  • DESCRIPTION

From the 1,000 hectares which make up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used for wine growing, under 19 soil types divided into 57 plots with very specific characteristics. The influence of the Duero River’s flow and the passage of time have been vital in developing these soils.

40 of these hectares are used to produce Unico, whose aging of at least ten years (in barrel and bottle) is one of the world’s longest. 225-litre French and American oak barrels, new and used, 20,000-litre tanks. A long complex process, for a legendary wine.

Regaining Unico´s traditional cycle, we once again release this year´s UNICO, ten years after its harvest. A generous, potent vintage providing an expressive, profound, rich wine.

    2009 VINEYARD CYCLE

Winter was particularly cold with almost daily frost and minimum temperatures as low as -14ºC. The last frost was registered on April 23rd but the vineyard did not bud until the following week. During springtime, temperature difference between day and night of nearly 20ºC was registered, what resulted in a slower vegetative development than normal. This, plus a very dry winter and spring, lead to a particularly healthy year in terms of fungus.

High morning temperatures and low night temperatures, at the beginning of summer, favored the cycle to recuperate and veraison took place near August 13th, like an average year. During maturity, other incidents of such temperature differences occurred, benefitting the accumulation of aromas and colors in the grapes.

Harvest started September 23rd and ended October 3rd highlighting the great sanity and complete maturation of the harvest.

  • DESCRIPTION

Alión is formed by a careful selection of plots spread across the best of Ribera del Duero. These plots, which complement each other, joined by the same viticulture as Vega Sicilia, have given rise to firm structured wines.

Of outstanding personality, lots in Alion are guided through 12 months ageing in French oak barrels and 5% American oak, to obtain maximum complexity from the diversity of soil. This vintage was aged in 80% new oak barrels and the remaining in used barriques attaining, without a doubt, the most universal wine of the house; later resting in bottle until reaching a perfect stage for consumption.

Alión is a fleshy, complex, intense wine, where elegance plays a differentiating role and is the winery´s hallmark.

It is definitely modern, genuine and multicultural in character. A perfect pairing. Alión 2015 is particularly rich, concentrated. A very harmonious wine.

    2015 VINEYARD CYCLE

After a rainy 2014/2015 winter (within average annual rainfall) and very good reserves in the depth of all soil types, spring of 2015 was drier than usual. Budding in the vineyard was slightly early and rain during flowering, close to June 12th, helped slower the life cycle of the vineyard, accelerated by the high temperature in the month of May. No significant spring frost was registered.

Weather conditions were normal in Ribera del Duero. Summertime with plenty of heat in the month of July and sporadic storms, leaving no severe consequences. The vineyard´s life cycle was normal showing no stress, though slightly earlier than an average year.

September was a dry month, leading to good sanity and a well-balanced end of grape maturation in Alion´s vineyard, obtaining an aromatic and harmonious harvest between September 21st and 29th.

    STORAGE, SERVING AND DRINKING WINDOW

  • DESCRIPTION

Pintia is located on the banks of the Duero River, within the Toro Appellation. The extreme weather conditions, very cold in the winter and intense heat in the summertime, act upon its complex soil known for its large amount of pebbles.

As part of our determination to achieve the elegance of Vega Sicilia, it is essential to choose the perfect moment to harvest, preserving freshness of aromas and the wine’s acidity.

We polish its ageing by undertaking malolactic fermentation, 60% in barrel, (80% in French oak barrels and 20% American oak), later sitting in the bottle until it is perfect for drinking.

Pintia 2014 has a frank, expressive nose; intense sweet fruity aromas well integrated with a nuance of spicy woodiness. Voluptuous, full-bodied, generous vintage. A wine with rich texture.

    2014 VINEYARD CYCLE

2013 ended with a rainy autumn, a cold start of winter and widespread frost at the end of November and throughout December, while undergoing winter pruning.

2014 began in a similar manner, cold and abundant rainfall accumulating in deep soil generously filling storage capacity of all soil types.

