How often do you correct slang?
Do Rushey Mead students know when to code-switch between SE and slang?
Many teachers added a comment to this question, stating that they would only correct slang use if it was during a lesson, or when talking to a teacher. One teacher left this comment:
You cannot `correct` slang as it is a dynamic form of language. However some slang today is really lame (as in weak) or even mildly repulsive like `sick` for example. I will only correct it when kids say "on it" rather than `turn it on` as that is lazy and makes them sound thick when they are not thick. I think that sounding a bit thick will not help them advance in life as well as sounding reasonably cogent
Some typical comments to this question:‘Limits your ability to communicate with the widest range of people. Can make you look a bit dense if you are not careful. In formal or professional situations a certain level of correct English is expected and is thus more appropriate.’‘Slang is not always appropriate and not everybody understands the slang being used.’
Typical Comments: Depends on the context – with friends is fine. Banning something never works. Young people like to be different – slang expresses individuality Slang is fantastic – make up your own, don’t copy others! A world without slang would be boring If it was OK for Shakespeare, it’s OK for us!
