PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

During the month of November, we will be celebrating the virtue of Peace at St.

Anselm. In John‘s Gospel, Jesus reminds us, ―Peace I leave to you, my peace I give

to you‖. Each time that we gather together as a community of believers, we extend

our peace toward one another. Throughout the Month of November, we will be ac-

knowledging students who demonstrate acts of peace around the school. Some of

the ways students may display this include: instilling peace in others, staying level-

headed under pressure, generously forgiving others and promoting and practicing

conflict resolution.

As you will notice in November‘s Curriculum Highlights, the teachers at St.

Anselm have a number of meaningful activities planned for students to help them

gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by our Canadian soldiers. In

addition to the important activities planned throughout November, we have a num-

ber of special events prepared to commemorate Remembrance Day. On November

8th at 9:00 am, Mrs. Angelone‘s class will be leading our Remembrance Day Mass,

dedicated to all of those who have sacrificed their lives. In the afternoon of Novem-

ber 8th, Mr. Chittick and Mr. Pedra‘s classes will be participating in a war memorial

service at Leaside Arena to commemorate the 17 soldiers to whom the arena was

originally dedicated. We also have a very special assembly planned for students on

November 11th at 10:40 in the gymnasium. Mr. John Williams, who was involved

in the Canadian Armoured Core, served as a fighter pilot and was an army artillery

commander will be sharing his story of sacrifice and will be joining us in our mo-

ment of silence. On Remembrance Day. All are welcome to these events planned at

the school!

November also marks the time when parents will receive a Progress Report from

their child‘s teacher. The intent of the Fall Progress Report is to facilitate better

communication among parents, teachers, and students about student progress to

date. The recommendations made in the report encourages students to set goals,

assists parents in supporting learning at home and helps teachers establish plans for

teaching. As you will notice, the Progress Report Card places a strong emphasis on

the development of students' learning skills and work habits. We look forward to

further discussing your child‘s progress on November 14th and 15h for parent-

teacher interviews.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very peaceful month!

Sincerely,

Richard Walo

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND WELL-BEING PROGRESS REPORTS

The Fall Progress Report Card will be distributed to stu-

dents on Tuesday, November 12th. Please sign and re-

turn the Report Card envelope provided to indicate that

you have seen your child’s Progress Report Card.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Interview forms have been sent home with students who

are either the Youngest or Only in their families. Teach-

ers will coordinate with their colleagues to accommodate

the requests from each family. If an emergency arises and

you are unable to keep your interview, please call the

school and inform Mrs. Bright. Please be advised that

this is the only date for scheduled interviews. However,

you are always more than welcome to contact your

child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress.

CROSS COUNTRY

A special congratulations to all of our Cross

Country Runners who recently competed at

the Divisional, Regional and City meets. We

had an incredible number of runners advance on to the

City finals, 15 in total! Thank you to the incredible group

of volunteers (both staff and parents) for assisting

throughout training and at The Beach and Earl Bales Park.

It was amazing to see so many attend the Divisional Meet

to cheer on our students!

BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK

During the week of November 18-21,

schools in Ontario will be participating in

Bullying Awareness initiatives. On Mon-

day, November 18th, students in Grades 6-8

will be participating in an Internet Safety

presentation by the highly acclaimed Steve

Chapelle. The presentation will focus on three themes:

careless social media use can endanger a child, all mes-

sages and posts can be traced to their source and every-

thing you send remains on the computers of strangers for-

ever.

A follow up Information Session for parents will be pro-

vided in the evening of November 18th at 6:30 in the

gymnasium. We strongly encourage all parents to attend

this FREE workshop. We thank CSAC for funding this

very practical and important evening! On Wednesday,

November 20th, The Safe Schools Team at St. Anselm,

consisting of 1 parent, 1 teacher, 2 students and the Princi-

pal will attend the Safe Schools Symposium at Monte-

cassino Banquet Hall. This full day symposium is de-

signed to raise awareness about the problem of bullying,

and the need for inclusiveness in schools. Strategies deliv-

ered will assist our team in developing our Bullying

Awareness, Prevention and Intervention Plan.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCE-

DURES The Toronto Catholic District School

Board has a primary responsibility to en-

sure the safety of students and staff inside

Board buildings and on Board property. Every school in

the Board has been provided with a procedural guide that

provides direct support to school administrators to prevent

a threat to school safety.

