1 Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Narendrapur, Kolkata 700103. West Bengal VIDYALAYA NEWS (January, 2015 to December, 2015) The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya is an integral part of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur which has its Headquarters at Belur Math, Howrah, West Bengal. Since its opening on 22 nd April, 1958, it has been a residential school for boys established on the foundation of the high ideals of Swami Vivekananda, implementing the man-making and character-building ideals of education as propounded by him. The Vidyalaya is envisioned in the image of Indian Gurukul system where precious traditions and cherished values of the past and modern educational concepts have been integrated. It presents a synthesis of all that is best of the eastern and western models of education. It follows the trail as a paradigm of excellence to promote its culture and tradition. The lush green natural surroundings have given it a special identity. The Vidyalaya, its students and staff, all enjoy the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Saradadevi and Swami Vivekananda. Till 1975, it was the only Multipurpose School in West Bengal which offered instructions in six streams, viz. Science, Humanities, Agriculture, Technical, Commerce and Fine Arts. Thereafter, in 1976 the Vidyalaya was converted into a Secondary School under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, with Bengali and English as medium of instructions. Students can choose either Bengali or Hindi as the first language. Since 2005, the plus-two (Higher Secondary) Course has been introduced in the Science stream only with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics along with compulsory subjects Bengali and English. The Higher Secondary Course is affiliated to the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. The Vidyalaya consists of two separate campuses, each with its own school buildings and hostels. The boys of the junior classes (V-VII) stay in Junior Section campus. They have a nice three-storeyed school building and three hostels. They also have their own extensive play ground, a library specially meant for young readers and a small auditorium for cultural activities. The boys of senior classes (VIII-XII) are put up in the Senior Section campus where they have their own facilities. They have a large two- storeyed school building, seven hostels and laboratories. There are also playgrounds, a stadium, a gymnasium, a spacious auditorium and a library. About 960 students are on the roll of the Vidyalaya at present. Students come here from different parts of India. They also have different religious faiths. Some of them belong to poorer sections of the society. The staff and students coming from different regions of India live here as members of one family. 1. New Session : The new session of the Vidyalaya commenced on January 1, 2015. 140 students were admitted to Class V (BM & EM) for the academic year 2015. 2. New Developments : a) The newly constructed Central Kitchen in the Vidyalaya Senior Section was inaugurated by Most Revered Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission on 3 rd February 2015 in the presence of monks, teaching & non-teaching staff, alumni, ashrama inmates and students. b) Aqua guard purifier cum coolers (80 lt. / 120 lt.) was installed in the Junior School building (3 no’s) and in all hostels of classes V to VIII and HS sections of the Vidyalaya with the help of various alumni batches.

    2. New Developments :

    c) A guest house with 5 rooms that can accommodate 14 persons and a guest dining hall was opened

    on 2nd May, 2015 by Dr. Saibal Gupta, President of Ashrama Management Committee.

    d) A 20 KW grid connected Solar Power Plant to meet 90% of the electricity needs of the Central

    Kitchen was commissioned in December 2015.

    e) Vidyalaya published two text books for class V in Bengali and English in History (Ithihaser

    Ruprekha) and Geography (Bhugol Parichay) written by our teachers for internal use of our

    students. The books have been included in the booklist of our Asansol, Baranagar, Jayrambati and

    Taki Schools for 2016.

    f) Foundation courses: For selected students of classes VIII to X, advanced classes were arranged in

    Physics, Chemistry, Math and Biology to prepare them for various competitive exams outside school

    hours. Advanced classes in any one of the above subjects is also offered to all the interested

    students of class VIII and IX who are not enrolled for the foundation courses. Special classes for

    R.M.O is also held for interested students.

    g) A 7 weeks communicative and interactive course to improve the confidence, fluency and accuracy in Spoken English was conducted for 80 students of classes VI and VII by the British Council.

    h) A Robotics hobby club was started for the interested students of class VIII and IX.

    i) Special yogasana classes were introduced for the junior boys from this year.

    j) The first batch of 6 teachers recruited by the Vidyalaya after autonomy joined in the first week of

    May.

    3. Examinations : a) Admission Test: - Admission Test of Class V was held on 6th December (Sunday), 2015. 1977

    students appeared for the test.

    b) AIMT : 30 students of Class XII and 58 students of Class X appeared in AIMT aptitude test on 2nd August, 2015

    c) SATST and JVP Talent Search Test: 660 students took part in the Science Aptitude and Talent Search Test of J.V.P. (Jatiya Vijnan Parishad) on 5th September, 2015.

    d) NCO: - The National Cyber Olympiad was held on September 23. 301 students of classes V to IX appeared.

    e) ADTM: - Achievement cum Diagnostic Test in Mathematics was held on September 27. 355 students of classes V to IX appeared.

    f) SOF - NSO: The National Science Olympiad was held on October 15. 360 students of classes V to IX appeared.

    g) Vidyalaya was chosen as one of the venues for the Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad 2015 (Pre-RMO) conducted by the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata on Saturday, 21st November, 2015. 81 Vidyalaya students of classes IX, X and XI took part in it.

    h) Vidyalaya was one of the examination centres for the National Standard Examinations (NSE) In Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Junior Science organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). 120 students of our Higher Secondary section appeared at the tests held on Sunday, 22nd November 2015.

    i) SOF IMO: The International Mathematics Olympiad was held on December 10. 296 students of classes V to IX appeared.

