1. About the device1.1. IntroductionThe series 3200 Dual Channel Conductivity TCU isbased on the 4-electrode conductivity principle. Usingan advanced compensation technology, the 3200 TCUmeets the demands of conductivity measurement in awide range, from low conductivities in ultrapure waterin the low conductivity end to acids and bases in thehigh conductivity end.

The TCU is housed in a painted aluminum case andcan be either panel-mounted or wall-mounted. Its frontpanel incorporates an LCD display and an operatingkeypad. It is operated by using the keypad and a menu-based concept. The set-up is stored in a non-volatilememory that preserves the settings even during powerfailures. The settings can be protected with a passwordif necessary.

In the 4-electrode conductivity principle, current andvoltage are measured using separate pairs of elec-trodes. The advantage of this principle is complete in-dependence of electrode over-voltages, which makesit possible to use small electrodes. Small electrodesare good at both high and low conductivities: at highconductivities they are robust against errors caused bythe polarization effect, and at low conductivities theyhelp avoid errors due to electrode capacitance.

One or two sensors can be used. With two sensorsthe TCU can be programmed for differential conductivityor conductivity ratio. Any one of the two channels canbe calibrated from the keyboard. Any one of the twosensors can be used with automatic cell constant (readfrom stored factory calibration) or with manually enteredcell constant.

The TCU contains two galvanically isolated, individu-ally programmable current outputs. Any conductivityor temperature can be directed to an output. The out-puts can be programmed for linear, bilinear, logarithmic, compressed or expanded conductivity output, or forlinear temperature output.

Two individually programmable alarms with relaycontact outputs are available. The alarms can be pro-grammed for conductivity, temperature, or USP 645alarm as maximum or minimum alarms, with or withouttime delay. In case of an error the Error Detectionsystem will show a message on the display.

Features of the TCU:– Individual calibration of channels– Individually selectable conductivity unit and reference

temperature for channels– Selectable cell constant (manual or automatic) for

sensors– Selectable temperature unit– Configurable error detection and alarm system

1.2. Conductivity sensorsThe conductivity sensors use the 4-electrode principlethat compensates for the over-voltage of the currentelectrodes, caused by scaling and precipitation. Errorsfrom cable stray capacitance and leakage are com-pensated for by means of compensation wires in thesensor cable. The sensors are equipped with a unionnut for mounting. The screened sensor cable is at-tached to the sensor. The sensor is connected to theTCU by a snap fit strip connector.

Extension cables up to max. 50 meters are available. The extension cable is equipped with strip connectorsor plugs in both ends.

Temperature is measured by a platinum resistancethermometer, the cell constant is measured from aresistor. Both of these are located in the sensor andconnected with a 4-wire connection. Temperaturecompensation is performed in software, and a versatileprogram of temperature compensation algorithms isavailable.

More detailed information on each of the 4600 and4700 series sensors used with the Dual Channel TCU3200 can be found in the Data Sheets, at the end ofthis manual.

1.3. Temperature compensationConductivity calculation is based on the "raw" conduct-ivity TCU, the actual (= measured) temperature, andthe selected reference temperature. Conductivity resultis then calculated according to the selected temperaturecompensation.

Ultrapure water – water with conductivity of 5…10µS/cm or lower at 25°C – requires special attention. Inthis conductivity range, the conductivity of the water it-self (arising from autoprotolysis) cannot be neglected,as it adds to the conductivity of all other ions presentin the electrolyte. The temperature dependences of thedifferent ions combine in such a way as to invalidateany standard temperature compensation. Severalsubstances must be considered: neutral salts, strongor weak acid, strong or weak base, etc. Only neutralsalts have no effect on the autoprotolysis of water, andtherefore the temperature compensation must be selec-ted to fit the actual application.

1.4. Cable compensationAt low conductivities the effect of cable stray capacit-ance and leakage becomes significant. Depending oncable length, the actual conductivity and the measuringfrequency, an additional amount of conductivity will beadded to the reading.

The built-in cable compensator measures the errorsignal and compensates for it. Thus the reading is in-dependent of cable length at any conductivity down to0.055 µS/cm, including the ultrapure water level.

The orthogonal-symmetrical cable, used with series4600 and 4700 sensors, also compensates for themagnetic coupling between the wires to the current orvoltage electrodes, thereby achieving an accurateresult even at very high conductivities and with longcables.

2. Installation2.1. Installation notesImportant issues when planning TCU installation:• Whether mounted on a wall, in a panel or onto a

piping or cable tray, the place should be free of vi-brations and mechanically shocks should not occur.

• Make sure that there is no potential differencebetween sensor and TCU! If TCU is mounted on acable tray, the cable tree should be electrically con-nected to the process piping. Make sure there is nopotential difference between the protective groundand the process piping and/or TCU mounting site.Look out for ground loop currents that can cause afluctuating or faulty reading.

• Protect the instrument from downpour. If necessaryuse a Protection Shield.

• Protect the instrument from excessively high or lowtemperatures and from direct sunlight.

• Minimize the length of sensor cable as much aspossible.

• Protect the sensor cable from mechanical impactand excessive high or low temperatures.

Important issues when planning sensor installation:• Choose the sensor mounting location so that there

are no air bubbles or pockets. Air will lower thereading and cause an unstable signal!

• Pay attention to pipe diameter when choosing theinstallation site for sensors with external electrodes(see Fig. 13). If the pipe diameter is too small, theelectrodes will take interference from the pipe walls.

• Mount the sensor at a place where it is protectedfrom mechanical impact and can be accessed andextracted from the process for service.

• Always install the sensor so that the temperaturesensor or sensor opening faces the incoming liquidflow.

