About Silvered Glass

For many years, glass manufac-turers had been trying to produce silvered glassware using a number of compounds; early pieces used mercury amalgams based on tech-niques used for silvering mirrors, but these proved unsuitable.

Silvered glass was first made in the 1840s and patented in England in 1849 and in the USA in 1855. From 1860 onwards, the main production of silvered glass came from glass-works in Bohemia.

Methods of Manufacture

Silvered glass is double-walled glassware with a silver coating inside the walls.

Each manufacturer has its own recipe which is a closely guarded secret. The silvering liquid is poured into the space between the walls of the glass vessel through a hole in the bottom, and it adheres to the glass. The residue is drained off, the inside dried, and some form of seal is placed over the hole. Verreum uses the highest quality 99.99% pure silver and the seal used in the bottom is stainless steel to keep the inside safe from humidity or any kind of climate changes.

Verreum was founded in 2009 in Prague, Czech Republic, by Pavel Weiser. The name Verreum comes from a combination of ”Verre” –glass in French- and ”Um” –craftsmanship in Czech-. As the name suggests, Verreum aims at reviving tradi-tional glass making craftsmanship, and the focus of Pavel Weiser’s vision is the revival of silvered glass making, a forgotten technique in Europe, which Verreum wished to re-invent, coupling new technology and a new design language.

Verreum collaborates with both Czech and international designers for the creation of its products, and besides the production of its own unique silvered glass with glass blowing facilities in Novy Bor, cooperates with the rest of the Czech glassworks with the mission of sustaining the glass making tradition of Bohemia.

Verreum was also a co-organiser of the European project ”Glass is Tomorrow”, whose aim is to promote cooperation among glass-makers and designers across Europe.

As of 1st January 2013, Verreum is an enterprise of GGV Design Partners together with the Turkish brand GAIA&GINO. Gaye Cevikel, who is the creator of GAIA&GINO, manages the creative direction, sales and marketing of Verreum.

AURORACoffee SetSilvered glass, double walled glass and woodDesign by Defne Koz & Marco Susani2013Aurora consists of 3 handmade different sizes of coffee cups in double walled opal white gradient glass with 3 different shapes of silvered glass saucers and a cookie platter in silvered glass. The set is completed with an American walnut wood tray.

Defne & Marco’s inspiration:You, me, the smell of coffee. A good morning. What can we do to make this morning even better? Maybe a couple of precious, magic, shiny, silver cups for our coffees? Maybe a tray to hold them together? Maybe a tall cup to hold the small precious espresso high on a pedestal, building a monument to it?

BRUNOTable LampBlown glass and metallic coated glassDesign by Karim Rashid2013Bruno consists of 2 handmade table lamps, in clear glass body / silver coated glass shade; opal white glass body/bronze coated glass shade.

Karim’s inspiration:My goal with this lamp was to expose the simple beauty of the materials that house the light. The glass base rises upward toward a metal diffuser. The light itself is floating inside, hidden, but illuminates the base out of the opening on top. Harmony between illumination, material and form are what makes this object simple yet special.

CHADOTea Set*Silvered glass, colored glass and brassDesign by Sebastian Herkner2013With Chado teaset, Sebastian Herkner brought back the archaic shapes of middle ages into the new light. Chado consists of 1 handmade silvered glass tea cup, 1 cookie plate, 1 blown glass teapot in gray, 1 blown glass milk jug in gray and a handmade brass tray.

* Sold as a set

Sebastian’s inspiration:The tea set Chado for Verreum is designed for the celebration of drinking tea. The origin of its name Chado is based on the Japanese designation of tea ceremony. It is a set of archaic and simple designed objects consisting of a tea cup, milk jug, tea pot, cookie bowl and a metal tray. My aim was to concentrate on the materials like silvered glass and colored frosted glass combined with marble and brass. Every object of this set is made of its most suitable material. The cup for example is made of double walled silvered glass, the tray of metal spanned brass. Chado is created for a ritual.

DROPSVasesSilvered glassDesign by Arik Levy2013Drops is a very innovative typology for the cacti or flowers we use everywhere in our homes and offices. Cactus as a flower is also believed to decrease the magnetic field when used next to electronic equipment. Drops come in three versions, one cave, two caves and three caves and in two colors: silver and bronze.

Arik’s inspiration:I was always fascinated with the quicksilver drops and remember that when the old thermometer broke on the floor I was looking for these drops. The amazing surfaces tension and reflection as well as the sensation of it as if it is still liquid. Juxta-positioning the different sizes together like a table sculpture installation reflecting one into the other as well as the surrounding environment is a delight. Planting cacti or flowers into the holes gives life to the installation as well as generous reflections of colors and forms. Enjoy.

INFLUENCECandleholder Collection*Silvered blown glassDesign by Arik Levy2012Influence is a play with different shapes, each in a harmonious geometry. It comes as a set of 5 candle holders in two color versions, silver and lime green.

* Sold as a set of 5

Arik’s inspiration:Candlesticks are around us all the time and usually set on the table for decoration and light. With this collection I wanted to create a landscape of elements that joint together as one form, influence the previous and following forms. They stand as a mini architecture and allow arranging different skylines, as one likes. When candles are installed and lit the dancing flames will reflect on the diagonal surfaces and animate bright light spots.

Throughout his career he has sought to bring design to the masses by creating affordable, approachable and beautiful objects. Karim has redefined several once-stagnant markets, i.e.: home accessories (Dirt Devil Kone Vac), cleaning products (Method cleaning products) and water filtration (Bobble).

SEBASTIAN BERGNE Bergne set up his London design studio after graduating from The Royal College of Art in 1990. He has since established an impressive body of work, ranging from corkscrews to kettles, frying pans to pencil dice. Bergne’s work shows less of a signature style, more a quest for appropriate new solutions to diverse design problems, whether working on bespoke projects or anonymous consumer products. His achievements have been widely recognized with international design awards, frequent publication, exhibi-tions and inclusion in permanent collec-tions such as The Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Design Museum (London). Bergne shares his knowledge and experience through guest speaking, lecturing and jury participation.

SEBASTIAN HERKNER Sebastian Herkner, born 1981, studied Product Design at Academy of Arts and Design Offenbach in Germany.In spring 2010, his occasional table Bell-Table was presented in New York in the collection of Spanish manufacturer ABR, and it also received the red dot award 2010. Following studies at the Art Center Europe in Switzerland he gained a distinction in Industrial Design in 1991.After a stint in Japan where he consolidated his ideas producing products and pieces for exhibitions, Levy returned to Europe where he contributed his artistry to another field –contemporary dance and opera by way of set design.The creation of his firm then meant a foray back to his first love, art and industrial design, as well as other branches of his talents.
