Tech returns home for four of next six ACC series: Tech opened the season with 18-of-22 games on the road but, starting with Tuesday's game versus Liberty, began a five-game home stand which is part of a string of 18 home games of its next 29 which also includes four of their next six ACC series being contested at English Field at Union Park. The stretch starts Thursday against No. 6 NC State. Hokies versus the Wolfpack (see more Page 5): Entering the weekend, Tech and NC State have faced off a total of 66 times with the Wolfpack holding a 43-21-2 edge in the all-time series. However, just 26 of those games have been played in Blacksburg, where the Hokies have a slight lead at 13-12-1, but they are just 4-8 in contests at English Field at Union Park. The series started back in 1907, but has ramped up since Tech joined the ACC. The two teams have played 27 times as ACC foes with the Wolfpack winners in 20 of those. The Wolfpack come in with a three-game winning streak and despite Tech never winning a series against NC State, the Hokies have won at least one game in seven of the nine series. Coach Szefc against NC State: As the head coach at Maryland, current Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc has faced the Wolfpack a total of seven times - twice in three-game ACC weekend series and once last year - and owns a 5-2 mark against them. In 2013, his Maryland team lost the ACC series in Raleigh, North Carolina, ironically, March 29-31, two games to one. The teams split the first two games both with final scores of 3-2 before NC State won the rubber match, 9-4. However, the following season in College Park, Maryland, the Terps swept the then No. 11 Wolfpack in a three-game series March 21-23, 2014 by scores of 10-0, 7-4 and 5-2. On March 4, 2017 at the USA Baseball-Irish Classic in Cary, N.C., Maryland beat the then No. 6 Wolfpack, 9-2. Winning on the road: Just three weeks into the ACC schedule, the Hokies have already won two games on the road in the conference - one at Georgia Tech (March 17) and the other at Boston College (March 24). The two victories are already more than last year's win total - the team went 1-14 - and matches the win total for 2016 (2-13). Since 2013, when the team tied the program's best mark with an 8-7 road league record, Tech had won at most four games - in 2015 - the last time they made the ACC Tournament. Speaking of 2015: During the 2015 season, the Hokies posted an 11-9 record during the month of March, which marks the last time the team posted a winning record in any month of more than 10 games played. The most wins since then in a single month (with at least 10 games played) was seven during March 2017 when Tech went 7-12, a win mark the Hokies have already matched. VIRGINIA TECH GAME NOTES - WEEKEND NO. 7

Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced the hiring of Tech’s 25th head baseball coach on June 9 and formally introduced John Szefc as the head coach of the baseball program on June 15.

Szefc (pronounced SHEFF) accepted the position after leading Maryland to three NCAA appearances and a 180-122 (.596) overall record as the Terrapins’ head coach. Prior to his arrival, he owned a 392-259-3 (.602) career record in 12 seasons as an NCAA head coach, producing 10 campaigns with 30 or more wins.

In addition to ending a 43-year NCAA tournament drought and becoming the fastest coach to 100 career wins at Maryland, Szefc spent seven seasons (1996-2002) at the helm of the Marist College baseball program, where he led the team to four conference cham-pionships, four NCAA Regional appearances and a 212-137-3 (.607) overall mark. Szefc earned Northeastern Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1997 and was the American Baseball Coaches Associate Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2001.

The first coach in Maryland history to ever take the Terrapins to an NCAA Super Regional, Szefc accom-plished the feat twice in 2014 and 2015 as he guided the program to the first two 40-win seasons in school history and claimed Maryland’s first two NCAA Regional crowns. Maryland achieved a final No. 14 ranking both seasons, the highest finishes in school history.

He guided the Terrapins to the ACC Tournament final for the first time in 38 years in 2014 and then took Maryland to the Big Ten tournament final in the school’s initial season in that conference, winning a program-best 42 games in 2015.

Szefc has coached 97 players that have been drafted or signed professional contracts since 1997, including six selected in the 2017 MLB draft. Over the last five drafts, 25 of his players have been selected, including the 45th pick of the 2014 draft Jake Stinnett, the highest pick of a Maryland player in almost a decade. He has also helped develop 23 All-Americans, including 10 of the 20 players in Maryland history to earn that distinction.