    4. Performance in the Secondary & Higher Secondary Examinations : The performance of our students in the school final examinations has always been brilliant. Every year more than one hundred boys appear at the Madhyamik Pariksha and achieve hundred percent success. Many times, our students secure ranks in order of merit. In the past, it so happened that the top-most rank was secured by our students for four consecutive years. The Telegraph Award of excellence was also awarded for three consecutive years for our boys overall performance in the Madhyamik Pariksha. This year in the Madhyamik Examination, 94 out of 118 students secured 90% and above marks; while all 118 students got 80% and above marks. One student secured the 10th rank in the state.

    This year in the Higher Secondary Examination, 74 out of 80 students secured 90% and above marks;

    while all 80 students got 80% and above marks. Twenty three (23) students of our school secured top

    10 ranks in the state including the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions.

    4. School Recognitions:

    o Vidyalaya stood first among the educational institution in West Bengal in collection in the 65th TB Seal campaign and was awarded Nabakishore De Memorial Challenge Shield. Swami Alokeshanandaji Maharaj collected the award on behalf of the Vidyalaya in a function held on 2nd October in the Bengal Tuberculosis association auditorium.

    o On behalf of Bidhan Sishu Udyan, Dr. B. C. Roy Memorial Committee felicitated our school in the name of Late Atulya Ghosh on August 28, 2015 for our achievements and excellence in the field of education.

    5. Our Students Achievements : a) The Vidyalaya team comprising of students of classes VIII and IX won the 1st prize in the Inter-

    School Financial Literary Quiz organized by NABARD on 1st March.

    b) NTSE (State level) : In the state level NTSE for Class X 2015, 3 students of our Vidyalaya figured in top 10 (6, 7, 8

    position in the merit list), 25 students in top 50 and 44 students in top 100. 59 students from our

    Vidyalaya qualified for the second rounds out of 299 from the whole state.

    c) Sundhodeep Roy of Class IX was awarded a merit certificate by RBI for featuring in top 50 percentile in the country in the National Financial Literary Assessment Test held on 6th December, 2014.

    d) In the Mathematical Ability Test conducted by the Calcutta Mathematical Society, the students of

    classes IX and X of our Vidyalaya secured 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 ranks.

    e) Association of Voluntary Blood Donors, Kolkata conducted an All Bengal written Quiz Competition

    in which 4500 students from all over Bengal participated. In that competition, Vidyalaya students

    performed brilliantly securing 67 of the top 100 ranks including all ranks from 1 to 10. All the prize

    winners were felicitated in a meeting held on 14th June.

    f) This year all the top 3 positions in both Madhyamik and Higher Secondary in South 24 Parganas

    district were secured by our Vidyalaya. The students were felicitated by the DM and other district

    authorities on 19th June at District Headquarters, Alipur.

    g) All India Science Teacher Association (AISTA) conducted Talent Search Examination in Mathematics last year. The state ranks of our students is as follows:

    The toppers were felicitated on 20th June 2015. In the Inter-School Extempore Competition conducted on that occasion, Sriman Atlanto Ghoshal of Class X stood first.

    h) Two students of class IX, Sriman Utsab Thakur and Sriman Shankhayan Dutta, secured the 1stand 5th position respectively at the All India Elocution Competition on Swami Vivekananda held at Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park on 8th September, 2015. The 1st prize winner was awarded with a gold medal, books and certificate.

    i) 21 students of Madhyamik 2015 batch were selected for Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Medha Puraskar,

    2015 on the basis of the results in the Madhyamik Pariksha 2015. The prize consists of a cash

    award of Rs. 5,000/- and a certificate of merit. Two students of HS 2015 were also selected for the

    Dr. Ambedkar National Marit award and will receive a cash award of 60,000/- in a function to be

    held on 3rd February at New Delhi.

    j) Parthiv Sen of Class VI and Ankit Rausan of class VIII secured 1st rank in the inter-school Mathematics competition organized by Mio Amore and received a prize of Rs.24,000/- cash. Seven other students of classes VIX also secured top 10 ranks in that competition and received cash prizes.

    l) Sriman Soumen Ghosh of class XI has been selected as one of the 32 awardees of IMO-2015 all over India, and one of the four selected from West Bengal. He attended a month-long training camp in April-May 2015 at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai as part of the Indian team selection procedure for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

    m) The following students of our school were selected for the Award of KVPY Fellowship this year. (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship programme funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, aimed at encouraging students to take up research careers in the areas of basic sciences, engineering and medicine.)

    n) Two students of class XII, Sriman Sagnik Chakraborty and Sriman Anish Konar won the 1st prize in the Shakuntala Rohtagi Inter-school memorial debate organized by the National Council of Education, Bengal on 19th July 2015. The topic was In the opinion of the house, students should keep away from politics

    o) Two students of Class XII, Sriman Debanjan Mondal & Sriman Soumen Ghosh participated in

    INTER SCHOOL MATERIALS QUIZ COMPETITION 2015 held at Jadavpur University on 8th August. Among 23 teams, they stood 2nd and qualified for the national level held at Kalpakkam (Near Chennai) on 18th & 19th September, 2015.

    p) 11 students of class XII secured positions in the list of toppers in the Mathematical Competence

