Characteristics High bandwidth networks Much higher speed than
normal Internet Provides a dedicated network so traffic does not
compete with facebook, youtube, etc. This dedicated network is like
a separate road system that has very little traffic, so when you
want to use it, it will always work without slowness. Makes it
easier to collaborate with scientists worldwide Some NRENs around

VinaREN is the National Research and Education Network of Vietnam.
It has advanced information infrastructure that fosters nationwide
and worldwide collaborations of researchers and educators
communities in Vietnam. In 2004, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan
agreed to allow Vietnam participating Trans-Eurasia Information
Network, Phase 2 (TEIN2). In 2006, the Ministry of Science and
Technologyassigned to National Center for Science and Technology
Information (NACESTI, now is NASATI) to implement the project TEIN2
VN (VinaREN). In 2007, Vietnam was an official member of the Asia
Pacific Advanced Network (APAN). In 2008, VinaREN was officially
launched at a national scale. After the project TEIN2 Vietnam
ended, since 2009, Maintaining and Developing Vietnam Research and
Education network has become a routine task in the function of
National Agency for Science and Technology Information(NASATI).
VinaREN infrastructure
VinaREN national backbone network is formed from the connection of
six network operation centers (NOC) located in Hanoi, Danang, Ho
Chi Minh City, Hue, Can Tho and Thai Nguyen. VinaREN connects 100+
R&E institutions in 11 provinces & cities VinaREN has 40
Mbps of commercial Internet for access to online databases and
journals VinaREN members: research institutes, universities, key
laboratories, major hospitals, learning resource centers, Science
and Technology Information centers. Connect with NOCs via metro
network of service providers (VTN, Viettel) or leased lines VinaREN
infrastructure
National backbone upgraded In 2011, VinaREN upgraded all the
channels on the backbone. Currently, the bandwidth at all channels
have been increased from 2 to 8 times higher than before. Hanoi -
Ho Chi Minh: 01 Gbps; Hanoi - Da Nang: 155 Mbps; Da Nang - Hue: 155
Mbps; Da Nang - Ho Chi Minh City: 155 Mbps; Ho Chi Minh City - Can
Tho: 155 Mbps; Hanoi - Thai Nguyen: 155 Mbps. International
Connection
VinaREN has beeninternationally connected to TEIN4 (Hanoi - Hong
Kong)with a bandwidth of 1 Gbpssince Mach Throughthis connection,
VinaRENhas connections to GEANT(Euro), Internet2 (US),APAN and so
on. In 2011, VinaREN cooperatedwith Viettel telecom toestablish 10
Mbpsconnection for CamREN,including 10 Mbps toTEIN3/4 via VinaREN.
E-learning E-learning has been used by more and more members to
promote national and international cooperation programs. Hanoi
National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology
(HUST) , and Can Tho University have been proactively involved in
E-learning. Project Asean Cyber University with fund from KOICA,
Korea for Vietnam, Lao, Cambodia, Myanmar. Hub center at HUST
Telemedicine Telemedicine has been largely applied by major
hospitals in Vietnam(Cho ray hospital, Central Pediatric hospital,
Viet-Duc hospital, Bachmai hospital, Hue central hospital, etc.
...) to exchange experiences between medical communities: Medical
education Endoscopic surgery Remote diagnostics Weather Forecast
Data exchanged over VinaREN is about 90% of the total data that
National center for Hydro meteorological forecasting needs for
conducting research and forecasts. Download NWP via VinaREN 100 GB
per day from US: (NCEP, NOAA, US-Navy), Korea (KMA), Australia
(BoM), China (CMA), Geant (ECMWF) and so on 20 minutes per session
instead of 5 to 6 hours before. Accuracy of short-term and
medium-term weather forecasting has been improved due to much data
Download data(50 years) from Japan for re-analysingvia VinaREN,
download time is 5-7 days instead of 6 months if using Internet 5
Mbps VinaREN-based international satellite sensing information
network has been created to facilitate access and exchange
environmental data sets, satellite images for the weather forecast
and climate change. Grid computing VinaRENfacilitates for R&E
institutions in Vietnam to conduct the researches on the grid
computing. Potential high-performance computing applications:
nuclear physics, high energy physics, life science, earth sciences.
Earth science against the impacts of climate change, prevent and
mitigate damages caused by natural disasters. Data sharing Access
to the more journal titles on science and technology in theInternet
(Database ScienceDirect, Proquest, Database on S&T in
Vietnameselanguage) Science and Technology Database (STD): S &
T documents are published in thejournal and the proceedings of
conferences and workshops in Vietnam. Thereare 156,000 records
belonging to the 300 S & T Magazine and thousands ofscientific
workshop proceedings in Vietnam Research result database: provide
detailed information on the results ofscientific and technological
tasks. There are over 12,500 records on the report ofthe research
results at all levels registered and stored at theNational
Agencyfor Science and Technology since 1975. Under Vietnam Library
consortium, connects readers via VinaRENincluding: students and
teachers in 29 universities and colleges; staffs in 9 research and
development organizations, hospitals; readers in 11 provinces and
cities across the country Video conference On-line workshop on
credit training;

Telemedicine is one of the solutions to share experiences, improve
the quality of human resourcesand health services, reduce the
overload situation of the hospitals in the big cities. With the
advantages of VinaREN on network bandwidth and stability, VinaREN
greatly assists to the health sector in Vietnam VinaREN/TEIN is
efficiently used for international collaboration on research and
education. Therefore, need: Develop more applications based on TEIN
