The 2019 NAVHDA Invitational was a success. Thanks to the volunteers who helped Tracey Nelson and her crew—they did a great job. I

want to thank my fellow judges for giving their time in the field and at the water. The set-up for the event starts on Tuesday before the test and continues for several days. Thanks to the Buckeye Chapter and Herb Chris-tian for pulling off a great event again—nothing works better than a well-oiled machine. Congratulations to those of you who passed and received your Versatile Champion title! This month is the beginning of a great hunting season after all that hard work you have put in this past summer.

Our versatile dogs are bred to do all parts of the hunt. We train them to develop their abilities. We also train them to work with us as a team—that’s where the cooperation and obedience come in. Now, as hunting season opens or has opened across the country, we can focus on our goal: enjoying safe, productive days in the fields, woods and waters with our great dogs.

So, let’s all pack our bags and gear and go hunting. Gone Hunting, Dave

VC THUNDERHILLS OBSIDIAN, A FEMALE GERMAN WIREHAIRED POINTER,

OWNED BY JAMES LEWIS AND HANDLED AT THE 2017 INVITATIONAL BY NATHAN STEEBER.

You’ve just made a nice on-the-wing shot on a flushing bird. The bird drops and your dog even marks the drop of the bird. You release your dog

for the retrieve. What’s wrong…the dog is searching ev-erywhere but can’t find the bird. Whether in the forested ruffed grouse woods or the prairies, we’ve all seen this scenario over and over. Why?

After my three-part series on scent in the June, July & August 2017 issues of the Versatile Hunting Dog, I’ve had several people ask me why their dog can point a bird at 100 feet but run right over a dead bird. Although odor chemistry is complex and poorly understood, let’s see if we can answer this question.

During the process of a bird being flushed and then shot, several things happened to the bird scent. First, when flushed, the bird undergoes what we refer to as wind wash. That means that the combination of the sev-eral ingredients that create body scent are washed from the bird during flight. This includes the dead skin cells, the small pieces of capsules that surround new feathers, dust and the ingredient that combines them all… the uropygial gland oil. The uropygial gland is used when the bird is preening. The heat from the body of the live bird allows the above concoction to rise and create the scent cloud.

However, when the heart stops and the bird is dead, the body begins to cool immediately. So, most of the ingredients of the scent cloud have been washed away during flight and the remaining ingredients are rendered useless. Therefore, no body scent from a dead bird.

And, here’s another contributor to the reason your dog can’t find the dead bird. Also a contributor to the scent cloud is breath. Have you ever noticed that your dog will find a wounded bird much more quickly than

a dead bird? A wounded bird has lost most of its body scent through wind wash, however, it’s still breathing. Birds breathe through both their mouth and nostrils. Bacteria in the mouth create scent. When the bird stops breathing, the scent from the mouth stops.

Another point to keep in mind regarding loss of the scent cloud are electrical signals. Through a heartbeat, the body operates on electricity. In fact, everything a body does is controlled by electrical signals running through the body. When those electrical signals stop, everything stops; including scent.

Hopefully, this short piece on scent will help you un-derstand why your bird dog, the one with an incredible nose, can’t find a dead bird. That’s a freshly killed dead bird. A few days after the death of the bird, putrefaction begins. That’s the bacteria in the intestines beginning the decomposition of the body. Yes, scent will now be present and your dog may find the bird…but not in the condition you want for table fare.

Regarding your bird dog, I like what we refer to as a broke dog. For safety reasons, we don’t want our dog chasing a flushing bird. Usually, a broke dog must re-main steady to the flush and shot. I don’t want my dog chasing; however, I will allow liberal movement to mark the flight of the bird and the drop. This helps immensely in locating a dead bird.

ROBO-DOGby Rick Smith & Sharon Potter

Have you ever seen a dog that goes through the motions of hunting, does everything

right, rarely ever makes a mistake, yet has no style or enthusiasm for the work? Just going through the motions, they work like some sort of Robo-Dog, mechanically and me-thodically, and when on point they stand perfectly still, but with no in-tensity. There’s no joy in what they’re doing; it’s just a job. If you look at a photograph of such a dog on point, it would look like a picture of a dog just standing still. There is very lit-tle - if any - animation, the expres-sion is pretty ho-hum, and the tail is relaxed. The dog is doing what’s expected from a training standpoint, but doesn’t look the least bit excited or happy to be doing it.