2.7. Mounting the sensorThe sensor should be mounted at a place where therewill be no occurrence of air pockets or bubbles. Air willlower the reading and cause an unstable signal. SeeFig. 14 for information on the different installation loca-tions.

Make sure to install the sensor in the correct positionrelative to the flow. An arrow label (Fig. 12) indicatesthe position of the sensor:• external electrode: Pt 1000 facing the incoming flow• internal electrodes: sensor opening facing the incom-

ing flowExample: if the sensor is mounted in a pipe section

with upward flow, make sure that the Pt 1000 / sensoropening is on the underside.

Also pay attention to pipe diameter when choosingthe installation site for sensors with external electrodes. If the pipe diameter is too small, the electrodes will takeinterference from the pipe walls.

Page 14: Valmet Dual Conductivity Measurement Series 3200

Preferred mounting:• A: Directly in an upstream pipe.• B: Directly in an elbow between a horizontal and an

upstream pipe. Horizontal mounting is recommen-ded, with sensor pointing towards incoming flow.

• C: Using a measuring chamber connected across apump.

Alternative mounting:• D: Using a measuring chamber connected between

two different places of an upstream pipe. In this caseit may be necessary to install a throttle plate in orderto gain enough flow through the measuring chamber.

• E:This installation will prevent the signal from goingto zero in case the pipe runs empty. It may minimizethe appearance of air bubbles around the sensor.

• F, G: Installation in a downstream pipe is generallynot recommended if the pipe can run empty. If thesensor must be installed in a downstream pipe itmay help to keep the pipe filled by installing a throttleplate just after the measuring point.

Unsuitable locations:• H, I, K: Avoid these installations!

Mounting of measuring chamber:• Mount the measuring chamber in a vertical position,

with an upward flow direction.• Use short connecting pipes.• Insulate piping and measuring chamber to minimize

heat loss.• If connecting over a pump, make sure the pump has

enough capacity.• Shut-off valves are recommended so that the sensor

can be removed for service without shutting downthe process.

• When using valves to control the flow through themeasuring chamber, keep the inlet valve fully openand throttle the flow with the outlet valve.

4.4. mA outputOutput select, alternatives: Off, Process value-A/B,PV 0-x-∞, PV without TC (temperature compensation),Temperature.

Low / High limit: Set the values corresponding to the4 mA and 20 mA current signal for the selected vari-able. For UPW set-up conductivity in µS, for standardset-up in mS.

If set Off, the high limit sets a fixed output current, with 0 as 4 mA and 100 as 20 mA. In this case the lowlimit is not used.

PV 0-x-∞ compresses the output current. Low limitis not used.

If the measured temperature is sent to an mA output, note that the output range is not automatically repro-grammed if the temperature unit is changed (under"System"). For example, if the low and high limit areset to the range 0…250°C, changing the temperatureunit to °F gives an output range of 0…250°F whichcorresponds to -18…121°C.

4.5. AlarmsSettings made in Alarms menu are valid for all set-ups.

Alarm select, alternatives for alarm triggering:• Off• Process Value-A/B: Process value from the indicated

sensor.• PV-A/B without TC: Process value from indicated

sensor with no temperature compensation.• USP<645>, sensor A/B: USP (United States Phar-

macopoeia) requires that the conductivity of pharma-ceutical water without temperature compensationbe monitored and it must be below a certain limit. The level at which the alarm must be triggered isdependent on water temperature according to Table1. Temperature compensation is automatically setOFF for the channel in question.

• Temperature-A/B: Temperature measured by theindicated sensor.

Alarm type, alternatives:• Maximum / Minimum NO; NO = Normally Open, relay

contact is open during non-alarm and closed duringalarm.

• Maximum / Minimum NC; NC = Normally Closed, relay contact is closed during non-alarm and openduring alarm.

Alarm limit: Set the alarm limit in the selected unit.Important: If the temperature unit is changed, the usermust reprogram the set alarm limit for a temperature-triggered alarm! The set temperature limit is not auto-matically recalculated. For example, if the alarm limitis set to 65°C and the unit is changed to °F, the alarmpoint will be 65°F which corresponds to 18°C.

Alarm display flash: When set On, the display back-light will flash whenever any alarm is activated.

4.6. SystemSettings made in System menu are valid for all set-ups.

Sensor A/B mode: Select here how the TCU will dis-play results from the sensors connected to it:• A/– : TCU only displays the result from sensor A.• –/B : TCU only displays the result from sensor B.• A/B : TCU displays the measurement result, sensor

status, selected conductivity unit and measuredtemperature from both sensors.

Contrast adjust: Use the up/down arrow keys to adjustdisplay contrast.

Backlight: Display backlight can be set on or off.

Language: Choose the display language from theavailable options. Note that the language will changeimmediately.

Conductivity unit: Available units are µS/cm, µS/m,mS/cm or mS/m.

Temperature unit: Available units: °C or °F. When thetemperature unit is changed, the displayed temperaturevalue will be automatically recalculated using the selec-ted unit before it appears on the display.

Note that when the temperature unit is changed, theset temperature alarm and mA output range must bereprogrammed to the correct units by the user – theyare not automatically reprogrammed!

HART mode: Choose the mode for HART communic-ation. Alternatives are Read/write, Read only or Off.

HART version: Version 6 or 5.

Poll address: Set here the device address for HARTcommunication.

Passwords set: This function contains five submenusthat allow the user to protect different operations witha password. Passwords can be set for accessing themenu, sensor settings, outputs, alarm settings or sys-tem menu. Each of these can have different oridentical passwords, as necessary.

When the user selects a password-protected opera-tion, the TCU prompts for the password and will notproceed unless the correct password is given.

Damping settings: Allows the user to filter the incom-ing measurement signal. The damping value (seconds)sets the filtering period; if damping value is set to zero,"Damping disabled" is active.
