The 2010 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen - Sunday 5th

December

Our annual show is less than 3 months away now and arrangements are slowly putting it together. As unusual

we will need volunteers on the day to help share the load around and let everybody, club members and committee, some time to enjoy the day. If you know of any businesses that may be interested please let us know.

The return rate has been excellent. We have around 80% of members renewed already. This has kept our Membership Officer, Rod McSwain very busy and many of you will be receiving your receipts and membership cards with this edi-

tion of the club magazine. While the club constitution states that memberships must be paid by 30 September, the club has extended the due date to 31 October.

However, if renewal is not received by 31 October 2010 your membership will cease and this will be the last

magazine you will receive.

You will have received the latest Bug-In information either by email or enclosed with this magazine. It is now time to commit to attending the Bug-In and get your Pre-registration Form (see page 8) completed and sent to the club by the 31 Oc-

tober 2010 to be in the draw for free accommodation donated by Avalon Homestead Guesthouse.

At present we have a strong contingent coming from the other states and look forward to having many club members at the Bug-in as possible. It only comes to WA every 6 years, so its a long wait to the next one.

Oktoberfest Night Saturday, 30 October

2010, 6:30pm - 11:00pm Come along and celebrate the Oktoberfest for only $15 entry per head.

You need to pay for great food and fabulous German beer – but all very inexpensive. This is a night the club plans every few years and it‟s a great night.

It includes a band, floor show, dancing and the traditional stein holding competition. To my knowledge, a VW Club member is yet to win it. It involves being the last standing per-son holding a stein full of water with your arm outstretched.

So if you would like to attend, or-ganize the babysit-ters for the chil-dren, cat, dogs and budgies and call me, will have a great night out.

What has Car

72 been up to? This month Car „72 has seen the new roof lining installed the electronic igni-tion fitted and the Carby‟s have been rebuilt.

Scrutineering of Car ‟72 was relatively painless. We passed with flying col-ours. All the support crew and even the director were very complimentary toward Car „72

More work has been done on Aaron and Jenni this month with the making of Hippie costumes and our Archery for Road Show. A few little things to finish off and we should be set to take off on the Trek on Thursday 14th Oc-tober…

Friday 17th September 2010 - The Official Opening of the “Garden Terrace” at Princess Margaret Hospi-tal Ward 3b.The launch of the PMH Oncology Total Care Unit Playground and Retreat took place on Friday 17th September 2010. Some 25 Trekkers and supporters joined with representa-tives of the KCSG, PMH and some of the other major contributors to the Ward came together to celebrate the completion of this magnificent project

funded largely by the Trek. It was a proud mo-ment for the Trek and we can be justifiably proud of the project and happy in the knowledge

that our efforts will bring yet another ray of sunshine into the lives of the children and families we strive so hard to help.

Motorkhana too much for

Car‟72

Although Car „72 didn‟t enter into the motorkhana held in Toodyay on Sun-day 26th September, Aaron and Jenni took Car „72 on a test drive before our big adventure on the Trek Trak. Where better to take her than to see the other VW‟s.

The trip was great, a few hills which Car „72 doesn‟t seem to like very much. We arrived at Toodyay about 10am, met some great people, had a coffee and watched the cars races about the field - all having fun by the smiles on everyone‟s faces as they exited their cars. We then went to Toodyay town for some lunch, then headed home via Northam. On the Great Eastern Highway just East of Sawyers Valley Car „72 started to make some very unusual noises. The noises got louder and the oil light

started to flicker just out the front of the Sawyers Valley Hotel, so we pulled over and had a look! A few phone calls and it was decided that Car „72 was going home on a car trailer. Chris was our saviour of the day, picking up a hire car trailer and coming to rescue us. Being a Sunday we took Car „72 back home and would get the mechanics to look at it on Tuesday after the long weekend. Having Ian from All Torque Engineer-ing have a listen to Car „72 he in-formed us that we had probably blown a head gasket. With 2 weeks to go before we head off on the Trek, Car „72 was taken to the Mechanics for a thorough look over. Fingers crossed we will be at the starting line on Thurs-day 14th October.