It’s not unlike people and jobs. You know that old saying, “If you love what you do for a living, you’ll never work a day in your life”? If you enjoy your job and look for-ward to doing it every day, it just doesn’t feel like work. But if you go to work and watch the clock all day just waiting for quitting time, you count the hours until the weekend, and are doing the job because it’s a paycheck and you have to do it, then it’s just a job, with no joy in it. We

don’t know about you, but that’s not how we want our dogs to work.

So, how do dogs get that way? There are two things from a train-ing standpoint that can and will take the style and enthusiasm out of a dog: pressure and overtraining. Of course, other things like poor condi-tion, heat, exhaustion, and the like can make a dog look uninterested, but in those cases, the dog usually isn’t doing too much right. We’re talking about the dog that has got it all - except enthusiasm.

Pressure and overtraining can go hand in hand, a “cause and effect” sort of relationship, or they can work individually.

Pressure in a training situation can be physical (a leash, collar, e-collar, checkcord, hands) or mental (when a dog feels the need to think and find a way out of an uncomfortable situation). Even birds can cause a level of pressure, depending on the dog’s mental state. Of course, we need some level of pressure to train, but it’s carrying the pressure beyond training or learning and into venting anger and frustration that sucks the joy out of a dog.

Two of the most common pressure-related issues are overcorrecting and poor timing. Overcorrecting hap-

pens when we give a physical cue and are heavy-handed with it, using a lot more than is needed to get the desired response. It can be some-thing as simple as a lead correction - for example, when a very light tug would have done the job, but instead a hard jerk is used and it throws the dog off balance. It can also be an e-collar correction on too high a set-ting, which is why we recommend that you always use the minimum, go up a bit if needed, then promptly dial back down as soon as the cor-rect response is given. This keeps a dog working at the lowest possible level, giving the dog a chance to do things right rather than scaring it into submission. There are few things that will knock the style out of a dog faster than bad e-collar use, and it can ruin a dog permanently.

Isn’t pressure the same thing as overtraining? Yes and no. We obvi-ously use pressure during training, and as we said above, it certainly can be overused. That’s where pressure and overtraining go hand-in-hand. However, overtraining can happen without the overuse of pressure.

So exactly what is overtraining? Simply put, it’s micromanaging ev-ery single move the dog makes, and includes overhandling. Every move

is directed and dictated. If you have a job and have a boss, imagine how much you would come to hate it if your boss never left you alone to complete a task. Rather, he leans over your shoulder constantly, mi-cromanaging every move you make, and criticizing every effort. We don’t know about you, but we’d likely be searching for a new job with a

less-critical boss. It’s not much dif-ferent with dogs - except they can’t quit and go find a new job with a better boss.

Overtraining translates to over-handling, too. A classic example of overhandling (and we’ve probably all seen this) is the handler who turns the dog loose to hunt and then is yelling and whistling and giving

arm signals non-stop, telling the dog to go toward that tree line or that patch of cover and now check out that clump of grass over there and now go over to this one ... and on and on and on.

This kind of handling shows no partnership or teamwork and no trust in the dog’s nose and ability to find birds, and is usually the result

of handler insecurity or inexperi-ence. Then, if the dog actually does stumble across a bird, the next thing that happens is a string of loud, “Whoa... whoa... whoa” repeated over and over again, even though the dog isn’t moving.

A really big sign of overtrain-ing happens at home. A polite dog that’s a good citizen is something we should all strive for. However, there are dogs that rarely ever get any time off, meaning every second that the owner’s around, the dog is being told what to do, where to be, how to move, and is corrected constantly. They’re told to go lie in their dog bed or crate, only allowed to move from that spot when told, and have no freedom to just be part of the family.

