Victorian Scrapbook AlbumsIn the Victorian era collecting was a popular childhood

hobby. Scraps, which often came inside magazines,were expressly made to be pasted into albums. Thisactivity was considered to be educational for childrenas it taught them organisation, classification anddeveloped their artistic senses.

This selection of scraps has been compiled from theVictorian Scrapbook Album (A7520) from the PowerhouseMuseums Collection. This album is thought to have beencompiled between 1880 and 1890. It contains commerciallyproduced embossed and die cut scraps.

The Victorians were avid collectors and these albumsillustrate their preoccupation with collecting and arranging

pictures. The albums have been carefully arranged intothemes. A few pages also contain pressed and dried flowersand ferns, as well as personal Christmas and birthdaycards.