Car ‘72 joined the VW Club of WA at the Targa West 2010 display. It was a beautiful day with plenty of admirers at not only Car ‘72 but all the vehicles from all the clubs displayed. Having Car ‘72 certainly gave Aaron and our daughter Shae the best viewing plat-form……

The 2010 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen - Sunday 5th

December

Sunday the 26th of September was a beautiful fine, warm, if not, hot day, pretty much exactly what we are ex-pecting over the Bug-In Easter week-end. Hats and sun cream were put on, and it was down to business.

The venue in the middle of the Tood-yay Horse Racing Circuit, was huge, far bigger than we have had previously to hold a motorkhana. We could have set up all six events in one go, how-ever, the lack of witches hats, and time keepers meant we set up two at a time.

We set up two events to run at the same time. The first one was the 'Lazy Eight" followed by the "Crazy Square". Pat Spiteri and ........... volunteered as time keepers, and with them in place, the competition began.

There were seven contestants, and first off was Ray Willis in his yellow (new) Beetle. As soon as he had com-pleted the first test, he proceeded to the second. Next was Mark Shepherd in his Myers Manx, Dave Moore in his

Kombi ute, Michael Lynton in his oval window Beetle, Richard Hines in his Sports Manx, Chris Hill in his off road buggy, and me in my yellow Beetle. The surface was great, a grassy top on a hard clay base, which didn't cut up much after seven cars went over it, as much as Chris tried in his buggy. The dust was a bit of a problem, but the light easterly breeze soon dispersed it.

Events One and Two were over quickly, so, the next two were set up. The "Multiple Loop" and the "Square Slalom" were next. We used the same

area as the first two events, to see if the surface would cut up, and we were surprised and very pleased that it did-n't.

With those two events finished, it was lunch time. The Kombi members had to leave along with a couple of others. However, others arrived. Aaron and Jenni in their Kombi 72, Rob Rafferty and family in his Kombi, Pat Bolt in her black and white Beetle, and Peter and Delveen from the Avalon Homestead, (one of the Bug-In sponsors).

The next two events were a bit trickier! The "Open Slalom" and the "Hopkirk".

It took the newcomers a while to get there heads around how to do these

tests. As I had organised the tests, it was up to me to compete first to show the way to go. The pressure was on not to make a mistake. Once shown, it was easier for the rest. It was great seeing the huge smiles on their faces after completing the test correctly, es-pecially Dave in his Kombi ute.

The next two were new to all of us. It took a little while to set up, a modified “Double Hat", and it took us all a bit longer to get our heads around how to complete it correctly. I had a go first and missed a flag, but completed it correctly the sec-ond time. It was great fun! Some just could not get their heads around it,

and when they thought they had, they would muck it up. As you can imagine, this event went for a long time, be-cause everyone wanted to get it right, and it took multiple turns to get it right,

and once you got it, you wanted an-other go! Although it was probably the most difficult, it was the one everyone enjoyed the most.

The last event of the day, "The Wolfsburg Special", is an open event, driving through witches hats about 50 metres apart, which takes up half the in field. This is a nice event to finish the day off with, as you can select sec-

ond gear, and get a bit of speed up.

There were a couple of spins, one 360, and lots of smiling faces at the end.

At the end of the day, after everything was packed away, trophies were pre-sented, a few stories were told, and the day was done.

Thanks go to Karen Fyfe for doing the bookwork for the results on the day.

Thank you to all who attended, and made it a great fun day, and a suc-cessful preliminary practise to the Bug-In. We managed to sort a few " BUGS" out. Haha!!

Clem Dwyer

Meeting by Tim Riley FVAWA

Photos by Mick Oliver

Formula Vees were the only „modern‟ class out on what was essentially a historic race day. The Vees tradi-tionally choose to race this meeting because of histori-cal connections with the Zamel‟s Plate for Silver Star 1200‟s and the Keith Morton Plate for the Gold Star 1600‟s.

The two plates are awarded to the winners of Race 3, earlier races not counting except in terms of grid posi-tion. As Myles Lockett once said, if you can‟t win a State Championship, the plates are the next best thing.