While a well-trained dog is a joy to have around, the overtrained dog is seen more as a possession or a tool. It’s a lot like that old saying that children should be seen and not heard. While we want our children to be polite and respectful and we sure don’t want our kids to run wild and be rude, we also don’t want them to be invisible. Same goes for our dogs. Polite and respectful is good. We like to see each dog’s per-sonality show through and interact with it while still retaining bound-aries of behavior we’ve set. But the overtrained dog lives from correc-tion to correction or command to command, and rarely does its per-sonality show up for fear of yet an-other correction.

So where do we draw the line be-tween polite and respectful and over-trained? The polite and respectful dog looks up to you as a leader and friend. The overtrained dog looks at you like a drill sergeant or prison warden. The dog’s attitude will re-

flect your attitude. As we said, in the field, this shows up as a dog that goes through the motions with no style or enthusiasm. They lack desire and the spirit to even try to do anything without direction, because they feel like they’re always wrong.

One point we’d like to make in clarification: Different dogs and breeds have different styles. Don’t expect a slower, close-working breed to show the same intensity and style as an Open All Age point-er or setter. Neither is better nor worse than the other - they’re just different personalities.

Also keep in mind that a softer, more sensitive dog can end up be-coming overtrained and downtrod-den a lot faster and easier than a tough minded, high-energy dog.

Training and hunting with a good bird dog of any breed requires a team effort. Treat your dog fairly, teach it what is expected and what the job description is, and then trust it to do the job it was trained for - let it go be a real dog, not a Robo-Dog.

When the two of you head to the field together, the dog’s job is to go where you go, find and point birds, and bring ‘em back after you shoot them. You each have your job to do out there. Trust your dog’s nose, don’t micromanage and interfere, and if you’ve done your homework, you’ll have a winning team.

As we said at the beginning, if you love what you do for a living, you’ll never work a day in your life. That goes for our dogs, too, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they Iove their job.

I felt I needed this experience in my life, to test my dogs under the NAVHDA system, and also to en-courage American breeders to do more work with

their dogs. To my knowledge, there are only two Wirehaired Vizsla in the US as of now who passed the NAVHDA Utility; both are Zöldmális (Abel and Szin-va, both with a Prize I). So I decided to enter Zöldmáli Extreme (three years old) and Délceg (two years old) for the NAVHDA Utility Test and Zöldmáli Kolibri for the Natural Ability test in Wisconsin, to show that it’s even possible to do it coming from Europe. Délceg and Kolibri are already owned by Eric Wallendal and Me-gan Nimmo Wallendal, Pivot Kennel, but since I was training them until that point, I didn’t feel it would be a problem for me to handle them in a test in May.

When joining NAVHDA, you get a rules book, where you can read about all the expectations of the tests. You can also find this info at www.navhda.org. Unlike the European rule books, NAVHDA doesn’t specify exactly how things are judged, and what can bring your score down. They do hold Handlers Clin-ics, where they explain these fine points for every-one interested. But Handlers Clinics are held only a few times and locations a year, so being less than a week in the US, I never had the chance to attend one. I believe that not having specific rules for judging, it gives a greater freedom for the judges to evaluate and interpret a situation, which is often not advanta-geous, or, at least, more difficult to prepare for. Also, the fact that you only find out your overall scores at the very end of the test (not knowing what you did right or wrong and not getting any explanation for it) doesn’t give the handler a chance to improve on that test. Besides the Handler Clinic, many local NAVHDA Chapter members train every weekend at the same area where the tests are held. This is a very big advantage. They practice the same exercises, over

and over, that you are expected to perform on test day. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance for that.