The Middletown, N.Y. native arrived at Maryland after a two-year stint as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State (2011-12) and a two-season stay as assistant head coach and recruiting coordina-tor at Kansas (2009-10). He also enjoyed a six-season tenure as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette (2003-08). Szefc began his coaching career as an assistant at Sacred Heart (1995) and at Drexel (1990-93).

Szefc managed the New York Generals in the Atlantic College Baseball League during the summers of 1995 and 1996. He led the club to a 47-28 record, earned two consecutive division titles and the ACBL title game in 1996.

Collegiately, he played two years at Connecticut before transferring in 1987 to Drexel. During his senior campaign for the Dragons, he was tabbed an All-East Coast Conference outfielder.

He graduated from Drexel University with a degree in corporate communications in 1989. He also holds a master's degree in sports administration from Temple University.

Szefc and his wife, Barbara, have a daughter, Anna, and two sons, John Michael and Sam.

WHAT IS A HOKIE? Probably the most frequently asked question regarding Virginia Tech athletics and the answer dates back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With it came a contest held by the student body for writing a new cheer and senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Old Hokie” yell. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull said the words had no hidden or symbolic meaning, but had been thought up in an effort to get attention. “Hokie” soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. Below is the “Old Hokie” yell:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki Hy!Tech! Tech! V.P.I.!

Sola-Rex Sola-RahPolytech-Vir-gin-i-a!!

Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

JUST VIRGINIA TECH, PLEASE! While the full name of the school is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the school is commonly referred to as “Virginia Tech.” Founded in 1872, as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, the university changed its named to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1896. Fans of the athletic department, as well as media covering the Hokies, shortened the name to VPI, but it eventually became Virginia Tech. The “State University” was added in 1970 to bring the official title to what it is today. Those covering Hokie athletics are asked to refer to the university as simply “Virginia Tech.” Virginia Tech University, VPI and SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are not recognized names and should not be used.

English Field at Union Park On March 21, 2016, Virginia Tech renamed its baseball

stadium to English Field at Union Park in recognition of a generous commitment of support to the athletics department from Union Bank & Trust. The stadium received substantial upgrading with help from the $3.5 million committed by the Richmond-based bank. On the date, Virginia Tech's Board of Visitors approved extending naming rights to the stadium to Union Bank for 10 years in recognition of the company's financial support.

Located at the intersection of Southgate Drive and Duck Pond Drive, English Field at Union Park is an incredible new home for Virginia Tech baseball. Designed by Cannon Design and built by Whiting-Turner, the $20 million renovation project added a new grandstand area – with new press-level premium suites – 1,132 permanent chair-back seats in concrete stands and a club level above the first-base dugout, along with a social picnic area down the right-field line. The terracing along the third-base line remains.

English Field was officially dedicated during a special ceremony on April 8, 1989 and is named for the late E.R. ‘Red’ English and his wife, Ruth, who provided financial support for its initial construction.

English, a native of Altavista, Va., played as an offensive and defensive guard on Tech’s football team from 1930-33 and graduated in 1934. He contributed to Tech athletics for more than 50 years and was one of the founders of The Student Aid Association in 1949. He served as president of that organization two of its first three years. English received the most outstanding alumni award at Tech in 1984.

Through a generous gift from alumnus George Sampson, the home team dugout was named for long-time Tech baseball coach G.F. ‘Red’ Laird during a ceremony on April 12, 1991. Laird recruited and coached Sampson at Tech.

The team’s year-by-year overall mark in its 30 seasons at English Field at Union Park can be seen on the right. Before it, the Hokies played their home baseball games at Tech Park, where it compiled a 431-122-1 (.779 winning percentage) record over 34 seasons. All-time, Tech is 1,252-561-12 (.689) in games played in Blacksburg.First Date Result Opponent Game: March 22, 1989 W, 7-2 George MasonNight Game: April 28, 2004 W, 8-0 VMI ACC Game: March 11, 2005 L, 17-3 North CarolinaNCAA Reg. Playing against ranked opponents: The chart on the left shows how the Hokies have fared against any ranked opponent in their history as a member of the ACC. Currently, there are four ACC teams on Tech's 2018 schedule who are currently ranked in one of the five major polls. Tech has already played two games against a ranked non-conference foe, dropping a two-run decision to South Alabama, who was ranked as high as 17 in the Collegiate Baseball poll when the Hokies faced them. That same poll had Tech's March 2nd opponent Stetson at No. 12, a game the Hokies lost in a pitcher's duel to the Hatters, 2-1.

