    WHEN MYfamily

movedto Texas, havingnevervisitedthe statebefore, we came with some preconceived notionsabout Texas being all cattle and cowboys. We

were a bit chagrined to find palm trees and crawfish instead. As Ive been here a bitlonger, Ive discovered that if you get o Dowlen Road, youll find that the ranchingand cowboy life I always associated with Texas is alive and thriving in our region.

Last fall I interviewed one of our local rodeo stars, Zach Dishman (VIPersonality,October 2009). Listening to Zach, I realized that rodeo is a lifestyle for a large seg-ment of our community, even if they never attempt to go pro. Its a family traditionpassed on from one generation to the next. (Congratulations to the Dishman family

on the arrival of the latest generation!)Im as fascinated as the next person watching these competitors do amazing stunts

with horses and bulls. I kind of think they must be a little bit crazy but judge foryourself starting on p. 35. Weve rounded up seven local individuals who participate in avariety of events to share a bit about their experiences.

As March 2 is Texas Independence Day, weve included some other features onTexan topics such as country-western dancing, food and cowboy boots. This cityslickernow has a serious hankering for some boots. They are amazing pieces of art and fash-ion its just so hard to choose.

Also, I want to take lessons from Zona Jones on how to balance so many dierentroles. He was gracious in sharing his time with me. While we visited, we chatted aboutthe rich musical tradition in Southeast Texas. I asked Zona about any up-and-comersto watch. He said he thinks the Blue Broussard Band has a bright future, working veryhard at it.

Lastly, we are loving seeing your faces on our Facebook page! What a good-

looking group you are too it wont be hard to find models in the future! As we go topress, we have 842 fans and counting. Join us as a fan of VIP of Southeast Texasat www.facebook.com/vipofsetx.

On the day I was born, my mom hadeen riding before she went to the hospital, aid Jessica McMakin of Sour Lake, a lover of

horses, a prize-winning competitor, a collegetudent and self-professed tomboy. I wasiding by myself when I was 2 years old.

Last year, McMakin and her horse Moosewon $25,000, ranking in the top 15 of theNational Cutting Horse Association in thenon-professional division. McMakin took a se-mester o from Blinn College to pursue show-ng full-out. I thought I wanted to be a horse

trainer, but when I saw the everyday stressesof what those trainers go through, it got to bewhere it wasnt fun, she said. I didnt wantto lose the love I had for horses, because it wasturning into work rather than fun.

She and Moose compete most weekends, judged on how well they can cut energeticcows from the herd in just 2 minutes fol-lowing strict rules. When everything is justright, it feels like youre hovering over theground, she described. The motions are sosmooth and quick, its unlike any other feel-ing. When the horse is right there with thecow, its like a dance.

McMakin almost lost Moose as a mountwhen he was injured in 2006. After he hadfour surgeries, McMakin had given up hopethat they would ever ride together again. Her mother, Ann Bankston, took Moose as

her charge and spent a year and a half dorehab work with him. In 2009, Moose wready to compete and the pair was betterthan ever.

McMakin is now a Lamar University

student, having transferred this semesterstudying for a teaching certificate and maing in history. Since she has been riding cting horses for 11 years, she doesnt plan quitting any time soon. Shell be competin the Houston Livestock Show and Rodethis month. She juggles classes with coming and spending time with her belovedhorses. I know this sounds weird, but Ireally like the way their breath smells, ssaid. They are completely dierent fromother animals, their body language and hthey communicate. Its a special relationship. The moment you walk into Vicki and TimBauers house, you feel right at home. Locatedon their ranch near Winnie, the Bauershome effuses gracious Southern charm with agenerous dollop of Western flair.