I handled two dogs in NAVHDA Utility, and I made the same mistakes with both of them, because I was only told at the very end of the testing day that a simple hand wave, without any words, on a duck search or a water retrieve is considered a command, and every com-mand takes your score down by one point out of four. So when my Vizsla, who is known for his high co-oper-ation check-backs on me from the corners of his eyes 50 meters ahead out in the water to see which way I want him to search, and I waved my hands twice, I was down to a score of 2, and a Prize III. It’s likely he would have continued without any hand wave, but I didn’t know it’s so highly penalized. As I was the only handler with my own two dogs doing the Utility, I didn’t even have the chance to watch how the others were doing it. Quite tough conditions for a first timer. Not to mention the extraordinary humid and hot weather at 36°C. This was topped with Extreme’s tail injury (limber tail or dead tail syndrome), that happened two days before the test. He was in such pain it was questionable he could run on test day. The vet gave him some anti-inflammatory and pain killer but forgot to inform me about the side ef-fect—that it would knock out the dog. So, after Extreme was zonked out on his bed all day on Saturday, I had to make the decision to stop giving him the pain killer and see what happened on Sunday in the test. He was not his usual self, but was quite okay compared to his state from two days before.

Something that I just recently realized is that there are huge differences between the USA, midland Europe (FCI), England, and Scandinavia in terms of what we expect from a pointing dog to do in the field. What one country expects, is a disqualifying fault for the other. And the US finds their system so obvious, that, again, they don’t specify it in their rule books, yet if it’s done

the other way, they might even disqualify a dog. So, in the US, they expect a pointing dog to get in a solid point as soon as the dog smells the bird.

The dog should not move, but the handler walks ahead of the dog, and tries to flush the bird by kicking the grass. It often seems very odd from outside to watch, especially when you have a runner that you try to flush. The dog may only relocate the bird on command. In the test, only pen-raised planted birds are used, but I would really like to see this type of work being efficient on wild birds, who run like hell. Up until now, I was not given a proper ex-planation why this method is desired, but many Amer-icans I spoke to agreed that they would not hunt their dog on wild birds like this. The American system highly penalizes a dog who stalks up to the bird (yet not flush-ing it) or flushing on owner’s command. In FCI, actually, its the other way around, and you are not allowed to go ahead of your dog—the two of you have to flush the bird together, or the dog on command. If the dog is not ‘creeping’ up to the bird and holds the point too firm, it’s penalized. If the dog is not keeping contact with a runner bird, it’s highly penalized. In England and in Scandinavia, the dog is expected to flush the bird on command, mean-

ing after pointing, when the flush command is given, the dog makes a quick move towards the bird to flush it and stays steady afterwards. In Finland, at the very high lev-el, they even expect the dog to come back to the owner from a point and lead the owner back to the bird. All these methods are trainable, but once you’ve trained one, it’s very difficult to train another one for the same dog, especially if you only have a day or two for it. So that was our first big challenge on the test: having two dogs trained and tested under the FCI system and now doing everything the other way around with them.

So, we had two, Extreme and Délceg, tested on that day in Utility, and three dogs were tested in Natural Ability, a GSP and Zöldmáli Kolibri (handled by me) and Zöldmáli Titok, (handled by Tarah Stratchan). First the Utility dogs started, early morning at about 7:30 am, trying to avoid the big heat. Dogs had to work 30 minutes in the field, with handler (with gun), two gunners and three judges. Chukars were planted prior to the run. Extreme and Délceg impressed the judges—both found and pointed four birds, and the birds were shot and retrieved. They both got mostly 4s (max score) for everything in the field (including the retrieves and

On the water, they both got max scores for the heeling exercise and the steadiness by blind, but we were un-lucky with the duck retrieve. I was supposed to stay be-hind the duck blind with a gun, dog sitting steady next to me and a distraction gunner on the side. Duck was thrown after four shots from the opposite side of the pond which was about 70 meters away at least. There were duck decoys on the water that the dog had to ig-nore. Everything went well for Extreme, but when he came out and sat in front of me with the duck, I wanted to take the duck, but he just released one second sooner, and I didn’t get a proper grip and the duck fell out of my hands. I got a 3 for that. It was my mistake.

Délceg, unfortunately, didn’t watch properly where the duck was thrown (as it was pretty far) and as he was swimming out for the ‘forward’ command, he looked back for reassurance (as he didn’t yet see the duck) and I waved my hand ahead, he continued and brought the duck. Only in the end did I find out it cost 1 point down.