Taking over the Tech program: Virginia Tech has had 25 head coaches in its 125-season program history - but just seven since 1945 - below is how the previous six (along with newest head coach John Szefc) fared in their first season. Head Coach First Win Games In Opponent (score) Overall John Szefc Feb. 18, 2018 3 vs. Oklahoma (14-6) 10-13 Patrick Mason Feb. 15, 2014 2 vs. Delaware (8-1) 21-31-1 Pete Hughes Feb. 16, 2007 2 vs. Old Dominion (10-3) 23-31 Chuck Hartman Mar. 10, 1979 1 vs. George Washington (10-8) 28-14 Bob Humphreys Mar. 19, 1974 3 at North Carolina (9-0) 15-15 G.F. Szefc at English Field at Union Park: All-time, Coach Szefc is 4-4 at this field, as he won his first game here on April 12, 2014 with Maryland (a 4-2 decision). However, the Hokies won that ACC series two games to one (April 11-13). This season, he's posted a 3-2 mark with Tech.

The boys were back in town: After starting the season with three straight weekends on the road, the Virginia Tech baseball program was back home the March 9-10 weekend hosting an ACC series. The Hokies welcomed Pittsburgh to English Field at Union Park for the ACC season opener for both teams after they had played 12 of their first 13 on the road - a midweek walk-off win over Radford on Feb. 27 was the only home game. Since joining the ACC, Tech's road swing to start the season was the third longest for a team behind the 2015 squad that played its first 11 contests on the road, the longest stretch to open a season, and 15 of 16 to start the year.

The boys are back in town: (again): Scheduling and Mother Nature had seen the Hokies start the season playing 18 of their first 22 games away from Blacksburg, which included traveling to five different states. However, Tuesday's game against Liberty started a five-game home stand and, when the Hokies head to Lynchburg to face the Flames again on May 2, a span of 23 scheduled games with 14 at home and just four outside the state of Virginia. Of note, the 2005 team played 21 of its first 22 games away from Blacksburg.

The Hokies in ACC Openers: In its history in the ACC (14 seasons), Tech is now 6-8 in its ACC season-opening game, which includes a 2-2 mark at English Field at Union Park after beating Pittsburgh, 4-1, in its 2018 opener March 9. The lone home ACC opening win before this season was over No. 5 Miami, 14-3, back on March 11, 2016. During an ACC season-opening weekend, overall the Hokies are now 13-29, but are 6-6 in such weekends when they open at home.

Speaking of ACC Home Opening weekends: The March 9-10 weekend marked just the fourth time in Tech’s ACC history that its ACC season-opening weekend was played at home. In the previous three, the Hokies won a series, 2-1, against Maryland (2010) and lost a series, 2-1, to both No. 14 Georgia Tech (2013) and No. 5 Miami (2016). They added a 2-1 series win over the Panthers this year, to improve to 2-2 in ACC series opened at home, but are just 1-9 in ACC series opened on the road - winning at Georgia Tech (2-1) in 2007.

Hokies start 2-0 in ACC for first time ever: In 14 seasons in the league, Tech is now 6-8 in ACC openers, including winners in three of its last four, as the team picked up that 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh, March 9. For the first time in six tries, the Hokies then won their second game as well, with a 3-1 victory over the Panthers on Saturday, giving the program its first ever 2-0 start in ACC play.