Built in 1951 by Tims parents, Patricia andLeroy Bauer, the ranch-style house was renovatedin 1998, when Vicki, an elementary school principaland Tim, a financial planner, took up residence in hischildhood home. Though the house is stylishly modern-

ized and elegantly appointed, the Bauers managed to stay true to the history ofthe home. When this house was built, it was really a grand home, said Vicki. Itried to use a lot of the original features of the house, and re-imagine them. I wanted to

wanted to honor the integrity of the home.To retain the farmhouse feel of the home, the Bauers left the orig-

nal wood flooring, salvaged crown molding from remodeled roomsnd replaced them elsewhere, and even refinished and reused the oldrass doorknobs. Much of the furniture is original as well, recoverednd rearranged to fit the updated styling of the house.

Though the Bauers home is set on the rolling fields of a workinganch, the interior is by no means rustic. Guest rooms feature stately

king-sized beds, piled high with luxurious comforters and richabrics. Each bedroom now has its own full bath, where evidence of

Vickis Southern hospitality is in every detail, from the thick robes

hanging on the doors, to the soft music playing throughout. Theremodeled kitchen boasts every modern convenience, all situatedaround a huge granite-topped island.

But the true center of the Bauer home is not the kitchen or evthe den, but a special place they call the hunt room. Once youenter this room, you understand the name, as you come face to fawith an enormous bualo staring back at you from its mount abothe fireplace. Standing in the hunt room is like waking up in a JohWayne film, complete with its own saloon.

Evidence of Tims passion for hunting is all over the room, fromassive elk head to fox hides and a mounted bobcat. I shot that right out the front door, Tim said.

The decor of the room is masculine and unequivocally Texan, with oversized chairs covered in tooled leather and rawhide. >>

Most of the pieces were picked up byVicki when traveling in Santa Fe, Den-ver, Dallas and towns around the state.Id rather do without something until

I nd the perfect piece, she said. Andthen wherever I go, when I see it, Ill getit.

Tims fathers and grandfatherssaddles are displayed in the hunt room,as well as a childs pony ride from 1952that Vicki found in Canton. When sheputs in a quarter, the little horse bucksaway to the title tune from Bonanza.

Youd be surprised who has takena ride on that horse at parties, shelaughed. Whether youre 8 or 80, thatthing will put a smile on your face.

Putting a smile on their guests faceseems to be the goal of the Vicki and

Tim Bauer, whether by pamperingthem with deluxe accommodations orencouraging them to belly up to thehunt room bar like a character straightout of the Old West. I want this houseto be a haven of hospitality, Vicki said.I want you to comfortable. Overnightguests do have to adhere to Vickis rules, however. This most important one isdont make the bed, she laughed.

When Tims mother became too ill tocare for her ranch home, her childrenoriginally put it on the market. Butwhen Tim thought of selling his fam-ilys land, he realized the importance of

holding on to his childhood home. Afterextensive remodeling, Vicki and TimBauer now have a home that honors itspast while embracing the future. All ofVicki and Tims three children and theirspouses plan to make their own homeson their familysacreage. This is myfathers legacy, Timsaid. I plan to pass itdown for generationsto come. VIP

ome for the country, said TrishBujard of The Texas Longhorn.

People love to get out there andance to the country music, es-ecially line dancing. We always

have a lot of people on the floorwhen there is a line dance going

    n.Broussard says that people

re interested in learning toountry-western dance for all

kinds of reasons. Weve gotuys who want to meet girls,

oung couples, people who do itor exercise, and those who comeo hone their skills and competen dance competitions. Indeed,

Broussard dances with severalancers who travel the country

    or competitions.

Sharon Shepherd of Dew-eyville began country-westerndancing with her husband afterseeing some accomplished danc-ers one night at a local club. Wehadnt ever done much socialdancing before, but when we

saw them, we really wanted tolearn to do what they were do-ing. After six weeks of classes, she eventually began dancingin competitions with a profes-sional dancer from Houston. She recently returned from theWorld Championship competi-tion, where she placed second inher division.

While many people think ofcountry-western dancing as aphenomenon occurring strictlysouth of the Mason-Dixon Line, people from all over the country

attend country-western dancecompetitions. There are compe-titions in New York, California,Colorado, really everywhere,Shepherd said.

