McGowan’s Musings

I had actually written the Musings on

Thursday April 21, but woke up on Friday

22nd to hear the devastating news that

another musical genius had died - of course

we could not release this issue without

mention of Prince, though we have included

a longer piece in our Friday daily news .

Apart from his incredible writing and singing

abilities his attitude to live performance

was incredible, he played everywhere and

anywhere he could and had a passion for

playing small venues, often unannounced,

so that he could perform eyeball to eyeball

with his audience - he was without doubt

a complete original, we won’t see his like

again. RIP Prince.

I haven’t moaned about the weather for a

while have I? Well, let me say it was fine, in

fact very pleasant, in Tallinn (more of that

later…), even though I’ve been there when

the sea was still frozen over, Ruud Berends,

Peter Smidt and I nearly fell through an

iced over roof (another story…) and Martin

Elbourne skidded over and broke his arm.

It’s an eventful place, but I usually expect a

little less variety and uncertainty in Brighton

and London, but what happens? Two hot,

yes hot, and sunny days, followed by really

cold sunny days and a hailstorm, and when

you’ve got a head that some may describe

as less than hirsute, those hailstones hurt!

Anyway….

Talking of Brighton, which I often do as I

live here, although local promoters, bands

and venue owners recently met with local

councillors to discuss difficulties for live

music locally, the City is soon to be overrun

by music biz people and acts from near

and far, as The Great Escape moves into

town for another edition of conference

and festival fun and games. I usually act in

a truly professional manner by setting up

shop outside a convenient pub from which I

can wave at international visitors and invite

them to buy me a drink- sorry that should

have read, invite them for a drink…See

what’s in store for Great Escape delegates

in the report in this issue.

Although we have for some years been

beset by complaints that the old guard of

acts still ruled the roost, and it was time for a

change, the big festival news is the proposed

‘super bill’ for a Coachella event in the US

featuring such newcomers as, from the UK:

Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, The

Who, and Roger Waters, plus from Canada

Neil Young, and an American by the name

of Bob Dylan… I think some of them could

do quite well. It’ll be interesting to see if the

average age of the performers on stage on

each of the three days sets some kind of a

record as they’re all in their 60’s and 70’s

(nothing wrong with that!). If it does set a

record for the oldest set of rock stars it will

highlight the fact that generally we are living

longer, and old age is not what it was!

However this is I’m sure no real comfort to

Brian Johnson of AC/DC whose worsening

deafness, an affliction he shares with

Pete Townsend and maybe some others

mentioned above, has driven him off the

road, with the ever reliable (?) Axl Rose set

to take over for the upcoming tour dates.

Now, have we got any recent stories about

young folk….? Ah, well apparently Led

Zepplin - young? – sorry, it just seems that

the pensioners are in the News for now –

and these particular aging rockers have

been accused of purloining sections of other

peoples’ songs. Shock, horror – they’re not

the first, and they won’t be the last to be at

least influenced by something that has gone

before, and though the wholesale rip-off of

someone’s work is not to be condoned, I’m

not aware of people queuing up with Led

Zepplin records demanding refunds because

the album features second hand product.

It’s all relative…

Right, apologies for dwelling on the elderly,

be assured it won’t always be that way

– or will it? – and the reports in this issue

will of course contain reference to young,

vibrant and newly creative goings on in the

business which concerns you all! Ladies and

Gentlemen – The News!

Roskilde Festival 2015 resulted in profit of EUR 2,335,570.

Roskilde Festival has always been a non-profit organisation,

therefore all proceeds will be donated to charitable and cultural

initiatives with a special focus on children and young people.

Nearly 100,000 guests bought a ticket for Roskilde Festival 2015,

taking part in a festive week of music, art and a unique sense of

community.

The festival has 30,000 volunteers.

Organisations like Red Cross, Kofoed`s Skole, the Syrian Culture

Caravan, Save the Children, Ungdomsbureauet and DanChurchAid

are among the recipients of Roskilde Festival`s profits in 2015.