    Test (MCT) - 2015 conducted by the Association for Improvement of Mathematics Teaching, Kolkata. Sriman Shubhajit Sen has bagged a gold medal for holding the 1st position. Sriman Dibya Kanti Golui, Sriman Debartha Chakraborty and Sriman Soumyakanti Pan won prizes and certificates for securing the 3rd, 4th and 5th positions respectively. Others were given certificates at a function held at Birla Institute of Technology Extension Centre, Kolkata on 26th September, 2015. 3 students of class X also came in the list of toppers in the Talent Search Test (TST) 2015 conducted by the same organization.

    q) Class XII students came out with flying colours in Advanced Mathematical Ability Test conducted

    by the Calcutta Mathematical Society on 6th September, 2015. Nine of our students secured positions from 2nd to 10th in this prestigious event. They were felicitated with cash prizes,

    mementos and certificates on 19th September, 2015 at Societys office. The names of the students (merit wise) are as follows: Soumyakanti Pan, Shubhajit Sen, Arpan Kumar, Ritwik Bhaduri, Arkadip Das, Ranajoy Sadhukhan, Debartha Chakraborty, Sanak Mukherjee, and Subham Saha.

    r) Our class XI students Shubhayan Talukder and Souvik Bhattacharyya were felicitated with Mamraj Agarwal Rashtriya Purashkar by His Excellency Shri Keshrinath Tripathi, Honble Governor of West Bengal, at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata on Saturday, 19th September, 2015 for securing the 3rd and 4th ranks in Madhyamik Examination 2015 merit list. In the same function 8 students of our Higher Secondary 2015 batch were also felicitated for securing the first six positions in the merit list of Higher Secondary Examination this year. Students were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 5000/- each and certificates.

    s) Sriman Dhrubajyoti Sen of class XI has secured the 2nd position at the 10th S. N. Mitra Memorial

    Inter School Essay Writing Competition organized jointly by the Royal Society of Chemistry (Eastern India Section) and the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM). He was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1200/- and a certificate at a function organized at BITM auditorium on 28th November 2015.

    t) 25 Vidyalaya students (12 of class XI, 10 of class X and 3 of class IX) qualified for appearing at

    the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) 2015 in West Bengal held on Sunday, 6th December, 2015 at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata after clearing the Pre-RMO test conducted by the same institute.

    u) 26 students of class XI have been selected as JBNSTS Junior Scholars 2015 based on a written test and interview out of 102 from the whole state. Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) is a premier institute of non-formal science education that undertakes various programmes sponsored by the Central and State Governments. And 11 Students from the same class were also selected for the JBNSTS Junior Encouragement Award.

    6. Parents Teachers Meetings : Two Parent-Teachers meets, one in the Senior Section and the other in the Junior Section of the

    Vidyalaya were held on June 27 and July 11 respectively. In both the Sessions, the guardians had free discussions with the concerned subject teachers for the betterment of their wards. After the discussion sessions, the teachers and the guardians were treated to sumptuous lunch in the Vidyalaya hostels.

    7. Celebrations : From the day of the commencement of the session, students were busy with hectic preparation for

    Exhibition and Annual Celebrations. The 56th Annual Exhibition and celebrations were inaugurated by Dr. Bimal Kr. Roy, Director, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata on 18th January at 1.30 pm. Almost all the boys of classes VI to X were involved in the preparation of projects on different curricular and co-curricular subjects, display, demonstrations etc. directly or indirectly. The Chief Guest went round the exhibition displayed in 30 rooms of the Vidyalaya and then presided over the meeting arranged in the Mango grove. In his address, he appreciated the novelty of the projects and creativity of the boys. Swami Sarvaganandaji Maharaj, Secretary of Ashrama welcomed the guests and audience and Swami Vedapurushanandaji Maharaj proposed vote of thanks. The exhibition was open daily between 3.00 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. for the visitors who visited the exhibition rooms in large numbers, enjoying the projects during all the four days of the exhibition. As part of the celebrations, there were arrangements for cultural functions in the evenings.

    i) On 18th January, Rangla Punjab entertained the audience with their Bhangra dance and Punjabi folk songs.

    ii) On January 19th afternoon, students of classes VI and VII staged Go you Like and in the evening, Sura Madhuri on Guiter by Sri Shyamal Choudhuri group was performed.

    iii) On January 20th there was an exciting Hand-ball match between West Bengal Hand-ball team and

    Kolkata Police Hand-ball team and it was followed by a novel orchestra by Junior Section boys using waste materials. In the evening, students of the senior section staged a drama Jhala-pala written by Sukumar Roy. The performances of actors were highly appreciated by the audience.

    The Annual Prize giving ceremony was held on January 21 at 1.00 p.m. in the V.C. Hall.

    Revered Swami Vimalatmanandaji Maharaj, Trustee, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, presided over the meeting and Sri Avanindra Singh, I.A.S. Commissioner, School Education Govt. of West Bengal was present as Chief Guest. After a brief session of cultural programmes marked by chanting, recitation, songs, speeches etc., the president and the chief guest addressed the audience. The president and chief guest then gave away the prizes, medals, certificates and trophies to the students. More than 250 students received prizes, certificates etc. for their achievements in different disciplines of curricular and co-curricular activities. About 70 boys and girls of other schools also received prizes for their commendable performance in the Inter School elocution and essay writing competitions on Sri Sri Thakur, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda.

    a) National Youth Day: Swamijis 153rd Janmatithi and birthday was celebrated on 12th January,