Live duck search was the very last exercise. It is every-one’s biggest fear. But I was quite confident about my dogs’ abilities. In this exercise, they choose a big pond with marshy areas and they place a live duck out to the opposite side with a kayak.

You are supposed to send the dog for a search with a command, and, for max score, the dog has to search for 10 minutes and no further command can be given and even the slightest hand wave is considered a command. It doesn’t matter if the dog doesn’t find the duck, it just has to spend the 10 minutes out. All this I know by now from experience, but it’s not written in black and white in the NAVHDA rules book. In Europe, the live duck search means something totally different—there they re-lease a winged duck thrown on the water from your side, and they wait until the duck disappears, and the dog has to follow its track on the water and retrieve it, or chase it to open water until its shot.

With NAVHDA, even though they call it a live duck search, the focus is not on the duck, but on the search, and that the dog searches by itself for 10 minutes in the water. Here, dogs who try to keep in touch with owners and ask for feedback are not appreciated. We practiced this with both Extreme and Délceg for three days before the test on other water surfaces and they were really, really good. As I said, I was very confident about my dogs. We got the chance to go and practice on the test ground on the previous Friday, and that was the plan, but because Extreme had the tail injury on that day and we spent the rest of the day at the vet, we couldn’t make the four-hour drive. I was still confident about their performance, but as they are not machines, they can have their off days, and on their

first go (when it mattered) neither of them swam across to the other side with one go, but started exploring the closer areas and finished sooner than 10 minutes, so a command was needed. Extreme was still not his usual self, because of his tail injury, and even freaked out from a water snake. Délceg did much better—he searched through two islands on both sides, only was given one hand wave, and I expected him to get a 3 or 4 (after Extreme got a 2), but surprisingly he got a 2 as well. Not really sure why. Judges said I gave two commands, but I don’t remember a second. Once the test was over and they were sent back individually for a second round, they both swam across, searched for over 15 minutes and found the ducks. Really annoying to know that they would have done it easily, if we had the chance to practice it once! But overall I was super proud of them, and I believe they made a very good impression on the judges and on the spectators. We got lots of compliments—a very good day for the breed.

Kolibri and Basil (Zöldmáli Titok) accomplished the Natural Ability test with max scores. Basil only started training four days before the test on the Zöldmáli Train-ing Days I ran in Wisconsin. She and her owner never had any former hunting training. It’s quite a big thing that she passed the NA with max score!

For me, NAVHDA has some rules that I just can’t un-derstand. In the NA’s water part, a dummy is thrown in the water twice and for a full score, the pup has to swim in twice, but doesn’t have to retrieve, and no gun fired during this part of the test, so dogs are not tested for gun-shyness in the water, which is a way more difficult (sensitive) situation than taking a gunshot in the field! If your dog only goes in the water if a bird is thrown, you get low scores! For me, it would just go the other way round (and so it does in Hungary). If a dog retrieves a bird from the water (with a shot, proving the dog is not afraid of the gunshot while swimming), it gets full scores. But a dog who just swims but doesn’t retrieve game would fail!

To my knowledge, up until now, only two Wirehaired Vizslas passed the Utility in the USA, both were Zöld-mális, so now there are another two! :) I hope many more will come! This breed needs more dedicated work-ing homes!

It was a great experience, and if there ever will be a next time, I will be more prepared by then!

I’m often asked why I chose a versatile hunting dog. Truth is, I enjoyed hunting over golden retrievers, springer spaniels and Labrador retrievers for many

years before turning to pointing breeds. First, over my Dad’s dogs Duffy I and Duffy II, then over my own flushing breeds. I was too young to hunt in the 1970s but do recall carrying a BB gun while following Dad in the fields watching Duffy I, a dark red golden retriever, cast across the fields. I can also remember spending af-ternoons laying on top of a doghouse with him. Duffy II was a big powerful block-headed black Lab. I had many successful days hunting pheasants and ducks with Duffy II. My Dad and his brother often told stories of their childhood and the fantastic pheasant hunting on family farms in Kenosha County, Wisconsin over their springer spaniel named, of course, Duffy. We did have a pointing breed, briefly. In 1978 Dad was given an Irish Setter. There are many reasons people give away a dog. I learned that year that being a good hunting dog isn’t one of them. So, my early experience with point-ing breeds, the stories about the original Duffy, and memories of Duffy I and II directed me to the flushing breeds when I was able to have my own dogs.