When they are not competing, many serious country westerndancers go to clubs like Whiskey

River and The Texas Longhoron the weekends, where themusic is typically exclusivelycountry until about 11 p.m.

Perhaps its the image of Band Sissy twirling around the

dance floor in Urban Cowbowith Charlie Daniels singing the background, or the risinginfluence of the Texas countrscene on college campuses acthe state, but country-westerdancing is still a meaningful of the culture in Texas. VIP

    Flirting 411Contrary to clich connotations

about flirting, this social interactionis simply one person indicating inter-est towards another. While being out-

going does help, you dont have to bea ladys man or a confident woman

in order to be a good flirt.Flirting could be romantically or

sexually motivated, or playful, natural and in-nocent. It all depends on the flirters intentions.Adjunct instructor of psychology at Lamar University

Brooke Hall said flirting is a way to socially connect to someonelse, even if its at a shallow level. I watched my 2-year-old son

flirt shamelessly with a woman in church, she said. When hebecame too chatty, she said Shhh, while winking at him. I wasnt

able to quiet him, but she sure was.Flirting is also a safe way to feel out another person, withou

a direct rejection of feelings, Hall explained.

Are You Fit for Flirting? Its human instinct to want to connect with other people. Your

personality will determine at what level you feel comfortable flirting.

People with outgoing personalities may flirt more naturally, but like any social skill, flirting can be learned, said Hall. Ifsomeones personality is more introverted, their flirting may bemore subtle, while extremely outgoing people may have boundaryissues, and may push flirting too far, making others uncomfort-able.

Contrary to what some flirting-phobs may think, Greek god-like looks are not a prerequisite. While appearances arent unim

ortant, good flirts may or may not be attractive,Hall said. Their personality makes people feel at

ase and good about themselves. Thats a big partf what makes a successful flirt.

Flirting: A Learned ArtWhile flirting may be second nature to some,

t may feel quite foreign to others. According toHall, observational learning is a great way to get

tarted. Find a good flirt, watch them, assesswhat youve learned, and observe the feedback

ou get for your approaches, Hall said.

Married and Flirting?Flirting is typically put into motion to initiate

new relationship. Is there life for flirting aftermarriage or is it left at the altar?

I think flirting with your spouse is a dier-nt kind of flirting because the marital bond islready established, Hall said. Its a way tonhance an already existing relationship versusnitiating a new one. In marriage, you also have

many shared experiences, which oer prime

flirting opportunities, and you can get awaywith more teasing banter, which is riskier with astranger.

Flirting also provides a way to express feelingstowards your spouse, Hall said.

Whether you were born to flirt or shudder atthe thought, the Flirting Fundamentals can helpyou spice things up in the romance department. With a little courage, its so easy a 2-yearold can do it.So, getyour flirt on!

FLIRTING FUNDAMENTALSEye Contact The most eective, direct tech-

nique, which can establish intimacy and thelevel of conversation. Caution dont stare, giving misinterpreted (creepy) signals.

The Double Take Doing an intentionaldouble-take at your flirtee, versus a stare, sayssomething caught your attention.

Sincere Flattery - Use genuine flattery bytelling the object of your aection somethingunexpected, that they dont hear all the time.

Hello & Handshake Your hello and hand-shake should be full of energy, confidence andgenuine happiness to see that person. Keepyour tone low, and never portray fear or anxi-ety. The handshake may be your only chanceto touch hands.

Rules of Conversation People love talkingabout themselves. Ask uncommon questions,or prompt their life story by telling yours first.Sharing inner thoughts establishes an immedi-ate bond.

Stay In the Know - Conversations with newpeople can be intellectually stimulating. Stay

up-to-date with current events, best-sellingbooks, music and movies.

Rhythm that Riles Play with anythingrhythmically. Dangle a shoe. Play with anearring. Apply lip gloss. Swirl your straw.Run your finger around the rim of your glass.Guys, slightly swirl your entire glass, strokeyour hair, or adjust your cus. Its not aboutwhat you do, but the rhythmic movements youmake.