As it turned out, the racing truly lived up to the hype.

GOLD STAR: Qualifying was cold, but Cameron Ed-wards in the Pit Crew Man-agement AJ08 simply blew the field away leaving Ben Riley‟s Fuel Technology Jacer in P2, but more im-portantly 0.8 seconds adrift. Derek Burns made a wel-come return to the fray, qualifying 3rd ahead of David Campbell‟s new Stinger.

The Fuel Technol-ogy Team went into serious head scratching mode changing rear bump and front rebound suspension settings to try to dial out exit understeer.

SILVER STAR: Qualifying honours went to Bruce Welsh in the Wealth Plus Jacer. Some readers may recall the write up for the Spices Catering Meeting, where the writer suggested that it may not be long be-fore the two spring chickens a.k.a. Stewart Burns and Derek Bromlewe struck back at the old fox. Based upon qualifying times, a gambling man would have put his money on the old fox Bruce Welsh. It turned out that they would have lost their money, but more of that later.

Gold Star 1600:

Race 1: The suspension changes made by Riley and his team resulted in him closing the 0.8 second a lap qualifying gap, but he was not quite able to catch Ed-wards who won by a com-fortable 1.7 seconds. There was good action fur-ther back with David Camp-bell managing to beat Derek Burns across the line by 1/10th of a second.

Race 2: The Riley's then

went further in the same direction with suspension settings and returned to an old tried and tested tactic as the temperature rose. Ri-ley got the start, but under-estimated his opponent as Edwards slipped up the in-side into the 1st corner. Riley got past Edwards mid-Race and was rewarded by a 0.2 second win from Ed-wards.

There was great action fur-ther back, as Campbell, Burns and Bruce Allen in the Clutch Industries ScooVee has a race long tussle, coming home in that order.

Race 3: This was a stand-alone event for the Keith Morton Plate. Riley started from Pole, got the start, but again Edwards dived into a gap into Turn 1. Again Ri-ley re-passed, but Edwards stalked him like a hunter.

The two started playing mind-games, but put on a spectacular show of racing capability. The crowd waited for the final lap, and what must surely be a spec-tacular finish. It was, with Riley crossing the line a mere 19 / 10,000ths of a second ahead of Edwards.

David Campbell had a good day in his Stinger, recently acquired from the Eastern States. The machine took him to a fine 3rd ahead of Bruce Allen.

tably though, Lockett had slowed on the last lap, with engine difficulties which later proved to be terminal. Stewart Burns, one of the two spring chickens had a coming together with a 1600 on Lap 7, resulting in a DNF.

Other battles went on throughout the field, with Sean “Scotty” Evans leading home Neil McLay, David Gorbould and Neville Bet-teridge.

Race 2: Welsh went off up the escape road at Turn 1 with a jammed gearbox for a DNF and a place at the rear of the Grid for Race 3. With Lockett out due to a dam-aged piston after a mystery object was ingested in R1 and Welsh parked at Turn 1, it looked like a walk in the park for Bromlewe.

Burns however made a fighting comeback from the Rear-of-Grid start position, joining Bromlewe, but with Cousins now deciding to gate-crash the Spring Chicken‟s battle for the 1200 lead. Bromlewe prevailed, followed by Burns a mere 0.5 seconds behind. Cous-ins mounted a desperate bid for 2nd place, but missd out by 2/100th of a second. Those three were trailed across the line by Evans, Gorbould, Mclay and Bet-tridge.

Race 3: Many club mem-bers came to the aid of Bruce Welsh, notably Gerry Prosser and Trevor Par-sons, fixing his jammed gearbox just in time for him to assume a Rear-of –Grid start position for Race 3. Almost in penance it might seem, Stewart Burns day ended in Lap 1 with a gear-box issue. The gods of rac-ing giveth gears, but also taketh them away it seems.

Those who had bet their money on Welsh for the Zammel‟s Plate, were feel-ing a bit sorry for them-selves, but were heartened by a barn-storming perform-ance as he recovered from the back. The lap times said it all – one second a lap faster, and soon we had a terrific battle on for both the „plates‟.