Additionally, the participating organisations, companies and

societies enjoyed a record-breaking year, earning EUR 3,114,093.

They are behind the many bars, shops and stalls around the festival.

With the help of volunteers, more than 200 organisations, societies

and companies generated their profit.

Roxette management have confirmed that

the band will not only cancel their live 2016

Summer shows, but as a result of doctor’s

orders, Marie Fredriksson has been advised

to stop touring.

The duo had been set to kick off the final

leg of their RoXXXette 30th Anniversary

Tour in Switzerland on June 3rd, before

travelling onwards to countries such as

Germany, the United Kingdom and Russia.

But on Monday the Swedish pop group

issued a press release announcing that the

summer shows had all been cancelled after

Fredriksson`s doctor advised her to quit

touring.

The artist, who reunited with her fellow

Roxette member Per Gessle in 2010 after

being diagnosed with brain cancer eight

years earlier, said she was sad, but proud,

to leave behind a long career and vast

collection of global hits.

“It`s been an amazing 30 years! I feel

nothing but joy and happiness when I look

back on the Roxette world tours. All our

shows and memories over the years will

forever be a big part of my life,” said the

57-year-old.

“Sadly, now my touring days are over and I

want to take this opportunity to thank our

wonderful fans that have allowed us on our

long and winding journey.”

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has signed Ed Sheeran for worldwide

representation, excluding US and Canada.

The move had been expected since Sheeran’s agent Jon Ollier

moved to CAA from Free Trade Agency in 2015.

Sheeran, 25, recently completed a 179-date tour, selling out arenas

around the world, including three dates at Wembley Stadium,

making him the first-ever solo artist to headline the venue without

a band.

The singer continues to be represented by Paradigm Agency in the

US and Canada.

After over 16 years working together Saxon and their long-time

manager Thomas Jensen have split ways.

Saxon’s venerable frontman Biff Byford said, “We have had a great

and successful period with Thomas and will miss him very much.

We will still be involved on other projects together in future, and

we remain close friends and metal brothers.“

Thomas Jensen added, “I want to thank Biff and Saxon for over

16 years of METAL and fun on the Road. I feel very privileged to

have worked for one of the greatest metal bands on the planet,

and look forward to watching them continue asserting their metal

power worldwide.”

Jensen, Holger Hübner and Leo Loers will be expanding their

management company MPS Hanseatic where they will also be

offering business management, booking services and production

coordination.

Global city planners & the music industry take part in music canada’s and cmW’s international creative-economy summit

Global city planners and the music industry take part in Music Canada’s and Canadian Music Week’s international creative-economy summit “The Mastering Of A Music City.”

The day-long summit takes place during Canadian Music Week on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Sheraton Center, Toronto. Individual tickets are available or you can gain access with the CMW VIP pass.

The “Music City” is a true 21st Century paradigm – a shared realization that cities across the globe enjoy an often-huge economic dividend from the creation, performance and reception of music.

Whether it’s Austin, Texas, where music tourism represents half the city’s economic output from music, or Melbourne, Australia, where live music accounts for 116,000 jobs, or Toronto, where the Canadian recording industry has a $400 million impact, that song you hear is sung by robust civic economies worldwide.

2016 keynote speakers

2016 speakers

“The Mastering Of A Music City” Conference – a joint event by Music Canada, the international recording industry group IFPI, Music Cities Convention and Canadian Music Week – will explore in-depth the relationship between creative city planning, quality-of-life and the music industry.

The UK’s first cashless venue is to open soon.

Stage, a live music venue in Basingstoke will be

the first in the country to not accept cash at the

bar. All transactions will be carried out using

radio frequency identification (RFID) payment

technology. Credit cards will however still be

accepted.

Adam Hornblow, CEO of Stage Live Ltd, owners

of the 1,400-capacity venue, told media that the

decision was a matter of personal safety for the

staff and customers, stating, “Cashless keeps the

customers safe, it keeps the bar staff and your

employees safe …there can’t be a robbery of cash

if there’s no cash in the venue.”