Shelter in Place, Hold and Secure and Lockdown repre-

sent the responses that should be initiated by the Principal

in cases of threats to school safety. An explanation of

each is provided:

1) Shelter in Place - Possible Environmental Danger in

the School Neighborhood. This response is generally ini-

tiated by the Toronto Police Service or their agencies, in-

cluding Toronto Fire Services, having jurisdiction over the

incident. The threat poses no immediate danger to stu-

dents or staff unless they leave the building.

2) Hold and Secure - Possible Danger in the School

Neighborhood. This response is initiated when the threat

is proximate to, but not close to the building. The threat

poses no immediate danger to students or staff as they

leave the building. In such situations, staff remain on high

alert.

3) Lockdown - Danger on School Site. This response is

initiated when imminent danger is present on the school

ground and the safety of students and staff is threatened.

Should a real threat to school safety procedure be initiated,

the school will inform parents of the event that led to the

particular response by letter or phone.

We regularly practice our Emergency Response Proce-

dures throughout the year in order to prepare for an actual

emergency.

Please Note: Exit/entry doors are locked from 8:30 - 3:00

p.m. and all visitors must be ‗buzzed‘ in through the front

door by the administrative staff. We thank everyone for

their support in keeping our students safe at all times.

Our most recent lockdown practice was on Fri-

day, November 1st at 1:00 p.m.

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS Mrs. Terrana JK/SK As we enter the month of November, Mrs. Terrana‟s Kindergarten students are very inter-ested in learning all about Remembrance Day. The students will create a “Recipe for Peace” list as a class. The boys and girls will learn how to become “Peacemakers”. In mathematics, we continue with number sense focusing on numbers 1-20 through the use of our daily calen-dar. The Kindergartens will be able to create patterns using shapes, colours and numbers. We will continue to work on letter sounds this month with c, k, e, h and r. The students will brainstorm words for each letter sound. For word building, we will focus on the “in” word family. In Science, the Kin-dergartens will experiment, predict and communicate about the human body while they explore the five senses. In the Arts, we will have a chance to be creative with texture awareness. Finally, in Physical Edu-cation, the boys and girls will be introduced to different ways to travel around the gym with some use of folk dance.

Miss Mazzuca‟s SK Class November will be another eventful month in the Senior Kindergarten classroom! We will Skype with Howard Binkow (the author of the popular Howard B. Wigglebottom series). This will be a wonderful opportunity to generate questions and to read different How-ard B. Wigglebottom books. Speaking of books, we will be visiting Leaside Public Library on Thursday, November 21st! We are very excited about our first library visit of the year.

During the month of November, the focus will be on the theme of peace. We will explore our five senses in relation to peace by reading the picture book, What Does Peace Feel Like? By Vladimir Radunsky. This will tie into religious education, science, and Remembrance Day discussions. We will also have an opportunity to develop our language skills by writing simple sentences about peace. In math, we will continue to create ABC, ABAB, AABB, and ABB patterns using a variety of manipulatives. We will also begin a measurement unit during which we will explore non-standard units of measurement us-ing a number of manipulatives. In addition, we will continue to use the SMARTboard for many fun math activities. In language, we will build words from the "in" word family, practice reading more sight words, write in our journals, and READ, READ, READ! We will select books from our individual book boxes to read independ-ently and with our reading buddies in Ms. McLoughlin's class. We will focus on the e, h, r, and m letter sounds. In November, we will also focus on the reading comprehension strategy of predicting, in addition to retelling. Finally, we are so excited to start Raz-Kids and to celebrate our reading success! Happy learning to all the Senior Kindergarten students!

St. Anselm PAGE 3

Miss Messner‟s Grade 1 Class In November the virtue of the month we will be celebrating is peace making. In Re-ligion we will be learning about relationships and families, also We Hear the Story of God Through Jesus. We will continue to explore the season of fall. In Language Arts the students will continue to participate in the daily 5 activities, shared and interactive reading and writing and our weekly word study. In Math we will be fo-cusing on Data Management, through the use of tally charts, bar graphs, picture graphs, games and various activities. We will also be starting our introduction to Addition and Subtrac-tion. In Social Studies we will continue to explore and learn about our local community. In Science we will be learning about energy in our lives.