Across the line though, it was Derek Bromlewe who took the honours, albeit missing a few tail feathers from the old fox Bruce Welsh by 0.2 seconds be-hind. Sean Evans took 3rd for the race and the day.

Congratulations to all for some terrific racing through-out the two classes.

Dave Lampard attended the...

Shannons German Autofest -

19 September 2010

whilst in Canberra recently and provided these photos.

The Shanons German Autofest was run by the Club VeeDub Canberra and was reportedly a great success with over eighty VWs on display.

The day started off a little on the cool side but the cloud cleared and the sun was great. It was excellent to see so many water cooled VWs. The split be-tween water and air cooled vehicles was about 50/50.

The following has been sent a number of times. The latest by Ken Barr ...

$600 for the car and 258

miles per gallon...

If this is not a joke and they will sell for $600.00 - they won‟t be able to make them fast enough--be good just to run around town. Here's a car that will get you back and forth to work on the cheap.......

Only a one seater however, talk about cheap transportation.......

This $600 (4000 Yuan) car is no toy

and is ready to be released in China next year. The single seater aero car totes VW (Volkswagen) branding. Volkswagen did a lot of very highly protected testing of this car in Ger-many, but it was not announced until now where the car would make its first appearance.

The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most eco-nomical car in the world is presented. The initial objective of the prototype was to prove that 1 liter of fuel could deliver 100 kilos of travel.

Gas tank capacity = 1.7 gallons; Speed = 62 – 74.6 Miles/hour; Fuel efficiency = 258 miles/gallon; Travel distance with a full tank = 404 miles

The aero design proved essential to getting the desired result. The body is 3.47 meters long and just 1.25 meters wide, and a little over a meter high. The prototype was made completely of carbon fiber and is not painted to save weight.

The power plant is a one cylinder die-sel positioned ahead of the rear axle and combined with an automatic shift controlled by a knob in the interior. Safety was not compromised as the impact and roll-over protection is com-parable to the GT racing cars.

Feel free to send articles or emails with info for the magazine...

Transporter and Multivan

with 4MOTION The Volkswagen Transporter and Mul-tivan can now be ordered with 4MO-TION all-wheel drive. The latest gen-eration of the multi-disc clutch with its optimised friction properties sets new standards in terms of traction, safety, comfort and efficiency. 4MOTION is now available in conjunction with the most powerful TDI engine (132 kW) and can also be combined with the 7-speed DSG gearbox for the first time.

4MOTION not only offers decisive traction benefits, but also permits higher cornering speeds, thereby en-hancing both safety and driving enjoy-ment – no matter what the road condi-tions.

The latest generation of the frictionally-optimised multi-plate clutch sets stan-dards in terms of traction, safety, com-fort and economy. In contrast to the mechanically controlled Haldex2 mod-ule which was previously fitted, the new 4MOTION comes equipped with an electronic control system. Within the multi-plate clutch, the oil pressure which is responsible for distributing torque to the rear wheels is no longer built up due to the difference in speed

between the front and rear axles, but is generated by an electronic pump, which supplies a pressure of 30 bar to an oil pressure reservoir. At the same time, the oil pressure reservoir en-ables the electronic pump to be tem-porarily shut-off, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Via an electronically controlled valve, this reservoir is in turn able to pass the retained pressure on to the clutch plates – precisely and continuously varying the power trans-mitted to the rear wheels with the pressure level. In extreme cases, up to 100 percent of the torque can actu-ally be distributed to the rear axle. The Haldex clutch is driven via the propel-ler shaft.

The clutch itself implements the con-trol electronics' commands extremely quickly. This not only improves trac-tion over difficult terrain and on slip-pery surfaces, but also generally en-hances active safety. If the wheel sen-sors register slip at the front axle, for example, drive torque is forwarded to the rear axle even before understeer-ing is able to occur. The control elec-tronics take a total of almost 40 differ-ent signals into consideration, includ-ing the steering angle, yaw rates, ac-celerator pedal position and engine speed. The loss of traction at individ-ual wheels is prevented by the elec-tronic differential lock EDL by means of active brake intervention. However, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also offers an optional, mechanical rear axle differential lock for the 4MO-TION system; this additionally ensures maximum traction during off-road use. Now, when the rear interwheel differ-ential lock is engaged, the further de-veloped ESP system is no longer shut-down.

