nal day of Formal Fall Recruitment is Bid Day. At 8:00 am, you will receive

be provided from the sorority you join.

As a new student, you are also encouraged to attend Dawg Daze, the University of

Washington’s tradition for welcoming new students to campus. The Panhellenic As-sociation and Interfraternity Council will be hosting New Member Day on Sept. 23.

As you can see, there are many reasons to stick around for Welcome Week; however,

you can go home or schedule work if necessary. You will have time during the week

       a   t   t    i   r

eThere is no specied dress code during recruit-ment week. The most important thing is for you to becomfortable and be yourself. It is not necessary for you

to purchase an entire new wardrobe in order to partici-pate in the sorority recruitment process.

PLEASE wear comfortable shoes!  We strongly dis-courage you from wearing a brand new pair of shoes as

you will be doing a lot of walking, sitting, and standing,

so you will want to be comfortable. Seattle weather can

be unpredictable in autumn; keep this in mind when de-

ciding what to wear throughout the week. An umbrellais always a good idea! To give you a better sense of what

to expect, we have outlined the types of outts we gen-

    erally see throughout recruitment week.

What To WearOrientation  is casual and comfortable. Feel free to

wear whatever you like during this day!

Open House Round will involve a lot of walking, so

you will want to wear some comfortable walking shoes.Clothing worn during this round is casual, such as jeans,

shorts, or capris, which will complement the two all-

Panhellenic t-shirts you will receive at orientation.

  • 8/20/2019 UW FFR Recruitment Brochure 2015

    7/16

House Tour Day is similar tobusiness casual attire. A dress, casual skirt or pants with a nice top will

work well. Keep in mind the length

of your skirt or dress since you willbe walking up and down stairs. For this same reason, we do notadvise you to wear heels, unless you

     wear heels all the time!

Philanthropy Day is slightly more formal, and a sundress or nice skirt outt would be

good choice. Many of theseoutts are the

types that would be worn to a luncheon.

Preference Day events are themost formal events of the week.

Typically, women wear a cocktailor nice dinner dress; however, please avoid rhinestones, sequins, or formal gowns.Homecoming dressesusually work!

Bid Day is casual and each sorority will provide the new members with

    a t-shirt. Wear something comfortable

for moving in to your new home!

Recruitment Counselors The Formal Recruitment process can be exciting

and overwhelming so, the Panhellenic Association

has chosen sorority women to guide you through

the process. Recruitment Counselors, also knownas “RCs,” are upperclassmen who have disassoci-

ated from their chapter during recruitment week so

they can maintain an objective, non-partisan outlook.

    Recruitment Counselors undergo extensive training

throughout spring and summer before recruitment, and are prepared to assist you through this process.

Their purpose is to help make your recruitment experi-

ence the best it can be!

You will be divided into groups with other women go-ing through recruitment, and each group will be as-

signed RCs. Recruitment Counselors live in Haggett

Hall with PNMs during recruitment so that they are on

hand to answer your questions, be available to you, and

plan exciting off-hour activities for the group. If you

are not staying in the residence halls during recruitment, you are welcome to stick around in the evening to par-

ticipate in these fun activities so you can get to know

other PNMs and give yourself a fun break from recruit-ment events at the end of the day.

Absences during Recruitment WeekIt is very important to attend all of the events during recruitment week to which

you are invited. Missing events can hinder your chance of being invited to join asorority. If an extenuating circumstance, religious holiday observance, universitysponsored event or class makes it impossible for you to attend an event during

the week, you must contact our ofce as soon as possible. We will inform the

sororities that you are excused and unable to attend.

ServicesRequests for special services or accommodations related to a disability duringrecruitment can be made by contacting the Panhellenic Association in advance.

Withdrawal From RecruitmentParticipating in Formal Recruitment does not obligate you to join a sorority.

The recruitment process provides you with an opportunity to learn more about

sorority life. You may decide that the sorority lifestyle is not for you. In that case, talk with your Recruitment Counselor to learn about your options. You will also

need to sign ofcial withdrawal paperwork in the Panhellenic Ofce.

Legacies Who is classied as a ‘legacy’ differs from chapter to chapter but is typically

a PNM who has a mother, step-mother, grandmother, aunt or sister who is amember of a sorority. Legacies may be given special consideration by the sororities

with whom their family members are afliated, but legacies are never guaranteed

membership in that organization. If you have questions about the legacy policyof a particular sorority you may contact their inter/national headquarters to nd

    out more specic information.

Letters of Recommendation A ‘recommendation’ is a letter of introduction written about a PNM sent directly

to a sorority from a sorority alumna. Letters of recommendation fo directly tothe chapter house. Address information is available on the individual chapter’s

websites. It is not the responsibility of the PNM to obtain a recommendationletter for a sorority. If a sorority alumna offers to write you a letter, go ahead and

accept it! It is perfectly appropriate for letters to be sent on your behalf; however,

recommendation letters are not necessary for you to participate in recruitmentat UW, and they do not guarantee an invitation from a sorority. Letters of

recommendation should be sent directly to the chapter house, as you can nd

mailing addresses on their chapter websites.

Housing During RecruitmentIf you do not live close to the University of Washington

or do not wish to commute, you have the great option

of staying in a residence hall during recruitment week.

Haggett Hall is conveniently located close to the sororityhouses, making it easy to walk to and from recruitment

events. Staying in the residence hall is a great way to

meet other women going through the recruitment

process as well as hang out with the Panhellenic ofcers

and Recruitment Counselors who will also be staying inthe residence hall during the week.

You can nd more information and registeronline through the following link http://www.

    out of town and are

    planning to stay in the

residence hall, you maybring all of your school-

    year belongings with

    you, but we encourage if

you can, to wait to bring

all your things until youknow what chapter you

are in and what types of

Will I Get Into ASorority?Recruitment is a mutual selectionprocess. After each round of

events, sororities and potential newmembers will enter their preferences

via computer for the next round. The PNM’s preferences of whichsororities they would like to revisit

will be matched to those of thesororities’ invitations. The numberof sororities you are able to visitdecreases as the week progresses inorder for you to narrow down yourchoices. It is not atypical to receivefewer than the maximum numberof invitations in any given round;do not let that discourage you!

Typically, any woman who goesthrough the recruitment process

with an open mind and maximizes her opportunities, has the most successin joining a sorority. Being an upperclassman does not necessarily hurt yourchances of joining. If you have further questions, please see our website at www.uwpanhellenic.com or call the Panhellenic Ofce at (206) 543.1810.

Costs of Living in a Sorority The cost of living in a sorority, which is paid quarterly, includes members’ room

and board, national and local dues and one-time membership expenses. Inaddition, the dues cover the staff salary and home needs like cable and internet. You will recieve a more detailed nancial breakdown sheet during House Toursround of Recruitment. Payment plans may be arranged through the individualsorority.