Spring began with soft to moderate temperatures, no relevant frost and sporadic showers towards the beginning of the season. Temperatures decreased between May 20th - 25th followed by rain, holding back the cycle. Summer was warm and dry with light rain on July 4th of 4-8 l/m2 in some areas; a second storm, causing no harm, on July 19th leaving precipitations of 9-14 l/m2 in some plots.

In August, the good water reserves accumulated in winter and the high temperatures, allowed development to continue in the cycle. Excellent indicators of plant maturation were registered up to the first days of September. Light rain helps maturation end successfully and harvest began in the more advanced plots on September 9th, ending in some areas on September 30th, with excellent maturation parameters after several rain episodes.

  • DESCRIPTION

Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia was born in 2004 as the result of a joint venture between Tempos Vega Sicilia and the Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild. Both firms share the idea of making great wines in La Rioja, a unique, singular, inimitable winegrowing region. After five years of terroir evaluation and acquisition of 92 ha of vineyard, the project takes shape in 2009 with the first vintage of our two wines: Macán and Macán Clásico. To offer a modern and unique vision of Rioja is our philosophy, following the Bordeaux model of a first and second wine.

Macán is the winery´s flagship. It is fineness, delicacy and elegance, produced by reason of a meticulous grape selection harvested from our best plots. Ferments 10-15 days in French oak barrels ages in extra fine grain oak barrels for 16 to 18 months and sits in bottle for at least three years before its release.

Macán 2014 projects an attractive expression. It´s a fleshy pleasurable wine, intense and pensive.

Vineyard surface area - 92 ha in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos and El Villar

    Yield - 3,700 kg/ha

    Harvest - Hand-picked in 12-kg cases

    2014 VINEYARD CYCLE

Abundant rainfall and cool temperatures in winter caused delay in the start of the vineyard´s cycle. Improvement was attributed to high temperatures in spring and early summer followed by evenly spread rainfall in key moments for optimal plant development. These favorable conditions, resulting in a healthy vine management, were reinforced with warm weather in July and August. Despite the delay in the start of cycle, ripening accelerated considerably bringing forward the cycle a few days compared to an average year.

Harvest took place the last week of September through the first week of October and in spite of the high temperature episodes and sporadic rainfall, the grapes were very high quality.

To offer a modern and unique vision of Rioja, is our philosophy, following the Bordeaux model of a first and second wine.

Macán Clásico is deeply attached to its territory. Freshness, fruitiness and delicacy are its signs of identity. It is produced in stainless steel casks; part of malolactic fermentation in oak; new oak and single-use barrels, ageing for 12 to 14 months determined only by the characteristics of the vintage. It later sits in bottle for over 18 months.

Macán Clásico offers the purest expression of Rioja´s Tempranillo. It is fresh yet serious, with substance and intensity.

    2015 VINEYARD CYCLE

From a meteorological point of view, 2015 vintage is characterized by its cold and humid winter, close to 500 l/m2 between October and March. This water availability, along with the warm dry weather in spring, eased an optimal budding and the start of the vineyard´s growing cycle. Thermometers remained high throughout the summer, with episodes of showers which provided the needed water for the plant to complete full ripeness. This all helped in good sanity of the vineyard, with the only exception being several important hail incidents that diminished the production in the affected areas. Harvest was normal, between September 17th and October 3rd with dry weather, good temperature difference between day and night, thus, an adequate balance of the grape components.

A warm vintage supported by a favorable winter.

The Tokaj legend has grown and grown in its four-hundred years of history; but it was not until 1630, when the greatness of Oremus vineyard was first spoken of. Today, it is the one with greatest universal acclaim.

Mandolás, made from the grape variety Furmint, has evolved, since its first vintage in 2001 until vintage 2017. A series of improvements has taken place in all of its processes, from the vineyard up to its release, coexisting in perfect harmony, the most modern winemaking and an ancestral tradition.

In the vineyard, we have performed specific plot selection at less than 200 meters above sea level, protected by the northern winds and an adequate planting density. Grape maturity level is deeply cared for, in order to attain optimal selection of healthy golden ripe clusters.

