2. The KotoThe Koto is a 13 stringedinstrument, it is
playedmanually, by ones hands.The picture on the top rightshows the
names of thestrings. The Koto wasoriginally used for

3. ShamisenA Japanese three-stringfretless plucked lute. In
theKansai area of Kyoto andOsaka it is called samisen andas part of
koto chambermusic it is often known assangen. Since the
mid-17thcentury it has been a popularcontributor to the music
ofmany levels of society, fromfolk and theatrical forms toclassical
and avant-gardecompositions. A shamisenplayer usually accompanies
asinger; purely instrumentalmusic occurs primarily
duringinterludes.
4. daiko :One of the most memorabledrums of many taiko
ensemblesis the daiko (). Formany, the daiko solo is theembodiment
of power due tothe size of the drum, thevolume, and the endurance
ittakes to perform. The daiko isthe largest drum of all taiko,
ifnot the entire world. Thelargest daiko are too big tomove and
permanently resideinside a temple or shrine.daiko means big taiko,
butwithin any group, it describesthe largest drum in anensemble,
which could mean 12inches (300 mm) in diameter or12 feet (3.7 m) in
diameter.Made from a single piece ofwood, some daiko come fromtrees
that are hundreds of yearsold.
5. KabikiLavish Japanese stageperformance that includesdance,
music, and dramaticacting, now the nationsmost popular form
ofclassical theatre. Kabuki wasfounded in Kyoto around1600 by the
female templedancer Izumo no *Okuni. Atthat time kabuki referred
topersons or styles that werechic, suggestive, or eccentric.Okuni
often dressed on stagein mens clothing and wore arosary and items
of Europeandress.
