GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING FOR A VERIFICATION TO SUBSTITUTE TEACH
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO WORK AS A CERTIFIED SUBSTITUTE
TEACHER?
1. The holder of a valid P.E.I. Teacher’s Certificate may accept day-to-day substitute assignments as well as contract assignments (over 20 consecutive days) in Island public K to 12 schools. 2. Certified teachers on a part-time teaching assignment may work as a substitute teacher accepting assignments throughout the day or on the days when they are not otherwise employed under a contract.
3. Certified teachers on an approved leave such as a maternity leave as well as certified teachers on retirement from a PEI school board may be authorized to substitute for a teacher at the certified rate in all P.E.I. public school boards.
[Retired teachers are encouraged to check with the PEI Teacher’s Federation to determine the number of days in which they may substitute teach without impacting their pension.]
3. You are eligible to work as a certified substitute teacher from the effective date as noted on your PEI Teacher’s Certificate. However, you must apply to the employing education authority initially and for each subsequent school year to insure that you are set up on the substitute teacher call centre systems used by the education authority. 4. Teachers who hold a valid license from outside of Prince Edward Island, or who are eligible to hold a PEI teacher's license MUST apply for a PEI teacher’s license in order to be eligible to work as a certified substitute teacher in Island public schools.
5. The suspension or revocation by the Minister or the voluntary surrender or retirement of a teacher’s license which the Minister believes resulted from concerns about the teacher and the safety of children or other persons will automatically result in the cancellation of an eligibility to substitute teach.
How do I Contact the Employer(s)? While you are waiting to receive your Verification of Eligibility as a Substitute Teacher, you should contact one or both of Island education authorities where you intend to work in order to start the employment process with the employer. The education authority will require additional documentation such as the original of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen, your Bank Direct Deposit information etc.