At winery level, changes in new oak barrel toasting, used in our fermentation process, along with frequent and controlled batonages, restores the minerality of the volcanic soil, characteristic of the region.

Mandolás is the result of a unique climate and soil in a world that demands a laborious and careful production. The legend of Mandolás continues.

The Tokaj legend has grown and grown in its four-hundred years of history. But it was not until 1630, when the greatness of Oremus vineyard was first spoken of. Today, it is the one with greatest universal acclaim.

The Tokaj region lies within the range of mountains in Northeast Hungary. Oremus winery is located at the geographical heart of this region.

The production of Aszú wine (teardrop wine) is a meticulous process only possible in exceptional vintages and under unique conditions which enable the development of “Botrytis Cinérea” or noble rot.

For hundreds of years it has been made in the same manner, adding 3 panniers (puttonyos) of 25 kg. each, containing noble Aszú berries to a “Gönc“ barrel (136 litres) of base must.

Aszú berries are macerated for two days until swollen, followed by a gentle press. Fermentation takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels; a slow process which can last up to two months.

Ageing process is completed in 136 and 200-litre barrels for two to three years and bottled for an additional year.

Aszú 3 Puttonyos is elegant and fresh, known for its high acidity which makes it a vibrant yet velvety wine.

    2010 VINEYARD CYCLE

Without a doubt this year has been the most challenging for Tokaj winemakers in the last decade. Several parcels were affected by the late rainfall in spring and early rainfall in summer which flooded the Tolcsva village twice and, along with a few hailstorms in August, led to considerable harvest loss. The rain eventually stopped in early September and Botrytis developed on the remaining grapes. Due to cool temperatures during the growing period, the grapes achieved an extraordinary degree of acidity leading to the classical balance of Tokaj.

The Tokaj legend has grown and grown in its four-hundred years of history; but it was not until 1630, when the greatness of Oremus vineyard was first spoken of. Today, it is the one with greatest universal acclaim.

The Tokaj region lies within the range of mountains in Northeast Hungary. Oremus winery is located at the geographical heart of this region.

At harvest, bunches are picked several times a day but. Only those containing at least 50% of botrytis grapes, are later pressed, giving the noble rot a leading role. Late Harvest is an interesting coupage of different grape varieties producing an exceptionally well-balanced wine.

Fermentation takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels (136- litre “Gönc” and 220-litre “Szerednye”) for 30 days and stops naturally when alcohol level reaches 12 %. Then, the wine ages in Hungarian oak for six months and sits in bottle for a 15-month ageing period.

Late Harvest is a harmonious, fresh, silky wine. It is very versatile, providing a new experience in each sip.

Mid-September rain allows the development of noble rot to spread in the vineyard, turning 2017 into one of the greatest vintages for sweet wine in the last decade. Cool nights and dry sunny afternoons bring out amazing concentration, and superb aromatic potential for the sweet wines of 2017 vintage.

    ESZENCIA

2008DESCRIPTIONThe Tokaj legend has grown and grown in its four-hundred years of history; but it was not until 1630 that the greatness of Oremus vineyard was first spoken of. Today it is the one which receives greatest universal acclaim.

The Tokaj region lies within the range of mountains in Northeast Hungary. Oremus winery is located at the geographical heart of said region.

Eszencia stands out amongst all the Aszú wines. It is an incredibly rich drink, peerless in the world. It has a low alcohol level (1 to 3%), due to the extraordinary sugar content that does not reach full fermentation, and it is not at all unusual to find 500 grams or more residual sugar per litre.

The Aszú berries are picked individually. We should not forget that each picker collects between 5 and 10 kg of grapes a day. The berries are left to settle for 15 to 20 days and, the slight pressure exerted by the weight of the berries themselves, causes extraction of the juice they contain.

The must is then transferred to 50-litre glass containers and left to ferment very slowly. After two years, wine is transferred to 68-litre “átalag” barrels, where it will continue to refine. Finally, it is bottle-aged in a journey that can even last decades.

Eszencia is Tokaj’s nectar and the soul of the Oremus wines. Pure concentration and intensity.
