ir. ton Venhoeven
Ton Venhoeven (b. 1954) graduated cum laude from the Technical University of Delft in architecture and urban planning. He founded VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism in 1995.
Venhoeven not only has a background in the business of design and engineering, but also in government and academia. In 2008 he was appointed Chief Government Advisor on Infrastructure , a function he held until 2012. In this position, Venhoeven advised the Dutch National government on sustainable design quality of infrastructural, urban and regional plans. Projects ranged from improvements in National highways and widening rivers for flood prevention to integration of different mobility networks in multimodal node development, transit oriented development and integrated urban and regional planning.
From 2005 until 2009, Venhoeven was Professor of Architectural History and Theory at Eindhoven University of Technology. He focused his research on improving sustainability of urban networks and cities and developing the related architectural principles. Today, Venhoeven is Chair of the European ‘TIILUP’ network (Transport Infrastructure Integrated with Land-Use Planning), Chair of the ‘Community of Practice Infrastructure’ and board member of the Research Department, both initiatives of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects.
Venhoeven has a keen interest in integrating urban developments with care and cure aspects, particularly urban planning within the context of aging societies. He is a well-known expert in this field, giving lectures in many countries dealing with aging society issues. Venhoeven is a member of the Advisory Board Dutch Centre for Health Assets, part of TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Knowledge).
Venhoeven is a sought-after architect, urban planner and consultant, working for international public and private organizations, advising on smart city developments, integrated planning (‘Dutch Approach’), multimodal mobility networks, transit orientated development and strategic planning issues related to care and cure. With his extensive network of experts in different fields, and with his broad and interdisciplinary experience, Venhoeven has been leading several Dutch delegations on urban development missions abroad, working with local stakeholders on a range of challenging urban issues.
Ton Venhoeven has authored several books, such as The Mobile City (De Mobiele Stad, with Thijs van den Boomen, NAi Publishers, 2012), Station Centraal, (with Koen van Velsen, NAi Publishers, 2010) and The Wonderful World of VenhoevenCS (Jap Sam Books, 2009).

VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism is a well-known innovative Dutch design office for sustainable, integrated, and smart architecture, urban development and infrastructure. The office has an international portfolio of designs, research and consultancy projects and is recognized with numerous publications, awards and exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. We are active in a broad range of fields: In architecture, we design residential projects, office and utility buildings, sports, culture and leisure facilities, care and cure accommodations, schools and infrastructural projects such as bridges and tunnels. On a larger scale, we are active from strategic planning and transit-orientated development to master planning and urban design. On a smaller scale, we design interiors and furniture and we take part in art exhibitions and theatre productions. In our design practice we work in interdisciplinary teams. We have access to an international network of top specialists in fields such as energy, environment, health, infrastructure and mobility, water management, regional economic development, (social) geography, city branding, leisure, (public) art, landscape, nature and (metropolitan) agriculture, and construction and buildings physics and cost management. These include experts from business, knowledge institutes and government organizations. Depending on the demands of specific assignments we compose the optimal teams.
We are used to integrating ideas and initiatives from citizens and users in all our designs. We consider participatory planning to be a powerful tool to create value for everybody.