When he hit his mid-70s my dad’s hunts shortened. Keeping up with a flushing dog on a pheasant track wasn’t so easy anymore. During our hunts he started to call it quits before the dogs, my brother, or I were ready to give up. I switched to pointing breeds for one reason, I wanted to extend my dad’s days afield. In 2003 I picked up Uplands Beast (Rex) from Upland Kennels in Stevens Point. I had read about Griffons in a hunting magazine

and was surprised to find a local breeder. Part of my pur-chase agreement required to test Rex in Natural Ability. I joined the North Central Wisconsin Chapter and Rex earned an NA Prize I, 112. Dad was 75 when he met Rex. He had never heard of the breed and certainly had trouble hiding his chuckle and grin when he first saw the bearded beast. By age 79 Dad had come to appreciate Rex and my newest Griff addition Twin Creek Abby. My brother had switched to a German Shorthair, and Dad had several seasons to develop an appreciation for the pointing breeds. Over the course of a few years, and with the help of our North Central Wisconsin NAVH-DA members, Rex developed into a fine Utility Prize II dog. He was a pleasure to hunt with.

I will never forget our November 2009 hunt. Rex was on point; I positioned Dad and my brother and circled around for the flush. A big rooster erupted from the tall grass, Dad swung his 1954 Belgium A5 and dropped the bird with an impressively long shot. As I walked over to release Rex for the retrieve, I no-ticed Dad running towards the downed rooster. I really wanted to show off a finished UT dog. Me: “Hey Dad, easy. Rex will get it.” Dad: “Sorry son, I just got so ex-cited, I’m not sure how many more Roosters I’ll shoot from these old boots!” We all smiled and laughed about it over a cold beer after our hunt. I didn’t know at the time, but it would be his last. Those old boots hang on the kennel door that was Rex’s and is now occupied by Firebirds Electra (Ellie, UT II). That great shot and Dad running a few steps are always vivid in my memory.

Return to Field Trial After Being Treated for

By Sherman O. Canapp, Jr.DVM, MS, CCRT Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons- Small Animal, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

“Jump down syndrome,” or traumatic fragmented me-dial coronoid process, is a condition in the elbow joint that commonly occurs in field trial dogs. Unlike the clas-sic condition of fragmented medial coronoid process (FCP), affecting the elbow joints of skeletally immature large to giant breed dogs, JDS appears to have no age or size limitations. This condition is not a result of genetic elbow dysplasia, but rather a traumatic event.

Dogs with JDS may present with a history ranging from a subtle intermittent off-loading of the forelimb to significant unilateral forelimb lameness. This lame-ness is typically exacerbated with exercise and heavy activity. A small percentage of field trial dogs only experience performance issues, with no obvious lame-ness outside of intense activity. The onset of lameness is insidious and may increase in severity as it persists. Affected dogs often place the carpus (wrist joint) in an exaggerated “turned out” (valgus) position when sitting or standing and circle the forelimb outward and move the elbow away from the midline (circumduct the forearm and abduct the elbow) during the swing phase of the stride.

The history of dogs with JDS typically includes a lack of response to rest and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Many dogs with JDS are mistakenly treated for shoulder pathology because a pain response can be elicited when the shoulder is extended. This pain response likely arises from the elbow because extension maneuver of the shoulder simultaneously extends the el-bow. This places tension in the biceps/brachialis muscle

complex, which then exerts pressure on the medial cor-onoid, an overlying inflamed joint capsule causing the pain response.

To confirm the suspicion of JDS, diagnostics are per-formed starting with basic x-rays. Due to the fact that these are often acute injuries, there may be minimal or even no changes noted on the x-rays. In some chronic cases, however, x-rays may reveal secondary evidence of bony remodeling consistent with early arthritis. Next, advanced diagnostics such as musculoskeletal ultrasound or needle scope/arthroscopy may be used to confirm the injury. Needle scope, also known as ar-throscopy, is the diagnostic test of choice as it allows for confirmation and treatment at the same time.