Volkswagen's four-wheel drive Trans-porter and people mover has been a firm part of the Volkswagen Commer-cial Vehicle product range for 25 years. Initially limited to one engine and type of gearbox, it is now possible to combine the four-wheel drive ver-sion with an increasing number of equipment features.

New Amarok Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Introduces Australia To The Most

Fuel-Efficient Ute In Its Class.

With the Volkswagen Amarok, Volks-wagen Commercial Vehicles is show-casing the most advanced production ute to hit the Australian market in the first half of 2011. The Amarok boasts fuel efficiency, rugged good looks and uncompromising design and is sure to leave a lasting impression on visitors at this year's Australian International Motor Show.

The highly advanced TDI engines of the Amarok – all boosted by direct injection – set new standards when it

comes to fuel economy and emis-sions. The ute's active and passive safety systems and convenience fea-tures all fulfil passenger car standards. Many of the technologies implemented in the Amarok are being used for the first time in the mid-size ute segment, including a bi-turbo charged,120kW diesel engine in the Amarok TDI400. In terms of its space, load area width and height, cargo loading abilities and payload capacity, the new Amarok is "Best in Class".

The Amarok begins its international career as a four-door Dual Cab with space for five adults. In both concept and style, the Amarok is clearly influ-enced by the new Volkswagen Design DNA. This is reflected in its typical emphasis of horizontal lines, in the well-defined interplay of body surfaces and high precision of its workmanship. Specifically, one of the most promi-nent identifying features is the visual unit formed by the horizontal head-lights and radiator grille with its lou-vers and decorative trim accents. The cleanly sculpted curvatures of the Amarok's side body panels and en-gine bonnet give it the typical rugged style of a ute. The Amarok's excep-tional interior dimensions make it the most spacious ute in its class. Easy entry, a generous seating layout and lots of head room characterise the workspace behind the wheel. Ample leg room on the rear bench also makes the Amarok a full-fledged five-seater. When only two persons are aboard, the fold-up rear seat and fold-ing backrest increase interior cargo space.

The load area of the Amarok Dual Cab serves up the largest dimensions in its

class as well. It measures 1,555 mm long by 1,620 mm wide, yielding an impressive load area of 2.52m2. And that's not all. Also "Best in class" is the ute's maximum load width of 1,222 mm between the wheel wells. For the first time on a mid-size ute it is possi-ble to load Euro pallets (1.2 x 0.8 m) sideways, a space-saving feature. It is easy to transport sports equipment like motor bikes as well as bulky ma-chinery, thanks to its large dimen-sions, load sill height of 780mm and payload capacity of up to 1.0 metric tonnes. Four lashing eyes at the cor-ners of the load area secure cargo during the drive.

The safety package of the Amarok includes driver and front passenger airbags, there are also front seat head/thorax airbags. Also included are height-adjustable head restraints and three point safety belts at all seating positions.

Numerous other features guarantee a high level of active safety as well. For example, the Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) is standard equip-ment. Another feature contributing to safety is "Off-Road Mode" – activated by the press of a button – which is enabled up to a vehicle speed of 130 km/h. In this mode, the ESP system, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Anti- Slip Regulation (ASR) and Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) are all tuned for challenging off-road conditions.

Full specifications and pricing of the Amarok will be released at launch in the first quarter of 2011

The new Golf GTI Adidas can be rec-ognized by a special alloy wheel de-sign. In this case, it is the 18-inch “Serron” wheel, named after a Finnish race course. The wheel exhibits five machine-polished U-shaped dual spokes; the areas between the spokes are painted in high-sheen black.

In addition, the Golf GTI Adidas is identified on its exterior by standard bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cor-nering lights and dark tinted tail light clusters with LED technology. Special Adidas badges on the B-pillars also identify this car as a special model.