    2015. A meeting was held in the V.C. Hall where the speakers and singers paid their tribute to Swamiji through songs, recitations, speeches, etc. Swami Kedaranandaji Maharaj delivered a speech on Swamiji.

    b) The 119th Netaji Jayanti was held on 23rd January, 2015 in front of the V.C. Hall. The national flag

    was hosted by Prof. Dr. Prasanta Kr. Giri.

    c) The 66th Republic Day was held on 26th January in front of the V.C. Hall. The national flag was hosted by Swami Sarvaganandaji Maharaj.

    d) Sri Saraswati Puja was performed in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall on 24th and 25th January. Students, Ex-students, teachers of the Vidyalaya along with the students and staff of other institutions of the Ashrama, guests and guardians offered puspanjali and received prasad.

    e) Naranarayan Seva: Boys of the Vidyalaya under the supervision of their teachers and house

    masters took part in the Prasad distribution to the poor people of the locality, devotees, well-wishers etc. on 1st February, 2015.

    f) Vidyarthi Vrata: The vow-taking ceremony of the newly admitted students of class V and XI was

    held on February 15 in the assembly hall of Vidyalaya (Jr. Section) with special puja, homa etc. Led by Swami Puratananandaji Maharaj, boys took vows of truth, study and service. Swami Deveswaranandaji Maharaj and Swami Vedapurushanandaji Maharaj gave mementos to the boys and then addressed the guardians reminding them of their duties and responsibilities as parents and guardians. All present in the ceremony took prasad at noon in junior hostels.

    g) Shiva Chaturdashi: Shivaratri was celebrated in the Vidyalaya for the first time on 17th February

    with a Dasopachar Puja, Arati and Bhajans. Revered Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission was present for a short time during puja. 362 students who observed fast the whole day participated enthusiastically in the programme.

    h) Ramakrishna Jayanti: The 180th Janmatithi of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna Deva was celebrated

    on February 20 (Friday) with due solemnity. A colourful procession of students and staff of the Ashrama institutions went round the Ashrama and adjoining areas including Ashramas Acharyapalli. A meeting was then held at Vivekananda Centenary Hall where speakers discussed

    the holy life and teachings of the Great Master. Speech, songs and reading from Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita formed part of the programme. Revered Swami Chetasanandaji Maharaj released Vidyalaya magazine (Phalguni, 2014). Swami Sarvaganandaji Maharaj presided over the function.

    i) A get-together was arranged on 26th February at 3.00 p.m. at the Aban Udyan in connection with

    the 56th Annual Celebration held between 18th to 21st January. Students who put up great effort to make the exhibition successful were awarded prizes. Revered Secretary Maharaj presided over the meeting, encouraged the students with his speech and distributed the prizes.

    j) Dol Purnima: Dol Purnima was celebrated with joy and gaiety on March 5.

    k) Ashrama Foundation Day : The 73rd Ashrama Foundation Day was observed on 21st April, 2015 (Akshaya Tritya). A meeting was held in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall at 10 am. Padmashree Dr. Bimal Kumar Roy, alumnus of our Vidyalaya was felicited and presented a memento by our Revered Secretary Maharaj. Dr. Roy also delivered the Swami Lokeshwarananda Memorial Lecture. The programme included hymns, songs, speeches and orchestra etc. All the ashramites, ex-students along with the members of their families and friends present in the meeting took lunch prasadam after the meeting was over in different units of the ashrama.

    In the evening, the students of the senior section presented an impressive recitation programme

    Sambhasane Natun Bachhor for 45 minutes in the V.C. Hall and it was followed by a mesmerizing performance of sand animation by Sri Kaushik Basu.

    l) Rabindra Jayanti; Kabi Pranam, Rabindranath Tagores 155th birthday was celebrated at the Mango grove on May 9 at 7.00 am. Dr. Biswajit Roy Professor of Visva Bharati University (Bengali Dept.) and an ex-student of Maha-Vidyalaya, presided over the function. The students paid their tribute to the great poet through songs, readings, recitations and speeches.

    m)Rathayatra: Rathayatra was celebrated with customary piety and enthusiasm by the students of

    the Jr. Section on 18th July 2015. A puja was performed to the deities in the morning and at 3-00 p.m. in the evening, the boys accompanied by the monks and hostel staff took the chariot containing Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra around the ashrama. Large number of guardians also participated in the procession.

    n) 69th Independence Day Celebration: True to the tradition, the 69th Independence Day was

    celebrated on 15th August with joy and enthusiasm. Brigadier Tusher Roy of Headquarters Bengal Area hoisted the National Flag and received the guard of horour. This was followed by a colourful march past of N.C.C Cadets, Vidyalaya Cadet Corps, Scouts, Bratachari and Band of Vidyalaya. A meeting was then held in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. Brigadier Tusher Roy presided over it. In his speech, he stressed on the importance of self-discipline, cleanliness and respect to parents and teachers. Songs, Orchestra, Recitation & Speeches were the highlights of the programme.

    o) Janmastami: - On the occasion of Janmastami, on 5th September 2015 Shyamnam Sankirtan

    was held in the evening both in the Senior and Junior Sections. It was followed by reading from the life of Srikrishna

    p) Teachers Day : Teachers Day was observed on 7th September, 2015 in room no. 46 of the Senior Section. Swami Devapriyananda, Principal, Probationers Training Centre, Belur Math presided over the meeting. Revered Secretary Maharaj was also present. The programme comprised of songs, speeches, recitation etc. in the afternoon a friendly football match was played between Vidyalaya Staff and Rest of Ashrama Staff. The latter won the match by 3 0.