By performing the procedure arthroscopically (through a key-hole incision using HD camera with high magnification under a very bright light), there is better visualization, so the fragment is not missed. There is also less soft tissue trauma, shorter surgery and hospitalization times, decreased risk of infection, and shorter recovery times in comparison to tradi-tional surgery where the joint is fully opened. When performed arthroscopically, there may also be less chance for arthritis in the future versus when done with traditional open surgery. The arthroscopic treat-ment includes fragment removal and joint resurfacing (through a keyhole incision). The best way to think of the treatment is that we are taking a large pebble out of the shoe. Once the pebble is removed, the rehab and medical management is more effective, and the lame-

ness and pain can resolve. Otherwise, all treatment pri-or to removing the pebble is a “Band-Aid.”

Depending on the severity of cartilage damage and inflammation at the time of the arthroscopy, injections into the joint are very helpful in decreasing inflamma-tion and helping with healing and function. These in-jections may include Hyaluronic Acid (for mild cases), Platelet Rich Plasma (for moderate cases), or stem cell therapy (for more advanced cases).

Following the arthroscopic treatment, rehabilitation therapy is recommended. This includes formal rehab (laser therapy, manual therapy, under water treadmill therapy) and a home rehab program (exercises, PROM, home light therapy with the Canine EdgeLight system, etc.). Typically, the rehab program lasts 3 months fol-lowed by a strengthening and conditioning program of 4-6 weeks. Return to sport and work may begin around 5 months following treatment. It’s important to remem-ber there is no “cookbook” approach to recovery and every patient requires a dedicated rehab plan.

Joint supplements are also recommended long-term to help decrease the progression of arthritis as well as to protect the other joints. The recommended sup-plements include: Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, ASU, and MSM in addition to OMEGA 3 fatty acids.

JUMP DOWN SYNDROME

Dasuquin Advanced and Welactin are the products of choice by Dr. Canapp.

If JDS is left untreated, then the lameness and de-creased performance will continue. In addition, ar-thritis and secondary compensatory issues may occur over time.

Case StudyColby is now a 6-year-old neutered male black Labra-dor Retriever. He is a field trial dog from Pennsylva-nia who presented at Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group (VOSM) in April 2019 for a 2-month history of left forelimb lameness with no traumatic inci-dent associated with the onset of lameness.

The GaitFour Dog objective gait analysis computer program showed that Colby had significant weight-bear-ing lameness at a walk and a trot in the left forelimb (Total pressure Index right forelimb versus TPI left fore-limb). During the palpation portion of the exam, sensi-tivity was noted over the medial coronoid process in the left elbow and moderate sensitivity over the acromion process. Radiographs (x-rays) revealed the left elbow was within normal limits.

Ultrasound showed mild intra-articular changes and minor chronic changes noted within the left elbow (when compared to the right) that have been consistent-ly seen with medial coronoid fragmentation or jump

Page 11: VERSATILE HUNTING DOG...6 Versatile Hunting Dog.navhda.org Otoer 2019 Otoer 2019 Versatile Hunting Dog.navhda.org 7 ROBODO by Rick Smith & Sharon Potter H ave you ever seen a dog that

down syndrome. There was irregular bone margins (when compared to the right) to the medial coronoid process region of the left medial elbow along with minor joint effusion and mild increased intra-articular changes.

Diagnosis and Treatment After close analysis of Colby’s history, exam, gait analysis, and ultrasound results, it was determined that Colby’s lame-ness was contributed to a fragmented medial coronoid pro-cess (suspect jump down syndrome) in the left elbow. We performed a left elbow arthroscopy where we removed the fragment, cleaned up and resurfaced the joint as well ad-ministered a regenerative medicine injection (Stem cells and PRP). This was followed by a rehabilitation therapy pro-gram.

