The 1·iver Avon passes through the town, and is crossed by a bridge of fot1r arches, ,vith light and elegant balustrades ; nea1· are one of the la1·g·est co1·n .. mills i11 tl1e county, and an extensive cloth factory. The Wilts and Be1·ks canal passes on the east of tl1e town, ancl ,~bout lf mile sot1th v.1 a1·fl joins the Kennet and Avon canal. The n1arket is held fo1·tnightly, on Tuesclay, for cattle, sheep, pigs, &c.