Inside, the black-red sport seat system was customised in the joint venture with Adidas. Its inner seat panels con-sist of fabric in GTI-Adidas design and sport the matching logo as well; lateral seat supports are upholstered in Vi-enna leather; interior designers exe-cuted the double cap seam of the head restraints in “Flash Red”. On the backs of the front seats, which are heated and height-adjustable, there are storage pockets for stowing smaller items and magazines, while the folding backrest of the rear seats is equipped with a combined centre armrest and pass-through to the boot space.

Colour-contrasting decorative door inlays (front), special interior accents in aluminium, fabric floor mats with decorative borders and a gearshift grip in the golf ball design of the first gen-eration GTI, complete the customised features of the GTI Adidas. Of course,

this GTI Adidas also offers standard features such as a RCD 510 audio system, Media Device Interface (MDI) and standard Bluetooth Phone Con-nectivity.

In the selection of exterior paints of-fered on this exclusive model, Volks-wagen returns to the roots of GTI his-tory: white and red. Customers can choose from the GTI-specific hues “Candy White” and “Tornado Red”.

Like all Golf GTIs, the Golf GTI Adidas also offers the sport chassis − highly praised by many independent review-ers − which delivers extremely impres-sive performance with an electronic transverse differential lock (XDL) and GTI-specific ESP tuning. The Golf GTI Adidas comes with a 155 kW turbo engine and yet consumes only 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres. It is a GTI that outputs audible dynamics through its dual tailpipe exhaust system (one tailpipe each, left and right). It is a GTI

that transfers the tradition of the origi-nal version to the future.

This special edition Golf GTI Adidas 5-door 6-speed DSG is available in Aus-tralia from $45,990*. * Prices quoted are Manufacturer List Prices excluding dealer delivery charges, which may vary from dealer to dealer and statutory charges, which vary from state to state.

Golf 77TSI – Combining affordability with class leading design and technol-ogy

Golf equipment upgrade - More value for customers at no extra cost

Volkswagen Group Australia is intro-ducing a new affordable entry model to its popular Golf range. Powered by the acclaimed 77kW TSI petrol en-gine, previously introduced in this year‟s “World Car of the Year” winner the Polo, the new Golf 77TSI truly pro-vides class leading design and top quality engineering at a lower cost.

As with the entire Golf range, the Golf 77TSI establishes a new direction in the evolution of this iconic model. Combined with excellent design quali-

ties and advanced technologies such as a sophisticated braking system with ABS and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Program) as standard, along with opti-mised crash properties, seven airbags including a knee airbag, safety opti-mised head restraints that work to counteract whiplash trauma and day-time running lights which provide for a maximum level of safety, even the most critical of judges agree that the Golf sets a benchmark for safety in its class.

At the core of the new Golf 77TSI lies the small but powerful 1.2 litres TSI engine. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine follows the downsizing philosophy of the internationally suc-cessful 1.4 litres TSI and 2.0 litre TSI.

This expresses itself as maximum power with minimal fuel consumption. The latest TSI is characterised by im-pressive performance which is con-trasted with fuel consumption and emissions values as low as 6.1 litre per 100km (manual) and 144 g/km CO2.

The maximum torque of 175 Newton-metres is available between 1,550 to 4,100 rpm. The Golf 1.2 TSI is deliv-ered with a standard 6-speed manual transmission and can be optioned with a 7-speed DSG transmission.

The Golf 77TSI will inherit the same features as the previous entry model, the Golf 90TSI Trendline. Alongside the introduction of the Golf 77TSI, the whole Golf Trendline range, including

the Golf Wagon Trendline, receives an equipment upgrade at no extra cost. Popular features such as cruise con-trol and multi-function leather steering wheel now come as standard together with the option of having Bluetooth technology.

Most notable, these new standard fea-tures are on top of the already exten-sive standard equipment list which includes Multi Functional Display (MFD trip computer), “Titanium” decor inserts and semi-automatic air condi-tioning. In addition, aesthetic features such as the leather finish for gearshift knob and handbrake lever along with 15” Wellington alloy wheels (16" Sedona alloy wheels for Golf Wagon), add even further value to the

Trendline range thereby finishing off the upgrade with style.