Whisper Use a partner, preferably of yoursame sex. To get the object of your flirtationsattention, face their direction, then whisper inyour friends ear. Then smile at the flirtee. In-voking intrigue, and making them wonder, willget their attention. Whispering directly to the

person youre flirting with is also very sexual.Leave Them Wanting More When youre flirt-

ing, give your undivided attention. There isnothing more flattering. However, people wantwhat they cant have. An expert flirt will flirtuntil they get a response, and then back o.When things are going well, leave. Dont waituntil the conversation lulls. Youll be sure tohear from them again. VIP

Dont depend on others to make things happen.

    Dont tease.

    Dont cling.

Dont dwell on irting (do it and forget it).

Dont dget (its annoying and shows nervous tension).

Dont ask So tell me about yourself. This comes across as a demand

to perform, and puts them on the defensive.

If the location is crowded or loud, dont exchange life stories.

    Dont discuss politics.

Dont ask yes or no questions.

Ladies dont powder your nose or check your mirror.

Dont use whispering unless you like the person, or it could lead them on.

Rodeo (noun) derived from theSpanish word, rodear, meaning

    o surround or roundup

You might think Romos a cowboy, but weveot news for ya he wouldnt last a second inhe rodeo ring.

Real cowboys eat courage for breakfast. Quint-ssential cowboy John Wayne said courage is abouteing scared to death, but saddling up anyway.

Saddled up and raring to go, these local competitorsisk their lives to daringly reenact, with athletic dexter-ty and meticulous training, many skills that early ranchers andowhands were forced to master in order to survive on the range.

Their passion for the adrenaline-pumping sport of rodeo isteeped in family tradition and a personal connection with

    Texas history.

Darrell Petry, 40, knowshow it feels to wake up eachmorning and take the steer bythe horns. In fact, hes made acareer out of it.

Competing since the ageof 19, Petry, a Cheek resident, developed an early passion forthe rodeos fastest sport of steerwrestling. By sheer strengthand technique, Petry jumpsfrom his galloping horse onto asteer, and then quickly wrestlesthat 400-600 pound animal tothe ground, sometimes impact-

    ing atspeeds

    of 30mph.From a large

family of rodeo aficiona-dos, Petry ultimately chose

a career in steer wrestling, deeply connecting with thephysical and mental stimula-tion of the competition. I lovea challenge, Petry said. Whilethere is risk involved, steerwrestling is in my system. Icant help but love it.

Petry asserts that his par-ticipation in this form of rodeohonors his heritage, giving hima greater appreciation of the tri-als experienced by his Old Westancestors. In fact, he bristlesat stereotypes that insinuate

    rodeosabuse

    animals,explaining

    that the steers aretrained beforehand

    to be team players in

the sport. Together, theteam of steer, horseand cowboy pay hom-age to early settlers.

A true cow-boy respects and loves

animals and never intends tohurt them, he explained. Myanimals are my kids and aretreated better than I treat somepeople.

Because of his devotionto rodeo, with its rigorousdemands and extensive travel,Petry admits to putting o mar-

riage and children in order topursue his dream. He intendsto fully devote himself to es-tablishing his own family afteretirement.

However, retirement onlylooms in the far-distant future

not at all impacting Petrys curent athletic endeavors. Withhigh hopes of competing in th2010 National Finals Rodeo, hintends to rank within the top15 of professional steer wres-tlers, qualifying him to compein the Super Bowl of rodeos

Ive still got plenty of fighin me, Petry assured. I knowIm not going to be doing thisforever but I dont plan to retiany time soon. When I doretire, it will be while Im at thtop of my game. >>

According to Bertino, the hardest partof being a cowgirl is the labor-intensivework involved. I do it all by myself, she said. Its a lot of commitment andresponsibility. The best part of being acowgirl is when all the hard work payso with a win. Does she foresee an endto her cowgirl days? When I cannotride, I will quit, she said. Living a peacefully unas-suming lifestyle in Buna,Kody Curry, 29, brags abouthis beautiful wife and twoyoung sons (ages two and fivemonths) like any proud papa. While the dusty boots andno-frills jeans might alludeto his love of the down-homecountry life, most would notsuspect that Curry is an inter-nationally renowned competi-tor ranking as the 18th best

    professional tie-down roper inthe world.