Appropriate warm-ups, cool downs, active and passive stretching, and conditioning programs were recommended long-term. Joint supplements such as the ones mentioned above as well as at home light therapy (Photobiomodulation using the EdgeLight system) were also recommended.

Return to Field TrialFollowing successful treatment and recovery, Colby was giv-en clearance to return to field trial. According to his owner, he is doing extremely well.

“We just started to get him retrieving on land and wa-ter this week (September 2, 2019). All land retrieves, at this point have been from a remote sit while I hold a bumper in front of me,” stated Colby’s owner, John Quinn. “We start-ed at 15 yards a few weeks ago, then 30, now 75. That prevents him from making any hard turns on the pick-up. Next week, we return to field trial training on a limited basis. At this point, I feel that he is fully re-covered from his injuries, but he will need time to get back into shape for full time field trial training and competition.”

SummaryJDS should be considered in highly active dogs with intermittent or persistent fore-limb lameness that do not respond to con-servative management. Advanced diagnos-tics such as needle scope / arthroscopy are able to confirm the injury and treat it at the same time. If diagnosed and treated appro-priately, the probability to return to field trial is very good. Joint supplements, home exercise programs, light therapy, and con-ditioning will allow for the best long-term function of your canine athlete!

Special thanks to Clyde Vetter from Sharp Shooters Kennels for his guidance, patience and superior dog training skills. He helped Maggie and Millie prepare by working with the two of them first-hand.

Chip Bonde, Tim Lewis, and David Nordquist were es-pecially kind and patient with Maggie. You could tell they were very excited to have a Youth Handler that day and went out of their way to make sure she understood what was expected and made her feel really at ease. She walked away from this experience wanting to do more training and handle more dogs in the future. It was a truly great experience that she will not soon forget.

NAVHDA is pleased to team with renowned chef, outdoorsman, and cookbook author Hank Shaw, whose beautiful and tremendously popular website Hunter, Angler, Gardener, Cook (huntgathercook.com) has helped invigorate the recent surge of interest in preparing game. We will be featuring one of Hank's recipes each month, so put on your aprons, sharpen those knives, and set the table!

HOLLY A. HEYSERPlace each duck breast between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound with a rubber mallet, meat mallet or empty wine bottle until the meat is about 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch thick. Do this firmly, but don’t wail on the meat or you will tear it. Trim the cutlets to an even shape if you want.

Pour the stock and wine into a small pot and bring to a simmer. Put a baking sheet in the oven and set it to 180°F, or “warm.”

Heat the duck fat in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Spread the diced bacon out in the pan and fry until crispy. Remove and set aside.

Salt the cutlets well and dust in flour. Sear the cutlets for 1 minute; keep them from curling up with a spatu-la. Flip the cutlets and sear another minute. Remove the cutlets to the baking sheet in the oven. Pour all the accu-mulated fat out of the pan and reserve; be sure to wipe the edge of the sauté pan or the oil will drip down to the burner and catch fire.

Add the mushrooms and the shallots and turn the heat to high. Shake them around so they don’t stick too much and cook the mushrooms until they give up their water, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Add 2 tablespoons of the fat and sauté until the shal-lots begin to brown, about 4 minutes. Add the hot stock and wine mixture and scrape off any browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Boil this down until the remain-ing liquid has thickened, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, wait for the sauce to stop bubbling and stir in the cream. Add salt and black pepper to taste.

Pour the sauce over the cutlets and serve at once with a green salad, potatoes or spaetzle and lots of beer. Gar-nish with parsley, if you must.

And some other important stuff you really should think about reading... To all breeders: when submitting a litter registration please make sure to sign your application. Owners of both the sire and dam need to sign the application before you submit the registra-tion application.

To all breeders: if your registered litter qualifies you for a Breeder’s Award please send your application in before December 31, 2019.

The International office is having problems reading many of the application requests for both registry and membership. Please type the application or write clearly, as this is very time con-suming. Also, when attaching documents to the International of-fice email for registrations, please attach a pdf file. Look at what you are attaching before sending, because the office is having problems getting blank applications, and the attachments are not readable. The files need to be 8”x11,” and not dark.