Tech playing ACC Doubleheaders: In its history in the ACC, Tech has played 24 doubleheaders and overall has won two, lost eight and has split 14. Of the 24 doubleheaders, it's split right down the middle with 12 of them being played on the road and 12 at English Field at Union Park. This season, they've played one at home (vs. Pittsburgh) and one on the road (at Boston College) splitting both. On the road, the Hokies are 0-5-7 in those games, while they are 2-3-7 in ACC doubleheaders played at English Field at Union Park. Tech played seven doubleheaders last season, including five in the ACC. They split the two ACC DHs played at home against Georgia Tech (April 21) and No. 3 North Carolina (May 13). Tech lost two - at Pittsburgh (March 25) and at Miami (May 19) - and split their other DH on the road last season at Duke (March 11).

Hokies playing Free Baseball: Just eight games into the 2018 season, Tech had already played two extra-inning games, going 1-1. The 12-inning affair versus Radford (Feb. 27) was the longest in terms of innings for a Tech game since a 4-3 win over Clemson on March 22, 2015. They are up to three (1-2) with their last game, Tuesday night, dropping a 4-3 game in 10 innings to Liberty. Last year, the Hokies went 1-5 in six free baseball games, while going 2-0 in 2016, 2-2 in 2015 and 3-3-1 during the 2014 campaign. The last time Tech played two extra-inning games before the month of March was in 2015 - Feb. 23 vs. Rider (L, 4-3, 12) and Feb. 28 vs. Toledo (W, 1-0, 10).

Tech walks it off: In his first home game as Tech head coach, eighth overall, John Szefc saw his team win in walk-off fashion in extra innings against Radford, 3-2 in 12 frames (Feb. 27). In the last 10 seasons, the Hokies have had 27 walk-off wins - with the most occurring during the 2012 season, when they had seven, while last year they had just one. The earliest walk-off in that span (by date) was Feb. 25, 2012 - Chad Morgan sac fly in the bottom of the ninth gave Tech a 4-3 win over Iowa in Conway, South Carolina. That game was also the eighth of the season. Below are the last 10 walk-offs.

VIRGINIA TECH GAME NOTES - WEEKEND NO. 7

Enright and Scherzer make returns: Two Virginia Tech pitchers have made successful returns to the mound this year after coming off Tommy John surgeries. Nic Enright was the Hokies' opening day starter on Feb. 16 at Coastal Carolina and has pitched in nine games this season with three starts. The last time Enright appeared on the mound for Tech (before this season) was May 1, 2016. Slowly making his return from his second TJ surgery in back-to-back years, Luke Scherzer made a one-inning start against Central Michigan on March 7. The last time he pitched in a Tech game (before this year) was May 19, 2015.

Coward strikes out a dozen: Connor Coward tied a school record for most strikeouts in an ACC regular-season game when he struck out 12 Pittsburgh Panthers over seven innings in a 4-1 victory (March 9). The last, and only other pitcher, to have 12 strikeouts in an ACC regular-season game was Marc Zecchino, who did it on April 10, 2011 at Wake Forest in seven innings as well. It was the most punch outs in a regular-season game since 2005 - Ryan Kennedy, vs. Navy, 15 in seven innings, Feb. 20, 2015. Of note, on May 27, 2010, Justin Wright struck out 15 Georgia Tech batters in an ACC Baseball tournament game, a nine-inning effort.

Coward strikes out 11 or more again: Only seven pitchers in Tech's ACC history (since 2005) have struck out at least 10 batters twice in a single season, and only two - Coward and Zecchino - struck out 11 or more at least two times. Zecchino did it three times, marking the only Hokies' pitcher with three or more 10-strikeout games in a single season, while Coward notched his 11-K performance on Feb. 23 versus Iowa in New Orleans. Of note, again, Wright had three career 10-plus strikeout games, one in 2009 and two in 2010, including that 15-K performance.

Seymour picks up wins: On Feb. 24 versus Ball State in New Orleans, Ian Seymour won his first game for the Hokies. March 10 against Pittsburgh, Seymour picked up his second win of the year joining two very short lists. First, he became just the sixth Hokie to win multiple games as a true freshman pitcher, the last to do it was Joe Mantiply in 2010. He won three, which ties Mathew Price for the most for a pitcher during an ACC season. Speaking of the ACC, he became the fourth Hokie freshman to win a conference start and first since Packy Naughton (April 26, 2015). Price and Wright each won two ACC starts.