Heralding back to the prac-tices of early cattle ranchersmethods of quickly immobiliz-ing sick or injured cattle fromthe herd, tie-down ropingis widely honored as one ofthe rodeos most challeng-ing sports. When competing,Curry gallops toward a calfon horseback, dismountsand ropes the calf, flanks (or

wrestles down) the animal, and then ties together threeof the calfs legs in a matter ofseconds. With so many oppor-

tunities to err, Curry meticu-lously practices to improve hisspeed and precision.

Roping takes a lot of abil-ity, Curry explained. Youand the horse must performperfectly. With so manyvariables, roping can be thehardest to conquer.

Currys secret to success issimple. Practice makes perfect.Having joined the sport at theage of eight, he certainly hasplenty of practice under those

ornate, prize belt buckles.Currys love of tie-down

roping traces back to his firstchildhood experiences of

admiring his father, a competi-tive team tie-down roper. Likemany of these modern daycowboys, the dusty ring of therodeo remains a home awayfrom home, representing theembrace of culture and familyhistory.

    Go Ahead and Jump!

For Margot Fischer, it all startedwith a little Quarter Horse marenamed Susie that a cousin gaveto her when she was about 8. Hermother, Mary Lib Fischer, taughther how to ride, but back then sherode western style. I grew up withit, she remembered. When I out-grew Susie, we gave her to anothercousin and I got another horse. It

wasnt until she started taking lessons at Tyrrell Park Stables that she madehe switch to hunt seat riding.

After graduating with a degree in animal science from Texas A&M, sheecided to open her own barn and become a professional hunter-jumper

rainer. Her Tailgate Stables opened in 1980 in Beaumont but eventuallymoved to Rose City, where it remained for more than 25 years. She built anew facility on 90 acres in Beaumont and moved there in February. She of-ers lessons, training and boarding and takes her riders to horse shows too.

Hunter-jumpers dont have to be a specic breed, but they are primarilyThoroughbreds, Warmbloods or crosses of the two. Taking horses over jumpss thrilling, she contends, And its really good exercise.

Running a stable and being a professional horse trainer is physicallyemanding, but Fischer intends to keep at it as long as she can. I like beingutside, she explained. I like being around the animals. Im 55 now theay I cant lift a hay bale is the day Im going to have to quit!

McCurry, whose father was C.W. Conn Jr. of Conns Inc., starteriding at 5 at her grandfathers farm on a Shetland pony namedBrown Eyes. In middle school, she took hunt seat lessons at TyrrePark Stables. Although her family had a ranch in West Texas, her

parents didnt keep a horse for her in Beamont and she eventually stopped riding. she never stopped dreaming of horses.

Terra Bella Stables is her dream come

true. Opening its barn doors for businessFebruary 2009, the equine facility is situated on 38 acres adjacent to her house buby Compass Pointe Homes in the DiamonD Ranch community. McCurry and her stoer western and English hunt seat rid-ing lessons in a covered arena, training anboarding. Riding camps are held in the sumer and childrens birthday parties can bbooked throughout the year.

Shes always wanted plenty of pets andnow that she has the land for it, shes gotto to a good start. Her current personal mnagerie includes ve horses, two micro-mpigs and several barn dogs and cats. Shes

thinking about getting some sheep with tidea of starting a petting zoo for the birthparties.

Thats why I do what I do, Morrill reminisced. I did it with Mr.Blue.

Although he started riding on Quarter Horses and Paints, hismom, Dianne Morrill, bought an Arabian, which spurred the younghorsemans interest in that breed. He worked for an Arabian trainern his hometown of Baton Rouge while attending high school and

Louisiana State University. In his third year of pre-med, he decidedhe didnt want to be a doctor. He wanted to be a horse trainer. Hequit school and became a full-time assistant at the training barn hedworked at since high school.