Mrs. Whyte‟s Grade 1/2 21st Century Learners The Grade One and Two students have had another eventful month! We showed GRATITUDE to others

by writing thank you letters and emails, and sending gifts (books and letters) to our Skype buddies in Malta, Vancouver Island, and the U.S.A. (California and New Jersey) (Writing). We made virtual trips to Malta, and California, using Google Earth, and we also Skyped with these friends and learned about our international friends‟ communi-ties and traditions (Social Studies). We created two PREZI presentations online with Ms. Messner‟s Grade Ones and the

Multiple Exceptionalities class, called Fall in Toronto, and Our Community-Toronto (Writing/Media/Social Studies). Ranger Mike from Yellowstone National Park Skyped with us on the topic of the plants and ani-mals native to this, the first national park in the U.S.A. We also had a wonderful trip to the Markham Fair where we saw farm and zoo animals up close (Science-Living Things)! We raised money selling treats at the Halloween Dance, for the people of the Philippines who suffered a devastating earthquake this month (Religion). This month, the virtue is PEACE and we will show peace by rewarding each other with “Bucket filler” cards and keeping a “Bucket filling” journal (Religion/Fully Alive/Writing/Oral Language). We will continue to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts (Reading). We are excited about Skyping with author Howard Binkow and hearing about how he created his bunny character Mr. Wigglebottom (Language)! We are enjoying reading and dramatizing his books in advance of his virtual visit. We have booked two scien-tists who will Skype with us this month about the oceans of the world (Science-Air and Water in the Envi-ronment/Daily and Seasonal Changes). In Math, we will study Addition and Subtraction Strategies and Linear Measurement, using the SMARTboard, and math manipulatives in the classroom. We are also look-ing forward to more Skypes with Ms. Beck‟s primary class in New Jersey and sharing math problem solving activities with them (Math)!

Mrs. Dalla Guistina - Physical Education/Health During the last few months the students have done an excellent job at maintaining their personal fitness and physical activity levels. They have worked cooperatively in team-tasks while developing their safety skills and we are now ready for target activities. In November, the primary grades will focus on rolling and throwing towards a target using various strategies for aim and accuracy. The Junior grades will also work on aim and accuracy while combining a variety of sending and movement skills.

St. Anselm PAGE 4

Ms. McMahon‟s Grade 2 Across the curriculum Ms. McMahon‟s class has adopted the phrase: Three is a magic num-ber. When problem-solving in Mathematics, we‟ve learned that the best strategy for a complete answer is to incorporate Numbers, Pictures and Words. In our Data Management unit we‟ve learned to: 1.Conduct the survey. 2. Collect the data. 3. Construct the graph. Though some-times challenging, we‟ve especially enjoyed creating survey questions, totaling tallies and mak-

ing graphs about Halloween: favourite costumes, tricks and especially treats! In Social Studies we‟ll be exploring the levels of community -- from local neighbourhood and city to country and continent -- under God we‟re truly one world. Of course, this month‟s virtue is Peace, which we will ex-plore through reading, writing, poetry and art connected to Remembrance Day. We hope to create our own prayers of peace which we will recite beginning with the most important Three: God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. As Grade Twos, we are looking forward to making our First Communion. On the P.A., we listen to the morning “Gospel according to …” which we now respond with: “Glory to you, O Lord,” mak-ing a small cross with our thumb on our forehead, over our lips and our heart as we contemplate: God be in our minds and thoughts; God be on our lips and in our words; God be in our hearts and within our actions.

Miss McLoughlin‟s Grade 2 Class The month of October and the excitement of Halloween are now in our rear-view mirrors. New opportunities for learning lie ahead in November. The virtue of the month for Novem-ber is Peace. Through Religion, Family Life, Literature, Writing, and Visual Arts activities the students will reflect on the sacrifices made by Canadian Veterans and explore ways that a Grade two student can be a peacemaker. In Mathematics, the students will be studying addition and subtraction strategies and linear measurement. In Social Studies, we are learning that countries around the world have much in common, but also have unique features. Our Science unit, All About Animals is nearing completion and will end with a small project. As the winter chill takes hold, students are reminded to have indoor shoes for the classroom and should dress for the colder weather.

Mrs. Connally‟s Grade 3 Class The spooky fun of Hallowe‟en now over, Mrs. Connally‟s class will begin a unit on peace in November. We will recite poetry, read stories of service and sacrifice as well as create beau-tiful posters to commemorate fallen Canadian heroes. We will learn and write about saints in Religion and explore the theme Living in Relationship in Family Life. In Science, we will grow and observe the life cycle of our bean plants. We will also learn about the responsibility of people to protect plant life. Later on in the month, we will study soil and expect to learn a lot from Ms. Tremain, our Scientist in the School specialist on the subject.