Stage opens in Basingstoke Town Centre on Friday,

April 29, with live music from The Boomtown

rats, Belle Roscoe and Max Milner.

As we mentioned in the last issue, ‘Music’ Conventions and Festivals are opening up the topics that are

reviewed and discussed at these events. At Tallinn Music Week earlier this month discussions within

the Creativity for Change Forum, were held on the Refugee Crisis, and it was suggested that music

industry creativity and entrepreneurship could be used to help deal with such drastic situations. Some

other seemingly ‘non-music’ themes are highlighted in this report.

The Great Escape Convention runs

alongside the Brighton music festival,

promoted by MAMA & Company, and

brings together 3,500 music industry

delegates. The four Convention ‘insight

strands’ will take place on 19 and 20 May.

Next month’s The Great Escape (TGE)

Convention , which will again take place

in Brighton, UK, will focus on mental

health in the music industry, asking how the

structure and culture of the music business

can affect musicians who face mental health

challenges and what can the industry do

to help.

Help Musicians UK will kick off the

conference with its CEO, Richard Robinson,

talking about the charity’s work in

supporting the health and wellbeing of

people working in the music industry. He will

be joined by Sally Gross from the University

of Westminster, who will introduce new

academic research into the mental health of

music professionals, with the panel aiming

to inform a wider debate between artists,

managers, industry execs and healthcare

professionals on how the industry can

better ensure the good health of everyone

working in it.

Vice’s head of music, Alex Hoffman, will then

present highlights of a number of original

documentaries he has commissioned for

Noisey, the magazine’s music channel, as

part of Mental Health Awareness Week,

which coincides with The Great Escape this

year.

The mental health spotlight, titled What

has the music industry ever done for you?,

is the third announced convention ‘strand’,

following the reveal of Transparency!

Data! Blockchain! Let’s make buzzwords

happen! and What if YouTube actually is the

future?

The fourth is CDs! Vinyl! T-shirts! Who

the hell is buying this stuff?, as part of

which CMU’s Chris Cooke will review the

CD and vinyl market worldwide and Chris

Carey of Media Insight Consulting will

present what his company has learnt about

the fans who spend beyond records and

tickets.

This conference programme features panels,

keynote speakers, interviews and workshops,

as well as dinners, pitches, parties and

meetings on the state of the music industry,

offering a business platform for the global and

European music markets. 4,100 professionals

attended the last edition of Eurosonic

Noorderslag, including representatives of

400 international festivals. Watch conference

trailer or visit the registration page.

Eurosonic Noorderslag is the European

Music Platform, offering artists the chance

to play in front of a high-level mix of agents,

promotors, bookers, and representatives of

over 400 music festivals and venues. If you

want a chance to showcase your act in front

of an audience of professionals and music

lovers at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017, apply

from May 1st onwards. The submission

period closes on September 1st, 2016

Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017 will focus on music from Portugal. Nuno Saraiva from WHY

Portugal: “Being focus country at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017 is the best opportunity to

bridge the gap between the new music made in Portugal and other new music markets,

introducing the wealth of musical genres currently made in Portugal to a much wider

audience.

CMU:DIY x The Great Escape, the educational

programme that will take place on day

three of the music festival in Brighton next

month, will this year focus on ‘going live’.

Through a series of interviews, presentations,

discussions and demonstrations, CMU:DIY x

TGE will talk new talent through the process

of staging and promoting gigs, getting other

bookings, connecting with the industry, and

using the live space to build and capture a

fanbase.

This year’s event is supported by TuneCore and

will take place at Brighton’s Old Courtroom

and Lighthouse, with a series of interviews

and panels at the former, and more focused

talks and one-on-one conversations, plus

practical demos of the latest music-making

technologies, at the latter.

The day is hosted by Dice’s Jen Long, producer/

DJ John ‘00’ Fleming and CMU’s Chris Cooke,

who says: “New artists often read that the

music industry in 2016 is all about live, which

is often depressing to hear, because it can be

hard to make any money at all out of gigging

at the start of your career. But those gigs are

crucial, because they are where you build your

initial fanbase from which everything else -

recordings, merch, brand partnerships, direct-

to-fan, and future touring activity - all stems”.