    q) The Bhavan jayantis were celebrated with customary fervor and piety in all the bhavanas of the Vidyalaya. The boys decorated their bhavans tastefully and special puja and Ramnam were performed. In the afternoon, all teachers and other staff were sumptuously fed.

    r) Mahalaya:- A programme on Mahalaya entitled Ma Aaschhe: Kathaye O Gane was staged in the evening on 10th October 2015 in the Senior Section Assembly Hall. The students of classes VIII, IX and XI organized and participated in the programme. The wonderful performance created a festive mood in all.

    s) Sri Sri Kali Puja was performed in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall on 10th and 11th November, 2015. Students, Ex-students, Teachers of the Vidyalaya along with the students and staff of other institutions of the ashrama, guests offered pushpanjali and received Prasad.

    8. Games & Sports : Healthy mind lives in a healthy bodykeeping in conformity with this proverb,

    Physical Education has been made compulsory here for all the boys of classes V to X. Boys take part in the morning drill, physical exercises, indoor and outdoor games regularly. We organize year-round programme of games and sports activities for the boys. The major outdoor games are Football, Cricket, Volley-ball, Basketball and Badminton. Table-Tennis and Carom are the popular indoor games. In order to induce healthy competition among the boys, several tournaments are also conducted. Our boys meet different educational institutions in friendly Cricket and Football matches.

    Annual Sports

    The Annual Sports meet conducted by the CCPE of the Ashrama was held at the Ashrama stadium on February 6 and 7. About 700 students from classes V to X and a few students of classes XI and XII took part in different events with great enthusiasm. The successful athletes received prizes and trophies from Smt. Soma Biswas, a renowned woman athlete of India (Arjuna Awardee) who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Following are the achievements of our students:-

    b) Another friendly cricket match was held on 28th March, 2015 between Narendrapur Academy of

    Sports, R. K. Pally, Sonarpur and our Ashrama Vidyalaya team. Our team won the match by 24 runs.

    c) A friendly football match was played on 7th June, Vidyalaya team Vs. Rajpur Sadharan Sammilani

    Football Training Centre. Vidyalaya team won the match 2 0.

    d) Another friendly football match was played on 11th July, Vidyalaya team Vs. Sreerampur Kalyan

    Samity Coaching Camo, Garia. Match ended in a 1 1 draw.

    e) Madhyamik batch students of 1986 instituted two trophies One in memory of Late Biswajit Das (ex-student of 1986 Madhyamik batch) and another in memory of Late Sushil Bhattacharya, renowned footballer and coach. The final match of Intra-class football tournament of class VIII was held on August 26 and team Shivaji XI won the Biswajit Das trophy and Chandra Shekhar Azad XI was the runner-up.

    f) The final match of Intra-class football tournament of class IX was held on August 29 and team Netaji Subhas won the Sushil Bhattacharya trophy and Masterda Surya Sen was the runner-up.

    g) Rathayatra Football Tournament (Jr. Group): - Students of junior section (classes VI and VII) were divided into four football teams The final game of Rathayatra Football match was held on September 19 between Team Goa and Team Kerala. Team Kerala came out victorious with a score 3 2. They received Pradipta Mondal Football memorial trophy. Sri Lamabam Athouba & Sri Souvik Das were jointly awarded the trophies & medals of highest scores of the tournament. All the medals & trophy were sponsored by Sri Sumanta Mondal (Ex-student 1977 batch) in memory of his son Late Pradipta Mondal.

    10. Cultural Programmes: a) Shrutinatak: - Students of senior section staged three Shrutinataks in Bengali on July 4, 2015 in

    the Assembly Hall of our Senior Section. The plays selected were Manoj Mitras New Royal Kissa, Dev Kumar Roys Kelengkarious Kumpu and Santanu Bandopadhyays Larai Banam Rasamalai by the boys of classes VIII, IX and X respectively. The boys performed well and everyone enjoyed the programme.

    b) Teachers Drama:- Two one-Act plays, Kal Bihanga & Chokhe Angul Dada of Manoj Mitra were

    presented by the Teachers and staff of the Vidyalaya under the auspices of the Samskriti Parishad on 14th August, 2015 at 7p.m. in the Vivekananda Centenary Hall. The plays were enjoyed by one and all.

    c) A magic show was held in the junior section on May 01, 2015. Sri Amit Kumar charmed the students

    with his wonderful magic skills.

    d) Sishu Kabi Sammelan was held at the Assembly Hall of Junior Section on August 29, 2015. 27 budding poets from class V to class VII recited poems in Bengali, Hindi and English. The programme was presided over by Prof. Aveek Majumder, Chairman, Expert Syllabus Committee of School Education Department of Govt. of West Bengal. In his speech he encouraged all the students to write something on whatever they see around them. All the students were overwhelmed and enjoyed the programme a lot.

    e) Three dramas were staged on 10th October, 2015 at the Junior Section Assembly Hall The students

    of Abhedananda Bhavana enacted the play Svargalabh (in Bengali) written by our ex-teacher Late Dinanath Sen. The boys of Advaitananda Bhavana performed the drama Lalur Pantha Bali (in Bengali) by Satugopal Bhattacharjee. The pupils of Niranjanananda Bhavana dramatized Oscar Wildes story The Selfish Giant (in English). The students themselves directed the plays and also did the make-up. All the students enjoyed their friends acting very much.

    f) Cultural Programme (Junior Section) On the occasion of Mahalaya on 12th October, 2015, a programme was held in the evening by the Junior boys. The programme included speeches, songs, srutinatak etc. relating to Devi Durga. The boys liked the programme very much.