In Math, we will be learning about data management. We will write good survey questions, tally data, draw graphs and interpret results. We will continue to focus on problem solving paying specific attention to un-derstanding the question and determining a plan to solve. Ms. Marotta will be with us full time for two weeks this month. We look forward to all the energy and enthusiasm she brings, we love learning from her.

St. Anselm PAGE 5

Mr. Chittick‟s Grade 3 Class Mr. Chittick‟s class will spend Veteran‟s Week, November 5th to 11th, reading stories and articles in order to learn about the dedication of our Canadian soldiers, past and present, and even about the animals who served their country during WWI and WWII. One of the most exciting parts of this unit of study is the making of a poster dedicated to the mem-ory of our fallen soldiers and writing a postcard to a veteran to say thank you for their contribution to freedom and peace.

In Science, we will continue our study of plants by growing a bean plant and discussing how important it is for people to preserve and protect all plant life. Later on in the month, we will transition into learning about soil. Our Scientist in the School, Ms. Tremain, will visit our class in late November to teach us many things related to this topic. In Mathematics, students will learn about data management and work on problem solving using addition and subtraction. We will continue our work in learning how to understand a question and determine a plan to solve a problem. Sentence and paragraph construction will continue to be a focus in Language and word studies. Onward to Christmas! Mrs. Holden‟s Grade 3/4 Class It‟s hard to believe that we‟re approaching November, but the cool temperatures remind us that winter is not far off! The Grade 3/4 class has a busy schedule for November. After the wonderful shadow puppetry presentation by the Little Red Theatre, the students are excited to be creating their own fairytale shadow pup-pet plays and presenting them to the primary classes. In Reading, we will be Making Connections to texts we have read. Part of that experience will be to read stories related to Peace and Remembrance Day and to reflect on the importance of working to avoid conflict in our lives. This will lend itself to our study of the physical/political regions of Canada studied in grade 4. In Mathematics, the grade 4s will be working on Data Management (this will begin with graphing informa-tion about costumes worn on Hallowe‟en!) With the conclusion of our Cross Country Walking/Running clubs, we will begin D.P.A. (Daily Physical Activity) to supplement our Phys Ed program, so please ensure that your child has his/her running shoes at school every day. Grade 4/5 Ms. Napao's Class Our class is more than half way through "The Breadwinner" written by Canadian writer Deborah Ellis. Did you know that Ellis wrote the novel after spending time helping out in an Afghan refugee camp? The story is based on the real story of a girl Ellis met in this camp, who had cut her hair and donned boy's clothing to support her family. Everyday we read on, the students are at the edge of their seats because the chapters frequently end with a cliff hanger. We look forward to finding out what hap-pens to Parvana and her family.

St. Anselm PAGE 6

Remembrance Day commemorates the sacrifices of people in all armed conflicts. Our class will be doing various activities such as reading and writing newspaper articles, on-line investigations and art pieces based on Remembrance Day. They will even learn how animals have been affected by war. The Grade 4's started Chapter 3: Data Management during the last week of Octo-ber. Chapter 4 Numeration: Addition and Subtraction will start around the second week of November. We started the Social Studies unit on People and Environments: Political and Physical Regions of Canada during the last week of October. In this unit, students will develop their understanding of Canada‟s prov-inces and territories. They will identify and locate the physical regions within the provinces and territories, and they will investigate the characteristics of these regions. Mrs. Angelone‟s Grade 5/6

November is shaping up to be another busy month for our class. Our class will be leading this month‟s school Mass on November 8th. We look forward to participating in this special Remembrance Day Mass. In Math, the grade five students have just completed Chapter One: Patterns in Mathemat-ics and will now be learning about Data Management in Chapter Three. Students will be learning how to create a survey and interpret the results and calculate the mean and iden-tify the mode of a set of data.

In Language, our class is finishing reading the novel “Crash” written by Jerry Spinelli. Students continue to focus on determining the important events and making connections when using a reading response. This novel has led to many meaningful discussions about the devastating effects that bullying can have on people. Mme. Marrelli - French For this month Mme. Marrelli‟s grade 3‟s will be beginning their unit on l‟école. We will be singing and dancing to Gregg LeRock‟s Mon sac à dos while learning school vocabu-lary, articles and sentence starters. As the culminating task, students will design and label their ideal school! M. Morishita-Miki‟s French Class Bonjour! This month, the class of M. Morishita-Miki will be learning about shopping. We will be learning new vocabulary regarding this theme. The students will learn how to purchase various items in French. We will also be learning about qualitative and possessive adjectives. Happy Movember!