“But it can be hard getting the gigs when

no one knows you or your music”, Cooke

adds. “So one of the best ways to get

started is to put on the show yourself.

Or maybe a regular gig or club night that

gets itself - and then yourself - some

attention. Quite what that means might

differ depending on the kind of music you

are making, but we’ll be covering all the

bases with the CMU:DIY programme at

The Great Escape this year”.

Festival boss Michael Eavis has announced

that Glastonbury may have to move

home from its site on his Worthy Farm

permanently.

Longleat, famous for the animals on show in

its grounds, including lions, would probably

not be the best of new permanent homes

for the festival, but it looks as though Eavis

will stage a one-off event there in 2018,

announcing that a one-off festival will take

place on a site “20 miles up the road”.

It is well known that Glastonbury takes a

year off every five years to allow for Worthy

Farm’s pastures and livestock to recover

from 200,000 people trampling over the

land; the next fallow year is 2018. Longleat

is 27 miles away from Worthy Farm, and

is the most likely site near to Glastonbury

that’s used to hosting large crowds. Eavis

said the 2018 event would be “the same

size” as Glastonbury, which has been held

at Worthy Farm since 1971.

The 2018 event is possibly to be used as a

test for possible sites in case his festival really

does have to leave its traditional home. It

seems that a gas pipe which runs under the

festival site has begun causing health and

safety concerns. He explained, “If everyone

dances on it at the same time, it could break

the pipe in theory,”. Apparently the pipe

cannot be moved, which means he may

have to permanently find a new home for

the festival. “It’s becoming very, very tricky

to have it here,” he added.

Muse, Adele and Coldplay are set to

headline this year’s edition. Foals, Beck, LCD

Soundsystem, PJ Harvey, The Last Shadow

Puppets, The Lumineers, Ellie Goulding,

Madness, Years & Years, Underworld, Jake

Bugg, Chvrches, Jack Garratt, Guy Garvey,

Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Earth Wind & Fire, Skepta,

James, John Grant and ZZ Top. Bring Me The

Horizon, New Order and Disclosure are also

confirmed.

The second edition of the International

Festival Forum (IFF) has been launched,

with many of the world’s leading booking

agencies and festival associations already

signed up as partners.

An invitation-only event for booking

agents and festivals, IFF debuted in London

last September, selling out five weeks in

advance, with 400 delegates in attendance.

“After a lot of feedback last year about

keeping IFF focused by having the right

people in the room, we’ll be offering a

limited number of extra passes to festivals,

but ostensibly keeping the same vibe,” says

ILMC head Greg Parmley who co-organises

the event with Ruud Berends (Networking

Music).

Agency Partners on IFF 2016 include Coda,

Primary Talent, X-ray Touring, United

Talent Agency, ITB and ATC Live, who all

participated in the debut event last year.

Creative Artists Agency will join the event

for the first time in 2016, and each agency

will showcase some of their finest new

festival-ready artists for the 2017 festival

season.

“The early Autumn timing of IFF is ideal

for agents and festival bookers getting

together to discuss the following year,”

says Coda’s Rob Challice. “ We were proud

to be involved with IFF’s debut last year and

we’re thrilled to be back as a partner on

this year’s edition.”

One further new addition to the IFF

2016 line up is festival organisation

Yourope which has joined the event as

an Association Partner, alongside De

Concert!, the International Jazz Festivals

Organisation and IFEA Europe. “Yourope

is excited to partner on what is fast

becoming one of the key international

music industry showcases,” says Yourope

general secretary Christoph Huber. “The

format of IFF – being exclusive to festivals

and booking agents – fits the needs of our

members well at such a crucial period in

the festival booking season.”