    11. Educational Excursions :

    a) Students of class VI accompanied by their staff and monks visited places of interest in Kolkata

    on 11th March, 2015.

    b) An educational excursion to Joyrambati, Kamarpukur, Bishnupur and Tarakeswar was arranged

    for class VII boys on 13 and 14 March 2015.

    c) Students of class XI went on an educational tour to Vishakhapatnam and Araku from March 28 to April 1, 2015. A group of 69 students and 10 escorts participated in the tour programme.

    d) Students of class IX went on an educational excursion to Ghatshila, Jamshedpur and Ranchi

    etc. on 4th, 5th and 6th October, 2015.

    e) Students of class VIII went on an educational excursion to Mayapur and Murshidabad etc. on 6th and 7th October, 2015

    f) Hobby Club Excursion: - 64 students of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics Hobby Club of class IX visited BITM on September 23, 2015. On the same day, 65 students of History, Geography, Fine Arts and Life Science Hobby Club of the same class visited Indian Museum. They were much benefited from these visits.

    12. Seminars and Popular talks:

    In order to widen the intellectual horizon of our students and the teachers, a diversified program of seminars, workshops and popular talks are organized throughout the year. The following are the programs organized this year.

    a) A popular talk on the creation of the universe Back to the Beginning was delivered by Dr. Jan-e Alan, Head of Theoretical High energy Physics section, VECC, Kolkata on 1st May 2015 at 7 pm in the Vidyalaya assembly hall. Dr. Alok Chakraborty, Associate Director from the same institute also spoke on cultivating scientific temper.

    b) Popular Talk on Nanotechnology and its applications: - A lecture on Nanotechnology and its applications was held in room no. 46 of our Vidyalaya on June 14, 2015 from 2 to 4 pm. Prof. Ashok Kr. Ganguly, Director, Indian Institute of Nano-Science and Technology was the speaker. It was a wonderful presentation on Nanotechnology. He advised the students to pursue science out of ones love and passion for the subject. His speech was followed by a question answer session. The students were much benefited.

    c) Popular Talk on the Mystery of the Universe: - Prof. Amalendu Bandyopadhyay delivered a popular talk on The Mystery of the Universe for the students of Junior Section on 4th July, 2015 at the Assembly Hall of Junior Section. His speech was amalgamated with slide shows. It was very interesting to the students. Prof. Bandyopadhyay was a professor and senior scientist of M.P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, M.P. Birla Planetarium, Calcutta. The students listened to his talk spellbound.

    d) Popular Talk on Knowledge, Technology, Education, and Learning: - Sri Mitadru Basu (a Vidyalaya alumnus of Madhyamik 1996 batch) organized custom interactive learning programme for students of classes VIII IX on 9th and 10th July, 2015. There were open discussions on issues relating to knowledge, technology, education, and learning, indoor hands on activities illustrating individual and group behavior, and outdoor sports connecting textual learning. Sri Basu is a publishing professional with over 11 years of experience in working in senior positions in multinational organizations including Oxford University Press and Mc Graw-Hill Education.

    e) Popular Talk on Critical Care: - Dr. Sugata Dasgupta, MD, FNB, consultant critical care specialist and Associate Professor in Anaesthology and critical care medicine at R. G. Kar Medical College delivered a popular talk in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall on 11th July, 2015. He is our alumnus of 1988 MP batch. He spoke on CRITICAL CARE with power-point presentation. Students listened to him with rapt attention and were overwhelmed.

    f) Popular talk on Mathematics as a Way of Life :- Dr. Chinmoy Ghosh, Director, National Centre for Innovations in Distance Education, IGNOU, New Delhi delivered a popular talk on Mathematics as a Way of Life on 17th July 2015 in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall. All the boys of classes VIII to X and some students of HS section attended the lecture and were much benefited. The students

    enjoyed the talk and crowded around Dr. Ghosh after the programme with more queries about the topic. Dr. Ghosh is an ex-student of our Vidyalaya (1970 HS Batch).

    g) Popular Talk on Law as Career Choice :- Mr. Ananda Basu (Ex-student of 1990 batch) Lawyer, Kolkata High Court delivered a popular talk on Law as Career Choice and shared his experiences as a practicing Lawyer on 12th September 2015 in the Vidyalaya Assembly Hall with lot of humour and insight.

    h) Members from MP Birla Planetarium Alumni Association, demonstrated the celestial objects in the

    night sky with naked eyes and also through a Telescope to boys of class VII & VI on 21st March & 9thMay respectively.

    13. Higher Secondary Section :

    a) Aptitude Test : An aptitude test for admission to Class XI (Science Group) for outside students was held on 30 May 2015. 465 students sat for the test. 56 students from our Vidyalaya by direct selection and 24 through Aptitude Test were admitted to Class XI this year. Their classes started from 15thJune 2015.

    b) The inaugural meeting of new class XI was held on June 15, 2015 in the Vidyalaya assembly hall.