St. Anselm PAGE 7

Mrs. Gundy Gr 6/7 Class October was a busy time for the grade 6/7 class and there seems to be no slowing down as we move into the month of November. In Language Arts, the students just finished writing letters on abolishing the use of child labour in factories. We recently began reading “Maniac Magee” as a whole class and this will continue through the month of November. We will work on reading and writing strategies through in-class assignments and homework based on the novel. In Math, the grade 6‟s will continue to work on Chapter 3: Data Management and Prob-ability. We will also be covering Chapter 4: Addition and Subtraction towards the middle and end of the month. In October, the grade 6 students created rovers for their space unit in Science. They were very well done and they showed a lot of thought and attention to detail. Great job 6s. We will be wrapping up the unit on Space in November. I would also like to take the time to congratulate the grade 6/7 class for raising over $1000 for The Terry Fox Foundation through the National School Day Run. Way to go! Mrs. Korczynski - Grade 7

What a ride! It‟s hard to imagine that we are heading into our third month of school; here is your brief 60 second update! In Language Arts, through continued study of song lyrics and poetry, students are going to complete their next major writing assignment, focusing on figures of speech. In Mathematics, we survived the storm of ratio, rate and percentages! Next, we‟ll be sailing towards data management, followed by patterns and relationships. There is going to

be a shift in History: our students are going to take on the role of teachers! They will be conducting their own lessons on the society of New France, focusing on education, government, religion, and economy. We will then turn our attention over to the British. In Science, students will start their next unit on interac-tions within ecosystems; we will be exploring the various levels of life, how organisms interact and how to keep Earth‟s systems going – this unit will coincide nicely with our Eco Club initiatives and goals. Last but not least, the virtue for the month of November is peacekeeping. The importance of being a peacemaker will be stressed in this month‟s health unit when students will examine strategies used to confront bully-ing. Ms. DeNicolais - Special Education The class continues to work on life skills on Fridays. Sometimes it is baking and other times it involves sewing. In addition, there are short walks in the local community. Some of these are done in the company of Flash, the therapy dog. When he and his owner visit the class, the children learn about dog behaviour and usually entertain Flash with a story or other activity. The students just completed their participation in the Special Olympics Cross Country Event at Earl Bales Park. Now they have turned their attention to bowling. They learn to cheer for one another, wait their turn and read numbers from the score board. It is a very positive ex-perience. In Math, the children continue to work on addition and subtraction sentences to twenty. They use number lines and counters to help perform the operations. They are also working on pictographs and the related tally sheet. In Language, they are recalling the sequence of the story, discussing a little about the character and relating where the story occurred. After having watched a shadow theatre presenta-tion, they are busy presenting their own simple shadow stories. The students also write short stories with illustrations to accompany their words. The end of October was highlighted with their participation in Ms. D‟s wedding. They were confident and proud when they took the gifts to the altar during the Mass.

St. Anselm PAGE 8

Mr. Pedra - Grade 8 Greetings St. Anselm C.S. from the grade 8‟s. October was yet again another suc-cessful month for the senior most members of St. A‟s student body. The grade 8‟s were singled out by The Water Brothers who Skyped with our class (along with 8 other classes from schools all across Toronto) and said that „we brought it‟ with re-gards to our energy and the caliber of the questions that we asked about the im-pending Asian carp infiltration in our Great Lakes. The grade 8‟s also set a new school record for most cans brought in per student during the Thanksgiving food drive with 17.6 cans/student. Better luck next time Mrs. Gundy‟s class. In November our focus in math will turn towards data management and the qualities (success criteria) that make certain types of graphs better suited for particular sets of data and specific purposes than others. We will also begin our unit on patterns (algebra) and the students could not be more excited. In language we will be examining fairy tales and folk tales and having some fun with the genre through the creation of our very own fractured versions of some well-known classics. In science we will wrap up our water unit with the creation of Prezi presentations surrounding global water issues. In geography we will continue to examine factors that affect human settlement and solutions to current issues that we are facing and that pose a threat to future development. High school applications are due into the board office as of November 11th and I implore all of my grade 8 students to take time and ownership of their future through their careful consideration of a high school Ms. Lontos ESL/Health - October /November Highlights

In October, all grades continued to learn new routines – warm up, solfege, and rhythm patterns. Primary Students focused on age appropriate new songs (I am The Fastest Tur-key, Turkey Lurkey etc). They accompanied songs, using appropriate rhythm instruments, body percussion or “found” instruments. All grades worked on Thanksgiving and Hallow-een songs and practised songs for the next school Mass. ESL students explored the vir-tue of Gratitude. We focused on Thanksgiving related lessons and activities. They also learned about Halloween and the history behind it. Students used a variety of learning re-sources, including visual materials, simplified texts, and bilingual and picture dictionaries.