IFF takes place across two London venues:

Proud Camden and historic music venue

Dingwalls, next door. The morning

conference features unique panels and

workshops, while the afternoon and evening

is dedicated to agency showcases and

Q&As. Full event information is online at

The eighth edition of Tallinn Music Week offered a variety of

events, including discoveries of the city space, architecture, film,

art, food and public talks. More than 1000 delegates, including

your editor, participated at the TMW music industry conference

and Creativity for Change Forum.

Tallinn Music Week 2016 in numbers:

250 artists from 30 countries

34 676 festival visitors

1036 delegates

624 international delegates

132 international journalists

113 755 unique visits to the website from 144 countries

Tallinn buzzes during TMW, with the Conference rooms, venues,

pop up and permanent restaurants and bars. There are some

outstanding venues. The enterprising Telliskivi Creative City has

turned the former Baltic Railway factory into a lively urban centre.

The future city, built on the ruins of a gone-by era, has grown

into the biggest centre of creative entrepreneurship in Estonia.

Apart from annual festivals like TMW and Jazzkaar Telliskivi hosts

a number of concerts weekly; it is also home to Music Estonia

enterprise and to a number of bands rehearsal spaces. Telliskivi

plans to open a contemporary band house within TMW 2017

Tallinn Music Week’s annual artist award, previously known as

Skype Award and Wire Prize was this time donated by Telliskivi

Creative City. For the first time this went to the Estonian electronica

trio I Wear* Experiment. The prize, presented for the first time by

the festival’s partner Telliskivi Creative City, includes 4000 euros,

supporting the winners’ chance to further their potential for

international breakthrough.

The winner of the award was selected by TMW music industry

delegates from 123 Estonian acts who performed at the festival

this year. Next to the winner I Wear* Experiment power-folk

threesome Trad.Attack!, last year’s TMW Wire Prize laureate, folk

innovator Maarja Nuut (who I was most impressed by!), electropop

act NOËP, singer-songwriter Ingrid Lukas, dreampop band Holy

Court Decides Not To Open Love Parade TrialManfred Tari [email protected]

It was one of the most fatal European concert industry incidents

ever. In July 2010 the techno Love Parade ended in a tragedy when

21 visitors died and more than 650 people were injured in a mass

panic in a tunnel. The event was staged on an empty site close to

the central station in the city of Duisburg.

The promoter Lopavent obtained permission from local authorities

to stage the parade on the site after consultations with all involved

parties, ranging from the police, fire brigade and health & safety

experts.

The Love Parade came to Duisburg as part of the Ruhr2010,

the European Capitol of Culture project set up by the European

Commission, involving most relevant cities of the Ruhr-District in

West-Germany. Previous editions in Essen and Dortmund in the

years before went ahead more or less without any major problems.

But in the year of the Ruhr2010 the pressure for a successful edition

was more significant than for the previous two editions. The

Duisburg district court, after years of investigations, now decided

not to open up a lawsuit regarding the catastrophe.

One of the reasons the court argues is that an expert report by a

health & safety expert for events is apparently not authoritative

when it comes to identifying who and what are the reasons

responsible for the disaster in Duisburg. The district court hired

Keith Still an external expert from the UK who worked together

with a German assistant. Shortly after the event the minister of

interior of Northrhine-Westphalia ventured in interviews that

police forces and local authorities were not responsible for what

happened at the event.

According to media reports the external expert apparently came

to the same conclusion within his report. In fact the mayor of

Duisburg who also became the focus of public critics, did not sign

any legal documents that assigned legal responsibilities for him, as

such the mayor refused to resign from his position.

As part of the investigation only lower ranked officials, the

production manager and another person from the production

crew came into the focus of the court. However the prosecution

department determined to file an appeal against the court

decision.

Trade Missions By Buma Rocks And Reeperbahn Festival In The USManfred Tari [email protected]

The trade events Buma Rocks and

Reeperbahn Festival have undertaken

promotional efforts in the US. VIP-News

approached Frank Helmink, managing

director at Buma Cultuur and Alex Schulz,

managing director of Reeperbahn Festival,

asking them about their expectations.