    Headmaster Maharaj welcomed the students. Revered Secretary Maharaj blessed them and Dr. P. K. Giri encouraged them with his speech.

    c) Felicitation Programme for HS 2015:- The felicitation of State rankers of HS 2015 was held on 14th June, 2015 at the V.C. hall. Honorable Minister of Education, West Bengal. Sri Partha Chatterjee felicitated the rank holders. The function was attended by a large number of guardians, guests, alumni and our students.

    The Felicitation Programme started with Vedic chanting by Class XII boys followed by the welcome speech of Revered Secretary Maharaj, Swami Sarvaganandaji. Besides congratulating the boys, monastic members and teachers, he reminded everybody of the added responsibilities which the excellent result has brought along with it. Two of the rankers, Raktim Mitra and Mrinmoy Roy and one of the guardians, Dr. Susanta Dutta, shared their thoughts with the houseful of audience. The rankers were handed with medallions, books etc by the honourable Education Minister, Mr. Partha Chatterjee who recapitulated some of his memories of his ashrama days as a student. The Minister promised to help in converting the Vivekananda Centenary Hall into an AC hall. The programme compered by Jayanta Das, a teacher of the Vidyalaya, came to an end with Vote of thanks by Sarad Kumar Mirani followed by national anthem sung by all in auditorium.

    Before the function, the students were treated to a sumptuous lunch in the Vidyalaya assembly hall

    on that day. All our teaching, non-teaching staff and a few retired teachers joined the students for lunch to celebrate this unprecedented achievement.

    d) 22 students of class XI participated in the Laboratory Visit of Central Glass & Ceramic Research

    Institute, Kolkata on 26th September, 2015 in view of 73rd CSIR (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) Foundation Day Ceremony.

    e) All the 79 students of class XI visited the exhibition SandHI held at Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Kolkata, on Ho Chi Minh Sarani on September 12, 2015. The exhibition was a part of the Science and Heritage Interface (SandHI) Outreach and Dissemination programme of IIT Kharagpur. The exhibition showcased deep ecological findings, laboratory and field exploratory based observations on various themes which integrates science with heritage and attempts to apply them in the 21st century.

    14. Workshops: Br. Vedatmachaitanya and Sri Ashis Mishra attended an one day workshop on Guidance and

    counselling conducted by Institute& Counsellor Training Research and Consultancy (ICTRC) on 5th

    February.

    Sri Amitava Mukherjee, Prof. of IIT, Kanpur and an ex-student of Vidyalaya 1974 batch conducted a workshop on Robotics on 15th March (Sunday). 19 students of classes VIII and IX attended and enjoyed it.

    A workshop on Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (

    ) and other emergency rescue steps was conducted for class IX students at the

    Vidyalaya Assembly Hall on 5th September, 2015 by the Doctors and paramedics from Fortis Hospital. Dr. Ashish Nandi, Head of Emergency unit of Fortis Hospital. Dr. Sanjukta Dutta, Consultant of Emergency and Dr. Arijit Sil, SNR. Dr of Emergency, Fortis Hospital conducted the programme. It was organised by Dr. Sambhu Nath Mukherjee, an ex-student of 1984 Madhyamik batch, the students were much benefited and enjoyed the programme.

    A health screening camp was organized by Dr. Shambhu Nath Mukherjee for the newly admitted students of class V on 3rd May in the Assembly Hall (Jr. Sec.). Specialist from the departments of Eye, Dental and Medicine screened all the students and necessary follow-up measures were taken.

    The Headmaster attended an International Conference Organized by UNESCO and British Council

    on 9th July on Core Skill Pedagogy for 21st century at New Delhi. He also attended a Principals Leadership program on 11th September conducted by S.P Jain Institute of Management and attended by principals from leading schools of Kolkata.

    15. Miscellaneous :

    a) Orientation tour of new staff:- Ten newly appointed teaching and non-teaching staff of the Vidyalaya visited Belur Math, Dakshineswar, Baranagar Ashrama & School, Mayerbati, Balaram Mandir and Kalighat on 23rd September 2015. Guided by Brahmeshwarananda, they learnt the significance of these places and also the ideals and activities of the mission. They also made pranams to the senior monks at Belur Math and at other centres.

    b) Book Fair:- Scholastic, a publisher of repute conducted a Book Fair in the Senior Section of our Vidyalaya from September 5th to September 7th, 2015. All the boys of Junior and Senior Sections could go through the wide range of books at display. They enjoyed the feast of books and brought a few of their choice. A similar book fair was also organized on all the four days during the annual exhibition from 18 to 21 January.

    c) As part of the Golden Jubilee of Mobile Exhibition organized by BITM, a one day exhibition of 15 mobile vans from all over India was held on our college ground on 20th November 2015. At 3.00 pm on the same day, a meeting was held at the V.C. Hall. Our Revered Secretary Maharaj was the Chief Guest and other dignitaries from NCSM & BITM were the speakers. Sri S. K. Mirani, a teacher and ex-student of our school who witnessed the commencement of the mobile exhibition from Narendrapur Ashrama in 1965, in his speech recalled his fond memories of the first mobile science exhibition. Our students were much benefited from this whole day programme.

    d) Staff Picnic: Monastic members, Teaching and non-teaching staff of the Vidyalaya went on a one

    day tour to Sunderbans visiting Sudhanyakhali, Sajnakhali etc. on 20th December 2015. They spent the whole day observing the flora and fauna of the Sunderbans while hot and sumptuous food were served in the launch itself.

