- In other words, verbals look like they are verbs. But sorry, they really function as NOUN, ADJECTIVE, or as ADVERB.
V E R B A L S
- A gerund is a verbal that ends with –ing and functions as a noun.
Form:
base form of verb + -ing = gerund
1. GERUND
- An infinitive is a verbal that functions as a noun and is formed with
to + base form of the verb
2. Infinitive
- to + write = to write (infinitive)
My goal is to write.(as subjective complement)
Infinitive example 2:
-A participle is a verbal that functions as an adjective.
-It can be in present participle or in past partciple.
3. Participle
-Present participle always ends with -ing.
-Past participle usually ends with –ed, -d, -t, -en, or –n.

A swollen eye is God’s way of telling you to improve yourself.
Past Participle example 2:
Determine if the given sentence contains a gerund, infinitive, or participle. 20 seconds analyzing before giving the final answer.