It is interesting to see is that both

organisations have linked with existing

music industry events as hubs for their

presence in the US. In Los Angeles on April

15.-16 Buma Rocks teamed up with Global

Rock Summit, while Reeperbahn Festival is

joining the A2IM’s Indie Week Conference

in New York on June 13-16.

VIP-News: What has lead you to wave

the flag for your events in the US?

Frank Helmink: The results of some smallish

test visits over the last years.

Alex Schulz: Reeperbahn Festival is a well-

known international brand in the international

music business among publishers, recorded-

music and the live-sector. Sellers from

Europe are looking for new possibilities to

conquer the North American market with

their products especially if they have not

succeeded so far via existing opportunities.

Reeperbahn Festival might just be a strong

enough brand to attract professionals in the

music-business from the US and from Europe

as well.

VIP-News: The American market is

huge. Who you would like to reach with

your add on events and appearances in

the US?

Helmink: It depends. Our activities are meant

to promote our own events, Amsterdam

Dance Event and Eurosonic to the music

industry. Showcases, such as Buma Rocks @

Global Rock Summit are specifically targeted

at relevant music business-people that can

bring some benefit to potentially successful

bands from the Netherlands. There is a

growing demand internationally (not only

in the States) for ‘our’ music. We have to

facilitate these possibilities. Not only in the

EDM-market, where Holland is one of the

leading countries, but also in some niche

areas in the heavy metal and hardrock

markets, bands from the Netherlands broke

through as the first or amongst the first

bands, for example, Textures started djent-

metal, Within’ Temptation gothic-rock/metal.

Schulz: Eventually we aim to appeal to the

consumer of course. The Reeperbahn Festival

New York Edition is strongly connected with

the A2IM Indie Week, which means that we

expect especially European and Canadian

music business people from the recording-

sector, and distributors who are interested

in getting into contact with US buyers from

that particular sector during our first edition

in June.

Aiming to finally access the US-public, we

are not only offering curated meetings with

US music business to our delegates, but

also offering slots in our showcase venue

Santos Party House in Manhatten during

Indie Week. Performing artists give us the

chance to promote not only the showcasing

acts among the music business people,

but also Reeperbahn Festival and the new

talents through US consumer media, US

streaming services, etc.

VIP-News: The American music market

is very hard to crack for European

artists and their companies. In fact

the American market seems to be very

well barricaded, starting with the

difficulties of obtaining work permits

for European artists, then with the fact

that the initial investment expenses

required to break an act in the US are

significantly higher than in Europe.

What is your point of view on this one

and why do you believe that it is still

worthwhile for Europeans to reach out

towards the US market?Frank Helmink

VIPNEWS > INDEPTH STORY > APRIL 2016

Page 14: VIP Magazine Premium - April 2016

14

Helmink: It’s certainly not the easiest

market in which to get a foothold. The old

style promotional methods, like having to

show up at a shitload of local radio shows

is different. But the market is big. And

doable, especially with a little help from

our friend ‘the internet’.

Schulz: It is always worth struggling

to conquer the largest market in music

business even if the ways of cracking it are

tough. But of course we should not give

up, but continue working to create better

conditions re work permits for European

artists in the US, etc. Reeperbahn Festival’s

New York will be offering among other

panels at least one session, which deals

with these topics. Representatives from the

US Government are requested to take part.

VIP-News: Can you please explain what

you have noticed about the differences

and the similarities between the music

markets in the US and those in Europe?

Helmink: The music market is developing

towards a worldwide general market. Less

rock, more EDM and more and more hip

hop. Biggest difference is that we have

varying local aspects for bands, such

as different countries and languages of

course.

VIP-News: What do you recommend

that Europeans should consider when

starting or doing business with music

companies in the US?

Helmink: Just do it. It’s as simple as that.

Don’t be afraid to travel or even move to

the States if you really want to.

As we’ve been referring to in this issue,

here’s another music industry event involving

itself with the bigger picture: Edinburgh

based Wide Days is set to add a political

dimension to this year’s programme with

party representatives outlining their music-

related policies in the run up to next month’s

Scottish elections.