They continued to learn new vocabulary in each subject area. In November, we will dedicate our time in Music class to talk and sing about peace. Students will con-tinue to perform rhythms using ta, titi, and rest and read simple rhythmic notation. Listening component will be also a focus for all grade levels at this time. All grades will work on Remembrance Day songs and Mass songs. We will continue to use Smart Boards for many Music activities. ESL students will get in-volved in various quiet activities related to celebrating and emphasising Remembrance Day. They will re-search the meaning behind Remembrance Day and how it relates to the virtue of the month which is “Peace”. After reading the poem “In Flanders Fields”, older students will analyze the lyrics to this song and write their own Remembrance Day poem.

edged in September and October!

DRESS DOWN FOR CHARITY Due to the recent devastation in the

Philippines, we decided to have funds

raised through October‘s Dress Down

Day to go to the families in the Philip-

pines who have suffered significantly

because of this natural disaster. With

your financial assistance, we were able to raise $500.00.

Our efforts were coordinated with the Archdiocese of

Toronto and a cheque has been submitted on behalf of

the families of St. Anselm. Thank you for your generos-

ity! In November, we will send proceeds from our Dress

Down Day to our Foster Children.

COLD WEATHER As we encounter the cooler temperatures in November,

please ensure that your child comes to school with the

appropriate fall/winter clothing.

FOREST OF READING BOOK CLUB Students in Grades 3-8 will be invited to par-

ticipate in the ‗piloting‘ of the Silver Birch

Reading Club at St. Anselm‘s. Interested stu-

dents will meet once a week in the library and

will engage in ‗Literature Circles‘ and discuss the book they

are currently reading. There are 10 different Fictional books

that members of the Book Club will be required to read by

the Spring.

Students in the Book Club will have the opportunity to vote

for their favorite book during the last week of April. The

winning author/story is determined solely by the voting of

students across Ontario. On May 15, students from the

Book Club will be able to meet the winning author at The

Harbourfront Centre. For more information on the Forest of

Reading Program, please visit: www.accessola.com/reading

A very special thank you to CSAC for funding this very

worthwhile program at our school!

OTHER NEWS FROM THE TCDSB...

Special Education and Community Resources Fair

A resource fair for parents of children with special needs

will be held at the Catholic Education Center on Saturday,

November 2, 2013 from 9:00 am - 1:00 p.m.

Introducing the Anchor of Hope TCDSB is pleased to introduce a new project specifically

designed to celebrate our Year of Hope, the second year of

the Board‘s Pastoral Plan. Last year we saw the completion

of the two-year journey of our Witness to Faith Cross. What

an incredible journey it was for all of us—what a beautiful

testament to our shared Faith. This year, TCDSB invites all

schools to participate in the ―Anchor of Hope‖, a tangible

way for us to share ideas about what hope looks like in our

local schools and offices.

The physical anchor will be designed and built by students

from our Catholic schools, and will be given a place of hon-

our in the atrium at the Catholic Education Centre. The an-

chor will showcase the many ideas, messages and visual

representations of hope throughout our school system. The

Board looks forward to seeing the local interpretations of

what hope looks like, and how many of these ideas will

come to fruition next year as our Year of Hope transitions

into our Year of Charity, which will invite us to put our

Faith and Hope into action.

SCHOOL LEARNING IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The primary focus of School Improvement during the 2013-

2014 school year, will be on improving our results in Mathe-

matics. Our goal is to have at least 75% of our students

achieve a Level 3 or 4 (A or B) in Mathematics by the end

of the school year. We thank you for all your support in

achieving this goal

Another area that we have identified as a goal for our school

is enhancing Student Leadership. We have investigated

various programs that can be used school-wide to further

develop leadership skills in our students More information

will be forthcoming...

IN FLANDERS FIELD - John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
