To our young African students a small reminder from H.A.S.

-------------

Please remember that applying for a scholarship is a very serious matter. It is definitely not synonymous with filling out a set of papers/forms and hoping for a miracle to happen.

It requires much dedication and hard work. Please be aware that any document that is required from you as part of your application will play a key role at helping the jury answer the questions: “what is special about this candidate? Does this candidate stand out from others? Why?” Please keep these facts in mind at all time as you prepare your application. Please prepare each required document with dedication and great care, stressing, where required (CV, letter of motivation…), what makes you unique (past achievements, part of your personality …).

Getting a scholarship is all about proving to the members of the jury of the particular scholarship that you are the perfect candidate.

Many Blessing to you and Good luck

For H.A.S. Staff

The Program Coordinator

Please remember that scholarships are competitions! It

takes a lot of dedication and care to prepare a competitive application.

Augmenter Vos Chance D’obtenir Une Bourse : Conseils Pratiques ----------------

L’équipe H.A.S.

This page provides information on 2012 Commonwealth Scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries for Master’s, PhD, and split-site (PhD) study in the UK. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

universities and university bodies in a number of

developing Commonwealth countries are invited to nominate candidates to the CSC. Each year, the CSC invites each nominating agency/university/university body to forward a specific number of nominations. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations (21 December 2011).

List of universities/university bodies invited to nominate candidates for split-site (PhD) study

List of universities/university bodies invited to nominate their own academic staff members for Master’s, PhD, and split-site (PhD) study

Approximately 200-230 scholarships are awarded each year. The CSC invites around three times more nominations than scholarships available – therefore, nominated candidates are not guaranteed to get a scholarship. There are no quotas for scholarships for any individual country. Candidates nominated by national nominating agencies are in competition with those nominated by universities/university bodies, and the same standards will be applied to applications made through either channel.

You must check with them in the first instance for specific advice on how to make an application and for their own closing dates. The CSC cannot accept any applications direct from candidates.

The CSC expects all candidates being considered for a Commonwealth Scholarship to be nominated by an approved nominating agency/university/university body, and to have completed an application form using our Electronic Application System (EAS).

PhD Scholarships in Sustainable Chemistry for Biomass Utilization

Several PhD scholarships are available at the Department of Chemistry . The scholarships are co-financed by the Danish Council for Independent Research Council, Technology and Production Sciences.

Background and relevance

The exhaustion of fossil resources requires that alternative pathways to fuels and materials are developed. Utilization of biomass is one of the more prominent solutions and the use of sustainable chemical reactions (i.e. catalysis) is suggested. The chemical components of biomass are typically richer in oxygen than the desired products, thus requiring chemical reactions capable of reducing the oxygen content. Although traditional chemical routes involving dehydration, oxidation and hydrogenation have shown some promise more efficient solutions are needed.

Research Plan

We propose to further expand the scope of these processes by carrying out a combined theoretical and experimental investigation known transformations. Then we intend to use computational chemistry to quickly screen hundreds of new catalyst compositions. Finally, we will synthesize and test the most promising of these in silico-generated catalysts to identify those with improved reactivity, thus resulting in more efficient utilization of biomass.Projects in the group frequently involve experimental physical organic chemistry, such as NMR, competition experiments, and isotopic labeling experiment. These experimental techniques are combined with modern computational modeling (often based on density

Eligibility:-Applicants need to hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent, or expect to receive such by 31 January 2012.-Applicants shall have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master program.-Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by The Danish Agency for International Education to establish, if the Master’s degree is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree.

Scholarship Description: The aim of the PhD project is to explore the role of empathy in social cognition. When surveying the current debate (in philosophy, developmental psychology, social neuroscience etc.) it is clear that there is little agreement as to what the term “empathy” actually denotes. Is empathy a basic, sui generis, form of intentionality directed at other experiencing subjects, is it a form of inner imitation that relies on mirror-resonance mechanisms, or is it, for instance, only permissible to talk of “empathy” when a person reaches an understanding of another’s mental state by way of imagining what it is like for that other person to be in the situation she is in. Recent proponents of a phenomenologically inspired embodied and enactive approach to social cognition have emphasized the primacy of the direct face-to-face encounter. But isn’t interpersonal understanding always contextual, and isn’t this something that thinkers in the tradition of phenomenological social theory (such as Heidegger, Gurwitsch and Schutz) have repeatedly emphasized.

International Economics to outstanding young graduates.

9 Doctoral Researchers will have the possibility to join the new Research Training Group (RTG) “Globalization andDevelopment” (GlaD) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The positions are available from April 2012. Contracts will initially be for one year, with renewal option for a total of three yearsfor doctoral researchers.

The salary level is TVL- E13 (65%).The RTG will carry out research on globalization and development by approaching these issues through combining macro-oriented globalization research with development research focused on the micro-level. It will analyze the impact of globalization - measured as flows of capital, labor and technology - on individuals or households in developing countries.

Projects within the RTG will particularly analyze the transmission mechanisms between globalization and development for individuals, examine the adaptation of households and institutions in developing countries to globalization and address the question how household’s responses to globalization interact with the globalization process itself.

Methods to be used are innovative econometric, experimental, and theoretical approaches. The program offers an integrated training which contains a structured course program, a visiting and guest researcher program with leading academics and practical experience through field visits and participation in international conferences.

The extensive supervising scheme provides guidance throughout the program. To qualify for the positions, applicants must hold an outstanding degree (diploma, master or magister level) in economics.

PhD Studentship with Atmospheric Physics Group

University of Canterbury, New Zealand

The Atmospheric Physics group at the Physics and Astronomy Department, University of Canterbury has a funded PhD student position available. The position is funded through the New Zealand Marsden Fund project "Evaluating the Impact of Excess Ionization on the Atmosphere", led by Associate Professor Craig J. Rodger at Otago University.

Recent studies show that energetic particles from the sun can cause dramatic changes in the chemical make-up of the atmosphere at high altitudes (near 100 km). Work has also demonstrated that these changes can be transported down towards the Earth surface and can potentially significantly disturb the stratosphere (the area which contains the ozone layer). This project aims to quantify the horizontal and vertical transport in the region between 10 and 100 km above the Earth surface using data from the EOS MLS satellite and state-of-the-art transport models. Directly quantifying the coupling between the upper troposphere and the mesosphere will provide new information on the role of solar variations in climate variability which will enhance the simulation of natural variability in the next generation of climate models.

Initial work in the project will be focused on developing new methods to quantify transport

from satellite data and deriving atmospheric transport models in order to improve the quantification of solar variations on the atmosphere. The study will be conducted at the University of Canterbury in collaboration with researchers at Otago University. The project is also likely to involve a research stay outside New Zealand, and may involve an instrument maintenance trip to Antarctica.

Information on the group can be found at its webpage:

http://www.phys.canterbury.ac.nz/atmos/index.shtml

APPLICATIONS: All applications must include:

A full Curriculum Vitae, INCLUDING your University transcript (i.e. list of grades awarded).

The names of at least two referees.

If English is not your native language, results of a standard English test or other evidence of your English language ability. Candidates who have taken a standard English test should check that they have met the University of Canterbury's criteria at http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/intstud/admiss/english.shtml.

A clear statement about when you would expect to be able to come to NZ.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have received an upper class honours degree (1st or 2(1)) or Masters degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related subject. A candidate is sought with good background in physics with experience in computational modelling and data analysis. The ideal candidate would be proficient in Matlab and have experience in middle atmosphere research.