In 2002, he moved here to marryBeaumont native Angie Arringtonwhom hed met on the show circuit and

stablished Chris Morrill Training Cen-er, which caters to Arabian and Half-

Arabian show horses. Morrill special-zes in English saddle seat riding butlso trains hunter pleasure mounts inhe covered and outdoor arenas on the

40-acre farm. He takes his clients andheir horses to regional and nationalompetitions and brings back plenty oflue ribbons.

Of the Arabian breed Morrill said,Theyre sensitive and intelligentnimals that can be molded into agilethletes, and thats in addition to theirxtreme beauty. And why saddle seat?

Favorite make of boots?Lucchese. My favorite pair is alligator.

    Favorite brand of jeans?Wrangler.

Your dad was a rodeo guy did you tryrodeo?I always liked team sports better. I liked

football. One of my childhood friends was TuffHedeman (a multi-world champion bull rider).Id go with him to the shows, but I didnt careto do it. Id say, Ill just leave that to you.

Musical inuences? My grandmother on my moms side. Shegrew up in the Depression era in southernOklahoma. She had a singing group withher siblings and sang live on the radio. Shenoticed that ability in me and tried to cultivateit. She played all kinds of music for me.

What does it feel like when youre per-forming on stage for a live audience?

Its different every night. There are nightswhen its perfect and you play every note theright way, sing every note the right way, andthe crowd is into what youre doing and thenthere is no better feeling. Its a huge blessingto be able to do it night after night.

    Favorite make of guitar?Taylor.

What does it feel like to hear your songon the radio?Weird. I get used to it hearing it on the radioin Beaumont as Im driving to the ofce or

going to lunch. Whats really strange is to beoff in some really different place like Bostonand to turn the radio on and hear your song.Thats still very strange to me.

How do you decide what songs torecord?I probably listened to 3,000 songs to getdown to the 12 songs on Prove Me Right, the most recent CD. We cut 20 songs, butonly used 12. When youre a songwriter, ifyoure intellectually honest, you throw yoursongs into the mix and try to pick what youthink is best. My natural reaction is that if asong doesnt grab me at the rst line, Im

probably not as inclined to like it.

If you could play a jam session on yourfront porch with any artists living ordead, who would you invite?Hard to pass up the chance with Elvis orGeorge Strait, either one. On the other hand,Ive had the chance to do just that with someof my friends like Mark Chesnutt and TracyByrd. To me, Mark is one of the greatestsingers in the business. Playing guitars withMark is like playing with a human jukebox you can call out any song and he can play it.Some of the most amazing nights have been

just sitting around playing guitar with him. Imtaken aback by his talent.

Who are the members of your band?Keith Watkins is the last original member ofour rst band. Hes our band leader and moreimportantly, a kind of our spiritual advisor forour group. Laine Thibodeaux has played steelguitar with me for years. Also part of the team

are Jason Burk, Robert Herridge, Bret Nunez,Mike Calley, Jeff Smith, Cory Chenoweth,Lupe Alvarez, Christy Cornelius and DannyPearcy.

What are you reading these days?A two-volume series by Tom Lea about theKing Ranch. I wanted to re-read it. I lived itin the modern day, but its history goes backto the 1850s and is an amazing part of thehistory of this state.

Life heroes? My mom and dad are on the top of my list forheroes in my life. Roger Staubach was my

football hero. George Strait is a musical hero. When it comes to the practice of law, Ive hadthe chance to work with some of the best Walter Umphery, Joe Jamail, Wayne Reaud.Whether they know it or not, theyve had aninuence on me. Mark Chesnutt and TracyByrd, both musically and as friends.

Simple pleasures? Its nice to sit at home and watch SaturdayNight Live on occasion. But the best is thetime I get to spend with my daughter, Kay,who is 3 years old. Shes the most amazingthing Ive ever known in my life.