The new entry Golf 77TSI, together with the new generous equipment up-grade for the Trendline range, once and for all ensure that the Golf re-mains the perfect choice for those

consumers who demand a compact car that is not only functional, but also looks and feels fun to drive.

As the entry-level model the Golf 77TSI starts at $21,990* for the six-speed manual, while the 7-speed DSG variant is priced from $24,490*.

* Price are manufacturer list prices only, for the drive away price please contact your local authorised Volkswagen dealer.

World Premiere of

New Passat The Passat from Volkswagen repre-sents one of the very great success stories in auto motive history, with over 15 million cars sold since the Passat was first launched in 1973. It is now available in over 100 countries across the globe. Now, at the Mondial de l‟Auto mobile in Paris (October 2-17), Volkswagen is presenting the world premiere of an entirely new Pas-sat – as a sedan and a wagon car si-multaneously. The seventh generation of this bestseller will be available in initial European markets starting as soon as mid - November.

The fifth and sixth Passat generations had already left conventional class boundaries behind and bridged a path to the next higher segment with their high-end features. The seventh gen-eration Passat emphatically continues this trend. A completely new styling configuration was created. It simulta-neously guides the Passat‟s independ-ent design into the future. Without leaving the mid-class in terms of pric-ing, the Passat approaches the top segments even more powerfully with its upgraded comfort, convenience, quality and safety properties as well as in its assistance systems.

Up to 18 percent improved fuel econ-omy: As is usual for a Volkswagen, the new Passat also sets standards in sustainability. All engines are more fuel efficient – up to18 percent more. The “smallest” and yet torque-strong turbodiesel now consumes just 4.2 * l/100 km; that is equivalent to 109* g/km CO2. Meanwhile, downsizing and technologies such as the Stop/Start system contribute to extraordinary fuel efficiency in the petrol-powered ver-sions.

New safety features: Volkswagen is making genuine progress in the area of safety. The previous model already attained an impressive five stars in Euro -NCAP crash testing. The new model takes safety to a new level with features such as an automatic City emergency braking function and, on some models, a standard fatigue de-tection function. The fatigue detection system, which Volkswagen is introduc-ing for the first time in this class, is continually active; it detects reduced driver concentration and warns the driver with an acoustic signal; a visual message also appears in the instru-ment cluster recommending that the driver should take a break from driv-ing. As a component of the optional automatic adaptive cruise control sys-tem, in worst case scenarios the emergency braking function reacts independently at speeds below 30 km/h which can help prevent frontal colli-sions.

Another new feature on the Passat: the continually active masked main beam headlights known as Dynamic Light Assist – an option offered in con-junction with bi- xenon headlights − enables continual use of the main beam headlights while driving. Via a camera, the system detects oncoming traffic and cars driving ahead and automatically masks only those light-ing areas relevant to glare. The results improved illumination of the carriage-way in nearly all situations. The Pas-sat is the first car in its class to have this system. For vehicles with conven-tional halogen headlights, a simpler version of automatic main beam con-trol is available: Light Assist. A camera is also used here, e. g. to detect on-coming traffic. But the system

switches over completely between main beam and dipped beam. As soon as there is no more oncoming traffic, the main beam is reactivated.

The XDS electronic transverse differ-ential lock − first introduced on the Golf GT I − improves traction in bend s. Along with Lane Assist (lane keep-ing assistant), which was also avail-able in the previous model, there will now also be a Side Assist function, which uses flashing LEDs in the door mirrors to call the driver‟s attention to vehicles located laterally to the rear or next to the Passat or a vehicle ap-proaching quickly from the rear. A new, direct measuring tyre pressure monitoring system also signals poten-tial loss of tyre pressure − individually for each wheel. The pressures of all tyres may also be displayed in the in-strument cluster.

Innovative convenience systems: Other new assistance systems are essentially convenience oriented, and they significantly simplify everyday driving. They include Easy Open: If the new Passat sedan is equipped with Keyless Access (automatic lock-ing and engine starting system), a specific foot motion behind the vehi-cle is sufficient to cause the boo t lid to open. Anyone who has stood next to a car with both hands full knows know helpful a function like Easy Open can be. Naturally, the boot lid only opens for someone who is carrying the proper RF identification fob for the Passat. The human-machine interface here is a sensor located in the bumper area.