The event took place on Friday 22 April

at Edinburgh’s Pleasance Theatre, Wide

Days’ hustings debate included the culture

spokespeople for Labour, the Scottish Greens

and left-wing alliance RISE. They were joined

by the Scottish National Party and Liberal

Democrat candidates for the Edinburgh

Central constituency, where most of the

capital’s music venues are located.

“The Scottish Parliament is not only

responsible for culture, but also for planning,

local government, education, enterprise

and tourism, “says Wide Days founder Olaf

Furniss. “These areas are highly relevant to our

sector and the discussion is an opportunity to

learn how each party’s policies will relate to

Scotland’s musicians and music business.”

Internationally renowned as one of

the most fun boutique conference and

showcase events, Wide Days attracts

around 250 delegates to its daytime

professional panel programme, this year

including guest speakers from Europe

and the United States, while the evening’s

showcase events have earned a reputation

among emerging acts for delivering

success. A number of acts have secured

record deals after performing at Wide

Days, while Scottish duo Honeyblood,

which played their second ever gig at Wide

Days, last year supported Foo Fighters at

Murrayfield Stadium.

We’ll report on this in the next issue…

XpoNorth has announced its music showcase line up of SIXTY SIX

music acts that have been selected to perform live in Inverness on

the 8th and 9th of June.

The full line up was carefully selected by a jury of industry

professionals and XpoNorth looks forward to welcoming a wealth

of musical talent from near and far including partners Live at Heart in

Sweden, EXCITE, European festival network and Trinidad & Tobago,

as well as a multitude of Scotland-based talent performing all

genres: with the introduction of an electronic stage this year.

For selected acts, there is also the chance of appearing at Beauly-

based Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival in August this year on a

specially curated XpoNorth stage.

The annual Inverness-based XpoNorth festival is devoted to

boosting creative careers in the Highlands and Islands and beyond.

The only event of its kind in Scotland devoted to crafts, publishing,

screen and broadcast as well as music, XpoNorth is also attended

by leading creative industry insiders, who take part in workshops,

panels and masterclass sessions over the course of both days.

By night the festival stages music showcase presenting acts from

the UK and beyond appearing on stages across Scotland’s most

northerly city over two nights, each act playing a strict half hour set.

The full music schedule will be published along with the full festival

Nick (Loris) Loridas established DIDI Music in 1984

as a record label. In 1987, with the cooperation of

NANA TRANDOU, Big Star Promotion was created as

a department of DIDI Music, specializing in concert

promotion. Gradually, the record release department

of the company has been surpassed by the growing

agency sector.

DIDI MUSIC / BIG STAR PROMOTION has made

the breakthrough in the local market, organising events and hosting artists of

international importance. The company is also the exclusive booking agent for two

of our nation’s best selling pop/rock bands arranging for both bands to tour abroad,

something that local groups rarely have a chance to do. Since 1997, we successfully

organise the ROCKWAVE Festival attracting thousands of people, featuring great acts

and a plethora of other activities. Our festival has always been devoted to promoting

social awareness, having stands on site giving out brochures and information leaflets

concerning AIDS and the HIV virus, Greenpeace and Amnesty International.

ROCKWAVE Festival, no doubt, contributed in the last few years to change our

country’s image, making it an equal member of the global music entertainment scene.

BIG STAR PROMOTION is a member of YOUROPE, the most important union of

European festival promoters. Ms Nana Trandou, our managing director, has been

elected in the Board of Directors of YOUROPE, as well as, leader of the workgroup

on the Performance Royalties Society (PRS). We are also represented in ILMC, the

International Live Music Conference.

DIDI MUSIC is established in the Greek market as the provider of high quality services

that guarantee safety and top the most demanding performing requirements,

through our efforts, commitment and high investments in exclusive technical and

stage equipment. We are currently developing our company image to strengthen our

identity as the leading service providers in Greece for organising outdoor and indoor

events.