    e) Re-union: The 1990 MP batch students organized a reunion on the occasion of the 25th year of

    their passing out from the Vidyalaya on 25 December. It was a nostalgic occasion when nearly 70

    students along with their family members assembled in the Vidyalaya lawns and rejoiced sharing old

    memories. They also donated 25 lakhs to the Vidyalaya as their tribute to their alma mater. All were

    sumptuously fed after the meeting and nearly 46 of them stayed back to spend a day in retreat in

    the junior section.

    f) Felicitation to the Golden Jubilee batches: On 25 December, Vidyalaya joyfully received 55 of its

    oldest alumni from batches 62, 63, 64 & 65. They were felicitated jointly by the Vidyalaya and the

    Praktani association. Speeches from the representatives of these batches transported everyone to

    the bygone days and it was palpable to all present that Vidyalaya still holds a pride of place in their

    hearts even after the passage of several decades.

    g) Retreat of alumni: The 3rd retreat for alumni was organized on 30 31 May and the 4th retreat on

    26-27 December in the Junior Section of the Vidyalaya. Nearly 50-60 ex-students of batches from

    1963 to 1997 participated in both the retreats. For one day, they re-lived the old days, praying,

    studying, playing and even cleaning the campus with their schoolmates, before bidding farewell to

    each other and promising to be back for the next retreat.

    h) This year two of our illustrous alumni, Sri Bibek Deb Roy (1970 HS) and Sri Bimal Roy (1974 HS) were awarded Padma Sri by the Government of India. Both of them visited our ashrama and were felicitated on separate occassions.

    16. Co-curricular Activities : In order to inculcate all the finer aspects of a total man, a diversified programme of educational practice is followed here. To motivate the students to find interests in various curricular subjects, a number of hobby clubs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Geography, History, Computer, Clay-modelling are organised for the students of class IX. Boys of the Junior Section join either the Music Hobby Club or the Scout or the Bratachari Troop or the Band. Students are also trained to learn the art of self-governance by serving on the students councils known as the Vidyarthi Samsad. The Samskriti Parisad organizes different cultural programmes, celebrations and competitions throughout the year.

    17. Publications : A number of wall-magazines on different subjects of interests are published regularly by the students themselves in the Vidyalaya Hobby Clubs and in all the Students Homes. An Annual Vidyalaya Magazine Phalguni is also published where the students contribute articles in Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali and English. Two books entitled Great Masters of the World and Self-Development were published in English for the students of English Medium Sections. This year, Vidyalaya published two text books in History & Geography for class V in both English and Bengali. The books written by our own teachers were well appreciated by all concerned and were also included in the booklist of our Asansol, Baranagar, Jayarambati and Taki schools for the session 2016.

    18. Vidyalaya Cadet Corps & Boy-scout, etc : The Cadets of the Vidyalaya Cadet Corps, Boy-scout, Bratachari and Band had their regular training during the academic session.All the cadets took part in the ceremonial parade held on Netaji Jayanti, Republic Day and Independence Day. Ritoban Adhikary and Sagar Debnath of class VI attended a five days Scout Camp from 16 to 20 December at Madhyamgram. They were trained in Parade, Patro-activities, adventure activities etc.

    19. Computer, Music, Fine Arts & Work Education : These departments remained busy during the year under qualified teachers.

    20. Visit :

    Visit of Revered Vice-President Maharajji :

    a) Revered Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, visited our Ashrama from 27th January to 18th February 2015 and again from 11th August for a few days. Vidyalaya students offered their humble respect and obeisance to him on both the occassions. During his stay, seven of our Vidyalaya students had mantra-diksha (spiritual initiation) from him.

    b) Revered Swami Prabhanandaji Maharaj, Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, visited our Ashrama from 27th June to 2nd July 2015. Vidyalaya students got the opportunity to meet and offer their humble respect and obeisance to him. During his stay, few Vidyalaya students received mantra-diksha from him.

    c) About 70 students escorted by a monk and teachers of Taki R. K. Mission Vidyalaya visited our Vidyalaya on 14th March (Saturday)

    d) A team of 50 members consisting of a monk, teachers and students from R K Mission Vijayawada visited our Vidyalaya and had lunch on 20th April 2015.

    e) From Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Deoghar a group of 76 students escorted by 8 teachers and monks came to our school on 22nd September 2015 as a part of their educational excursion. They stayed in the junior section and left Narendrapur on 23rd September 2015 in the morning.

    21. Vidyalaya Praktani : Ex-students are truly the assets of any institution. We feel proud of our alumni

    who have imbibed the high ideals for which this Vidyalaya stands. They are placed in different parts of the country and abroad. Many of them keep regular contact with the Vidyalaya and participate in the development activities of the Vidyalaya in particular and the Ashrama in general by helping financially or otherwise. We express our sincere gratitude to all who helped financially for different activities of the Vidyalaya. We invite cordially more participation from the members of the Praktani.

    22. Help, Scholarship & Subsidies, etc. : A sum of Rs. 9,54,800 was given as Scholarship to 80 students of the Vidyalaya during the year. More than two lakh rupees were spent on the welfare of our hostel staff.

Donations to the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya are exempt from Income-Tax under Section 80G(5)(vi) of the Income Tax Act. 1961 vide order M. No. DIT(E) 848/8E/109/69-70 dated 12.01.2009, which has been further extended in perpetuity by letter no. DIT(E)/2923/8E/109/69-70 DATED 26.09.2011. They are always acknowledged.