Also new in the Passat: The rear seat system that can be unlatched from the bootspace and side windows in noise-dampening compound safety glass. Park Assist II will no w also be offered on the Passat; this system not only can steer into par king spaces parallel

to the carriage way; it can also find its way into parking spaces perpendicular to it. Last but not least, the Passat‟s RNS 510 navigation system detects speed limit signs by camera and sends them to the touch screen in the centre console.

Notes: TDI, TSI, DSG and Twincharger are registered trademarks of Volkswagen AG or other compa-nies of the Volkswagen Group in Germany and other countries.

Features and technical data apply to models offered in Germany. They may differ in other countries.

BlueMotion The Most Fuel Efficient Golf of All Time to Premiere at 2010 Australian

International Motorshow

Golf BlueMotion - Redefining the benchmark for fuel economy and af-fordability in the small car segment

Volkswagen is pleased to introduce a new super efficient model - Golf BlueMotion – to the award winning Golf family. This model represents the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class and is the best known German auto-motive environmental label available. The name BlueMotion not only refers to the model, its fuel economy and emissions, but comprehensively to the whole brand: Blue is the corporate colour of Volkswagen and stands for the elements to be protected such as water and air; Motion embodies the aspect of forward, future-directed mo-bility with the goal to protect the earth‟s resources for future genera-tions.

The Golf BlueMotion is equipped with an exceedingly innovative high-tech package yet is affordable for all driv-ers. This package includes an efficient common rail TDI engine, diverse high-

tech components such as an energy recovery system based on energy recupera-tion, Stop-Start system, and improved aerodynamics as well as low rolling resistance tyres. All these technologies have one aim: to reduce fuel consumption as much as possible.

On the safety side the Golf BlueMotion will share the same safety features which are fitted to all Golf models. These include standard ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabi-lization Program), Hill Start Assist, a highly effective network of seven airbags including front side and side curtain airbags (head airbag system for front and rear passengers) and a knee airbag; belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seat-belt warning indicator and head restraints that counter-act the risk of whiplash in-jury (both front seats); along with three rear head re-straints with three point seatbelts for all passengers.

The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion is also setting new aesthetic standards with its special design of interior and exterior features as well as the logo on the radiator grille and rear which differentiates the Golf BlueMotion from the rest of the Golf range.

While delivering a combined fuel consumption figure which is better than the Toy-ota Prius, the Golf BlueMo-tion does not compromise on driving experience or affordability. In essence, the Golf BlueMotion truly dem-onstrates what is technically feasible when the best avail-able yet affordable technolo-gies of our times are com-bined to deliver a remark-able fuel consumption figure of 3.8-litre per 100km.

The most fuel-efficient pro-duction Golf of all times is

powered by a quiet and powerful common rail turbo

-diesel and like all TDIs, this engine does not lack in power or torque by any measure. In fact, the oppo-site is true: The 77kW TDI engine develops its maxi-mum torque of 250 Nm be-tween 1,500rpm to 2,500 rpm. With a theoretical range of over 1,500 kilome-tres (55 litre tank) the Golf BlueMotion will keep you on the road for longer while producing minimal CO2 emissions - as low 99 g/km.

The BlueMotion technolo-gies aboard the Golf BlueMotion make up a com-prehensive package of ex-tremely diverse high-tech components and efficiency solutions. Building the foun-dation for the extremely low fuel consumption and emis-sions values of the Golf BlueMotion is 1.6-litre TDI with four cylinders with modified engine manage-ment software and reduced idling speed. A gear-shift indicator integrated in the instrument cluster shows the most energy-efficient gear for the current driving condi-tions. Other BlueMotion fea-tures include recovery of braking energy (regenerative braking), a Stop-Start system, low roll-ing resistance tyres, espe-cially lightweight and aero-dynamic wheels styled ac-cording to the specific ver-sion, lowered suspension as well as sporty design modifi-cations and a customised interior.

Full specifications and pricing of the Golf BlueMotion will be released at launch in 2011.
