Veterans Land Discount/Purchase Preference

The eterans !and "iscount program allows certain veterans a #$% discount on the purchase price ofstate residential&recreational land. The discount may be used only once during the veteran's lifetime andmay not be used in con(unction with the veterans preference.

)nder the eterans !and Sale *reference+ before offering to the general public any unoccupied residential

land by auction+ a veteran has the e,clusive opportunity purchase the land at a restricted sale at fairappraised market value. *arcels that are offered under this preference must be five acres or less+ classifiedas settlement land and -oned for residential use only.

Property Tax Exemptions

Real property owned and occupied as the primary residence and permanent place of abode by a ualifieddisabled veteran whose disability was incurred or aggravated in the line of duty and whose disability has been rated as $/ percent or more by the military service or the ).S. "epartment of eterans Affairs+ ise,empt from ta,ation on the first 01$/+///.// of assessed valuation. The e,emption transfers to a spouseif the veteran passes away and the spouse is at least 2/ years of age.

Veterans Housing and Residential Loans

The Alaska 3ousing 4inance 5orporation 6A3457 administers the eterans 8ortgage *rogram whichoffers financing for ualified veterans at lower interest rates. Active duty service in the Armed 4orces+

*ublic 3ealth Service+ 9OAA or service as a cadet at the )S 8ilitary+ Air 4orce+ 5oast :uard or 9avalAcademy may ualify. !oans are generally processed rapidly+ reuire little or no down payment+ and

often include lower interest.

A345 also offers a eterans ;nterest Rate *reference+ in which a veteran receives a one percent lowerinterest rate on the first 0$/+/// of a bank loan when purchasing a new home+ ask the bank handling thefinancing to implement this program for you. A345 grants a preference to veterans for the rent or sale of a portion of its low cost housing pro(ects units.

The spouse or dependent of an armed services member who died in the line of duty or who died as aresult of in(uries sustained while in the line of duty or who was listed by the "epartment of "efense as a

*risoner of >ar or as 8issing in Action is entitled to a waiver of undergraduate tuition and fees thestudents must be in good standing in a state supported educational institution in Alaska.

High School Diplomas

Operation Recognition+ a nation=wide effort+ recogni-es that many >orld >ar ;; veterans went off to warand never returned to high school to get a diploma.

;n Alaska+ the "epartment of Education and Early "evelopment may award diplomas to >orld >ar ;;vets living in Alaska+ including Alaska Territorial :uard members+ who served during the period ofAugust C+ 1D/ to ?uly $+ 1DC and were honorably discharged or died in active service or were releasedfrom active duty because of a service=related disability. A family member may apply on behalf of aveteran who is deceased or incapacitated. Even e,=:;s with a :raduation Euivalency "iploma couldapply.

There are many education benefits available to veterans living in Alaska. The )niversity of Alaska offers

support for veterans and service members including tuition assistance+ transferring credit+ and evaluationsof military training.

• 4ederal educational benefits include the :; Bill+ but there are many other programs and

scholarships offered. 9ational :uard members may receive up to 1//% tuition assistance at a)niversity of Alaska system school.

• Resident tuition is available at any )niversity of Alaska System school for active=duty military

personnel or members of the 9ational :uard+ or their spouses or dependent children. )nited

States veterans eligible for a A education benefit or their spouse or dependent children are also

A "isabled eteran can register one vehicle without charge and receive a specially designed registration plate thatdisplays recognition of the disabled veteran. >ith proof+ persons disabled in the line of duty+ who are $/ percentdisabled or medically handicapped as a conseuence of service are eligible. The plate does not display the standardhandicap symbol and does not carry with it special parking privileges@ however the standard wheelchair logo may beavailable depending upon the level of disability as described below.

:old Star 4amily 6:S47 plates are available to the spouse+ parent+ guardian+ sibling+ or dependent of a member of

the )nited Stated armed forces killed in the line of duty. The applicant must submit a Report of 5asualty 6"" 4orm

1H//7 to be eligible. ;f the applicant is not listed on the "" 1H//+ further proof must be submitted to connect the

applicant to the fallen soldier.

Disa&led Veterans Par$ing Permits

"isabled *arking *ermits are also obtained from the "8+ available to persons at least $/ percentdisabled or medically handicapped+ including persons disabled in the line of duty while serving in theAlaska Territorial :uard. Applicants must show reception of at least $/ percent disability compensationfrom a government agency or an affidavit signed by a physician licensed to practice in Alaska.

(las$a Veteran Driver*s License

eterans are entitled to have their veteran status noted on their Alaska "rivers !icense or ;" 5ard. 5ostis 0$ at the Alaska "8. *roof of honorable discharge is reuired.

Effective in ?une 1DDC+ Alaska adopted a military e,tension policy that states that your non=commercialdriver's license is valid for D/ days after discharge or return to the State of Alaska+ whichever occurs first.Effective ?anuary 1st+ #/11+ the policy was e,tended to military spouses.

0aiver of !ommercial Driving S$ills Test

The "8 may waive the commercial motor vehicle driving test for certain drivers with recent military

commercial motor vehicle e,perience.

Hunting and 'ishing Licenses

8embers of the military service who are on active duty permanently stationed in Alaska+ or a dependentof a member of the military service on active duty permanently stationed in Alaska+ and who have metresidency reuirements may apply for military licenses at the time of license application and pay the samerate as a resident.

Disa&led Veteran Hunting and 'ishing License

"isabled eteran resident hunting and sport fishing licenses are available at no charge to honorablydischarged veterans with a $/% or greater service=connected disability and Alaska residency. Applicantsmust have lived in Alaska for 1# consecutive months immediately preceding the application.

(las$a arine High.ay System

A reduced fare pass is available for travel on Alaska 8arine 3ighway System 6A83S7 vessels for ).S.veterans having a service=connected veteran's disability. The pass entitles the disabled veteran and an

attendant 6if reuired by physician7 to travel at half the regular passenger fare. Reduced fare does notinclude vehicle or stateroom. The pass is valid for travel between Alaskan ports on all A83S vessels+

year=round.

State !amping Pass for Disa&led Veterans

The legislature granted "isabled eterans 6"A7 the right to receive one Alaska State *ark 5amping *assfree of charge. The "A 5amping *ass+ which is valid in all developed Alaska State *ark campgroundsand is good for two years.

(las$a Railroad Discount

The Alaska Railroad offers a #/% discount to active duty+ military retirees and dependents. ;" showing proof of status must be shown at boarding.

Recording Veterans Report of Separation 'orm

A veteran may record+ without fee+ the original or a certified copy of his or her Armed 4orces Report ofSeparation 6""=#1 4orm7 at any State Recorder's office of the "epartment of 9atural Resources.

The Recorder's office maintains 1 "istrict offices throughout the state+ overseeing H recording districtsthat record+ inde,+ and archive all of the documents that create the Official *ublic Record of the state ofAlaska.

'uneral Honors

Every eligible veteran is entitled to 8ilitary 4uneral 3onors performed by uniformed members of thearmed forces.
