INTRODUCTION

Stress is a part of day-to-day living of every individual. The college

students may experience stress in meeting the academic demands, people on the

job, business men may suffer stress to reach office in time and to complete the

projects on time and even the house hole ladies may experience stress in

managing the home affairs and to look for the maid servant. The reasons for the

stress differ from person to person. The stress people experience should not be

necessarily treated as harmful. An optimum amount of stress can always act as

an energizer or motivator and propel people to apply the efforts and complete

the work. But a high level of stress can be serious threat to the personality trails

of the individual and can cause physiological and social problems. Every human

being has its own understanding of stress, because all demands of adaptability

do evoke the stress phenomenon. “everybody knows what stress is and yet

nobody knows what it is”.

The term stress has been used in so many different contexts that there is

confusion regarding the exact meaning of the term.

Stress is any condition that disturbs normal functioning.

Stress is a non-specific response of the body to any demand.

Stress can be of three types: anticipatory, current, and residual stress.

Anticipatory stress is one’s response to expected stress. It is useful in moderate

amount because it prepares once body and mind for events that are about to

happen. Such stress increases sharpness and motivation. Thus anticipatory stress

can be positive.

Current stress occurs during an experience. Current stress, if harnessed

effectively, is vital for optimal performance.

Residual stress occurs after the experience has passed.

Determinants of stress

  Personality characteristics

  Role conflict

  Absence of social support

  Role over load

  Role incompatibility

Two major aspects

Stress includes two major aspects-stressors and strain

Stressor related to many factor within the individual or from the external

environment which is conducive to stress. Stressor are either episodic

distruption or chronic condition which causes one’s automatic nervous system

and endocrine gland system to disrupt one’s normal biophysical equilibrium in

preparing one fight flight. Stressor is also defined a s a factor which produces

stress.

Strain is the state of being stressed: and it can be physiological or behavioural:

it is by definition an indicator of ill health of the individual. In other words, stressor usually refers to environmental stimulus and the term strain to

individual response.

Stress And Job performance :

Stress can be either helpful or harmful to job performance depending on job

level. When there is no stress, job challenges are absent and performance tends

to be low. As stress increases performance teds to increase, because stress helps

a person call up encourages employees to respond to challenges. Eventually,

stress reaches a plateau that corresponds approximately with a persons top day-

to-day performance capability. At this point additional stress tends to produce

no more improvement.

Finally if stress becomes too great, it turns to be a destructive force.

Performance begins to decline at some point because excess stress interferes

with performance. An employee loses the ability to cope; she or he becomes

unable to make decisions and exhibits erratic behaviour.

Typical causes of stress on the job:

  Work overload

  Time pressure

Poor quality of supervision’insecure job climate

  Insecure job climate.

Inadequate authority to match the responsibilities

  Risk conflict and ambiguity

Difference between company and employee value

  Frustration

discussed. The researcher methodology has many dimensions and research

methods to constitute a part of the research methodology. It is necessary for the

researcher to design the methodology for his problem as it may differ from

problem to problem. Before starting any research a preliminary plan has to be

drawn out. The aim of the study and available resources should be understood atthe outside. The research is based upon the data collected from both primary

and secondary data.

Sampling and sampling technique:

Small representatives of the universe is usually called the sample which is

technically selected through a sampling technique. In this study a sample size of

50 employees is considered.

Sampling method :

In this study investigation selected simple random method of sampling.

Research design :

Researcher has selected explorative research design for the purpose of

research project. It helps to do a detail study of the subject. Tools of data collection:

Primary data :

Under the primary source, questionnaire and interview schedule is used to

collect the data. Besides the employees would have difficulty in understanding

the terms used and responses may not be independent of each other.

Considering these factors primary data has been collected from the employees

with the help of questionnaire.

Secondary data :

It can be selected through official records, books, journals, internet etc.

Limitation of the study:

The resources directly related to the topic are limited.

The deep interaction with employees is not possible .

Conclusion

Optimum level of stress makes the workers to do their work regularly

and also helps to keep them alert. So the organisations, which keep the

stress to an optimum tolerable level will produce good results rather than

organisation which refers absolutely stress free atmosphere. Stress affects

employees at all levels and types of job, some feel stress everywhere.

People even undergo stress when a car runs at stop signal and almost hitsor when a shadowy figures chases down a dark sheet. When something

like that happens, we become anxious ,tense and fearful. Stress involves

physiological and psychological respose to excessive and usually

stimulation and threatening event in the environment.

This particular study shows that work overload, demand for high

performance, job insecurity, adopt new technologies, time pressure, risk

conflicts, lack of coordination between employees and management

causing for work stress. Stress is not a simple aspect. It may affect both

employees and organisation. It may chance to reduce the performance of

employees.