Seymour also strikes out 10: A total of 16 Hokies have struck out 10-plus batters in a game since 2005 and only 11 have done it in an ACC game. Seymour became the first to do it as a freshman, when he struck out 10 Pittsburgh Panthers March 10. Wright and Price each did it once as sophomores. The last freshman with more than 10 Ks in a game was Pat Pinkman, vs. Liberty, when he struck out 12, March 3, 1998. Pinkman struck out 10 or more three times that season.

McDonald in for the save: Since Matt Dalton set a school record with 14 saves in a single season (2002), only four men have saved more than five games. Tech's Andrew McDonald already has four this season.

BATTERS

Stoffel ties school/ACC record: In the third game of the series against Pittsburgh March 10 (Game 2 of the doubleheader), Tom Stoffel tripled in both the first and fifth innings, tying the Tech school record for triples in a game, now done by 15 Hokies. The last Tech player with two triples in a game was Saige Jenco (May 5, 2015 vs. West Virginia). It also tied the ACC record, which had been done by 73 players prior to Stoffel.

Horanski heating up at the plate: Over the past nine games, Luke Horanski has set a career-long hitting streak of nine games, which also ties the longest on the team this year. He's batting .424 with 14 hits (33 at-bats), including four doubles and two home runs, seven RBI and a 1.252 OPS. He's also added a team-high six walks and has scored six times. Mundy home run note: Last season, Mundy, who leads Tech with four home runs this season, hit five long balls as a freshman to join only Andrew Rash (6, 2010) and Mark Zagunis (5, 2012) as the only freshmen to launch at least five during their rookie campaign. Zagunis hit four of those home runs in ACC regular-season games, while Mundy and Rash each hit three.

Owens homers start the game: Jack Owens opened the series at Georgia Tech by hitting a solo home run to center field, the sixth home run of his career. With that round tripper, he became just the third Hokie to hit a game-opening home run on the road in an ACC game (see below, italics). Only seven Hokies have ever hit a leadoff home run in the first inning (on the road or at home, first Tech at-bat in a game as a member of the ACC). Below is a list of those men. Saige Jenco is the only player to do it twice, on the road, while Owens joins him as the only players with two Tech first at-bat home runs. Player Opponent Date 1. More than a dozen see their first action at Tech: The Hokies, who have 18 newcomers on their roster, saw 16 of them make their Tech debuts in the team's opening weekend at the Coastal Carolina tournament which including four - junior transfers Luke Horanski, Nick Owens and Nick Menken and freshman Darion Jacoby - starting each of them. For Jacoby (LF), he became the Hokies’ first true freshman to start a season opener in the field since Ricky Surum (SS) – Feb. 14, 2014 at The Citadel. He was the first freshman to start the first eight games of his Tech career since Alex Perez, who never missed a start during his collegiate career (2012-15).

Four freshmen in the starting lineup: At the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Florida, the Hokies' lineup card on March 3 versus Purdue featured four true freshmen - Cam Irvine in right field, Darion Jacoby in left field, Michael Fernandez as the DH and Ian Seymour on the mound. The last time a Tech lineup card had four true freshmen on it was in on April 12, 2014 against Maryland - yes, Maryland, who was led by then second-year head coach John Szefc. Getting starts that day were Tom Stoffel (RF), Ricky Surum (SS), Miguel Ceballos (3B) and Aaron McGarity on the mound. Add in redshirt-freshman Saige Jenco and five first-year players made a start that day. Last weekend at Boston College (Game 2), Irvine (DH), Jacoby (LF) and Seymour (SP) were joined by Jojo Odachowski (SS), marking the second time this season four true freshmen were in the Hokies' starting lineup.

Two Hokies earn preseason All-America honors: Senior Sam Fragale, who was a Second Team All-ACC first baseman last season, moved over to third base for the upcoming season and was twice named a preseason All-American at the spot. He earned third team honors from both the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball. Senior Tom Stoffel, who was also a Second Team All-ACC selection in the outfield last season, was also selected by Collegiate Baseball as a preseason All-American on the third team, as a utility player.

Horanski named to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award Watch List: The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced the official watch list for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com on March 6 and Tech's Luke Horanski was one of ninety-seven catchers nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until April 30, 2018.
